These past 60 years are the outcome of the work of almost 6,000 professionals who continue carrying out incredible projects and have all contributed towards the innovations that will shape the future. José Manuel de Sendagorta, co-founder of SENER. Neither enthusiasm nor talent is lacking. Let’s look back on the major milestones of a journey that began in 1956 with Enrique de Sendagorta, who was soon joined by his brother José Manuel (known to his colleges as “Manu”) and the nearly 6,000 professionals who continue to carry out incredible projects. They have all contributed towards the innovations that will shape the future in the mediumand long-term. A multidisciplinary engineering company aintaining a company’s position as a benchmark for innovation in various business sectors is no easy task easy, and doing so for 60 years is a laudable achievement. In 2016 SENER is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary with the determination to continue making history In the 1950’s, when the Doctor in Marine Engineering Enrique de Sendagorta stopped to think about the future, he saw a country with no shortage of things to build. At just 30 years old he was head of the Technical Ship Building Office of the company La Naval, a position that gave him solid technical training and a growing reputation. He traveled across Europe and observed the most advanced industries of Germany, England and France. In this position of Technical Office Head, ship owners turned to him, many in search of advice. So Enrique dreamed of an independent engineering company in Spain that could apply the developments he had seen in other countries and even Cámara de vacío en el Centro de Integración y Ensayos de SENER en Madrid (España). This dream took shape in 1956 under the name of SENER, the first Spanish engineering company founded as such. SENER was born on the basis of three important premises: to create high-quality projects, to anticipate the industry’s problems with innovative solutions, and to be independent and flexible in order to adapt to the market’s demands. Despite the major financial crisis in Spain, SENER quickly became a technical marine office recognized for its excellent work. It procured contracts and expanded its workforce, which mostly consisted of recent engineering graduates from Bilbao’s technical colleges. In 1961, José Manuel de Sendagorta joined as Head of the company. highway, Bilbao airport and its superport, conceived by the brilliant and restless mind of Manu. Meanwhile, the company continued advancing in the marine sector and developing the FORAN System, a software for the design and construction of marine vessels and devices which, after 50 years of continuous reinvention, is currently the technological world leader in this sector. Manu also promoted the incursion into the aerospace sector, with the rocket launch tower project in Kiruna (Sweden) for the ESRO, predecessor of the current European Space Agency (ESA), which was awarded to SENER through an international tender in 1967 and which was the start of its high-profile activities. Today there are more than 270 SENER devices and systems in the satellites and space vehicles of NASA, ESA, JAXA and Roscosmos, and the company acts as prime contractor of complete missions. A Doctor of Aeronautical Engineering, Manu Sendagorta already had a solid professional track record when he became the Managing Director of SENER. He quickly pushed for the company’s diversification, opening SENER up to new areas such as industry, to undertake integrated designs for processing plants including refineries and petrochemical plants, nuclear plants, paper mills, etc., as well as transportation infrastructure, with contributions like the Bilbao-Behovia In 1986 the current President, Jorge Sendagorta, was incorporated onto the management team. He personally took on the project conceived by his uncle Manu that lead to the creation of ITP. It was one of the most important and successful challenges in SENER’s history and set the basis of its current structure as a corporate group. With 53.125% of the stocks, SENER is today the majority shareholder of ITP, the only aircraft engine company in Spain and ninth in the world for sales within the anticipate solutions to the problems of shipyards across the continent and the industries of other infant sectors in general. 8 SENER noticias diciembre / December 2015 aeronautical engine and components sector. Shortly after undertaking this industrial initiative, SENER embarked on the promotion of other companies within the Renewable Energies sector, such as Zabalgarbi and Torresol Energy, where it applied its own technological approaches. This gave the SENER Group a structure based on three main areas: Engineering and Construction, Aeronautics and Energy and Environment. The International Project SENER began its first commercial incursions outside of Spain in the 60s, with the FORAN System, the takeoff point for its internationalization, and a little later with engineering projects in Latin America. But the real international momentum came in the first decade of the century, when there was heightened determination to establish divisions in countries where the prospects for infrastructure development, both civil and industrial, promised good sustainability over time. Relying on local divisions not only permitted a closer relationship with clients, it