e plus bel hommage que l’on puisse rendre au président Samaranch est,
me semble-t-il, d’avoir su adapter l’Olympisme à l’évolution de la
société. Une telle action mérite notre admiration car nous constatons
les difficultés auxquelles nous sommes confrontés pour faire évoluer notre
sport.
Certes, les Jeux de Sydney ont montré que l’escrime pouvait être médiatique et qu’un grand pas a été fait quant à l’organisation de nos compétitions. Mais ceci n’est pas suffisant et nous devons être sensibles aux critiques
qui nous sont faites car si nous n’évoluons pas, nous courrons le risque
d’une remise en cause totale de notre culture. Il s’agit de savoir distinguer les
éléments essentiels de notre tradition afin de les conserver tout en éliminant
ce qui n’a plus sa raison d’être compte tenu de l’évolution technologique. Si
nous ne sommes pas capables de faire ce choix nous serons submergés par
des «révolutionnaires» simplistes qui nous conduirons à l’arme unique du
fait de leur méconnaissance des «arts martiaux occidentaux».
Chacune de nos armes a sa raison d’être et il faut garder la spécificité du
fleuret, de l’épée et du sabre. Mais nous devons rendre chacune d’elle compréhensible par le public et éliminer la subjectivité qui sévit dans les armes
conventionnelles. Cette subjectivité est mal perçue pour la simple raison que
la technologie utilisée pour le marquage des touches doit permettre une
solution logique dans le cadre de le «convention».
Chacun est conscient actuellement que notre sport est enfin organisé
comme nous l’avons préconisé depuis huit ans et qu’un grand pas a été franchi vers sa médiatisation. Il faut parfaire notre évolution en modifiant certains points de notre règlement.
Il faut également moderniser nos équipements que ce soit avec l’appareil
sans fil ou le masque à visière transparente. Les batailles d’arrière-garde n’ont
plus lieu d’être et en tout état de cause ont fait beaucoup de mal à notre discipline. Nous voulons faire entrer le sabre féminin aux JO d’Athènes.
Qu’avons nous fait pour mériter cette faveur? Ceux qui ont donné à notre
sport le coup de pied de l’âne, lorsque nous avons proposé des équipements
plus médiatiques pour Sydney, sont-ils aujourd’hui satisfaits?
Des propositions sont faites pour le prochain congrès. Nous devons saisir
l’opportunité qui nous est offerte pour évoluer avec notre temps comme
l’ont fait tous les autres sports. Le «temps d’escrime» doit être chronométrique et la surface non valable au fleuret ne plus faire l’objet d’une touche
non valable. Nous devons simplifier la compréhension de la convention
sinon nous risquons de voir simplifier l’escrime avec l’arme unique. Ce n’est
qu’à ce prix que notre sport sortira de son ésotérisme et retrouvera la faveur
des médias et du grand public.
Il n’est pas question de pistes rondes ou carrées. Tous les sports ont des
terrains de jeux bien délimités qui ne se justifient pas plus que notre aire de
combat. Il n’est pas question d’acquiescer aux propositions ridicules réduisant notre sport à une seule arme car, alors, pourquoi pas une seule nage en
natation et une seule course en athlétisme! Soyons vigilants et améliorons la
compréhension de nos compétitions. Conservons notre culture qui est une
des composantes de l’Olympisme. Les petites querelles électoralistes doivent
maintenant céder le pas à un grand mouvement de rénovation de notre
sport. ●

E
t seems to me that the greatest compliment one could pay President
Samaranch is to say that he was able to adapt the Olympic movement
to the changes in society. To have done this deserves our admiration as
we realise the difficulties we ourselves have faced in evolving our own
sport.
It is true that the Sydney Games proved that fencing can be a media
success and that we have come a long way in the organisation of our
competitions. But it is not enough and we still have to take on board the
criticisms made of us: if we don’t move with the times we risk having our
very existence questioned. We must be able to identify the absolute
essentials among our traditions so that we can preserve them while getting rid of everything which no longer serves any useful purpose bearing
in mind the advances in technology. If we cannot make the choice ourselves we will be overrun by simplistic “revolutionaries” who, because of
their lack of understanding of “western martial arts”, will reduce us to
having one single weapon.
Each of our weapons has its rationale and we must preserve the individual natures of foil, épée and sabre. But we must make each one of
them comprehensible to the public and eliminate the subjectivity which is
rife in the conventional weapons. This subjectivity is seen as negative simply because the technology involved in signalling the hits ought to permit
a logical solution within the parameters of the “convention”.
Everyone is aware now that our sport is at last being run in the way we
have been recommending for the last eight years and that a big step has
been taken in making it more media-friendly. We now have to complete
our evolution by modifying a number of points in our rules.
We must also bring our equipment up to date, whether it is with the
wire-less apparatus or the transparent mask. Rear-guard battles are no
longer justified and by any reckoning have done our sport a good deal of
harm. We want to have women’s sabre in the Athens Games—but what
have we done to deserve it? Are those people now satisfied who gave
our sport such a kick in the teeth when we suggested more mediafriendly equipment for Sydney?
Proposals have been made for the next Congress. We must take hold
of this opportunity to develop with the times, as have all the other sports.
‘Fencing time’ must become a chronometric concept and non-valid target
areas at foil must stop signalling non-valid hits. We must simplify the
comprehensibility of the conventions or we risk seeing fencing simplified
into a single weapon. Only by doing so can we take fencing out of its
arcane obscurity and regain the approval of the media and the public.
There is no question of fencing on square or round pistes. Every sport
has its playing area well established with no more rationale than our
own. There is no question of going along with ludicrous suggestions that
we reduce our sport to a single weapon—why not then have just one
stroke at swimming and one distance at athletics? Let us be watchful and
improve understanding of our competitions. Let us preserve our culture,
which is one of those which are basic to the Olympic Movement. Petty
electoral squabbles must now make way for a wide-spread move towards
rejuvenating our sport. ●

