In addition to being persecuted, they never gave up because Christ was already in their heart and lips. Because of Christ many became martyrs like St. Peter and St. Paul. From St. Peter and St. Paul’s time until today, we continue to hear about Christian persecution as it occurs in the Middle East and so on. This leads us to Jesus’ question, “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” We are called to be aware of this world that we live in including the ongoing battle between good and bad; between those who accept and testify Jesus Christ and those who choose to deny Him. Through this ongoing battle, Jesus reminds us that division is there especially when there is resistance including reticence to believe and embrace love, mercy and forgiveness that Christ offers humanity. Therefore, can we stop being lovely, merciful, and forgiving Christians? These are Christian values; these may create division among believers and non believers and lead to persecution, but we cannot stop being who we are, “Christians.” As the Letter to the Hebrews inspires us, we cannot stop praying for peace and unity, and keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. May we continue to pray for those who encounter division and persecution because of Christ and for those who continue to proclaim Christ in today’s world. JOAN OF ARC • AUGUST 14 PASTOR’S MESSAGE WHO ARE ALL THESE NEW PEOPLE WORKING AT SAINT JOAN OF ARC As a normal part of life, any organization, even a church sees changes occur in our staffing due to retirement, job changes or re-location. During the summer we have seen some of these changes and consequently are welcoming new members of our parish work family. As far as our priest personnel is concerned we experienced Father Tom Lafreniere’s transfer to his first pastorate and the assignment of Father Dominic Toan-Tran as our new parochial vicar. We also have a new Director of Parish Ministries and Activities, Andrea Lewin, who in addition to being the contact person for family focused activities coordinates many of the other spiritual and social organizations and activities that are a part of our ever active parish community life. She will work very closely with Constanza Preble of Multi-Cultural ministries and activities and Rosario Gonzales of our Marriage Preparation and mentoring programs. We will also have a new face in our C.C.D. office with the addition of Ailen Ponce as the Administrative Assistant to Rosa Davidson, our recently appointed Parish Catechetical Leader. In order to help strengthen our Youth Ministry efforts, a FAU student, Michael Piranio, will assist Cecilia Chinchilla. Finally, our maintenance and physical plant crew will welcome Richard Davis and Timothy Gozza filling empty positions in that important area of our church life. It is worth noting that church employment is in many ways different than working for a for-profit business or industry. We are held to the same performance and excellence standards as other work possibilities, but because we are a true charity, we cannot always pay a competitive salary. There typically is a dimension of sacrifice involved in working in church ministry. Since our “CEO” is in heaven, we hope, however, that quite literally our reward will have to be in heaven. We also are committed to sharing the work load across position boundaries and have to really “multi-task” everyday. It is very important for us to get to know as many of our parishioners as is humanly possible and be present to them throughout the joys and challenges of life. Ministry is more than a job but it truly is a “vocation” that calls for self-sacrifice and self-giving on behalf of parishioners, our big spiritual family. As the Pastor, I have a strong commitment to teamwork, visioning, planning, efficiency, spiritual development and mutual respect. Every church worker’s contribution at St. Joan of Arc has great value and together we try to form a team that makes a difference within and beyond our parish boundaries. The spiritual, human and social development of all of our parishioners is our unifying vision and we try to help in any way that a church community can to further the happiness and fulfillment of all (here and in eternal life). Our whole church team would like to thank our parishioners who support our efforts financially and through volunteering. As a true charity we depend upon you for our success. We are all in this marvelous and mysterious work of the Lord together and form Saint Paul’s strong “Body of Christ.” May we continue to journey together along the holy pathways of the Lord as we build up the Kingdom of God in our day. Below are some pictures and messages from our new parish team members. Please give a warm word of welcome to them as you encounter them on our campus. - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw WE ASKED OUR NEW STAFF, “WHY DO YOU LIKE TO WORK AT SAINT JOAN OF ARC?” FATHER DOMINIC TOAN-TRAN “For the Grace of God!” ANDREA LEWIN “Serving the Lord and being his instrument to share the Good News in our community” AILEN PONCE “The parish has shown me what a loving community it is and I love the welcoming environment here at St. Joan of Arc.” ROSA DAVIDSON “It is a blessing and to work with such a wonderful staff, and with our volunteers. I enjoy serving the Religious Education families and seeing the children grow in their faith.” RICHARD DAVIS “A step closer to grace.” TIMOTHY GOZZA “It lifts my spirits to serve the Lord” AUGUST 14 • ST. Participating in the life of your church is just like being a part of a family, and it is an important roll to play in the strength of your parish and your faith. As Catholics we are called to get involved in the work of the Church through the use of our time, talent and treasure. One way to show our thanks to God through time, talent and treasure is with the weekly offertory collection. With this treasure we are able to show our appreciate to God for His many blessings by continuing His works through the Church. In addition to this treasure, we should be properly registered on the parish roster, regularly attend mass on Sundays and holy days, participate in parish activities and ministries, and use the parish envelope system for donations. All of these lends time to the church, which continues to further the Catholic faith and strengthen our bond with God and our fellow Catholics. The time, talent and treasure of active members makes possible the many ministries that touch the lives of fellow parishioners as well as those members of the community in need. The treasures specifically provided through the offertory helps pay the overhead expenses of the Church such as electric bill, water bill, maintenance, salaries and other operating expenses of the Church. • • • • • • • • Preparing our children for Baptism; Educating our children in our Catholic faith; Preparing couples for marriage; Teaching adults about our Catholic faith and preparing them for membership; Helping our adults find a deeper relationship with God; Assisting people in financial distress with bills and food; Offering a youth ministry for our high school aged children to explore their faith among their peers; Offering a men’s ministry; • • • • • • • • • Offering social ministries for various age groups; Welcoming new comers; Helping the bereaved; Counseling those in need; Offering short term relief for care givers; Ministering to the homebound; Ministering to the sick and hospitalized; Ministering to those with alcohol and drug problems; and Helping support a day care for the elderly. All of this is a sampling of the many ways the offertory reaches out to spread God’s love through our time, talent and treasure. Won’t you help us make a difference in someone’s life? Support your church through an offertory treasure, give of your time and talent, and really make an impact on the life of your parish, your fellow Catholics, and those in the community around you. “We make a living by what we get.