also enriched SENER by incorporating engineers from the country where the work was to be implemented onto its engineering team. It was a risky decision but one that was well thought-out and planned, and it led to the opening of divisions in Portugal, Argentina, and Mexico. Next came Japan, Poland, Algeria, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, China, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, India and the United Kingdom. It was a successful strategy because SENER was able to foresee market changes so, when the financial crisis erupted in 2008, the company had paved the way to continued growth outside of Spain, where the domestic market was dried up. In fact, during the crisis years, SENER continued to expand into new areas, with the aforementioned divisions and numerous projects. For example, Mexico is currently the second most important country for the SENER Group in terms of number of people, with more than 1,000 professionals working in the Engineering and Construction division and in one of the most important ITP factories in the world. At the beginning of the current century, SENER also took a qualitative leap forwards, progressively incorporating construction and industrial production activities. Thus it began to undertake turnkey projects, especially for industrial facilities in the field of Energy. The Zabalgarbi municipal solid waste treatment plant and the Gemasolar thermosolar plant in Spain, the Gate terminal storage and regasification facilities in The Netherlands, and the NOORo solar complex in Morocco have established SENER as a first-rate construction company, always under the premise of technological diversification. At the same time, SENER was also advancing in terms of capabilities and resources in the area of industrial production, especially in Aerospace, achieving the trust of its clients to design and produce very complex and highquality integrated systems. Thanks to the fact that it is a multidisciplinary company like very few in the world, today SENER can undertake extraordinarily diverse engineering projects with flexibility and guaranteed performance. of various disciplines, and, above all, trust. Only by facing challenges and believing in their own abilities can an engineer grow professionally, develop their skills to the full, enjoy their work, and, as a result of all this, conceive exceptional projects made to improve society. It is a virtuous circle that has given SENER progressive and wellplanned growth, in which SENER offers its persons exciting goals, inviting them to join technical challenges in new areas of activity. This is a model that the company and its community of professionals have built to last. Consolidation for the future Today, SENER can compete in the global market thanks to its exceptional team of professionals that give it the ability to innovate in many fields of activity – its most recognizable characteristic. As in its early years of marine projects, clients continue to come to SENER when faced with engineering problems that require innovative solutions. And SENER prides itself on providing added value to its clients, improving their original ideas with superior solutions that have inherited the genius that thought up FORAN, for example, or the Punta Lucero breakwater. In this sense, there is a continuity in working methods, which are transmitted inside the company and are founded on professional respect, freedom, collaboration and teamwork, the exchange of ideas between experts With this shared drive, SENER technology has traveled to Mars on pioneering missions, it is found on highspeed train lines in the US, the UK, France, and Spain, it leads the market in thermosolar energy, and it is a benchmark in marine design and construction. This continued evolution based on superior technology foreshadows a future of opportunities, but it also requires the company to consolidate its own strengths while adapting its processes to emerge victorious in the big leagues. And to continue encouraging people’s passion to follow their dreams. With this kind of balance, SENER can use its engineering knowledge and experience, as it has been doing these past 60 years, to forge a solid future. This is SENER’s legacy, and it will also be its future. Interview with SENER President, Jorge Sendagorta (in the picture, on the left) and SENER’s founder and Honorary President, Enrique de Sendagorta (on the right of the image). J.S.: Nunca pensamos a tan largo plazo. The crux of our business strategy has always been to trust in our people and to build SENER to stand the test ” of time. puertas abiertas y abordemos los problemas con transparencia y confianza, en la que busquemos a los mejores ingenieros para nuestros equipos, y donde la iniciativa y la innovación sean partes integrantes. We do not settle for developing routine solutions to achieve the dreams of ” others; we dream our own dreams. W hat were the early years of SENER like? Enrique de Sendagorta: SENER started out as an office of people working on ship projects, with a desire to advance within the field of engineering. We began working with a view to doing things properly and we started to build a loyal client base thanks to our growing reputation with regards the technical knowledge of our workforce, as well as the quality of our solutions and work. We were flexible enough to adapt to the market, which was small