la sociedad. Tal acción merece nuestra admiración puesto que constatamos las dificultades a las que nos enfrentamos para hacer evolucionar a
nuestro deporte.
Ciertamente, los Juegos de Sidney han mostrado que la esgrima podía ser
mediática y que se había dado un gran paso en cuanto a la organización de
nuestras competiciones. Pero esto no es suficiente y debemos ser sensibles a
las criticas que se nos hacen ya que si no evolucionamos corremos el riesgo de
poner en tela de juicio toda nuestra cultura. Se trata de saber distinguir los
elementos esenciales de nuestra tradición a fin de conservarlos todos, eliminando lo que ya no tiene razón de ser habida cuenta de la evolución tecnológica. Si no somos capaces de hacer esta elección seremos “hundidos” por los
revolucionarios simplistas que nos conducirán al arma única por el mero
hecho de su desconocimiento de las “artes marciales occidentales”.
Cada una de nuestras armas tiene su razón de ser y hay que guardar la
especificidad del florete, de la espada y del sable. Pero debemos hacer a cada
una de ellas comprensibles para el público y eliminar la subjetividad que hace
estragos en las armas convencionales. Esta subjetividad se percibe mal por la
simple razón de que la tecnología utilizada para la anotación de los tocados
debe permitir implementación tecnológica de la convención.
Cada uno es consciente actualmente de que nuestro deporte está organizado como lo hemos preconizado desde hace ocho años y que se ha dado un
gran paso hacia su mediatización. Hay que completar nuestra evolución
modificando algunos puntos de nuestro reglamento.
Igualmente, hay que modernizar nuestros equipamientos tanto con el aparato sin hilo o la careta de visera transparente. Las batallas de retaguardia ya
no tienen razón de ser y en cualquier caso perjudican mucho a nuestra disciplina. Queremos hacer entrar al sable femenino en los Juegos Olímpicos de
Atenas. ¿Que hemos hecho para merecer este favor?. Aquellos que dieron
coces a nuestro deporte, cuando propusimos equipamientos más mediáticos
para Sidney, ¿están ahora satisfechos?.
Las propuestas están hechas para el próximo Congreso. Debemos aprovechar la oportunidad que se nos ofrece para evolucionar con nuestro tiempo
como han hecho todos los demás deportes. El “tiempo de esgrima” debe ser
cronometrable y la superficie válida al florete no debe encender la luz de
blanco no válido. Debemos simplificar la comprensión de la convención porque si no corremos el riesgo de ver simplificar la esgrima con el arma única.
Únicamente a este precio nuestro deporte saldrá de su esoterismo y recuperará el favor de los medios de comunicación y del gran público.
No es cuestión de pistas redondas o cuadradas. Todos los deportes tiene
terrenos de juego bien delimitados que no se justifican mucho más que nuestra área de combate. No es cuestión de avenirse a las proposiciones ridículas
que reducen a nuestro deporte a una sola arma ya que, entonces, ¿por qué
no un sólo estilo en natación y una sola carrera en atletismo?. Estemos atentos y mejoremos la comprensión de nuestras competiciones. Conservemos
nuestra cultura que es una de las que componen el olimpismo. Las pequeñas
querellas electoralistas deben ahora ceder el paso a un gran movimiento de
renovación de nuestro deporte. ●

et homme était un monument. A près
de 96 ans, il était le plus ancien médaillé
d’or olympique: médaille d’or au fleuret par
équipes en 1932 (Los Angeles) et médaille
d’argent en 1936 (Berlin). Mais sa carte de
visite affichait d’autres titres de gloire : une
grande carrière d’avocat et la signature de
l’armistice de 1945.
René Bondoux a eu trois vies. Escrimeur de
haut niveau jusqu’à l’âge de trente et un ans
(champion de France universitaire puis militaire, médaille d’argent aux Championnats
du monde universitaires de 1927 à l’épée et
en 1928 au fleuret), l’ancien élève de l’école
de Saumur est mobilisé en 1940 comme officier de cavalerie. Fait prisonnier, il s’évade
pour rejoindre la France libre en Afrique, il
vivra toute l’épopée de la Libération et prendra même, après le débarquement de Provence en août 1944, le commandement d’un
escadron blindé au sein de la première armée
française. Le 8 mai 1945 à Berlin, directeur de
cabinet du général de Lattre de Tassigny, il est
l’un des trois seuls témoins français de la
capitulation allemande. La paix revenue,
René Bondoux retrouve le cabinet qu’il avait
ouvert en 1938 pour poursuivre une brillante
carrière d’avocat parisien, sa troisième vie.
Très rapidement, il s’entourera de nombreux
collaborateurs et sa notoriété grandissante
fera qu’en 1963, Maître Bondoux est élu par
ses pairs bâtonnier à la cours d’appel de Paris,
premier barreau de France. A quatre-vingtonze ans, il plaidait encore de sa voix magnifique et le port altier. Parce que cet homme a
eu un destin exceptionnel, qu’il a été acteur
plus que spectateur d’un siècle douloureux, la
France reconnaissante l’a fait grand officier de
la Légion d’Honneur par les mains présidentielles de Jacques Chirac. René Bondoux était
aussi grand officier de l’Ordre national du
mérite, titulaire de la Croix de guerre 19391945, de la rosette de la Résistance, de la
médaille des évadés et de la Distinguished
Service Cross. Il était également membre de
l’Académie des sports et avait été élu gloire
du sport français en 1996. Le temps semblait
ne pas l’atteindre et pourtant il nous a quittés
le 6 mai dernier. ●

René Bondoux tuvo tres vidas. Esgrimidor de
alto nivel hasta la edad de treinta y un años
(campeón de Francia universitario, después

era también Gran Oficial de la Orden Nacional
del Mérito, titular de la Cruz de Guerra 19391945, de la insignia de la Resistencia, de la
medalla de los Evadidos y de la Cruz de Servicios Distinguidos. Era igualmente miembro de
la Academia de Deportes y había sido elegido
gloria del deporte francés en 1996. El tiempo
no parecía alcanzarle y sin embargo nos dejó el
pasado 6 de mayo. ●

importants. L’escrime, depuis
toujours, est l’un des sports permanents. La comité organisateur et la cité hôte a le droit de
choisir trois sports en option.
C’est à Pékin qu’aura lieu, du
22 août au 1er septembre 2001,
la vingt-et-unième Universiade
d’été. Le village de l’Universiade
pourra accueillir jusqu’à sept
mille personnes, compétiteurs
et officiels confondus.
Les épreuves d’escrime se
dérouleront du 23 au 30 août aux
six armes, en individuel et par
équipes. Elles se disputeront dans
la salle des Sports de Shijingshan,
située dans l’ouest de Pékin, qui
se trouve à vingt-neuf kilomètres
du village des athlètes.
Six cents tireurs venus d’une
quarantaine de pays sont attendus. La salle principale a une
capacité de trois mille sièges. Les
entraînements auront lieu dans
la salle du Centre National d’escrime équipée de vingt pistes et
située à cinq minutes en voiture
de la salle des compétitions.

