Can We Talk? Spiritual Direction Demystified.
Hello Friends!
My name is KathleenWetstein. It was two years ago that my husband, Dan and I moved to Chicago from New Orleans. It was actually our tenth
move in the 31 years we’ve been married. States we’ve called home include Idaho, California, Nevada, and Colorado. We’ve also lived abroad
inThailand, Australia, Argentina, and England. We have three sons and five grandchildren. Two of our sons and our two grandsons live in our
home state of Montana; our middle son and his wife and three granddaughters live inVirginia. We know what it’s like to move and to be
moved. For Dan and me, the Holy Spirit is the great Mover and Shaker.
When we proclaim the Creed at Mass, we say “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life…” Friends, I do believe in the movement of the Holy Spirit! To
me, the Holy Spirit is the way to breathe, the way to live, the way to decide, and the way to love. The great feast of Pentecost is alive through the Gifts and Fruits of the
Holy Spirit. One of the most amazing realizations for me about the Holy Spirit is that not only is the Holy Spirit a person of God, but also the gift of God to you and
me! Let me be clear: God’s Spirit lives in you.The Spirit is alive in you whether you know it or not.
Do you experience the Holy Spirit? How do you experience the Holy Spirit in your everyday life? Is it your desire to learn how to hear God’s voice of invitation?
Would you like a companion to walk with you along the journey of discovery? God knows that life is full of joys and sorrows. Decisions both large and small are made
daily. I would like to offer you the idea of having a Spiritual Director in your life. What is a Spiritual Director? A Spiritual Director is a person trained and experienced
as a spiritual companion.
What does Spiritual Direction look like? Two people, the Director and the Directee meet regularly, usually once a month, to explore the experiences of God in
the everyday life of the Directee. Spiritual direction is NOT counseling, therapy, or a place to “fix” life’s problems or give advice. It IS a safe place to be heard, and
purposefully examine experiences which allows the Directee to notice one’s own awareness about who one really is and who God is for you. The Director is the
companion-listener for the Directee.
It has been part of my Faith Journey to be with a Spiritual Director in many capacities over the years. There were times when I saw a Spiritual Director while going
through a specific challenge; there were other times I simply needed a “prayer coach”. Mostly, I just needed to be heard, and to hear the guidance of the Holy Spirit in my
life. By God’s grace, it has also become part of my Faith Journey to formally undergo training as a Spiritual Director myself. I started the process in Denver when I was
a Catholic School teacher at St. Mary’s of Littleton. I pursued it in a full time capacity when we moved from Colorado to New Orleans and completed the certification
process here in Chicago at the Claret Center in Hyde Park.
Fr. Wayne has graciously offered space here at St. John Berchmans for me to offer Spiritual Direction, and expand my practice. I will also be facilitating group
opportunities to study and pray. The first will be a summer casual drop-in group open to men and women, onThursdays from 7-9 p.m., July 23-August 27. This Fall,
I will also be facilitating a 12-week series for women on Ignatian prayer and spirituality, entitled “Lord,Teach Me to Pray.” If you have questions or would like to talk,

An essential work of priests is to bless.
What exactly does this blessing mean? In
the first place, priests of God bless God.
They acknowledge the great and good things that God has done,
especially our salvation in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy
Spirit. Priests remind us, in other words, that we live in a world of
grace, a world blessed by God. Priests also bless the people of God
and some objects as well. In blessing people and objects, priests
invoke or call on God to be present. They ask that God would be
present to his people so that they can be healed and find strength
for their journey. They ask God to bless the objects that are used
to stir the devotion of people as they pray and remember the Lord
and his saints. In all their blessings, priests remind us of the holiness
of God, a holiness God shares with us, his sons and daughters.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The Women’s Center (a Catholic-based organization helping women
in crisis pregnancies and offering life-affirming alternatives to
abortion) needs YOU… Are you a college or HS student, a retired
adult, or a servant-hearted person with flexible M-F 9am-5pm
availability, looking to fill your time with volunteer work? Starting
now, your help is needed preparing 8,000 bottles for our Baby
Bottle Campaign by cleaning, tagging, and boxing them so they can
be sent out to churches and schools. The spare change we collect in
this campaign is our biggest fundraiser so your help is critical to its
success! We are located at 5116 N. Cicero Ave. (between Foster and
Elston). Hours are flexible but 3 hour shifts of 9am-noon, 1-4pm, or
other weekly hours are preferred. Or make a day of it: clean bottles
9am-noon, attend Mass in our St. Jude Chapel at noon, enjoy lunch,
then dive back in till 4pm or 5pm. Please let me know if you are
interested in helping on this project. I promise you will love your

SUMMER ON THE SQUARE
There are still plenty of openings for volunteers. This is a great
opportunity for new members to get acquainted with our
community and for our long-time members to celebrate in the
great things that are happening at Saint John Berchmans. If you
can help with the raffle sale or in any other way at Summer
on the Square, sign-up sheets are available in the vestibule or
you can contact Jennifer in the rectory office. Donations to
defray the costs are always appreciated. It will take the entire
community to make this event a success. Please consider
volunteering your time or purchasing a raffle ticket.
GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS
The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday,
August 30, 2015, at 2:45 PM, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735