and changing, and we had to face a variety of different issues. From the outset, we placed maximum confidence in our team members. It could not have worked any other way, we had to be able to delegate so we could travel and acquire clients. I then started to work on new business ventures when Manu came along to help me with SENER. Today, the foundations on which the company was built are still intact. The crux of our business strategy has always been to trust in our people and to “build SENER to stand the test of time”, continuously pushing back new boundaries to grow and diversify. Furthermore, from the outset, SENER offered its clients a wealth of ideas to develop their own approaches. lives of people across the globe. For the company’s family ownership. And for our diversification based on innovative initiatives and centered around finding the most effective solutions for tackling problems. Jorge Sendagorta (izquierda/left), y/and Enrique de Sendagorta (derecha/right). We often began by providing guidance and advice to ship owners who had very preliminary business plans, and then continued to support them until the very end. Sometimes, shipyards also needed support to manage purchases or hire the right suppliers to complete a project. This is how we gained loyal clients. Could you give a summary of the past sixty years? E.S.: We are extremely proud of the last sixty years. SENER has been the most important thing in the lives of the three presidents. My son Jorge has spent thirty years at the helm of the company, my brother Manu spent twenty-five years, and I have dedicated my entire life to SENER. I remained closely involved with the company even when I was not officially working for it. Jorge Sendagorta: We are proud for a myriad of reasons: for having built a business that has continued to be successful for sixty years, during which our company has seen significant growth. For having created respectable employment and, as a result, supporting a host of families and contributing to the professional development of many engineers. For service to the community due to our engineering and construction projects that improve the “ El crecimiento, al igual que el beneficio, es el resultado de hacer las cosas bien. Growth, as well as profit, is the ” Did you ever anticipate that SENER would be transformed into the technology giant that it is today? result of doing a job well done. J.S.: We never thought on such a longterm basis. You always think of the short-term results, the next four or five years at most. So no, we didn’t foresee it. However, the most important aspect of creating a successful company is not setting out an ambitious business plan, but continuously searching for ways to improve its current activity, from day to day. Growth is a result of this search for continuous improvement, in the same way that profit is not a direct objective, rather the result of doing a job well done. achieve a balance between the various opinions and ideas that converge within a company: the shareholders, professionals, clients, etc. What are we doing now that’s better than before? J.S.: We have advanced remarkably. Both of us were determined to institutionalize SENER, because Manu’s illness at an early age highlighted a weakness in the business. We decided to strengthen the corporation with the development of a professional board, management control systems and a family protocol. We professionalized the management team based on an objective meritocracy... we also built up our engineering knowledge, becoming builders and industrialists over time. We have ventured out into new fields because we have continuously been innovating, along with science itself... the company must continuously strengthen itself. We have to improve consistently in almost all areas. E.S.: Whatever the case may be, continuous growth is achieved by preserving core elements, such as fair treatment, trust, durability, and the flexibility to tackle new challenges, in accordance with the opportunities that arise. Clear principles must be set out to What are SENER’s core values? J.S.: Values begin with the desire to work together to offer the best solutions to the technical and economic problems within a certain field. This is the vocation of the engineer, and it forms the basis of SENER’s activity. But we do not want to do this any old way: we want to work within a living organization where we work as a team, with trust. We strive for a company in which people can feel at home, where our doors are always open and from where we can tackle problems with transparency and trust. We search for only the best engineers to form part of our teams, in which initiative and innovation are key aspects. We do not settle for developing routine solutions to achieve the dreams of others; we dream our own dreams and, at times, those of others, on behalf of our clients. Sometimes we even propose ideas for other, unaffiliated businesses, to which we can provide solutions, as was the case with the shipping company Marítima del Norte, which SENER helped to create and for which it designed 35 ships. How does one successfully maintain a team of talented and qualified professionals, as SENER has done? J.S.: It is a virtuous circle: one must aim to provide solutions, to carry out difficult tasks. Limiting oneself to developing the engineering work demanded by clients might lead to an effective