WJH outperforming state average
Wahluke Jr. High is off to an outstanding start for the 2014-2015 school year!
We started out the school year by receiving some exciting news from OSPI
that our students had outperformed the state average on the Washington English
Language Proficiency Assessment (WELPA)
last year! In fact,
it was the first
time ever that
students in 6th,
7th & 8th grade
all beat the state
average.
We believe
this is a direct result of our building-wide focus
on language &
vocabulary and
implementing
strategies over
the last two years
such as:
1. L-20 -- daily
20 minute, building-wide vocabulary intervention
2. Language
Academy -- daily,
targeted English
language intervention
3. Improving
overall instruction by offering
professional
development
throughout the
school year, summertime & weekends.
Another exciting area of growth at WJH has been the continued expansion of Career & Technical Education (CTE).
Every student is now introduced to Horticulture, Robotics, Wood Shop, Art, Digital Tools, Band, PE/Health as a
6th grader and then students are given the opportunity to
dive deeper in to a chosen area during 7th & 8th grade. We
believe this is helping to make more engaged, high-school
ready students.
Finally, our Pass The Peace campaign with Seattle Seahawk quarterback Russell Wilson to help end bullying &
domestic violence was a tremendous success! We raised over $1,000 for the
Why Not You foundation and our own reported cases of bullying & cyberbullying
has been cut nearly in half.

What House Are You In?
Mattawa Elementary
(ME) staff attended the
Ron Clark Academy in
October and since then
all students and staff at
ME have been sorted
and placed into one of six
“houses.”
If you are familiar with
the very popular Harry
Potter houses this is the
very same idea. The
names of the six houses
are; Enjouee, Isibindi,
Tamanwit, Verita, Esperanza, and Sisu. These
houses are just another way
to improve a sense of unity and teamwork, provide
opportunities for multi-age
groupings and activities, and
also find creative ways to
celebrate our students.
Mattawa Elementary staff
have embraced the idea of
houses and so far have organized and participated in:
1. Change Drive
competition between all the houses (money to buy presents
for ME families)
2. Canned food drive competition
3. Made blankets to give to Cozy Comforts
4. Sent cards to U.S. soldiers
5. Toy drive to benefit children in Pateros, Washington
6. Made scarves for a special friend
In addition, we have also incorporated a recognition project called
“house points” in which students can
earn points by any of the Mattawa
Elementary staff through a system
called Class Dojo.
The points awarded to all of the
students in a house are added together and the totals are displayed
for all to see on the monitors throughout our school.
The house that receives the most
points by a predetermined date will
receive a special recognition like a
field trip or celebration. Our next step
will be to invite parents to a house celebration so our families can see how much
fun we are having at ME!

Dear Key Communicators!
It’s been an HISTORIC month. We have a lot to be thankful for.
Here’s the latest.
Historic Events
Three schools were awarded the APPLE ConnectED grant this month and we are
now moving to a 1:1 environment where every student will have their own learning
device!
As I look back over our recent history, other pivotal events come to mind. Here
are a few just off the top of my head:
1. Re-configuring our four schools to reduce transitions and help overcrowding.
2. Updating our bilingual program.
3. Embracing social media and technology as a way to connect with our community and region.
4. Beginning our first year of our Mattawa Makeover project.
5. The creation of our district road-map which focuses all district and school
goals.
6. 5D & 5D+ Cel Framework is creating a common language around teaching and
learning and taking instruction to the next level across the district!
7. Providing online streaming of varsity sports and other events via www.highschoolcube.com. We will be streaming our long term facilities planning meetings
and other events as well.
8. Historic gains in math, reading, and Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives or AMAO (English language proficiency) scores because of our schools focus
on research based instruction and the frequent assessment of student mastery in
specific grade level standards.
I can go on and on! The hard work and dedication of our Wahluke staff is second
to none and I cannot thank them enough for TRULY making Wahluke one of the
best district’s in the state!

We are very proud of all our staff in Wahluke Schools! We like to highlight who
we feel have taken the district to the next level!
Cody Marlow, Athletic/Activity Director: For his outstanding work as the AD for
both the Jr. High and High School.
Steven Hilmes, HS English/LA Teacher: For his leadership of the English/Language
Arts Professional Learning Community, and his work as a classroom teacher.
Kjersti Clayton and Debbie Anderson, Morris Schott Elementary Teachers and MSE
Teachers of the Month: For going above and beyond every day for our students.
Maggie Celaya, Mattawa Elementary 1st Gr. Teacher: For being instrumental in
our ME Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and various other parent and community

hours on her beautiful mural, and for being a vital member of ME PTO.

to build great leaders/readers.
Myron Hamilton and Arthur Morken, Jr. High Gateway to Technology Teachers:
For going above and beyond and making the STEM program and VEX Robotics
programs such a successful experience for our students.

