The Brits are in the house during June for British culture
week (June 1-8). Highlights include the opening of
Blue/Orange, a play produced by Peña Meisner and directed
by Stephen Bayly, a friendly UK vs Cuba football match and a
screening of Carlos Acosta's recent movie Day of the
Flowers. Really though, it is all about the parties which start
on June 1 in El Morro with an electronic music mega-concert
featuring Djoy de Cuba, and finish at Salón Rosado at La
Tropical on June 8, for the Tremendonga Party hosted by
Qva Libre. In between roving secret parties will take place at
locations to be announced. Rule, Britania!
Elsewhere there is everything you could want from a packed
classical musical program to performances by Cuba's best
tres musician (Pancho Amat), plenty of electronic dance
parties, a rock music festival and even a Hemmingway
colliquim. If you like modern dance, try and make it for
Showroom on June 2. For the more traditional the Ballet
Nacional de Cuba presents Shakespeare y sus mascaras on
June 7-8.

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is celebrating its
100th birthday with two exhibitions related to the
anniversary: El Museo Nacional de Cuba. Orígenes
de la colección, refers to the museum's first
exhibition in 1913 and shows pieces from its present
collections and others which later became part of
the collections of other Havana museums. Hitos.
Crecimiento de la colección de arte en el Museo
Nacional (1913-1963) includes significant instances in
the museum's life, such as the loan of artwork by the
San Alejandro Art Academy in 1913, the purchase of
pieces from the Italian collector Salvatore Buffardi in
1925, and the legacy of Rafael Carvajal in 1954.

Born in Havana in 1985, Mauricio Abad is part of the new
generation of Cuban artists attracted to the use of new
technologies in their works. While cars from the 1950s
and even horse carts still ply the streets of Cuba,
technology –especially in the form of cell phones and the
internet –continues to gain ground. Nowhere is the
burgeoning usage of technology more apparent than in
the art of Abad who has lucidly engaged with this
medium in the uniquely peculiar Cuban context...

The Oscar-winning documentary Searching for
Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of
Rodriguez, the greatest '70s rock icon who never
was. Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late '60s by
two celebrated producers struck by his soulful
melodies and prophetic lyrics, they recorded an
albumwhich they believed would secure his
reputation as the greatest recording artist of his
generation. In fact, the album bombed and the
singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of
a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg
recording found its way into apartheid South
Africa and, over the next two decades, he became
a phenomenon.
'Day of the Flowers is a Cuba-set comedy drama
about two Glaswegian sisters hoping to lay their
former militant socialist father's ashes to rest in
the Central American state – hopefully in time for
the festival of the title. At first glance, the film
might seem formulaic, most of its comedy coming
from throwing together two people who are polar
opposites – one a dour, self-important socialist
and the other a shallow, girly fashionista However,
underneath this premise is a good story well told,
featuring some excellent cinematography and
music, as well as possessing some intelligent,
thought-provoking undertones.”
The film follows the story of two South African fans
who set out to find out what really happened to
their hero. Their investigation leads them to a
story more extraordinary than any of the existing
myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.

Alfonso, is a technically and conceptually complex
choreography with few dancers on stage and a
preference for improvisation, appropriate
lighting, attractive and functional wardrobe, and X
Alfonso's music, which practically becomes the
protagonist of the piece given its excellence, both
in the stylization of different genres of Cuban
popular music and its perfect balance with the
dance per se.
DANZA CONTEMPORANEA DE CUBA’S BEAUTIFUL COMPÁS

The persistent rain and the Cuban “winter” were of little matter to those who filled the Mella Theater during the
first weekend of March, 2013, to attend the rerun of one of Danza Contemporánea’s most liked works. And there
was no shortage of reasons. The first one: the undisputed values of Compás, especially created by the Dutch
choreographer Jan Linkens and written by his fellow countryman Marc Jonkers for the Cuban company. The
second reason: more than a rerun, it was a revival, for only four of the original thirty dancers of its premiere in
2003 intervened now. The third reason: it is an all-night show, which departs from the usual concert programs,
but that the public is always grateful for.
Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, directed by Miguel Iglesias and one of the most solid dance companies in
Cuba—and I dare say in the international dance scene—did not disappoint the audience. The young dancers
undertook the challenge posed by the choreographer with joy, energy and virtuosity.

The Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba hosts the weekly Sábado de la Rumba, a mesmerizing show of AfroCuban religious and secular dance and drumming at El Gran Palenque in Vedado. Here on a Saturday afternoon,
there is three hours of rumba, guaguancó and yambú to get you moving. Unless you are 100% “patón” (literally
having large feet, but really meaning stiff), it is virtually impossible to stop your body from beginning to sway and
your feet moving to the rhythm of the congas. Although on the tourist map this remains refreshingly a-loCubano.
The term “palenque” means “palisade for the defense of a post or for enclosing a plot of land where a public
festivity is to be held.” The word was used by runaway slaves in colonial Cuba to designate a place in the
mountains where they created a kind of village that kept them safe from the cruel punishments of their masters.
Freed from the potential danger of dying at the stocks, they were given the opportunity of practicing the culture
and religions they brought with them from their African homeland. It’s not down to chance then that the
courtyard attached to the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional’s home, located at 5th and Calzada streets in the
Vedado district in Havana, is named El Palenque, given that African music and rituals, play the leading role.
Arguably, the most popular and anticipated event at El Palenque is Saturday’s Sábado de la Rumba, where the
drums beat continuously from 3 to 6 in the afternoon. It’s three full hours of rumba (not the ballroom dance, mind
you!) guaguancó and yambú. Quickly, the atmosphere is energized and you feel your blood rushing through your
veins and your heart racing. Inadvertently, your body begins to sway and your feet move to the rhythm of the
congas. There’s no age limit here and the dance floor is open to all. Visitors, whether from the island or from
overseas, who are introduced for the first time to Afro-Cuban rhythms are guided by members of the dance
company. Passersby can’t avoid the noise coming from inside and, out of curiosity, come into El Palenque,
unaware that they will probably stay until the end and most likely come back for more!

PROYECTO ANALÓGICA - NO SALSA PLEASE, THIS IS A DANCE PARTY

If you think that young Cubans are all listening to an old guy playing a guitar or dancing salsa to Los Van Van,
you may want to think again. The electronic dance scene is very much alive and kicking with energy
reminiscent of the United Kingdom in the 1980s when the youth were chasing the latest rave party around the
M25. With a loyal following across Cuba, Djoy de Cuba and Kike Wolf recently (April 28, 2013) hosted the
Electronic Music Festival at the Abreu Fontán Social Center. Over twenty Cuban DJs joined them in the
festival, which showcased the various styles of electronic music made on the island in a party that lasted for
twelve straight hours. The festival was organized by Proyecto Analógica, a group that seeks a professional
exchange among DJ's of every generation to encourage creative and quality music. Participating DJs
included the ever-popular Wichy de Vedado, Eddy Gt, Iván Lejardi, and Xander Black, but the highlight of the
festival was the performance of GBass Beat (Bjoyce, Paula and Sahria), the first female DJs in Cuba's
electronic music scene.
If you missed the last electronic music festival, don't worry: on Sunday June 2, 2013, Proyecto Analógica is
hosting another party at El Castillito. Bring a bathing suit, it's bound to be a party that you are not likely to
forget.

In some ways Pancho Amat is an unlikely hero. He is
a spontaneous and unaffected man who conveys
wisdom in an open and frank manner. A guajiro in
the best sense of the word. His great love is the
Cuban Tres, which is part of Cuba’s most
important musical heritage. Over the course of

contributed to universalize the tres through

CARLOS DÍAZ, DIRECTOR OF TEATRO EL PÚBLICO : UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

Carlos Díaz, the renowned director of the Teatro El Público theater company wanted to be an actor since he
was a child. He did not find the theater—he was born with it. Back in his school days, when he interpreted small
roles in school plays, he was already aware of the need for order in a scene and for each element to be in the
right place at the right time. So his journey into stage direction was quite smooth. The first group he founded
was Teatro Ensayo de Bejucal, which gave him the opportunity to experiment and begin to explore the path
that his future company would travel. He studied theater at the University of the Arts (ISA) because he
positively knew he wanted to direct, but it was a time when there was no academic training for directors in
Cuba.
After graduation, he worked as theater consultant and assistant director with Roberto Blanco for Teatro
Irrumpe where he had the opportunity to do everything but direct. From 1988 to 1990, he was artistic director
and general consultant for Ballet Teatro de La Habana. In 1989, the director of the National Theatre, Pedro
Renteria, gave him the chance to direct, provided he produced three plays in a year. His first three
productions, A Streetcar Named Desire, Tea and Sympathy and Glass Menagerie. were billed as North
American Theatre Trilogy. This was the origin of what would one day become Teatro El Público.
Carlos has readily agreed to this interview. Unassuming, calm, friendly, he meets us at the Trianón Theater,
which has been home to the company since the 1990s. He tells us that during the early years of the Special
Period, the Trianón, a former movie house, became the National Symphony Orchestra’s headquarter for a
brief period. One day, Carlos was passing by the Trianon and said to himself, “This cinema is going to be mine
and it will be a theater.” His dream came true, though not without some effort.