business, but it may be lacking in ideas. Dreams and ideas SENER noticias diciembre / December 2015 13 Entrevista / Interview is appropriate for developing their abilities, and secondly, career training, through work experience at SENER. are what encourage people to do things differently, such as thermosolar plants, high-speed lines, the creation of ITP... Our ability to attract good engineers depends on the internal environment of trust, transparency and open doors, as well as the ability to offer new challenges to our professionals so that they can devise and execute more ambitious engineering dreams. Our people are proud to be involved in such innovative projects. E.S.: Talented people go where they are wanted. Manu used to say “Brains are like hearts, they go where they are appreciated.” Developing this mutual respect between the company and its engineers is fundamental. J.S.: And SENER has endeavored to be desirable for these top engineers, by offering them important technical challenges and an appropriate team environment, where they can feel personally comfortable and professionally vibrant. What is the greatest achievement in the history of SENER for each of you? E.S.: SENER’s greatest achievement is SENER itself, its team of people, its projects. J.S.: SENER and its footprint, that is, its engineering accomplishments as a whole and the engineering careers developed in-house. It is impossible to choose a particular project as a representative achievement, as there are so many and they are not comparable. SENER is a family business; what is the link between the family and the company, and what are its values? E.S.: The family has been a key factor for SENER, firstly because, as a shareholder, it has never applied any pressure due to the affection it feels for the company Furthermore, SENER is based on meritocracy and the family adheres to this. We decided, for example, that the family wouldn’t hold a majority on the 14 SENER noticias diciembre / December 2015 Enrique de Sendagorta. board: it is composed of four families, two independent members and two executives. J.S.: SENER and the family have some mechanisms in place so that some members of the Sendagorta family of sufficient merit can become involved in the work of the company. And the following generation is already being trained to work at SENER. In general, the family is very proud of SENER, of its history and its achievements, and their sense of belonging to the project is very strong. Although SENER is the family’s main asset, tensions have never arisen between members. In 2002, SENER and the Sendagorta family created the SENER Foundation. What is its mission? E.S.: The Foundation was established to promote the development of talented people, with a clear focus on engineering, to enable and enhance their contributions as engineers. It is alive, it is flexible and has objectives that reach beyond the main project of scholarships, on which it was based and which continue to be its most important activity. Forty-five people have already received scholarship grants from the Foundation. These individuals have benefited from dual training: firstly, academic, in a center of their choice that J.S.: The Foundation’s first program aims to provide talented individuals from disadvantaged countries with access to international training and the chance to begin their engineering careers within a leading firm. It is a philanthropic idea, but we also expect these individuals to bring us some fresh perspectives during the course of their scholarship and integration in SENER. We hope they can offer us cultural enrichment, as well as engineering expertise. The idea is to gain different points of view, which are always beneficial in fostering innovation. Some will stay with us to work at SENER, whilst others will develop their profession in their country of origin or in other countries, and, may, at some point, collaborate with us in the future. What does SENER continue to ask of its workforce? J.S.: The people working at SENER are encouraged to aim high when creating solutions, to help us develop our task as engineers. We ask them for their dreams of a better world through engineering, as well as the ability to work with us in an integrated team. Engineering as a vocation is not limited to the engineers: every person working with us should feel proud of SENER’s projects and contributions to progress and advancement. The company as a whole is responsible for innovation. Sixty years is nothing... what does the future hold for the company? J.S.: Improving ourselves will secure a future for SENER. In the medium-term, we must constantly improve to ensure a more prosperous future. Our legacy should also be seen in the satisfaction of the people that make up SENER, in the development of our vocation as an engineering company, in our relationships with colleagues, and, of course, in our projects, which, thanks to their improved solutions, contribute to the advancement of society. S pace mechanisms – two deceptively simple words; what does it mean to place them together? Separately, the word ‘space’ is a source of inspiration for many of us. For centuries we have been looking up to the sky with awe, attempting to find some answers to essential questions of our origins and existence: Where have we come from? Where are we going to? Who are we? ‘Mechanisms’, on the other hand, can seem a