día con 129 federaciones deportivas universitarias nacionales. Cada dos años, organiza la Universiada de verano, uno de los eventos deportivos
pluridisciplinares más importantes. La esgrima,
desde siempre, es uno de los deportes permanentes.
El comité organizador y la ciudad anfitriona tiene el
derecho de escoger tres deportes opcionales.
Es en Pekín donde tendrá lugar, del 22 de
agosto al 1º de septiembre de 2001, la vigésimo
primera Universiada de verano. La villa de la
Universiada podrá acoger hasta siete mil personas, entre competidores y oficiales.
Las pruebas de esgrima se desarrollarán del
23 al 30 de agosto a las seis armas, individual y
por equipos. Se disputarán en el Polideportivo de
Shijingshan, situado al oeste de Pekín, que se
encuentra a veintinueve kilómetros de la villa de
los atletas.
Son esperados seiscientos tiradores venidos de
una cuarentena de países. La sala principal tiene
una capacidad de tres mil personas. Los entrenamientos tendrán lugar en la sala del Centro
Nacional de Esgrima equipado con veinte pistas y
situado a cinco minutos en auto de la sala de
competición. Algunos tiradores ya han tenidos la
suerte de conocerlos durante la Copa del mundo
de florete masculino y femenino del pasado mes
de marzo.
La comisión de esgrima, compuesta por Li
Xin, vicepresidente, Wang Wei, secretario general y Hu Xiaotian, director de relaciones internacionales de la Asociación China de Esgrima trabaja desde hace varios meses en la preparación
de las pruebas de esgrima. El representante de
la FIE será Peter Jacobs, secretario-tesorero.

stage de formation de cadres du 2 au 12 février 2001 à Koweït City. Parmi la vingtaine
de participants, plusieurs d’entre eux avaient
déjà suivi les deux stages précédents en 1997
et en 2000. Le maître Perrin a été très satisfait
de la qualité du travail produit dans une
ambiance à la fois sérieuse et conviviale. Il a
remis aux stagiaires des diplômes de moniteurs d’escrime concrétisant ainsi leur fidélité
à cette formation. ●

l’amateurisme est encore
de règle considèrent, à
juste titre, qu’ils doivent être
traités comme de vrais professionnels puisqu’ils pratiquent
leur discipline comme des professionnels tant le niveau des
performances l’exige. L’escrime
n’échappe bien sûr pas à ce phénomène, ce qui n’est pas sans
poser quelques problèmes.
Pour les sportifs professionnels les choses sont claires: ils
sont engagés par contrat et
payés, parfois trop, pour participer à des compétitions dont le
spectacle est généralement
payant. En contrepartie ils sont
astreints au respect de règles
contractuelles qu’ils ont signées.
S’il y a non-respect du contrat
par qui que ce soit ou conflit
d’intérêts, cela se règle par les
voies juridiques habituelles à
l’aide d’avocats et de tribunaux.
Tel n’est pas le cas des sportifs
amateurs qui ne sont en général
liés par aucun contrat avec leur
fédération, leur association ou
leur club. Ils ne sont tenus
qu’au respect d’une certaine
éthique, s’ils le veulent bien.
Cela mène parfois à des comportements inacceptables.
Le CIO a confié à une société
de production américaine le
soin de produire le film officiel
des J.O. de Sydney. Les producteurs de cette société ont pour la
première fois décidé d’inclure
dans le scénario de ce film des
interviews d’escrimeurs. Pour ce
faire, ils avaient choisi les protagonistes de la finale de l’épée
masculine par équipe, estimant
que cette finale revêtait l’aspect
dramatique qui convenait parfaitement à leur film. A cette fin,
en novembre 2000, ils essayè-
rent de prendre contact avec certains acteurs de cette finale par
l’intermédiaire de leurs fédérations respectives. N’obtenant
aucune réponse des uns et des
autres malgré un certain nombre

(UER) situé au milieu de la verdure dans la
commune du Grand-Saconnex (banlieue de
Genève), que le président René Roch et
Henri Perez, directeur du Département des
opérations de l’UER, ont signé le 18 avril
dernier le contrat liant la Fédération internationale d’escrime (FIE) et l’UER pour les trois
prochains championnats du monde.
«C’est une première pour l’UER et nous
testons avec les compétitions de la FIE ce
nouveau type d’accord dans lequel nous plaçons beaucoup d’espoir pour l’avenir», a
déclaré Henri Perez, au moment de la signature du contrat. En effet, pour la première
fois, l’UER signe directement avec une fédération sportive pour la retransmission télévisée de grands événements sportifs sans passer par un de ses membres.
Cette signature fut suivie d’une courte
réception, au cours de laquelle René Roch
s’est félicité «de cet accord qui permettra
une large diffusion d’images de qualité des
championnats du monde et, quand cela sera
possible, d’épreuves de la Coupe du monde
des différentes armes durant la saison».