BLUE/ORANGE, the award-winning play by British
playwright Joe Penhall, will be presented in Havana,
Cuba, in Spanish at the Teatro Bertold Brecht from 6
June, 2013.
There are two casts, one male, one female, playing on
alternative nights. Cast members are: (men) Ernesto del
Cañal, Hector Noas, and Yarlo Ruiz; (women) Idalmis
García, Maridelmis Marín, and Yeni Soria.
The play is the latest to follow the tradition of European
support for Cuban theatre, and one of the few
contemporary British plays to be produced here. It is
being supported by the Norwegian Embassy and the
British Embassy (via the Semana Británica), several
European sponsors, including a number of British writers,
directors, and producers, as well as local businesses.
The Spanish translation is by screenwriter Julio Carillo.
The set and costumes by Cuba's top stage designer, Alain
Ortiz.
Blue/Orange will be directed by British director
Stephen Bayly with actors from the La Peña Meisner de la
Habana (The Meisner* Gang) – all professionals trained
by Stephen, dedicated to the proposition of presenting
realistic contemporary theatre to a Cuban public.
The play is fast-paced, smartly written, with brilliant
flashes of comedy, and absorbing subject matter,
revolving around a power-play between a senior
psychiatrist, his junior doctor, and a schizophrenic black
patient. It is a powerful critique of self-advancement,
institutionalised racism, and bureaucracy.

Blue/Orange is a coproduction between the Escuela
Internacional de Cine y Televisión, and the Counsel of
Scenic Arts, and is being presented by Teatro el Público.
Blue/Orange opens on Thursday 6 June at the Teatro
Bertold Brecht, 8:30 p.m. and will run at weekends
through June 2013.

takes place at the former house of Ernest
Hemingway in Havana.
Hemingway not only
resided here for 21 years, but this is where he also
wrote one of his most famous novels: The Old Man
and the Sea. This colloquium will discuss numerous
topics, including how Hemingway's love for Cuba is
mirrored in his life and work, the author's social
relationships, and the continuing work of
Hemingway associations and institutions
worldwide in preserving and promoting his legacy.
Events include a meeting of Hemingway
organizations; the stage production of La Habana
cálida de Hemingway, a one-man play with
Canadian actor Brian Gordon Sinclair; and the
exhibition Los autos clásicos de Ernest Hemingway
at Room 511 of the Ambos Mundos Hotel, where it is
said the “Bronze God” of American literature wrote
much of For Whom the Bells Tolls.

Museo Nacional de la Cerámica
Contemporánea Cubana
This Ceramics Biennial, which has been in existence
since 1989, became a regular event in 1991 with the
creation of the Museo Nacional de la Cerámica
Contemporánea Cubana. This event has revitalized
interest in this art by exploring the diversity of
techniques, themes and aesthetics in making
ceramics. In addition to the annual competition
and artist exhibitions, this year's event will focus on
utilitarian and ornamental ceramic vessels.
CUBA TRASATLÁNTICA
June 10-12
Palacio de Convenciones, Havana
This event provides an academic space for
reflection and debate on both Cuban literature and
the cultural history and policies of Cuba. It will
examine a plethora of traditional topics including
gender, transatlantic colonization, ethnic
influences, and the formation of religious beliefs as
well as more modern themes such as tourism in
Cuba, US-Cuban relationships, and the new modes
of digital art.
TALLER CORAL INTERNACIONAL
June 30 –July 6
Havana
Sponsored by the Corhabana International Choral
Festival, this is the first international workshop on
the interpretation of Cuban music. Participants will
include amateur and professional choir directors
and music teachers. Alongside lectures and master
classes, Cuban choirs will perform in the famous
concert halls of Havana's Historical Center. There
will even be a concert during the closing ceremony
to highlight the technical and artistic results of the
participants in the workshops.

In commemoration of the most important Cuban
decimista (country-ballad poet) of the nineteenth
century, the city of Las Tunas is hosting a festival to
celebrate the life and writings of Juan Cristóbal
Nápoles Fajardo (El Cucalambé). This event will
include a gathering of musicians, poets, repentistas
(improvisers), and folklorists whose work will focus
on the décima, a Spanish stanza of ten octosyllabic
lines, created by the Spaniard Vicente Martínez
Espinel (1551-1634).