much more mundane term, related to what are often considered basic devices, surrounding us in our everyday existence, from DVD players to computer hard disks to data servers and so on. Most of the time such terrestrial mechanisms have been developed to make our lives easier, and are constantly improving in terms of performance and flexibility, seemingly with no limit to what can be achieved. But put the two words together and things become much more complicated. Designing mechanisms for space is a hugely demanding matter. It might be 16 SENER noticias diciembre / December 2015 Lionel Gaillard en el evento ESMATS 2015, coordinado por SENER junto con la ESA. Lionel Gaillard during ESMATS 2015, an event coordinated by SENER along with ESA. thought at first that space would be a benign realm to operate in, but this is forgetting the violent launch phase of a mission, during which any spacecraft gets mechanically ‘tortured’. Then, once within the space environment, which seems so calm and enchanting from Earth, the satellite and its mechanisms are then subjected to many other kinds of stress, such as wide extremes of temperature, radiation exposure and perpetual hard vacuum – all without any easy possibility of repair. masterpieces being achieved may not be easily understood by the neophyte, and some basic knowledge is needed in order to fully appreciate their complexity and capabilities. All the details count, and have their own weight when it comes to making space mechanisms more complete and reliable. The contrast between the enticing appearance of space from here and the reality is huge – it is true to say there is in fact scarcely any place more hostile. It is certainly not a welcoming locale for the technologies we have optimised over long centuries on the ground, targeting mainly everyday uses. This is also what makes space mechanisms so interesting to develop. Just as in art, where it is often the constraints that are imposed upon artists or they impose upon themselves that leads to the highest level of creativity and artistic steps forward. Developing mechanisms for space can therefore also be understand as an art, within which many limitations are faced due to physics alone, such as the inability to use the same materials, equivalent lubricants or the standard combinations of the two that would be utilised on the ground. In addition –as in art– the Technologies for space exploration have only been in existence for a little longer than half a century. There is still a long road ahead, full of unknowns needing to be understood and tackled in order to permit humankind to continue our quest for knowledge, and the acquisition of new services from space to help in our day-to-day life: internet and multimedia broadcasting; satellite navigation; weather forecasting; climate change monitoring and so on. Examples of the kind of challenging mechanisms being developed for such purposes include scanning mechanisms for Earth observation missions, antenna and thruster deployment and pointing devices for telecommunication missions. For the even more challenging missions to come, novel mechanisms will certainly also be needed, and in most cases their role will be mission enabling. New breakthroughs in this domain will be essential, for which the space artists who are within us will blossom further. That project was produced by a consortium of engineering firms and SENER’s task consisted in analyzing the design of a 27-km long metro line with an estimated investment of USD 6.9 billion, in order to optimize its value. Using standardized procedures and methods developed by SENER, a team of experts identified a set of opportunities within the project that can reduce investment, operational and financial costs, and the time until the line becomes operational. At all times, the team attempted to find a balance between these cost cuttings and the performance of the service, such as improved efficiency in rail operations and in the level of service offered to passengers. SENER conducted this analysis from a lifecycle perspective and by looking at design aspects, phased construction, timelines and risks, in order to optimize socioeconomic return on investment. This is the second Bogotá metro project in which SENER is taking part, having led the international consortium responsible for the ‘Conceptual design of the public transportation system, operational design and the legal and financial assessment of the first metro line within the framework of the Integrated Public Transport System (SITP) of the city of Bogotá’. This work was successfully concluded in 2011 and set the precedent for the project that has recently been put to the abovementioned Value Engineering study. • Upgrades the use of low-density railway lines without large track investments. • Automatic protection of the rolling stock, regardless of the human factor. • Centralized control of the trains, with no geographical limitations. • Flexibility in the management of rail operations. • Increases in the infrastructure transportation capacity. • Highest safety levels (CENELEC), reliability and redundancy: fail-safe. B lockSAT is an innovative system for the signaling and management of railroad traffic patented by SENER that allows safe traffic circulation without the need to install additional elements on the track. SENER implements innovative technical solutions in all its projects to