Radiodifusión (UER) situado en medio de
la campiña en el municipio de Grand Sacconex
(alrededores de Ginebra), donde el presidente
René Roch y Henri Pérez, director del departamento de operaciones de la UER, firmaron el
pasado 18 de abril el contrato que una a la Federación internacional de esgrima (FIE) y a la UER
para los próximos tres Campeonatos del Mundo.
“Es un estreno para la UER y probamos con las
competiciones de la FIE este nuevo tipo de acuerdo
en el cual tenemos mucha esperanza para el
futuro” declaró Henri Pérez, en el momento de la
firma del contrato. En efecto, por primera vez, la
UER firma directamente con una federación deportiva para la retransmisión televisada de los grandes eventos deportivos sin pasar por uno de sus
miembros.
El evento fue seguido de una corta recepción, en
el curso de la cual René Roch se felicitó de “este
acuerdo que permitirá una amplia difusión de
imágenes de calidad de los Campeonatos del
mundo y, cuando esto sea posible, de las pruebas
de la copa del mundo de las diferentes armas
durante la temporada”. René Roch y Henri Pérez,
así como las personas presentes, hicieron seguidamente un brindis por el éxito de esta colaboración.
Previamente, René Roch acompañado de
Jochen Färber, jefe de prensa de la FIE, y de Bernard Dumont, director de comunicación de la FIE,
quedaron impresionados con el conjunto de instalaciones técnicas del local de Ginebra, guiados por
Georges Béry, ingeniero belga del centro técnico de

«M
aman, j’ai gagné!» A Poznan,
à quelques heures de route de
Gdansk, Stefania Wojtkowiak, l’oreille collée à son téléphone portable,
fond en larmes. Son bonheur est profond, sa
fierté incommensurable. Cette fois, c’est sûr,
sa fille, sa petite Malgorzata, est une grande.
Elle est championne du monde junior au fleuret. Dans son pays, un vendredi 13. Mais le
sacre de Malgorzata Wojtkowiak ne doit rien
à la chance. Cette championne de dix-neuf
ans, qui sait allier la grâce et la manière, est
une reine. Et même une bénédiction pour la
Pologne sportive. Malgorzata, en effet, tout la
distingue. En dehors de la piste, sa joie de
vivre, son sourire, son entrain. Sur la piste, sa
technique qui s’est beaucoup affinée depuis
ses médailles de bronze en cadet et en junior
les deux années précédentes, son sens tactique, son dynamisme et sa force de caractère
qui lui permettent de ne jamais baisser les
bras, de ne jamais laisser la situation complètement lui échapper. Rien n’a été de trop.
Car le parcours de Malgorzata Wojtkowiak, ce
vendredi 13 avril, fut loin d’être un jardin de
roses. Ne s’est-elle pas retrouvée à deux
reprises au moins au bord du gouffre ? La
preuve : Wojtkowiak n’était pas seulement
menée 12 à 6 par la Chinoise Liu Yuan, dont
l’incontestable talent aurait mérité un
meilleur sort en quart de finale. Mais ensuite,
à nouveau en demi-finale, cruelle expérience,
par sa compatriote et amie, la très fairplay Sylwia Gruchala, vedette locale
déjà riche de très nombreux trophées
chez les seniors, qui n’avait plus qu’à
produire un dernier effort, à pousser
un dernier cri, à souffler le froid sur de
chauds espoirs, et la fille de Stefania,
inconsolable, en serait réduite à appeler sa mère pour lui dire, désarmée :
« J’ai perdu ». C’est le sport. La roche
Tarpéienne y est souvent proche du
Capitole.
Au reste, en ces moments critiques,
qui, même parmi les plus inconditionnels de ses supporters venus nombreux, aurait parié un zloty sur les
chances de la fleurettiste de Poznan de
réaliser son rêve? Pour répondre, pas
besoin de savants sondages dans la
salle des sports de l’Université de
Gdansk : personne. C’est pourtant
lorsque tout semblait perdu, lorsque le
destin contraire aurait pu l’accabler
que Malgorzata Wojtkowiak fut la plus magnifique. Son étoile a vacillé mais pas un instant,
elle n’a tremblé. Ses épaules ne se sont pas tassées, elle est juste descendue un peu plus sur
ses jambes, la pointe de son fleuret est restée
en ligne, à l’affût. Une lionne. Indomptable
et transcendante.
«A chaque fois, je me suis dit que si je parvenais à porter la prochaine touche, je pouvais
encore gagner», confiera-t-elle. Touche après
touche donc, elle a conquis son titre, comme
on construit sa maison, pierre après pierre, et
sa vie, jour après jour. Malgorzata avait douze
ans quand elle découvrit l’escrime à l’occasion

lui fait les yeux doux. D’autant que l’escrime
polonaise ne parviendra pas à conquérir
d’autres titres à Gdansk. Toutefois, il est
d’autres notoires performances qui valent
bien des médailles d’or. Il en va ainsi de la
gentillesse et du professionnalisme de chaque
instant manifestés par le recteur de l’Université des sports de Gdansk, Janusz Czerwinski,
et le président de la Fédération polonaise d’escrime, l’ancien champion de fleuret, Adam
Lisewski: les organisateurs de ces Championnats du monde, simples mais de bon ton,
méritent effectivement tous les éloges et tous
les honneurs. Au demeurant, pas une fois,
tout au long de ces huit journées de compéti-

démonté. Avec un calme de mousquetaire, il
a sorti de sa housse d’escrime son téléphone
portable, appuyé sur le petit clavier magique
et annoncé d’une voix neutre à son père qu’il
ne s’était pas déplacé à Gdansk en vain.
Champion du monde, mission accomplie.
Mais le portable ne peut pas tout dire. Surtout,
il ne peut pas tout montrer. Or Gauthier Grumier a particulièrement bien inauguré ces
huit journées d’escrime dans la ville hanséatique polonaise. Il a été sensationnel. Intuitif,
patient, précis, vif. En un mot parfait. Sa supériorité prend tout son sens avec ses scores en
demi-finale et en finale: 15 à 8 aux dépens de
l’Italien Stefano Vogna et 15 à 6 face à
l’Ukrainien Alexi Tychko. Un monde d’écart.
Également en avance sur leur âge: le sabreur
cadet français Clément Martin qui a fait coup
double après avoir déjà démontré qu’il était
de la graine de champion l’an dernier à South
Bend. Ou le fleurettiste cadet italien Andrea
Cassara, dont l’escrime acrobatique et en
mouvements n’est pas sans rappeler celle, efficace, de ses glorieux aînés Andrea Borella et
Stefano Cerioni. Toujours côté médailles d’or,
dans la même catégorie mais dans un genre
différent, on a pu tout autant apprécier
l’agréable classicisme de la fleurettiste russe
Vittoria Nikichina et la prometteuse assurance
de la Roumaine Anna Maria Branza, qui, la
première, a justifié la décision de sa fédération
nationale de créer un centre d’entraînement
pour les épéistes féminines à Craiova.
Lors d’un rassemblement mondial juniors et
cadets, l’œil des maîtres brille toujours d’un
éclat particulier. L’éclat de la nouveauté. Ils
ne perdent pas une miette des techniques,
des tactiques, des styles et des physiques des
jeunes escrimeurs. Mais, lorsque s’y ajoute
une réelle dose de génie, c’est toute l’escrime
mondiale qui s’émerveille et se prend à rêver.
À cet égard, s’il n’y a pas de mauvais champion du monde, il est au moins un médaillé
d’argent qui a un profil de vainqueur. Il s’agit
d’abord de l’étincelant fleurettiste polonais
cadet Pietrusiak. Attaques directes, ripostes
composées, deuxièmes contre-ripostes : ses
gammes ont l’enchantement de celles d’un
disciple de Chopin. De purs chefs-d’œuvre.

