O’KEEFFE MONTHLY PORTRAIT Georgia O’Keeffe Middle School 510 S. Thornton Avenue Madison, WI 53703 Kay D. Enright, Principal Telephone: 608/204-6820 Attendance: 608/204-6821 Fax: 608/204-0561 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ March 2013 Newsletter Dear O’Keeffe Families and Staff, Eighth graders have completed their course planning for high school – today; they are sporting purple or red beads in honor of their new schools! East counselors met with students and shared important information. Parents/Guardians have reviewed and approved schedule cards. Please call Paul Chotlos, Counselor, if you have further questions. Remember, the first day at East is 9th graders only – it makes the transition to high school very easy. We are looking forward to meeting our 6th graders and have a transition timeline established. We will be meeting with 5th grade teachers and support staff. In this newsletter, you will find an “O’Keeffe Middle School Student Information Form for 2013-2014”, which is very helpful to us for scheduling all of our students. Please do not request particular teachers; we are interested in learning about ways your student learns best, strategies you have found to teach your child and other pertinent information you have to share. WKCE information should be in backpack mail to you with an accompanying letter from the District. The letter explains that the State of Wisconsin established new proficiency cut-offs. Please know that we use this information in conjunction with MAP data as well as classroom performance to make decisions about instruction, interventions and enrichment. Two Fridays ago, we had our Honor Roll Party. 275 of our 462 students were on the honor roll. We had many students making significant improvements this quarter. Continue to encourage your student to stay for Homework Club and please continue to monitor Infinite Campus for upcoming assignments. Our goal for every student is consistent improvement and engagement. Our extracurricular activities also support these goals. If you have questions about your password, please contact Christy Fay, Learning Coordinator, at 204-6835. Thanks to our Parent Teacher Group for hosting a workshop on social media at our last meeting. Please continue to monitor your student’s use of social media and video games. Limiting screen time to less than two hours a day is recommended for all of us! Spring Break is early this year – Monday, March 25th through Monday, April 1st. School resumes on Tuesday, April 2nd. Would PEOPLE be a good program for your 6th grade student? Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the PEOPLE Program and instructions for O’Keeffe parents about how to apply. For more detailed information about the UW-Madison PEOPLE Program, visit their web site http://www.peopleprogram.wisc.edu or call the PEOPLE Program office at 262-7415. What is PEOPLE Program? PEOPLE is a pre-college pipeline for students of color and low-income students, most of whom are the first in their families to potentially attend college. PEOPLE Program prepares students to apply, be successfully admitted and enroll at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. PEOPLE accepts highly motivated students for a rigorous program to build study skills, explore and strengthen academic and career interests, and gain a positive experience on a world-class campus. Who Can Participate? PEOPLE is designed for students with strong academic potential who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and also are African American, American Indian, Asian American (with an emphasis on Southeast Asian American), Chicano/a, Puerto Rican, Latino/a, or low-income students. Sixth grade students in the Madison Metropolitan School District are eligible to apply to the Middle School Program. Priority for admission is given to students eligible for the free and reduced hot lunch program. What’s It All About? The six-year program begins in the summer when students have completed the sixth grade. From mid-June to early July, program participants take part in a morning program on campus during which students explore a subject area in depth through hands-on workshops. During the school year, UW-Madison faculty, staff and graduate students work on campus with PEOPLE students providing academic skills development and tutorial services. Also, each semester, students are required to attend a Saturday Cohort meeting. Students also participate in campus orientations and cultural enrichment activities such as attending performances at the Wisconsin Theatre. 5 Upon graduation from high school, students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, who have been admitted to UW-Madison and who complete the Bridge–to–College Program will be eligible for a tuition scholarship for up to five years. NOTE: Completing the PEOPLE Program does not guarantee admission to the University of Wisconsin-Madison WHY IS IT NEEDED? Nationwide, statistics continue to show a disproportionately low percentage of students of color and low-income students enroll in and graduate from college. Numerous studies have demonstrated enrollment and graduation rates can be increased by precollege programs that (a) encourage students to aspire to opportunities available through higher education and (b) assist students in developing critical academic skills. PEOPLE challenges motivated students by providing personal discovery, academic improvement and career exploration. Throughout the program, students demonstrate an increased understanding for college life and expectations as well as improved confidence in their academic abilities and preparation. How Should O’Keeffe 6th Grade Students Apply to the PEOPLE Program? 1. Parent and student should complete the application form, which is available from the O’Keeffe Guidance office, or on the PEOPLE Program website. http://www.peopleprogram.wisc.edu 2. The student needs to write a short “autobiography” which is part of the application. 3. On or before March 15, return the application form and “autobiography” to School Counselor, Paul Chotlos, in the Guidance Office at O’Keeffe. His telephone number is 2046828. Email is: [email protected] 4. When Mr. Chotlos receives your student’s PEOPLE application, he will sign the DPI form, print a copy of your student’s transcript and contact your student’s homeroom teacher (or any other teacher that you request) to write a recommendation. When the teacher recommendation is ready, Mr. Chotlos will send the application and all supporting materials directly to the PEOPLE Program. He will call you to confirm that your student’s application packet is sent. All applications provided to the school by March 15 will be in the hands of the PEOPLE Program before their application deadline of April 1. Mr. Chotlos needs the students’ applications by March 15 because spring vacation for Madison schools is March 25-April 1. 5. You might wish to call the PEOPLE Program Office at 262-7415 to confirm their receipt of materials or to ask them any other program related questions. 6 Explore Test Results The Explore test is part of the ACT testing series that 8th graders took in December of 2012. A parent informational meeting was held on February 13, 2013. If you were unable to attend this meeting, your student will receive his/her test results and a booklet explaining how to use these test results. This information will be sent home in late February. If you have any questions about your child's performance on this test, please contact Christy Fay, Learning Coordinator, at O'Keeffe Middle School. She can be reached at 204-6835. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DROP-OFFS Remember to please have your students bring their instruments, lunches, and P.E. clothes to school. This eliminates unnecessary traffic in the office. Thank you. 7 ABC Funds, Easy as 1,2,3! The Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools’ ABC Funds provides schools an opportunity to fundraise without administrative challenges which can impede efforts. Individual schools, PTOs or booster clubs, and individuals have the opportunity to create an ABC Fund for a special program or project that benefits students. FMPS manages all of the clerical work by acknowledging donors, handling the accounting, processing and writing checks as well as helping promote fundraising efforts. This extra support gives you the ability to focus on making your fund’s goal a reality. The Foundation currently has 38 ABC funds benefitting both specific schools and district-wide endeavors. These funds support a diverse collection of programs by contributing to scholarships, capital projects, arts, and athletics. The ABC Funds provide students with a vast array of opportunities to enrich their educational experiences. For example, the FMPS Breakfast ABC Fund provides free breakfast to students who qualify for reduced-price lunch. This district-wide fund provided more than 55,000 free breakfasts during the 2011-12 school year! Randall School established an ABC Fund to renovate and maintain the Olive Jones Park Playground. The fund supports the playground which is used by Randall students and neighbors all year round. These examples demonstrate the wide-range of ABC Funds, providing new possibilities and improvements throughout the Madison Metropolitan School District. The Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools is dedicated to creating opportunities and developing partnerships between schools and the community. If you have questions regarding ABC Funds or would like to learn more about the Foundation, please visit our newly revamped website at www.fmps.org. 8 FromthePositive BehaviorCoach’s Corner Cool Tool Theme Congratulations…toour This month we will be focusing on : endofthesemesterTigerTicket DrawingWinners..