Held for the first time in 2006, this year's rendition
of the Week of Contemporary Art includes an
exhibition salon that will hold a competition of
essays on contemporary art, a media room
dedicated to new mediums in art, such as video-art,
net-art, and electronic music as well as a public arts
arena for performances.
ATENAS ROCK

Campismo Canimar Arriba, Matanzas
For all Cuba´s deep and long–lived cultural
connection with the US, its pretty interesting that
one of the latter´s great musical genres–rock 'n
roll–hasn´t really developed on the island as one
might have expected. During the early 60´s and 70´s,
rock was not well–supported on the island but in the
more open 80´s, rock groups began to form, very
influenced by heavy metal, trash and grunge, and by
bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple.
The Atenas Rock festival brings together rock bands
from across Cuba in the city of Matanzas. This year's
festival hopes to promote rock music and create a
special place for rock lovers on the island.

Cucalambeana Country Fair
at El Cornito, Las Tunas

Every year, the capital of the northeastern
province of Las Tunas becomes the venue for the
Jornada Cucalambeana in memory of Las Tunasborn poet Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo (aka El
Cucalambé), the most important Cuban
decimista, country ballad poet, in nineteenthcentury Cuba.
A trip to the Cucalambeana Country Fair takes you
a long way off of the regular tourist trail, but it
gives you a unique opportunity to see real Cuban
country folk. Whether you like the cock-fighting or
not, you have to admit that it plays an undeniable
role in countryside culture and history of Cuba.
And that is what the festival isa ll about: keeping
alive the music and traditions of the Cuban
countryside.
The event lasts five days, beginning in late June to
incorporate July 1, the birthdate of El Cucalambé.
It is always held in El Cornito, the home of the poet
that now serves as a hotel on the outskirts of Las
Tunas. A scenic area, there are several sculptures
dedicated to El Cucalambé, an open area for
horseback riding, children's playgrounds, and
several small plazas.

The actual Cucalambeana itself includes the
recital and singing of décimas, a Spanish stanza of
ten octosyllabic lines created in early-modern
Spain and adopted by the country folk of the
Americas. Repentistas, or improvisers, come from
all over the country to show their talent at this
difficult art at the Justo Vega Competition while
children showcase their talent at the Colorín.
There are also traditional country dances, which
takes place at El Cornito's plazas. These dances
have a twist: they are competitions between two
teams: the Blue team and the Red team. In fact, all
of the activities held during the festival are
competitions between the Red and Blue teams, so
don't be surprised to see competitors wearing
costumes, hats and kerchiefs in one of these two
colors.
If cock-fighting and dancing aren't enough for
you, why not join the audience at the popular
improvisation event where you can contribute to
the poets' décimas by giving them pie forzados,
phrases prompted by anyone present that the
poets must follow in order to create their poem.
Experts agree that repentismo, or the
improvisation of décimas, requires great talent
and quick thinking nurtured from the cradle.

6pm is Sloppy Joe cocktail hour again at the
original Sloppy Joe's saloon, an iconic Cuban
bar that reopened Friday April 12, 2013 after
a nearly 50-year break in its original
location. The restoration, undertaken by the
office of the Historian of Havana, began in
2007 has sought to restore the dilapidated
building as faithfully as possible, from the
outside façade down to the delicate plaster
molding, dark wood paneling and colorful
bottles of alcohol displayed behind glass.
Parts of the dark mahogany bar, once
reputedly the longest in Latin America at
about 59 feet (18 meters) have even been
preserved and restored to splendor.
Try the Sloppy Joe sandwich mixed down
with a daiquiri or two. Excellent, good
service. This has seems to be the flagship bar
for Habaguanex who have done a great job
here.

Atelier keeps getting better, recent
renovations have improved the place while
the food remains excellent.
Atelier is run by Niuris Higueras who has a
passion for creating food. She is the driving
force-modest, capable, and warm. She
defines the style of the food as signature
cuisine, an experimental culinary workshop.
The food changes every day, every week,
hence those handwritten menu. Eclectic,
everything from Falafels, Pato confitado
[candied duck], Lomito de res con
camarones y Espuma de apio al olivo [sirloin
steak with shrimp and celery mousse],
Conejo al vino [rabbit in wine] to cerdo
asado (roast pork). Desserts are standard
(flan, tarts, ice cream) but good.

