Thank you for supporting El Pueblo in 2015. In El
Pueblo’s 20th anniversary year, we celebrated the organization’s accomplishments, reconnected with past
supporters, and continued building for the future. At
the same time, we struggled alongside grassroots
community members who are organizing in the face
of tremendous challenges, including anti-immigrant
and anti-reproductive rights legislation, an increasingly polarized and toxic political debate, and a devastating Christmas-time announcement of new government efforts to deport women and children who
have sought refuge in North Carolina and around the
country.

In 2016, we will engage in a comprehensive strategic
planning process to chart the organization’s path for
the next few years; expand our innovative leadership
workshops designed for and by Latinxs; and support
grassroots community members to participate in
the election process and continue their advocacy for
more just policies on the local and state level. You will
also notice that we have adopted the gender neutral
term “Latinx” in our communications to reflect our
vision of building justice and equity for community
members of all genders. We hope to create an even
broader, more diverse, and stronger movement for
social justice in 2016 and look forward to your building this movement with us.

En el año 2016, vamos a participar en un proceso integral
de planificación estratégica para trazar la ruta de la organización en los próximos años; para ampliar nuestros innovadores talleres de liderazgo diseñados por y para latinxs;
y para apoyar a miembrxs de la comunidad de base para

Youth peer educators hosted outreach workshops
for other youth and parents on sexual and reproductive health, improving communication within the
family, and healthy decision-making. More than 70
teenagers and parents participated in these interactive, youth-led workshops. In addition, more than 60
community members learned about policy changes,
such as legislation that would impact immigrants’ access to drivers’ licenses and identity documents. Out
of these forums, community members identified next
steps that they wanted to take to impact legislation,
such as direct lobbying, collecting petitions, and organizing rallies.
Promotores juveniles latinxs organizaron talleres para otrxs jóvenes y para padres y madres sobre la salud sexual y
reproductiva, y cómo mejorar la comunicación dentro de la
familia y la toma de decisiones saludables. Más de 70 jóvenes y padres y madres participaron en estos talleres interactivos, dirigidos por jóvenes. Además de eso, se compartió
información relevante con más de 60 miembros de la comunidad acerca de cambios en las políticas, tales como la legislación que afectaría el acceso de inmigrantes a las licencias
de conducir y a documentos de identidad. Como resultado

La Fiesta del Pueblo
Through La Fiesta del Pueblo 2015, more than 18,000
people celebrated the diversity of Latin American culture, got informed through educational booths, and
took action in their communities. More than 70 musicians, dancers, visual artists, vendors, and cultural
associations represented diverse cultural expressions
from Central America, South America, Mexico, and
the Caribbean. Thousands of children and youth participated in the educational and artistic activities in
Niñolandia and the Youth Fair. More than 50 other
non-profit organizations and state agencies shared
information, services and provided preventative
health screenings. Dozens of community members
registered to vote for the first time and signed up
to become part of El Pueblo’s on-going leadership
development programming. El Pueblo leaders hosted
16 public officials who also participated. Mark your

Más de 18.000 personas celebraron la diversidad de la cultura latinoamericana, mediante La Fiesta del Pueblo 2015;
obtuvieron información a través de puestos educativos y
tomaron acción en sus comunidades. Más de 70 músicos,
bailarines, artistas visuales, vendedores y asociaciones culturales representaron las diversas expresiones culturales
procedentes de América Central, América del Sur, México
y el Caribe. Miles de niñxs y jóvenes participaron en las actividades educativas y artísticas en Niñolandia y la Feria
Juvenil. Más de 50 otras organizaciones sin fines de lucro
y agencias estatales compartieron información, servicios y
exámenes preventivos de salud. Decenas de miembrxs de

Youth Council - A dozen youth participated in El
Pueblo’s Youth Council to help design and facilitate
the Pueblo Power Youth Leadership Program; partner
with adult staff to strengthen youth-led organizing
and integrate youth into daily operations; and facilitate intergenerational activities. Two Youth Council
members also joined the board of directors, increasing youth involvement in El Pueblo’s governance.