¿Podemos Hablar? Dirección Espiritual Descubierta.
¡Hola Amigos!
Mi nombre es Kathleen Wetstein. Fue hace dos años que mi marido Dan y yo nos trasladamos a Chicago desde New Orleans. En realidad
fue nuestra décima mudanza en los últimos 31 años que hemos estado casados. Entre los estados que hemos vivido se incluyen Idaho,
California, Nevada y Colorado.También hemos vivido en el extranjero en Tailandia, Australia, Argentina e Inglaterra.Tenemos tres hijos
y cinco nietos. Dos de nuestros hijos y nuestros dos nietos viven en nuestro estado natal, en Montana; nuestro segundo hijo, su esposa y
tres nietas viven en Virginia. Sabemos lo que se siente moverse de un lado a otro. Para Dan y para mi, el Espíritu Santo
es un gran Influente.
Cuando proclamamos el Credo en la Misa, decimos: “Creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor y dador de vida ...” Amigos, yo creo en el movimiento del Espíritu
Santo! Para mí, el Espíritu Santo es la manera de respirar, de vivir, de decidir y de amar. La gran fiesta de Pentecostés vive a través de los dones y frutos del
Espíritu Santo. Una de las realizaciones más increíbles para mí sobre el Espíritu Santo, es que no sólo el Espíritu Santo es una persona de Dios, sino que
también es el don de Dios ¡para usted y para mí! Permítame aclarar: el Espíritu de Dios vive en usted. El Espíritu está vivo en usted aunque no lo sepa.
¿Usted experimenta el Espíritu Santo? ¿Cómo experimenta el Espíritu Santo en su vida cotidiana? ¿Desea aprender como escuchar la voz de la invitación
de Dios? ¿Le gustaría tener un compañero para caminar con usted a lo largo del viaje del descubrimiento? Dios sabe que la vida está llena de alegrías y
tristezas. Diariamente se toman decisiones grandes y pequeñas. Me gustaría ofrecerle la idea de tener un Director Espiritual en su vida. ¿Qué es un Director
Espiritual? Un Director Espiritual es una persona capacitada y con experiencia como compañero espiritual.
¿A qué se parece la Dirección Espiritual? Dos personas, el Director y el Dirigido se reunirán periódicamente, por lo general una vez al mes, para explorar
las experiencias de Dios en la vida cotidiana del Dirigido. La dirección espiritual NO es asesoramiento, terapia, o un lugar para “solucionar “ los problemas
de la vida o dar consejos. Es un lugar conveniente para el Dirigido de ser escuchado, con el propósito de examinar las experiencias que le permite notar la
propia conciencia acerca de quien realmente es y quién es Dios. El Director es el compañero-escuchador para el Dirigido.
Ha sido parte de mi jornada de fe el tener un Director Espiritual en muchas capacidades en los últimos años. Hubo momentos en que veía a un Director
Espiritual mientras que pasaba un desafío específico; había otras veces que simplemente necesitaba un “instructor de rezo”. Más que nada, solamente
necesitaba ser escuchada, y escuchar la guía del Espíritu Santo en mi vida. Por la gracia de Dios, pero también se ha convertido en parte de mi jornada de fe
el recibir formalmente a un entrenamiento como Directora Espiritual. Empecé el proceso en Denver cuando era una maestra de la Escuela Católica de Saint
Marie de Littleton. Lo logré en una capacidad de tiempo completo cuando nos mudamos de Colorado a New Orleans y terminé el proceso de certificación
aquí en Chicago en el Centro Claret en Hyde Park.
El Padre Wayne me ha ofrecido amablemente el espacio aquí en San Juan Berchmans para que ofrezca Dirección Espiritual, y amplié mi práctica. También
facilitaré oportunidades de grupo de estudio y oración. El primero será un grupo informal de verano abierto a hombres y mujeres, los jueves de 7-9 pm,
del 23 de julio al 27 de agosto. Este otoño, también facilitaré una serie de sesiones de 12 semanas para mujeres sobre la oración ignaciana y la espiritualidad,

Una de las tareas esenciales de un sacerdote es
bendecir. ¿Qué significa exactamente bendecir? En
primer lugar, los sacerdotes de Dios bendicen a
Dios. Ellos reconocen las magníficas y buenas cosas
que Dios ha realizado, especialmente nuestra salvación en Jesucristo por el
poder del Espíritu Santo. Los sacerdotes nos recuerdan, en otras palabras,
que vivimos en un mundo de gracia, un mundo bendecido por Dios. Los
sacerdotes también bendicen a las personas de Dios y también algunos
objetos. Al bendecir a las personas y a los objetos, el sacerdote invoca o
clama a Dios para que esté presente. Le piden a Dios que esté presente para
su pueblo, para que pueda ser sanado y encontrar la fuerza para continuar
su viaje. Le piden a Dios que bendiga los objetos que se utilizan para
alentar la devoción de las personas mientras oran y recuerdan al Señor
y a sus santos. En todas sus bendiciones, los sacerdotes nos recuerdan la
santidad de Dios, una santidad que Dios comparte con nosotros, sus hijos
e hijas.
OPORTUNIDAD DE VOLUNTARIADO
El Centro de Mujeres (una organización católica-basada en ayudar a las
mujeres con embarazos difíciles y ofreciendo alternativas que afirman la
vida y no el aborto) le necesita ... ¿Es usted un estudiante universitario
o secundaria, un adulto de jubilado, o una persona que desea servir
apasionadamente y está disponible lunes a viernes con horas flexibles de 9
a.m.-5 pm , y buscando ocupar su tiempo en trabajo voluntario? A partir
de ahora, su ayuda es necesaria preparando 8,000 botellas para nuestra
Campaña de Biberones, limpiándolas, marcándolas, y empaquetándolas para
que puedan ser enviadas a las Iglesias y escuelas. El cambio del dinero que
recibimos de esta campaña es nuestro mayor recaudador de fondos, es por
eso que su ayuda es fundamental para que tengamos éxito! Estamos ubicados
