Teach us to number our days aright, that we
may gain wisdom of heart.
-- Psalm 90:12

PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH
07/31/2016
From the desk of Father Philip
I t is important in our Catholic Spiritual Tradition that we always love Jesus above all things. The Lord wants us to be
brave and wise in our loving Him. If on account of slight difficulty we give up what we have undertaken and eagerly turn elsewhere to seek consolation, it is sign that we are lacking in these qualities of loving Jesus. The brave lover stands firm in temptations and pays no heed to the crafty persuasions of the enemy. The wise lover regards the affection of the Giver rather than the
value of the gift. He sets his beloved above all gifts. Our hearts will rest in Him who is above every gift. This is what we call focus
on the Lord.
There are times we feel less devout to the Lord than we wish. Sometimes we have a sweet feeling in our devotion to
the Lord which does not last too long. That is the effect of present grace and certain foretaste of the heavenly home. We should
not lean on it too much because it comes and goes. To fight against evil thoughts which attack us is a sign of virtue and great
merit. Always we must hold strongly to our resolution and keep a right intention toward God.
Sometimes we find rapt in ecstasy then quickly returned to the usual follies of the heart. These are evils we suffer
rather than commit. With a dislike we must struggle against them which becomes a matter of merit not a loss. We must remember that the old enemy will try by all means in his power to hinder our desire for good, to turn us from every devotional practice.
Veneration to the saints, meditation on the passion of Jesus, and a firm purpose of advancing in virtue are devil’s target of attack.
He will suggest evil thoughts and try to draw us away from prayer and holy reading. He will discourage you from a humble
confession and will try to make you omit Holy Communion.
When such things happen, we must immediately renounce devil and his tricks. We must openly claim Jesus as our
strength. Think, feel and say loudly that we will not consent to the tricks of the devil. This is the time to pray, “ the Lord is my
light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Though armies unite against me my heart will not fear, for the Lord is my Helper and
my Redeemer” . In our spiritual warfare we must fight like a good soldier. When we fail and fall, trusting in the grace of God, rise
up quickly with greater strength than before. At the same time we must guard against the vain complacency and pride. Never try
to rely on self. With a genuine humility, hold on to the Lord with intense love for Him.
We must educate our children at a very young age how to develop this spiritual journey as an important part of their
faith life. They should be guided to grow in their love for Jesus. They should recognize the enticing tricks of the devil in the world
and know how to defeat him with their devotion to Jesus and through the intercession of His saints.
God bless you all.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Don’t tell me that Sometimes the treasures of art can
provide us with clues about traditions. Take, for example,
the miter, the conical hat with lappets, or back-flaps that fall
to the shoulders. This cap is worn by bishops in the Catholic West. Eastern Catholics favor a crown, but we have this
curious headpiece. In Greek, the word means “turban.” Old
paintings and mosaics provide clues about headgear for
bishops, and there is very little artistic evidence for the miter before the year 1000. Before then, some kind of head
covering might have been worn to offset the damp and chill
of unheated churches. The pope, as far back as the seventh century, often wore a cap called a camelaucum.
Around that time, artists painting St. Peter began to portray
their subject wearing this hat. By the year 1000 or so, the
pope began to grant similar helmet-shaped headgear as
gifts to visiting abbots and bishops. They returned home
with these new chapeaus, and before long everybody wanted one!
Today, miters are granted not only to bishops, but to
certain favored abbots and occasionally abbesses. Pope
Benedict XVI set aside the tradition of the papal tiara in favor of the miter, even on his coat of arms. Pope Paul VI
was the last pope to have a coronation. As recently as the
1960s, miters were towering skyscrapers of jewels and rich
silks, but now a simplicity of style is favored by bishops.
Miters are here to stay, and experienced altar servers know
how to await the bishop’s removing of the miter, since he
does not wear it when he is saying the presidential prayers
or the Eucharistic Prayer.

¿A quién temeré?

muelle, comiendo, bebiendo y gozando.
No adquiriremos