el Consejo Juvenil de El Pueblo para ayudar a diseñar y facilitar el programa Poder del Pueblo; trabajar con personal
adulto para fortalecer la organización dirigida por jóvenes

Pueblo Power Youth Leadership Program - Twenty-seven young people have gained leadership skills
and knowledge about social justice, youth organizing, and media literacy through Pueblo Power. They
shared what they have learned and used their new
skills to reach out to other youth through La Fiesta
del Pueblo, community forums, and outreach workshops.

Derechos Sin Fronteras - Twelve teen peer educators
learned about sexual and reproductive health, leadership, and facilitation skills at weekly training sessions throughout the school year. They utilized fun,
interactive activities to share what they learned with
other youth and parents on topics such as sexual decision-making, prevention of unwanted pregnancies
and sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS,
and healthy communication about sex and sexuality.
Derechos Sin Fronteras - Doce promotores juveniles latinxs aprendieron acerca de salud sexual y reproductiva,
liderazgo y facilitación en las sesiones de entrenamiento semanales realizadas durante el año escolar; utilizaron actividades divertidas e interactivas para compartir lo aprendido
con otrxs jóvenes, así como con padres y madres sobre temas como la toma de decisiones sexuales, la prevención de
embarazos no deseados e infecciones de transmisión sexual
y el VIH-Sida y la comunicación sobre sexo y sexualidad.

Adult Leadership

Empowerment Groups - Thirty Latinas participated in a 12-week series of workshops for survivors
of domestic violence and sexual assault, where they
continued their healing process, improved their selfesteem and self-sufficiency, and began to facilitate
a community-level response to promote healthy
communities and families. They continued meeting
monthly to further their learning, develop their skills,
and plan actions to tackle issues of domestic violence
and sexual assault in their communities.

en una serie de 12 talleres semanales para sobrevivientes
de violencia doméstica y asalto sexual, donde continuaron
su proceso de sanación, desarrollaron su autoestima y comenzaron a facilitar una respuesta a nivel comunitario para

grupo siguió reuniéndose mensualmente para continuar el
aprendizaje y desarrollo de sus habilidades, así como planificar las acciones para enfrentar los problemas de violencia

Líderes de Salud - El Pueblo’s core group of lay
health advisors stayed engaged this year, helping to
guide programming for the organization and educating community members about health and wellness.
Lay health advisors advocated for accessible health
care and helped others get information and sign up
for healthcare through the Affordable Care Act. They
also helped others in their community by referring
them to free and low cost health care services and to
other community resources.

Social Justice Leaders - We piloted a new workshop
series to provide a framework for adults to get involved in El Pueblo and learn the basics for grassroots
organizing. Twenty-one adults participated and are
looking forward to using their new knowledge and
skills to support community actions in 2016.

HoMBReS por un Cambio - El Pueblo partnered
with Wake Forest University School of Medicine to
implement an HIV prevention program for Latino
men. Through this program, we trained Latino men
who are involved with local soccer teams to distribute
HIV/AIDS prevention information to their fellow soccer players, answer questions about ways to prevent
HIV/AIDS, and share resources for getting tested.
HoMBReS por un Cambio - El Pueblo se asoció con la
Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Wake Forest para
implementar un programa de prevención del VIH para hombres latinos. A través de este programa, hemos capacitado a
hombres latinos que están involucrados en equipos locales
de fútbol para que así ellos puedan compartir información
sobre la prevención del VIH/SIDA con sus compañeros en
sus equipos, responder preguntas acerca de las maneras de
prevenirlo y compartir información sobre dónde hacerse la
prueba del VIH.

El Pueblo staff and volunteers helped register, educate, and mobilize over 200 eligible voters. In September, we partnered with Delta Theta Sigma Sorority, Wake Up Wake County, and the League of Women
Voters of Wake County to host a forum so that community members could get to know the candidates
for Raleigh Mayor and City Council. Over 100 community members asked questions directly to the candidates, with simultaneous English/Spanish interpretation.