Mattawa Makeover
Supporting Our Hometown
Our community is coming together to work on the Mattawa Makeover project and
Wahluke School District is taking a lead role. We are happy to report that progress
is being made. In addition to each school adopting an area to help beautify Mattawa, there has been two murals placed along main street and we have four more
ready to be installed and displayed for all to see.
Continuing forward with this three year project will require financial support from
our community. Any help you can give us with donations for the purchase of paints
and supplies for these murals would be greatly appreciated! Businesses and individuals who donate will have their names put on the sign shown here, commemorating

Renovación De Mattawa
Apoyando a Nuestro Pueblo Natal
Nuestra comunidad se está uniendo para trabajar juntos en el proyecto Mattawa
Make Over (Renovación De Mattawa) y el Distrito Escolar Wahluke está tomando un
papel principal. Estamos felices de informar que hemos tenido progreso llevándolo
acabo. Además de que cada escuela adopto un área para ayudar a embellecer
Mattawa, ha habido dos murales colocados a lo largo de la calle principal y tenemos
cuatro más listos para ser colocados y que se mostraran para que todos lo vean.
Continuando con este proyecto de tres años se requerirá el apoyo financiero de

National Board Certified
Teachers Increase at Wahluke
Wahluke School District is pleased to recognize two teachers that have recently
earned their National Board Certificates: Aaron Moen, 6th grade teacher at Wahluke
Jr. High and Carrie Nash, 3rd grade, Mattawa Elementary.
National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) are highly accomplished educators
who meet high and rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation,
self-assessment and peer review.
National Board candidates must demonstrate their ability to improve student
learning. They essentially submit a year’s worth of evidence about their classroom
practice -- how skillful choices in instruction and assessment result in student
growth.
If a candidate successfully completes the program, they are awarded the National
Board Certificate which is an advanced teaching credential. In recognition of the
advanced credential, the Washington Legislature funds an annual salary bonus
for teachers who achieve National Board Certification.

Ha sido un mes HISTORICO. Tenemos mucho que agradecer. Esto es lo último.
Eventos Históricos
Tres escuelas recibieron un subsidio de APPLE ConnectED este mes y ahora
se estarán moviendo a una relación 1: 1 medio ambiente en el que cada alumno
tendrá su propio dispositivo de aprendizaje!
Cuando miro hacia atrás sobre nuestra historia reciente, otros acontecimientos
fundamentales vienen a la mente. Aquí ay unos cuantos de los que puedo recordar:
1. Re-configurar nuestras cuatro escuelas para reducir las transiciones y ayudar
hacinamiento.
2. Actualización de nuestro programa bilingüe.
3. Adoptar los medios sociales y la tecnología como una forma de conectar con
nuestra comunidad y región.
4. Comenzando el primer año de nuestro Proyecto-Renovación de Mattawa
(Mattawa Make-Over).
5. La creación del mapa de carretera que contiene el enfoque de todas las metas
del distrito y de la escuela.
6. El Marco 5D y 5D + Cel está creando un lenguaje común en torno a la
enseñanza y el aprendizaje y tomar la instrucción a un nivel superior en todo el
distrito.

highschoolcube.com. Estaremos transmitiendo nuestras juntas de facilidades de
planificación a largo plazo y otros eventos también.
8. Ganancias históricas en matemáticas, lectura, y Objetivos Académicos Anuales Mensurables o puntuajes de AMAO (dominio de idioma ingles), debido que
nuestras escuelas se enfocan en la instrucción basada en la investigación y la
evaluación frecuente de dominio estudiantil en las normas específicas de nivel
de grado.
Puedo seguir y seguir! El trabajo fuerte y la dedicación de nuestro personal
Wahluke es insuperable y no puedo agradecerles lo suficiente por hacer VERDADERAMENTE Wahluke uno de los mejores distritos en el estado!

Espíritu de días festivos
en Morris Schott
Amparo Ramirez de cuarto grado y la maestra de segundo grado la Sra. Clayton (maestra del mes de Noviembre) de Morris Schott, posan frente a la puerta