Sa vélocité ? Remarquable. Ses improvisations ? Imprévisibles. Son flegme ? Hallucinant. Davantage qu’un oiseau rare, un prodige. Avec cette certitude: s’il continue l’escrime sous la férule des champions de
l’ex-Union soviétique qui ont franchi l’Atlantique avec leur diplôme de maître d’armes et
forment de jeunes champions à la pelle, Ivan
Lee a un premier rôle à jouer dans l’escrime
du futur.
Il n’empêche. La vraie star de ces championnats du monde, ce ne fut pas Malgorzata
Wojtkowiak, pas Gauthier Grumier, pas Clément Martin ni même l’impressionnant Allemand Wessels, dominateur chez les juniors au
fleuret, ou encore le fameux Américain Ivan
Lee. Non. La vraie star de ces championnats
du monde s’appelle Mariel Zagunis. Impériale
du premier au dernier jour. Victoires en
cadets, en juniors et par équipes. Trois
médailles d’or au sabre sans crier gare pour
enfoncer le clou: l’escrime américaine est bien
en marche. Sa seule alerte : en demi-finale
cadets contre la Française Léonore Perrus qui
lui tint la dragée haute au point de mener
14 à 13. Son plus beau fait d’armes: sa victoire
(15 à 13) en demi-finale juniors contre une
autre Française, Anne-Lise Touya, double
championne du monde en 1999 et 2000, à

Mais l’escrime bouge et les champions d’hier

se développe sur tous les continents grâce à
l’action de la FIE qui encourage et aide les
pays à réaliser leurs ambitions – même les
sabreurs juniors iraniens ont fait bonne figure.
Témoin aussi cette initiative en lien direct
avec le rendez-vous de Gdansk: pour la première fois, la FIE a invité des escrimeurs de
trois confédérations (Asie/Océanie, Afrique et
Amérique dont Ivan Lee) à participer aux
championnats du monde cadets et juniors,
tous frais payés. Parallèlement, l’exode de très
nombreux maîtres d’armes de l’ancien bloc de
l’Est vers des eldorados financiers contribue à
faire de l’escrime un sport effectivement international au plus haut niveau : quatorze
nations – parmi lesquelles l’Allemagne s’est
adjugée la Coupe des nations – ont quitté
Gdansk auréolées de médailles. Un sport
mondial. Où l’on a également enregistré que
l’Ukraine pointe le nez, que la Russie relève la
tête, et qu’avec une brillante délégation de
juniors qui ont raflé pas moins de sept
médailles, la Chine impressionne en dépit de
son manque de contacts internationaux qui
l’ont vraisemblablement privée d’un ou de
plusieurs titres mondiaux.
C’est qu’on n’accède pas aux plus hautes
marches des podiums avec, pour tout bagage,
quelques beaux battements de fer et de
longues séances d’entraînement. Il faut de la
patience pour assimiler la technique, du courage pour se fabriquer une condition phy-
sique, mais aussi une présence quasiment permanente en compétition pour se faire une
expérience. La patte du maître et la touche de
l’escrimeur : de tous temps, la formule
magique a payé. A de rares exceptions près,
les Etats-Unis ont mis longtemps avant de
reprendre la recette à leur compte mais dorénavant le doute n’est plus permis. D’abord,
leurs jeunes. A Gdansk, ils se sont emparés de
neuf médailles dont quatre titres (le deuxième
total derrière la France: douze médailles mais
«seulement» trois titres). Demain, leurs aînés?
Ce nouveau rêve américain ne relève probablement plus de la pure utopie. L’escrime
mondiale a d’ailleurs tout à y gagner. En effet,
plus Marielle Zagunis, Ivan Lee ou Iris Zimmerman auront de petits frères et de petites
sœurs qui feront retentir l’hymne à la gloire
de la bannière étoilée, plus les télévisions
ouvriront leurs lucarnes à l’escrime, et plus la
considération du Comité international olympique lui sera acquise.
À Gdansk, ville millénaire, l’escrime n’a pas
seulement redécouvert l’Amérique. Elle a
encore avancé ses pions sur la voie de la
modernité. En ce sens aussi, les organisateurs
de ces championnats du monde ont prouvé
qu’ils n’avaient pas besoin de luxueuses installations pour se conformer de très près aux
exigences de la FIE. En ce sens toujours, les
gestes exécutés par les arbitres pour faire
connaître leurs décisions commencent à
entrer dans les têtes. L’escrime, sur ce plan, a
pris comme référence le judo et il n’y a pas
meilleur gage de tradition et de vitalité. En ce
sens enfin, la deuxième place des épéistes
cadettes roumaines, emmenées par Anna
Maria Branza, dans l’épreuve par équipes
juniors, a tout bonnement valeur d’exemple.
On les imagine toutes les trois pendues à leurs
téléphones portables pour répandre la bonne
nouvelle : « Papa, maman, on a gagné la
médaille d’argent et on l’a gagnée avec nos
masques à visière transparente ! » A bons