guarantee the safety of its operations. The latest development is BlockSAT, a new system to manage the railway operations based on GPS positioning and inertial navigation with wireless communications, especially designed for low-density traffic routes in which train detection systems are not in place. GPS receivers, Doppler radars and inertial sensors (gyroscopes) which allow the real-time computation of the train’s position and speed, as well as a determination of the occupied segments of track. A wireless communications system (GPRS/3G or satellite where coverage is poor) is responsible for transmitting this data to the control center, where another set of equipment is installed. The BlockSAT unit at the control center is able to safely establish the possible routes for each train, using the track occupancy information, since the system calculates the incompatibilities. Once each route is created, the control center unit sends movement authorizations and restrictions to the trains. The on-board unit informs the train operator (who should acknowledge its reception) of the movement authorizations and speed restriction on the journey, whilst monitoring the train data at all times (position, track occupation and instantaneous speed) to inform the control center. Thanks to constant monitoring of the position, speed and track occupation, the on-board unit verifies the completion of the movement authorizations received and ensures that no stop sign is overpassed and any maximum speed is exceeded, thanks to a HMI (Human-Machine Interface) device which generates alarms to alert the train operator. Furthermore, the on-board system is connected to the emergency stop brake, that can be activated if the operator does not succeed to accomplish the received instructions. Functioning of the system Therefore, BlockSAT is an automatic train protection system in which safety is not reliant on the human factor. It has been designed and constructed according to the European Union safety standards and it is a fail-safe system. BlockSAT is composed of on-board equipment which integrates a set of BlockSAT is an innovative system because it is the only one on the market that combines GPS signals, inertial navigation and wireless communications, to guarantee that routes are completely safe at all times, without the need for elements on the track to position the train. Currently, SENER has completed the development of BlockSAT, which has been tested and is undergoing the validation process on freight routes in collaboration with Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), which involves the installation of the system in three locomotives and in the FGC operational control center in Rubí (Barcelona). Performance first tests: results during the • Positioning of the train with an accuracy below 2 m, even in tunnels, where GPS signal is lost. • Speed estimation accuracy below 0.5 m/s. • Optimal detection of track occupancy on parallel tracks after passing a switch point. • Continuous communication with the control center by GPRS link without data-loss. Subsequent to the validation of BlockSAT in the FGCs freight routes, it shall be implemented as a signaling and operation system on the passenger line from Lérida to La Pobla de Segur, which will be able to be operated from the Rubí control center. BlockSAT has joined forces with other cutting-edge technological solutions for transport infrastructure from SENER, such as the STElec software for railway traction power simulations, employed by Ferrocarril Metropolità de Barcelona (FMB) in its vehicles; a crosswind prediction system; and Aerotraviesa®, a sleeper design that minimizes flying ballast, which SENER played a key role in developing in collaboration with Adif, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the CIDAUT Foundation. SENER has developed the regeneration technology by adding a hydrotreatment in stages to the ” conventional process. O ne of SENER’s distinctive features is its innovation in technology solutions, including the regeneration of used oils. SENER owns a regeneration process that involves The process designed by SENER manages to recover base lubricants from used oils by extracting them with propane and then distilling them, without producing any type of solid waste. The regenerated base lubricants have the same quality as the virgin lubricants. In addition, no hydrotreatment is required, so this process is particularly suitable for low-capacity plants where hydrogen treatment is not economically viable. SENER’s technology achieves a group I base lubricant (according to the American Petroleum Institute classification system) but is very close to group II, as it meets two of the three requirements (the percentage of saturates and the viscosity index). However, the sulphur content is above of that required for group II so SENER set itself the challenge to alter the existing process in order to obtain base oils with lower amounts of sulphur and thus meet growing demand in the group II base oils market. To accomplish this target, SENER has developed the regeneration technology by adding a hydrotreatment in stages to the conventional process, allowing it to obtain group II base lubricants. The high hydrogen consumption in this kind of facility makes it very difficult to run a profitable effectiveness. For this reason, SENER has conceived an alternative to the usual consumption of hydrogen bottles: generating hydrogen on site from methanol. This innovative concept has led SENER to take out a new patent on this system. The main topics included in this overhaul are as follows: • Refurbishment and enlargement of the accommodation areas to fit up to 313 people (crew, research personnel and passenger), both for the existing and the new ones. • Increment of the research area onboard reaching a total of 400 sqm available. • Increment of the liquid cargo capacity until 650 m3. • Increment of the cargo hold capacity until 930 t. for dry cargo, 120 m3 for refrigerated cargo, 1,000 drums, 500 gas cylinders and 1,200 m3 of different cargo types. T he repair and upgrading engineering works for Argentinian Navy’s icebreaker, Almirante Irizar (RHAI in its Spanish acronym), requested to SENER after the fire accident during the SENER has developed this work with its FORAN System for marine design and production and in conjunction with Tandanor, the designated shipyard for the construction, and with the Argentinian Navy’s personnel. • Classification, class marks and certificates according to Det Norske Veritas requirements, IMO (MARPOL – SOLAS) requirements and the Antarctic Treaty and the Madrid Protocol, in force at the time the ship repair started. • Structural analysis using Finite Elements Model (FEM) and engineering processes during the dismantling of the damaged parts while in floating condition, with deformation analysis through strain gauges. As a consequence from the incidences suffered by the ship, 75% of her inner structures (decks, bulkheads and superstructures) located aft from the accommodation area (frame 84) were severe or totally affected. Pipes, fittings and auxiliary equipment, HVAC ducts, cable trays, cables laid and distribution panels located aft from frame 84 were completely destroyed or heavily damaged. All the main and auxiliary diesel generators were also lost, as well as the main and secondary distribution switchboards, and the emergency generator with its console. Meanwhile, the electric propulsion engines and the auxiliary propulsion equipment suffered minor damage, caused by the smoke and high temperatures. The outer shell and And all the above under the constraints from the economic parameters and the shipyard building and strategic limitations. In order to have a complete understanding of the magnitude of the project, it must be known that these extensive rebuilding works are far more complex than a new building. The complete project was the conjunction of a general repair of parts not affected by the fire, some ordinary tasks typical from a dry-docking, new structures, piping, ducting, cable trays and some refurbishment for out-of-date equipment and systems. Furthermore, one of the most challenging aspects for SENER was to set the ship owner requirement of having a classified ship, due to the vast changes that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and rules have suffered, since 1978, the RHAI’s year of construction. It is to be noticed that the Almirante Irizar is a lot more than a simple icebreaker: she is also a general and refrigerated cargo, liquid cargo, passenger, scientific research, hospital and logistics support vessel, with a hull designed for navigation and ice breaking in Antarctic waters. RHAI also has the capability to run under UMS condition (Unmanned Engine Room), and adds a modern flight deck and a JP1 jet refueling station for helicopter operations from the ship. SENER noticias diciembre / December 2015 43 Energía y Medio Ambiente / Energy & Environment the contract, all the while meeting the client’s needs with appropriate diligence. Gemasolar’s field of heliostats. Torresol Energy owns three thermosolar plants in Spain –the pioneering Gemasolar plant in Seville, and the twin Valle 1 & Valle 2 plants in Cádiz– and it has implemented a series of measures to cut costs in all three. Focusing on Operation and Maintenance (O&M) at the plants, the measures are wide-ranging, and include combining and renegotiating contracts, improving the purchasing process, conducting intense searches for lower-cost suppliers without a decrease in the quality of supplies or services, working on the plant’s selfconsumption, and optimizing internal and external resources. As an example of this last measure, the internal payrolls of Valle 1 & Valle 2 have been increased to seven employees, but the number of subcontracted personnel has been reduced to 17. The purchasing of replacement parts has also been optimized through adjustments to some of the maintenance ranges for the equipment. This measure, which entailed considerable effort, was made possible by the experience the Torresol O&M team has acquired in these solar facilities, whose technological concept is wholly unique. Gemasolar has special importance in this regard, being the first ever plant with the central tower and high-temperature storage configuration to enter commercial operation. The Torresol Energy team has achieved cost savings without decreasing the projects’ efficiency or safety. To do so, the General Management, along with the Plant Managers, looked for an equilibrium between improvements in O&M and economic streamlining of processes, managing to find a positive balance between the profits achieved and the risks assumed. Torresol Energy can now be considered a pioneer in reducing the costs of thermosolar plants, and a large degree of this experience can be extrapolated to other projects in the future, with the necessary adjustments for each project’s specific features. Accordingly, this long-term vision of applying what it is currently learning to the development of new facilities is something Torresol Energy has made part of its work philosophy. This experience can be shared with other companies in the SENER group. In fact, Torresol Energy remains in constant contact with the SENER engineering teams working on the design of thermosolar plants and other power facilities, so that it can share the lessons it has learned and make proposals for reducing costs and improving O&M in industrial plants. A ir-independent propulsion (AIP) represents a technological breakthrough for conventional submarines. In addition to the diesel-run energy generator that requires exterior air for combustion of the conventional submarine, those with an AIP system also use energy sources that do not require surface air, such as fuel cells. This allows them to be submerged without being detected for much longer than diesel electrical submarines, which have to emerge to the surface and operate with snorkel when their diving range given by their batteries on board is over. The fuel cell-based AIP, which is currently being used with successful results, allows the submarine to generate the energy it needs from hydrogen and oxygen. However, hydrogen generation system still needs to be improved, as it is stored in very bulky, heavy metal hydride cylinders which have a big impact on crucial factors such as the shipped weight and the space occupied inside the submarine. To solve this problem, and given that the general market trend is to build ever larger submarines, SENER has partnered with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the European leader in submarine construction, to develop an AIP based on the methanol reforming process, which allows the hydrogen needed to feed the fuel cell to be produced on board. A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM The development of the AIP system for submarines has been made possible thanks to the multidisciplinary structure of SENER, which is made up of experts from very diverse fields. Specifically, the team working on this project has included engineers from the Aerospace Division for integrating the fuel cell; Process, Instrumentation, Control, Electrical, Boiler and Mechanical engineers; experts in Shock and Acoustics and Piping; technicians specializing in SENER’s FORAN marine construction system and other professionals. Between them, SENER noticias diciembre / December 2015 61 Tecnología / Technology they have developed a system with excellent commercial potential in the submarines market, and one of SENER’s most noteworthy innovations of recent years: the CO2 dissolver patent. Through this project, SENER has acquired the capacity to act as prime contractor for the entire AIP system alongside the major shipyards. High-pressure oxygen supply unit This is used to adapt the condition of the low-pressure liquid oxygen available on board in a self-contained tank, based on the requirements of the high-pressure methanol reforming unit, and to then supply it (at high pressure) uninterruptedly to this unit. SENER’s involvement in the new AIP system includes four main subsystems: CO2 compression unit Its purpose is to release the exhaust gases from the reforming unit into the sea when the submarine reaches depths of over 200-250 m. Because the reforming unit operates at 25 barg, the difference in pressure between the exhaust gases and the exterior conditions below this depth has to be closed, by means of a compression phase. At lesser depths, the gases can be released directly into the sea (by means of the dissolution unit) from the reforming unit, avoiding the compressor and saving energy. This unit consists of an expansion tank and a wet CO2 compressor. Supply and management of the methanol storage unit and reactive water This subsystem has the same purpose as its predecessor: firstly, it adapts and supplies the methanol required by the reforming unit and stored in the in-built tanks of the boat, and secondly, it manages and stores the pure water produced by the fuel cell, as part of the submarine’s load compensation. CO2 dissolution unit The biggest technological challenge for SENER was to develop a dissolution unit for the exhaust gases that result from the process. SENER has designed a system that releases these gases outside the submarine, while ensuring that the boat’s acoustic signature is not detectable at a certain distance. To achieve this, SENER has succeeded in dissolving these gases (approximately 98% CO2 and 2% O2) in sea water, by suctioning directly from the submarine at the same pressure as the depth at which the vessel is located. In the process’s toughest conditions, SENER achieves a maximum bubble size of 200 μm at a depth of 18 m for warm waters, thereby contributing towards the submarine’s stealth discretion. The CO2 dissolution unit is an innovation that is in the process of being patented in Europe, as there is currently no similar product on the market. www.sener.es Próximos eventos con participación de SENER Next events with SENER participation ENERO - MAYO 2016 / JANUARY - MAY 2016 Feria y conferencia ferroviaria internacional Middle East Rail 03/08-09/2016.