de días festivos están en marcha toda la semana en la Primaria Morris (MSE),
que incluye la semana de actividades de espirito navideño, concursos de puertas
decoradas, una colecta de alimentos enlatados patrocinado por el grupo de liderazgo en MSE, concierto festivo el jueves 18 de Diciembre a las 5:00pm, y el día
de artesanías festivos el Viernes, 19 de Diciembre.
Aumentan los Maestros Certificados del
Consejo Nacional en Wahluke
Distrito Escolar Wahluke se complace en reconocer dos profesores que recientemente han obtenido su Certificados del Consejo Nacional: Aarón Moen, profesora
de sexto grado en la Wahluke Jr. High y Carrie Nash, profesora del 3er grado en
la Primaria Mattawa. Los Maestros Certificados por el Consejo Nacional (NBCT)
son educadores altamente consumados que cumplen con los estándares altos y
rigurosos a través de un estudio intensivo, evaluación de expertos, la autoevaluación y la revisión de compañeros.
Candidatos del Consejo Nacional deben demostrar su capacidad para mejorar el aprendizaje de los estudiantes. Esencialmente ellos entregan evidencias
equivalente a un año de práctica de su salón de clases -- cómo las decisiones de
habilidad en la instrucción y el resultado de la evaluación en el crecimiento del
estudiante. Si un candidato termina el programa con éxito, se les otorga el Certificado del Consejo Nacional, cual es una credencial de enseñanza avanzada. En
reconocimiento de la credencial avanzada, la Legislatura de Washington otorga un
bono anual de sueldo para los maestros que obtienen la Certificación del Consejo
Nacional.

WJH Superando el promedio academico estatal
Wahluke Jr. A tenido un excelente comienzo para el año 2014-2015! Empezamos el año escolar recibiendo noticias emocionantes de OSPI que nuestros
alumnos habían superado el promedio en Evaluación del Dominio del Idioma
Ingles de Washington (WELPA) el año pasado! De hecho, ha sido la primera vez
que los estudiantes de grados 6 º, 7 º & 8 han sobre pasado el promedio del
estado. Creemos que éste es un resultado directo de nuestro enfoque de todo
el edificio en el idioma, vocabulario y estrategias de implementación en los dos
últimos años tales como:
1. L-20—20 minutos a diario de intervención de vocabulario en todo el edificio.
2. Academia de Lenguaje—a diario, intervención enfocada en el lenguaje de
Ingles.
3. Mejorando la instrucción en todo ofreciendo desarrollo profesional durante
el año escolar, tiempo de verano y los fines de semanas.
Otra área emocionante de crecimiento en Wahluke Junior High ha sido la
continuación de expansión de Profesión y Educación Técnica (CTE). Cada estudiante se introduce ahora a Horticultura, Robótica, Clase de Carpintería, Arte,
Herramientas Digitales, Banda, Educación Física / Salud como estudiante del
6to grado y después a los estudiantes se les da la oportunidad para que exploren más a fondo en la área que ellos decidan escoger durante el grado 7 y 8.
Nosotros creemos que esto está ayudando a que estén más involucrados y que
estén preparados para la preparatoria.
Finalmente, nuestra campaña Pass The Peace (Pasa La Paz) ha tenido un gran
éxito en terminar la violencia doméstica y bullying con la ayuda de Russell Wilson
el quarterback de los Seattle Seahawks! Hemos recaudado más de $1,000 para

En qué Casa pertenece usted?
El personal de Primaria de Mattawa asistió a la Academia de Ron Clark en Octubre, y desde entonces todos los estudiantes y el personal han sido ordenados
y colocados en unas de las seis “casas.” Si usted está familiarizado con las casas
muy populares de Harry Potter es la misma idea aquí en ME. Los nombres de las

solo otra forma de mejorar un sentido de unidad y trabajo en equipo, proporcionar

Además, también hemos incorporado un proyecto de reconocimiento llamado
“house points” en el cual los estudiantes pueden ganar puntos por cualquiera de
los empleados de Primaria Mattawa a través de un sistema llamado Class Dojo.
Los puntos otorgados a todos los estudiantes en una casa se suman y los totales
se muestran para que todos lo vean en los monitores a través de nuestra escuela.
La casa que recibe la mayor cantidad de puntos en una fecha predeterminada
recibirá un reconocimiento especial como una excursión o celebración. Nuestro
próximo paso será invitar a los padres a una celebración de las casas para que
nuestras familias puedan ver la diversión que estamos teniendo en Primaria Mattawa (ME)!!! VAMOS ENJOUEE!!!!

Wahluke High School Recognizing
Excellence
Mattawa Elementary and Wahluke Jr. High schools exceeded state targets for
students attaining English language proficiency and transitioning out of the English
language development program last school year. Wahuke Jr. High doubled the state
target percentage for the number of students transitioning out of the program, and
for the first time in six years each grade level, 6th – 8th, beat the state average in
the student transition rate. Superintendent Aaron Chavez said “Great work goes
on everyday here at Wahluke and having our students gain proficiency in English
helps to prepare them for success in all areas.”
La escuela Primaria Mattawa y Wahluke Jr. High superaron las metas estatales
para los estudiantes que alcanzan el dominio del idioma Inglés y terminaron con el
programa el pasado año escolar. Wahluke Jr. High duplicó el porcentaje de meta
estatal por el número de estudiantes que están en transición para salir del programa, y por primera vez en seis años cada nivel de grado, sexto a octavo, superó