“M
amá, he ganado”. En Poznan, a
algunas horas de carretera de
Gdansk, Stefania Wojtkowiak, la
oreja pegada a su teléfono móvil, hecha un mar de
lágrimas. Su alegría es profunda, su orgullo inconmensurable. Esta vez, es seguro, su hija, su
pequeña Malgorzata, es una grande. Es campeona
del mundo júnior en florete. En su país, un viernes
13. Pero el éxito de Malgorzata Wojtkowiak no
debe nada a la suerte. Esta campeona de 19 años,
que sabe conjugar elegancia y estilo, es una reina.
E igualmente una bendición para el deporte en
Polonia. Todo, en efecto, distingue a Malgorzata.
Fuera de la pista, su alegría de vivir, su sonrisa, su
viveza. En pista, su técnica que se ha afinado
mucho después de sus medallas de bronce en
cadete y júnior los dos años precedentes, su sentido táctico, su dinamismo y su fuerza de carácter
que le permiten no bajar nunca los brazos, no dejar
jamás que la situación se le escape completamente.
Nada ha estado de más.
Porque la trayectoria de Malgorzata Wojtkowiak,
este viernes 13 de abril, estuvo lejos de ser un jardín de rosas. ¿No se encontró al menos en dos ocasiones al borde del precipicio?. La prueba: Wojtkowiak no estuvo solamente 12 a 6 con la atleta
china Liu Yuan, cuyo incontestable talento hubiera
merecido una mejor suerte en cuartos de final. Pero
después, de nuevo en semifinal, cruel experiencia,
con su compatriota y amiga la muy deportiva Sylwia Gruchala, vedette local ya rica en numerosos
trofeos en séniors, que no tenía más que producir
un último esfuerzo, dar un último grito, soplar el
frío sobre las calientes esperanzas, y la hija de Stefania, inconsolable, hubiera sido reducida a llamar
a su madre para decirle, desarmada: “he perdido”.
Es el deporte. La roca de Tarpes esta a menudo
cerca del capitolio.
Además, en estos momentos críticos, incluso entre
los más incondicionales de sus muy numerosos
seguidores, ¿quién hubiera apostado un zloty a
favor de la floretista de Poznan de realizar su
sueño?. Para responder, no hay necesidad de
sabios sondeos en la sala de deportes de la Universidad de Gdansk: nadie. Es, sin embargo,
cuando todo parecía perdido, cuando el destino
contrario la hubiera podido aplastar, cuando Malgorzata fue más magnífica. Su estrella vaciló pero
sólo por un instante pero, ella no tembló. Sus hombros no se hundieron, se agachó un poco sobre sus
piernas, la punta de su florete quedó en línea, al
acecho. Una leona, indomable y trascendente.
“Cada vez, me decía que si llegaba a poner el próximo tocado, todavía podía ganar”, confesaría.
Tocado tras tocado, conquistó su título, como se
construye una casa, piedra tras piedra, y su vida,
día tras día. Malgorzata tenía doce años cuando
descubrió la esgrima con motivo de una sesión de
iniciación en la escuela. Desde entonces, se entrena
cotidianamente, o prácticamente, en el peto del
Maestro Pawel Kantorski. “Adoro la esgrima”, se
ríe desde lo alto de su nube. Jamás, de hecho, se
había visto una campeona del mundo más feliz. Es
tan simple como esto.
Cuarenta y ocho horas más tarde, Polonia ganaba
la medalla de oro en florete por equipos por cuarto
año consecutivo (la tercera para Malgorzata).
“¡Mamá he vuelto a ganar!”. La historia no dice si
Stefania Wojtkowiak, la oreja todavía pegada a su
teléfono móvil, también lloró. La historia de amor,
en cualquier caso, continua. Y Polonia, es otra evidencia, acoge a su heroína con ojos enternecidos.
Razón de más pues la esgrima polaca no llegará a
conquistar otros títulos en Gdansk. Sin embargo,
hay otros éxitos notorios que bien valen medallas

manifestadas a cada instante por el Rector de la
Universidad de Gdansk, Janusz Czerwinski, y el Presidente de la Federación polaca de esgrima, el antiguo campeón de florete, Adam Lisewski: los organizadores de estos Campeonatos del Mundo, sencillos pero de buen tono, merecen efectivamente
todos los elogios y todos los honores. Por lo demás,
no sólo una vez, a lo largo de estas ocho jornadas
de competición, el presidente de la FIE, René Roch,
no olvidará rendirles públicamente un homenaje
tan sincero como caluroso.
Esta lejos el tiempo en el que estas pruebas de jóvenes no concernían prácticamente más que a las
naciones europeas, donde no necesitaban de
estructuras de acogida muy importantes y una
organización muy experimentada, donde el
ambiente relajado primaba ampliamente sobre el
perfeccionismo. Seguramente simpático, pero totalmente sobrepasado cuando los campeonatos del
mundo baten todos los records de participación:
829 en el 2000 en Southbend (USA, Indiana),
1064 del 8 al 16 de abril, en Gdansk. Un aumento
cuantitativo cada año pero igualmente cualitativo
ya que, incluso en los cadetes, la esgrima practicada ha mejorado –lo que en sí ya justifica la organización de una competición mundial para su categoría de edad (16 y 17 años) como existe en
muchas otras disciplinas, y especialmente en fútbol por citar el más difundido de los deportes.
“Papá, soy campeón”. Gauthier Grumier no había
esperado a Malgorzata Wojtkowiak para imponer
la última moda, la del móvil. El tocado ganador de
la primera final celebrada, la careta recién quitada,
las felicitaciones de los compañeros recientemente
recibidas, el espadista cadete francés –además tercero de la Copa del mundo júnior– no se inmutó.
Con la calma de un mosquetero, sacó de su saca
de esgrima su teléfono móvil, marcó en el pequeño
teclado mágico y anunció a su padre con una voz
neutra que no se había desplazado a Gdnask en
vano.
Campeón del Mundo, misión cumplida. Pero el
móvil no puede decir todo. Sobretodo, no puede
mostrarlo todo. Oro, Gauthier Grumier inauguró
particularmente bien estas ocho jornadas de
esgrima en la villa hanseática polaca. Estuvo sensacional. Intuitivo, paciente, preciso, vivaz. En una
palabra, perfecto. Su superioridad cobra todo su
sentido con sus tanteos en semifinal y en final: 15
a 8 a expensas del italiano Stefano Vogna y 15 a
6 contra el ucraniano Alexi Tychko. Un mundo de
diferencia.
Igualmente avanzado a su edad: el sablista
cadete Francés Clement Martin que ha hecho
doblete tras haber demostrado que tenía madera
de campeón el último año en Southbend. O el
floretista italiano Andrea Cassara, cuya esgrima
acrobática y en movimiento no deja de recordarnos aquella tan eficaz de sus gloriosos mayores Andrea Borella y Stefano Cerioni. Siempre
junto a las medallas de oro, en la misma categoría pero en un género diferente, se ha podido
también apreciar el agradable clasicismo de la
floretista rusa Vittoria Nikichina y la prometedora
confianza de la rumana Anna Maria Branza
quien justificó la decisión de su federación nacional de crear un centro de entrenamiento para las
espadistas femeninas en Craiova.