Elena's up and downs
to dining out in Havana

It doesn't take much to get an “up” in my list. Friendly service will always win my heart, good food helps and a
nice ambience rounds out a simple list. To stand out though, in this increasingly competitive market I would
also suggest to be original watch the prices - this is not yet New York and sometimes it is the little details which
count, whether this may be a bathroom lock or a new pepper grinder.
DOWNS:
Prices at La Moneda Cubana

This is what I would describe as an O.K. paladar. The
food is far from outstanding and the pirate
costumes of the waiters leave make it seem too
much like a tourist theme park. Nevertheless,
situated in the heart of Old Havana the views from
the terrace are spectacular encompassing a wide
sweep of the city and the bay which make up for it, at
least until you see the prices on the menu! Up to 18
cucs for a seafood entrée that it is not spectacular
seems like gauging to me and is likely to send people
who know a block over to the very cute Doña
Eutimia.
Bathrooms (yes, bathrooms!) in many paladares
Whole books have been written about the state of Cuban bathrooms – the omnipresent toilet attendant who
wants her 25 cents – the lack of toilet paper – the lack of water and so on…It has been a real downer for many
tourists unaccustomed to basic conditions. In general the new private restaurants get it and you would hope
the whole issue fades away. Not quite yet though - among the bad bathrooms I have found lately are the non
existent toilet seats at Bar Bohemio and Partenon, no running water at Bollywood, dirty floors and broken
faucet at Dr. Café, extremely small space at Ivan Justo and a faulty lock at La Comercial San Cristobal (where in
my last visit I end up locked up in the bathroom for 10 minutes until a waiter heard my cries for help.) Really, it
could not be that hard to maintain a nice bathroom and it will contribute greatly to an overall positive
experience, as it is with Rio Mar, La Guarida and Le Chansonnier (among others).

Ambience at Segundo Piso

This paladar is located across the street from the Copacabana Hotel in the second floor of a residential
building. The prices are affordable, the menu is pretty unpredictable (pizzas, grilled pork, fish, beans…) but the
place itself totally lacks of any soul or personality. With the current boom of paladares in Havana (and all Cuba)
restaurants have to put attention in every detail, including the interior design. Some wooden chairs and bare
walls with some Christmas lights won't work unless your food is outstanding, as in the case of Dr. Café.
UPS:
The “leche frita” at La Campana

This has to be one off the best desserts in the city
(maybe in the island). It is a rendition of the classic
Spanish sweet delicacy made from a sweet milk
pudding deep-fried to form a perfect crispy crust
dusted with cinnamon. Neither too sweet nor too
rich or too much it is just great! La Campana also
offers a great variety of grilled food and wines at a
good price in a family friendly environment. The
only down of this place is its location, it is out in the
Western suburbs (at La Lisa just behind El Pedregal),
nevertheless the Leche Frita is worth the trip and if
you have the energy they have some great parties at
the weekend.

Last time I was in this tapas bar I was joined by at
least 30 friends. There was only one waiter that
managed to keep track of individual tags and
learned almost all our names. Not only that, he was
able to serve the drinks fast and always with a smile.
The only “down” that I will point out in this place is
the lack of fans in its very beautiful terrace. Some
kind of air circulation system will be much needed
especially in the months to come. Other than that,
the place is pretty, the service is great and I can't
wait to be back.

I know I have said before in this column that a big “down” in Mi Jardín is that it can take a long time for your food
and drinks to arrive to the table, in other words service tends to be slow. However, the food is pretty good. It
may not be completely Mexican or may not be the best example of the Mexican cuisine (and believe me, I know
about it), but the Mexican Platter (plato mexicano) is a good and unpretentious sampler of typical Mexican food.
You will get a crispy taco, a tostada, a quesadilla and a sope. The base of all of those delicacies is corn tortilla,
some beans, chicken, cheese and hot pepper. Enjoy the beautiful garden and have a margarita along with your
food, it is the best in town.

The open space at La Moraleja

This paladar located in Vedado has a couple of
problems: it tends to be pricey and the service is
inconsistent (sometimes efficient and friendly, and
at other times slow and grumpy). Nevertheless the
food is consistently good, with a variety of grilled
meats, vegetables, and seafood. But the most
attractive part of La Moraleja, in my view, is its open
space filled with elegantly displayed tables, subtle
lighting at night, and a big trellis that provides shade
during the day and that is covered with a beautiful
vine of purple flowers. That space alone makes me
what to come back.

I can't think of anything I don't like about this
paladar (other than the bathroom lock). The place is
beautiful, the location is great, the food is fantastic,
the service is friendly and the prices are not too bad
for what you get. I have previously mentioned the
delicious oxtail, but my other favorite in this place is
the appetizer platter (called Las Mercedes). This is
basically a sampler of the many appetizers of the
house: Spanish tortilla, caramelized eggplant, garlic
octopus, deep fried fish, variety of cheeses, malanga
fritters, smoked salmon and ceviche are among the
samples served in the platter. One of these long with
a bottle of wine and you are set for a delicious light
dinner…