El Pueblo partnered with other organizations to advocate for pro-immigrant policies and fight back
against anti-immigrant policies on the state and local
level, joining with allies in the following ways:

• We supported the Adelante Education Coalition’s
efforts to promote in-state tuition. An inclusive
bill with bipartisan support was introduced and
resulted in new commitments from legislators to
support future efforts.
• We marched in the HKonJ People’s Assembly to
build support for a comprehensive agenda to ensure a high quality of life for all North Carolinians.

• We joined the national movement by participating in the National Latino Advocacy Days in
Washington DC. More than 25 leaders from El
Pueblo met directly with their congressional representatives.
• We advocated for comprehensive sexual education in Wake County Public Schools by surveying
community members on their priorities, meeting with school representatives, and coordinating with allies to understand the policy climate
around this issue.
• We partnered with groups such as “Sí a las licencias NC” to raise awareness of legislative proposals to expand access to driving privileges to
undocumented immigrants and to lobby against
anti-immigrant proposals, including HB 318. HB
318 targets immigrants and low-income people
by prohibiting some of the most common forms
of identification used by undocumented residents of North Carolina; banning sanctuary city
policies that limit local law enforcement’s collaboration with federal immigration authorities;
expanding the use of the E-Verify program; and
cutting food assistance for childless adults. This
law was passed in the final hours of the legislative
session, with no opportunity for public input, and
with inaccurate, racist, and hurtful portrayals of
the immigrant community on the part of the law’s
proponents. El Pueblo followed the lead of grassroots community members to respond to this law,
supporting daily rallies outside of the Governor’s
mansion calling upon him to veto, collecting petition signatures and urging phone calls to his office, and finally supporting a civil disobedience
action to express our outrage and dismay at this
assault on the dignity of the immigrant community.
•

ampliar el acceso de inmigrantes indocumentadxs a
las licencias de conducir y para ejercer presión contra
las propuestas anti-inmigrantes, incluyendo la ley HB
318. Dicha ley está dirigida a inmigrantes y personas
de bajos ingresos, prohibiendo algunas de las formas
más comunes de identificación utilizadas por lxs residentes indocumentadxs de Carolina del Norte; prohibe
las ciudades de santuario que limitan la colaboración
de la policía local con las autoridades federales de inmigración; amplía el uso del programa E-Verify; y corta
la asistencia alimenticia a lxs adultxs sin hijxs. Esta ley
se aprobó en las últimas horas de la sesión legislativa,
sin oportunidad para la opinión pública, y con representaciones inexactas, racistas, y dañinas a la comunidad

• We celebrated our 20th anniversary of being an incorporated non-profit organization.
• We received an award at iNSIDEoUT’s Ninth Annual Awards Banquet and Gaiety for hosting
a workshop about LGBTQ+ issues through the Pueblo Power Program.
• El Pueblo youth received an award at the Youth Organizing Institute’s 3rd Annual Ella Baker
Gala for their youth organizing work.
• We added a new Communications Coordinator and celebrated the 5-year anniversary of
staff member Tania Durán and the 10-year anniversary of staff member Cecilia Saloni.
• We expanded youth presence in our governance by inducting two Youth Council members
onto the Board of Directors.
• We providing training for more than 50 adult and 130 youth leaders.

In 2015, El Pueblo received $829,947 in income: 52%
from foundations, 22% from government grants, 10%
from non-profit and corporate donors, 10% from special events, and 6% from individual donors and other
sources. Total expenses for 2015 were $850,036. Program costs accounted for 83% of El Pueblo’s expenses, while 17% went to administrative and fundraising
costs.

Are you a state employee? If you are a state employee, you can sign up to donate to El Pueblo via payroll
deduction, using our organization number 3649. You
can also request a charity fair at your workplace so El
Pueblo and other organizations can attend.