Durante un encuentro mundial júnior y cadete, los
ojos de los maestros brillan siempre con un resplandor especial. El resplandor de la novedad. Ellos
no pierden ni una migaja de las técnicas, de las
tácticas, de los estilos y de los físicos de los jóvenes
esgrimidores. Pero, cuando a esto añadimos una
dosis real de genio, es toda la esgrima mundial la
que se maravilla y se pone a soñar. En este sentido,
si no existe un mal campeón del mundo, es al
menos un medallista de plata quien tiene el perfil
de vencedor. Se trata en primer lugar del fulgurante
floretista polaco Pietrusiak. Ataques directos, respuestas compuestas, segundas contra respuestas:
sus gamas tienen el encanto de las de un discípulo
de Chopin. De puras obras maestras. En el mismo
orden de ideas, pero con toda otra paleta, hemos
remarcado las brillantes disposiciones del floretista
neocanadiense Khaled –vencido demasiado pronto
por el coreano Choi Byung Chui, su pesadilla– que
forma un tandem temible con Josh McGuire, campeón del mundo cadete en Southbend.
Finalmente, y sobre todo, estuvo el muy excepcional sablista americano Ivan Lee, que causó
hasta el final grandes sustos al húngaro Janosz
Decsi, sólido abanderado de la esgrima magiar y
campeón del mundo sin reproche. Mejor, aún a
riesgo de parecer injusto con el valeroso Decsi,
digámoslo claramente: Ivan Lee –que contribuiría
ampliamente a la victoria de los Estados Unidos
en el torneo por equipos– fue, sin duda, uno de
los mayores personajes de las competiciones de
Gdansk. ¿Su eficacia? Prodigiosa. ¿Su sentido de
la distancia? Sorprendente. ¿Sus desplazamientos? Aéreos. ¿Su velocidad? Notable. ¿Sus improvisaciones? Imprevisibles. ¿Su flema? Alucinante.
Más que un ave rara, un prodigio. Con esta certeza: si continua en la esgrima bajo la batuta de
los campeones de la ex-Unión Soviética que han
franqueado el Atlántico con su diploma de Maestro de Armas y forman jóvenes campeones en
abundancia, Ivan Lee tiene un papel estelar en la
esgrima del futuro.
Sin embargo. La verdadera estrella de estos Campeonatos del Mundo, no fue Malgorzata Wojtkowiak, ni Gauthier Grumier, ni Clement Martin ni
tampoco el impresionante alemán Wessels, dominador en los júniors en florete, o ni siquiera el
famoso americano Ivan Lee. No. La verdadera
estrella de estos campeonatos del mundo se llama
Mariel Zagunis. Imperial del primero al último día.

clavar el clavo: la esgrima americana está en marcha. Su única alerta: en la semifinal cadete contra
la francesa Leonore Perrus quien no le facilito la
tarea, hasta el punto de ponerse 14 a 13. Su más
bello hecho de armas: su victoria (15 a 13) en la
semifinal júnior contra otra francesa, Anne-Lise
Touya, doble campeona del mundo en 1999 y
2000, a quien la tercera victoria estaba predestinada.
Pero la esgrima se mueve y los campeones de ayer
no son a todas luces los de hoy. Además de AnneLise Toya, la floretista americana Iris Zimmerman,
campeona del mundo júnior en Southbend, la
espadista alemana Marijana Makovic, campeona
del mundo cadete en 1999, o el floretista francés
Bryce Guyart, campeón olímpico por equipos en
Sidney, y otros lo saben también. Todos han sido
destronados. No hay piedad para los ídolos: este
es el sentimiento dominante. Acabó la época en la
que un joven que tenía en su activo una o dos
bellas hazañas partía con una ventaja psicológica
determinante. En nuestros días, lo que más se produce, especialmente en el ámbito de los júniors y
los cadetes, es la homogeneidad del conjunto. Ya
no hay encuentros ganados de antemano, ni
adversarios fáciles ni únicamente los países europeos y raras excepciones.
El nivel general sube porque la esgrima se desarrolla en todos los continentes gracias a la acción
de la FIE que anima y ayuda a los países a realizar sus ambiciones –incluso los sablistas júnior iraníes hicieron un buen papel. Prueba también de
esta iniciativa en relación directa con la cita de
Gdnask, por primera vez, la FIE invitó a tiradores
de tres confederaciones (Asia/Oceania, África y

medallas. Un deporte mundial. Donde se ha igualmente notado que Ucrania se hace sentir, que
Rusia levanta cabeza y que con una brillante delegación de júniors se han llevado no menos de siete
medallas, China impresiona a pesar de su falta de
contactos internacionales que la han privado verdaderamente de uno o varios títulos mundiales.
Y es que no se accede a los más altos peldaños del
podium con, por todo bagaje, algunos bonitos
toques de hierro y largas sesiones de entrenamiento. Hace falta paciencia para asimilar la técnica, coraje para fabricarse una condición física,
pero también una presencia casi permanente en
competición para adquirir la experiencia. La mano
del maestro y el tocado del esgrimidor: de todos
los tiempos, la fórmula mágica funcionó. Salvo
raras excepciones como los Estados Unidos que
tomaron mucho tiempo antes de aplicar la fórmula, pero de ahora en adelante ya no está permitida la duda. Primero, sus jóvenes. En Gdansk,
se adueñaron de nueve medallas de las cuales
cuatro son títulos (la segunda en total detrás de
Francia: doce medallas pero ”solamente” tres títulos. ¿Mañana, sus mayores?. Este sueño americano no es probablemente más sólo pura utopía.
La esgrima mundial tiene por otra parte todo a
ganar. En efecto, además Marielle Zagunis, Ivan
Lee o Iris Zimmerman tendrán hermanos y hermanas pequeños que retendrán el himno a la gloria de la bandera estrellada, además las televisiones abrirán sus tragaluces a la esgrima y además
la consideración del Comité Olímpico Internacional le será otorgada.
En Gdansk, ciudad milenaria, la esgrima no sólo
ha redescubierto América. Movió incluso sus peones hacia la vía de la modernidad. En este sentido
también, los organizadores de estos campeonatos
del mundo han demostrado que no tenían necesidad de lujosas instalaciones para acomodarse a las
exigencias de la FIE. En este sentido siempre, los
gestos ejecutados por los árbitros para dar a conocer sus decisiones comienzan a entrar en las cabezas. La esgrima, en este plano, ha tomado como
referencia al judo y no hay mejor garantía de tradición y vitalidad. En este sentido en fin, la segunda
plaza de las espadistas cadetes rumanas, llevadas
por Anna Maria Branza, en la prueba por equipos
júnior, sirvió de buen ejemplo. Se las imaginan a
las tres colgadas de sus teléfonos móviles para dar
la buena noticia: ”¡papá, mamá, hemos ganado
la medalla de plata y ganamos con nuestras caretas con visera transparente!”. A buenos entendedores, saludos. ●

