T
he readings this weekend come from the 1st
Century world of commerce and politics--there
was no "Wall Street," then, should we call it
"Beh Yehuda Street?" The first reading from Amos
takes place in a time of economic boom. People are
making more money than they've ever had--this was
really the only time in history that we know that there
was true "wealth" in northern Israel. We learn that
some people were sleeping on beds of carved ivory that
they had imported from India. It was a time of the rich
getting richer, and, of course, the poor getting worse!
Even the "good religious" people kept their eye on the
"clock," or its first century equivalent, for the second
that the Sabbath was over, so that they could start buying and selling (activities not allowed on the Sabbath,
itself.) Amos says, "You'd sell a poor man for a shoestring!" Could have been! The Gospel is the odd story
of the unjust steward who, as he finds he is being fired,
finds a way to compromise people so that he can later
blackmail them into hiring him. But the passage ends
with words to the effect, "Do you think God will entrust such a man with much of His 'finest, richest
gifts?'" And what might those rich gifts be? We move
to the 2nd reading: a life of gentleness and peacefulness, and we know that such a life is only born out of
honesty and truthfulness. Liars always create conflict.
So, the readings tell us that the religious, spiritual
peace we seek can only be found by living honestly
in the market places of our lives...but we already
knew that, didn't we? The difficulty isn't in memorizing the words, it's in living the message!

ur readings today warn us about how we use
“mammon”, which means property, not only money
in Aramaic. Fr. John Haughey, S.J. wrote a thoughtful book entitles The Holy Use of Money: Personal Finances in the Light of the Christian Faith. He describes
“mammon sickness” as having three interrelated aspects:
running after things, numbness in our relationships, and a
divided consciousness regarding God.
We are invited today to take our spiritual temperature to
see if we are suffering from a low-grade, or even a more
severe, case of “mammon sickness”. Where are we in
these matters? Our readings ask us to take our temperature and reflect on it. There can be a holy use of money,
to care for those most in need, thereby giving glory to
God.

ALL CATHOLIC SCHOOL PERSONNEL
EL PERSONAL DE ESCUELAS
Did you know that all Catholic school personnel in
the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are screened for
their ability to work safely with children, are provided information and training to help them recognize and deal with issues of child sexual abuse and are
offered guidance and instruction on appropriate professional conduct with students? Likewise, all seminarians and candidates for the diaconate go through
extensive evaluation and psychological assessment
before entering formation. After ordination, priests
and deacons receive ongoing training on maintaining
the integrity of the ministerial relationship.

Immediate Action Needed!
Help us stop SB 131 (Beall)! Current law treats victims of child sexual abuse the same, regardless of where the abuse
took place and regardless of whether the abuser worked for a public school, a private school or a religious organization.
A controversial bill winding its way through the state Legislature would change all that. Under SB 131, victims who
were abused by employees or volunteers of private or non-profit organizations would be able to sue those organizations
even if the statute of limitations was over. Victims who may have been abused in public schools or by government
workers, on the other hand, get nothing. As the bill is currently drafted, not only are they prevented from suing the
school, they can’t even sue the actual perpetrator who committed the abuse.
The California Catholic Conference opposes SB 131, and opposes discrimination against victims and private employers. SB 131 is also opposed by a growing coalition of that includes private schools and universities, the Police Activity League, the California YMCA/YWCA, USA Swim, USA Gymnastics, other religious groups and the La Raza
Roundtable de California. Visit www.cacatholic.org for more information and click “ACT NOW” for an email that
you can send to your Assembly Member.
