A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

THE MISSAL IS COMING! THE MISSAL IS COMING! THE MISSAL IS COMING!
(AND SO IS BISHOP MURPHY)
The Roman Missal, otherwise known by Altar Servers as the Sacramentary (or “the big book” or “the little book”)
is “the” book that directs the way we worship at Mass. There-in is contained the words and actions of both the
Priest and the Assembly. After many years of ora et labora (prayer and work), a more faithful English translation
of the Roman Missal has been prepared and is now ready to be universally implemented (put into practice) on the
First Sunday of Advent, 27 November 2011.
PREPARE TO IMPLEMENT
(taken from the Parish Guide to Implementing the Roman Missal (USCC))
“Preparing for the Roman Missal is not simply a matter of buying new books and learning to recite and sing
revised texts. It is an opportunity to examine and renew our celebration and understanding of the Eucharistic
Liturgy that stands at the heart of Christian life.
The revised translation of the Liturgy will deepen faith by using words and images that draw on the Church’s rich
theological Tradition. It will nurture Christian hope for the day when we may celebrate the Wedding Feast of the
Lamb at the Table of the Lord in Heaven. It will celebrate the boundless Love of God, shown most profoundly in
the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ, celebrated and made Present in the Eucharistic Liturgy.
This period of implementation offers an opportunity to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the Liturgy,
nurture liturgical practices that will lead to fuller liturgical participation, and celebrate the Liturgy with renewed
purpose.
Implementing the revised text is not a rejection of the last forty years (or four hundred years) of Liturgical
practice. It is an opportunity for deeper understanding, greater attention to words and gestures, and more
intentional participation. The renewed Liturgy will help form disciples who live in communion with God and each
other – disciples who live a Christian life.
It will not be enough for the Priests to practice the revised texts and the choir to learn revised musical settings.
Every (emphasis added) member of the parish should understand not only the content of the changes (the revised
prayer texts) but also the reason underlying these changes.”
It is with that in mind that I am happy to announce: beginning this September, a free course on the Roman Missal
and the Mass will be offered here at Our Holy Redeemer. (Please keep tuned in to the Sunday bulletin for details.)
This course will help us to ensure that the goal stated by the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council - “full,
conscious, and active participation” of all the faithful in the Liturgical Action - will be realized; not only in time for
the First Sunday of Advent, but also in time when Bishop Murphy comes home to Our Holy Redeemer (on 10 June
2012) where coming home is what it’s all about!
Scripture Reflection
“But who do you say that I
am?” (See Matthew 16:13-20).
These words addressed to
the original disciples by
Jesus Himself are also
addressed to each one of
us. There is no alternative.
Jesus asks all of us, “who
do you say that I am?” It is
not a matter of answering
with words, although at times that may be
necessary. It is a matter of answering with our
own very lives. Yes, by the way we live people
ought to be able to say: “Jesus is His Lord,” or
“Jesus is Her Lord.” St. Peter gave the perfect
answer, given to him by God Himself. Because of
that, he was entrusted with the Keys of the
Kingdom and even up to our day, as far as we
Catholics are concerned, where St. Peter is there is
also the Church. We need to remember that God
gave this perfect answer to St. Peter. As Jesus
says, “flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,
but my heavenly Father.” So, it is with us. If we
want to answer Jesus’ question, we need the help
of the Holy Spirit. We need to entrust our lives to
the intercession of Mary. God entrusted to Mary
the life of His Son. We will do well in entrusting
to her our response to this vital question, “who do
you say that I am?”

got from Human Services Director Mr.
Alfonso Martinez when inquiring about
September’s First Sunday Works of Mercy.
If anything speaks to the difficult times we are
in Alfonso’s response certainly does.
I cannot thank God enough for the gift of
Alfonso, and the growing (thanks be to God)
number of volunteers who take “everything
and anything” we offer, and patiently give it
away to people who really need it! And I
cannot thank God enough for the gift of each
(and every) one of you who offer “everything
and anything” (the food, the drink, the
clothing, the money, the time) to Parish
Human Services. You continue to show the
world that everything and anything is possible
with God! (cf. Saint Luke I:37).