L’
escrime en Tunisie est une discipline
pratiquée depuis la première moitié
du XXe siècle. Elle s’est développée au
départ dans des cercles français, italiens et au
lycée Carnot, établissement scolaire français
très réputé à Tunis, qui ont permis l’émergence de grands escrimeurs, tel qu’Alberto
Pellegrino, tireur international et ancien
vice-président de la Fédération italienne d’escrime, disparu récemment. Certains escrimeurs tunisiens ont participé aux Jeux olympiques de 1956 à Melbourne et à ceux de
1960 à Rome. Les premiers maîtres d’armes
tunisiens ont été formés dans des établissements sportifs militaires.
Les Ves Jeux méditerranéens, organisés pour
la première fois en Tunisie en 1967, ont été
l’occasion de moderniser les équipements et
les moyens de travail, ce qui a entraîné, au
cours des années 70, un développement
appréciable tant au niveau quantitatif par
l’augmentation du nombre de clubs et de
licences, qu’au niveau qualitatif par l’obtention de meilleurs résultats continentaux et
internationaux.

a esgrima en Túnez es una disciplina practicada desde la primera mitad del siglo veinte.
Se desarrolló al principio en los círculos franceses, italianos y en el liceo Carnot, establecimiento
escolar francés muy reputado en Túnez, que permitieron la emergencia de grandes esgrimistas,
tales como Alberto Pellegrino, tirador internacional
y antiguo Vicepresidente de la Federación Italiana
de Esgrima, recientemente desaparecido. Algunos
esgrimistas tunecinos participaron en los Juegos
Olímpicos de 1956 en Melbourne y en 1960 en
Roma. Los primeros Maestros de Armas tunecinos
se formaron en los locales deportivos militares.
Los V Juegos Mediterráneos, organizados por primera vez en Túnez en 1967, dieron la oportunidad de modernizar los equipamientos y los métodos de trabajo, lo que permitó, a mediados de los
años 70, un desarrollo apreciable tanto en el
ámbito cuantitativo por el aumento del número de
clubes y licencias, como en el ámbito cualitativo por
la obtención de los mejores resultados continentales e internacionales.
La estrategia actual de la Federación Tunecina,
puesta en marcha desde hace seis años, con la
ayuda de la Federación Internacional de Esgrima,
se concreta en:
• una mejor apertura al ámbito internacional, el
fichaje de instructores técnicos extranjeros de
calidad y el reciclaje de los instructores tunecinos en colaboración con la Federación Alemana;
• una política de promoción de la esgrima en el
ámbito de los jóvenes, mediante la creación de

XIV Juegos Mediterráneos
Túnez 2001
Túnez ya ha tenido el privilegio de albergar en
1967, la V edición de los Juegos Mediterráneos. Sin
embargo, este año, Rades, situada a diez kilómetros al sur de Túnez, será el centro neurálgico de
los próximo Juegos que tendrán lugar del 2 al 15
de septiembre de 2001. Allí encontraremos las
siguientes estructuras:
• La villa mediterránea a algunos cientos de
metros del borde del mar acogerá a los deportistas y los oficiales de veintitrés disciplinas.
• La nueva Ciudad Deportiva del 7 de Noviembre de Rades, con su estadio de fútbol, su complejo náutico olímpico y su estadio de atletismo
constituirá el sitio principal de los Juegos. Las
competiciones de esgrima tendrán lugar allí.
• Una red de carreteras moderna une los veintisiete sitios de las eliminatorias y los veinte de las
finales para asegurar el transporte de los participantes en las mejores condiciones.
• Un centro médico-deportivo a la cabeza de la
tecnología médica ha sido construido para la
ocasión. ●

SPÉCIFICATIONS POUR LA FABRICATION DES LAMES
ANNEXE A AU RÈGLEMENT DU MATÉRIEL
Le congrès de la FIE de juillet 1994 a décidé
que les lames devaient être homologuées par
la SEMI pour que les fabricants soient autorisés à appliquer le label FIE sur leurs lames. Les
différentes productions seraient, en outre,
soumises à des contrôles périodiques.
Les lames portant le label FIE ne pourront être
utilisées que pendant les cinq années qui suivent la date figurant sur le label FIE (décisions
du congrès des 14 et 15 juillet 1995).
Ces décisions ont été appliquées et les résultats obtenus sont repris ci-dessous.

ESPECIFICACIONES PARA LA FABRICACIÓN DE HOJAS
ANEXO A AL REGLAMENTO PARA MATERIAL
El Congreso de la FIE de julio de 1994 decidió que
las hojas deberán ser homologadas por la SEMI
para que los fabricantes sean autorizados a poner
el sello FIE sobre sus hojas. Además, los diferentes
productos serán sometidos a controles periódicos.
Las hojas que tengan el sello FIE no podrán ser utilizadas más que durante los cinco años siguientes
a su fabricación, fecha que figura en el sello FIE
(decisión del Congreso del 14 y 15 de julio de
1995).
Estas decisiones fueron aplicadas y los resultados
fueron los siguientes:
