July 10, 2016 ! Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Greetings and prayers dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Welcome to our Sunday celebration of the
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. !
!
Today is Sea Sunday, known in some areas as National Seafarers Sunday
or Maritime Day. The day is widely celebrated in fishing and seafaring
communities throughout the world.!
!
In our Catholic faith, the ministry of ministering to those who live and
work at sea is known as the Apostleship of the Sea. The nature of the
work of a seafarer takes them away from home for long periods of time, often without a parish setting to help them
maintain ties with the Church and their faith. Thus, a network of Apostleship of the Sea port offices and chaplains was
created to help meet the needs of this unique lifestyle.!
!
In the State of Florida, the Apostleship of the Sea ministers at six ports. In alphabetical order they are: Jacksonville,
Miami, Pensacola, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades and Tampa. Our Diocese has the responsibility for the Port of
Tampa.!
!
From the Apostleship of the Sea we learn of their ministry’s formation and background. “In 1920, Catholic port ministry
was conceived and developed in Glasgow, Scotland, by Rev. Donald Macintosh, Arthur Gannon, and Peter Anson, who
were concerned about the lack of witness the Church was showing aboard ship. Two years later they approached Pope
Pius XI, who bestowed his blessings on the ministry and encouraged the Apostleship of the Sea to extend its mission to
the oceans and shores of all the hemispheres.” !

Each nation has their own unique apostolate tailored to the needs of their country. The “Apostleship of the Sea of the
United States of America” is a ministry consisting of Catholic maritime ministers, cruise ship priests, mariners, and
others who support this special ministry for the people who work on the sea: “mariners, fishermen, dock workers,
workboat operators, their families, and all who work or travel on the waterways of the world”. There is a segment of this
population who live at sea year round. No matter their course, their needs are unique and it is essential to have someone
to serve their spiritual needs when they arrive in ports and areas unfamiliar to them. The apostolate serves to welcome,
reassure, support and comfort as it helps to keep them connected to and grounded in their faith.!

The main mission of the AOSUSA (Apostleship of the Sea in the United States of America) is “to teach and witness to
the Word of God and to serve God's people; especially seafarers, maritime personnel and people of the sea; by fostering
their growth and renewal, through prayer, study and Christian service.” In the United States, the Apostleship also
“provides priests for service onboard Cruise Ships in order to provide Sacramental and Pastoral Care for the Passengers,
Staff and Crew onboard.” !

So, on this special day of Sea Sunday we join in with the worldwide Church in praying for and giving thanks and
gratitude to seafaring men and women workers of the sea, and to the priests who serve them.!
!
The Official Prayer for the Apostleship of the Sea: “Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on all seafarers: Our Lady, Star
of the Sea, St. Peter, St. Andrew, pray for us. Lord, save us or we perish.” (Mt 8:25)!
!
We also continue to keep the Episcopal Transition in our prayers as we pray for Bishop Lynch, Pope Francis and the
selection of a new bishop for our Diocese.!
!
As we go out today let us reflect on one of today’s Psalms inspirations: “I will praise the name of God in song,!
and I will glorify him with thanksgiving.” Ps 69:31!

Prayer for a New Bishop!

Almighty and all loving God, Eternal Shepherd and
Guide, we are grateful for Bishop Lynch and his twenty
years of ministry in our diocese. During this time of
transition, we trust in Your love, confident that You will
once again give to the Diocese of St. Petersburg a
shepherd who will inspire us to be Christ’s heart of
mercy, His voice of hope and hands of justice. Guide
our new bishop to enlighten our hearts and minds with
the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments,
and the desire to serve you in all things. We ask this
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.!

Why do we believe that Christ uniquely
established our Church?!
!
In Matthew 16:1819, Jesus said, “And so I say to you,
you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against
it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in
Heaven.” Our church can be traced in an unbroken line
down through the centuries. For Catholics, oneness and
Christian unity are thought of primarily in organizational
and practical terms.!
!
We believe the Church is a living organism and an
organization. The central role of the Roman Church in
historic Christianity is seen in its unique and decisive
function in upholding Christian orthodoxy throughout
the ages, and in the pope’s leadership in ecumenical
councils. We believe in an episcopal Church
government, which means bishops are responsible for
guiding the Church in their geographical areas.
Catholics maintain that God instituted this form of
government, as indicated in the Bible.!

A reference to the visibility of the Church is in Matthew
5:14 when Jesus told his disciples, “You are the light of
the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel
basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all
in the house. Just so, your light must shine before
others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify
your heavenly Father.” !

Janitorial Position ! PartTime: St. Ignatius of Antioch in Tarpon Springs is seeking an experienced part
time Janitorial worker for morning duty four days a week ( which will include Sunday ) with the ability to work
flexible shifts as needed. Qualified applicants must have general knowledge and experience in facility cleaning and