UN MENSAJE DEL PASTOR

En tres de los cinco domingos del mes de julio oímos a Jesús hablar del Reino de los Cielos. Espero
que hayan tomado tiempo adicional para orar acerca de lo que oyeron. Yo lo hice y mientras oraba
recordé la siguiente fábula acerca de un rey y un reino que me contó uno de los parroquianos.
Una Parábola Cuento de Hadas
Había una vez un rey que gobernaba a un pueblo de gente buena y maravillosa, pero que sin
embargo, se quejaban mucho acerca del reino y unos con otros. El rey sabía que él tenía que hacer
algo para rectificar la situación y finalmente se le ocurrió un plan. Hizo una proclamación para que
todos sus súbditos se reunieran en la plaza del pueblo al día siguiente. Cuando llegaron él llamó a
dos de sus pajes fieles.
Al primer paje le dijo: “Quiero que pases las siguientes seis semanas viajando por
todo mi reino y recogiendo toda las cosas horribles, viles, y asquerosas que puedas
hallar. Por favor tráeme todas las cosas que sean asquerosas, podridas, mezquinas y
sucias.”
Al segundo paje le dijo: “Quiero que pases las siguientes seis semanas viajando por
todo mi reino y recogiendo todas las cosas hermosas, transcendentes y
resplandecientes que puedas hallar. Por favor tráeme todas las cosas sublimes,
fragantes, brillantes que puedas hallar.”
A sus súbditos les dijo: “Nos volveremos a encontrar en esta misma plaza de aquí a seis semanas.
Al final de las seis semanas todo el pueblo obedientemente se congregó en la plaza del pueblo. El
rey llamó al primer paje, el cual llevaba consigo carros llenos de cosas asquerosas, horribles y
apestosas. “Dígame, buen paje,” preguntó el rey “¿qué me ha traído?” “O, Señor,” respondió el paje
“¡no sabía que en su reino hubiera cosas tan horribles y despreciables! ¡Dondequiera que miraba vi
cosas sucias y horrorosas!” “¿Qué?” dijo el rey, “¿no encontró nada hermoso?” “No, Su Majestad,
solo estaba buscando las cosas feas.”
A continuación el rey llamó al segundo paje, el cual había traído consigo cosas de una belleza tan
celestial que brillaban y deslumbraban a todos los presentes. Cestas llenas de flores aromáticas,
gemas brillantes, mariposas de colores caleidoscópicos y otros dones celestiales que solo un poeta
podría describir. “¿Y qué encontró Usted en su viaje?” le preguntó el rey al paje. “¡Señor, no podía
creer las cosas tan increíblemente hermosas que contiene su reino! ¡Por dondequiera que fui
encontré tantas cosas hermosas y sublimes que no me fue posible traerle de regreso más que una
muestra pequeña de ellas!” “Pero, ¿no vio Usted nada vil?” preguntó el sorprendido rey. “Pues, no
señor, solo estaba buscando cosas hermosas.”
El sabio rey se dirigió a sus súbditos: “Ven, mis amados súbditos, la lección está clara: uno
encuentra lo que busca.” De ese día en adelante nadie en el reino volvió a quejarse, y de hecho, el
reino llegó a ser conocido como uno de los lugares más felices de la tierra. ~ El Fin ~
Reflexión Semanal
“Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” (Ver Mateo 16:13-20) Estas palabras que
Jesús le dirigió a sus primeros discípulos también están dirigidas a cada uno de
nosotros. No hay otra alternativa. Jesús nos pregunta a cada uno de nosotros, “Y
ustedes, quién dicen que soy yo?” No es asunto de contestar con palabras, aunque a
veces eso tal vez sea necesario. Es cuestión de responder con nuestras propias vidas.
Sí, por el modo en que vivimos la gente que nos ve debería poder decir. Jesús es el
Señor de él. O, Jesús es el Señor de ella. San Pedro dio la respuesta perfecta, que le
fue dada por Dios mismo. Debido a eso, Jesús le encomendó las llaves del reino y
aun hoy en día, en lo que concierne a nosotros los Católicos, donde está Pedro, ahí
también está la iglesia. Necesitamos recordar que Dios le dio la respuesta perfecta a
Pedro. Como Jesús dijo: “esto no te lo ha revelado ningún hombre, sino mi Padre,
que está en el cielo.” Así pasa con nosotros. Si queremos dar buena respuesta a Jesús necesitamos la ayuda del
Espíritu Santo. Necesitamos encomendarnos a las intercesiones de María. Dios le encomendó a María la vida de
su Hijo. Nosotros haríamos bien en encomendarnos a ella a medida que damos respuesta a esta pregunta vital:
“¿quién dicen que soy yo?”
