This pronoun + verb combination often describes daily routine or personal care. Study the following pairs of sentences and the change in meaning created by the addition of the reflexive pronoun. ___ dormirse Escenas La guerra del baño 2 Shouting mirror the right Enough! After students practice this conversation in pairs, have a competition between pairs to see who wins the “Oscar” for best performance. Javier Clara 4 para bañarse. Como casi todas las mañanas, su hermana 3 está 5 esperando Javier Clara tarda mucho en salir del baño. JAVIER: (¡Pum!, ¡pum!, ¡pum!, dando con la mano en la puerta.) ¿Qué estás haciendo, Clara? Necesito usar el baño. (Silencio.) ¿No me oyes? (Gritando°.) ¿Puedes salir del baño y escucharme, por favor? CLARA: ¿Qué pasa? ¿Quieres ducharte? JAVIER: No. Quiero peinarme. CLARA: ¡Peinarte! Carlos bathes his little brother. (nonreflexive) Carlos bathes himself. (reflexive) Vamos a vestir a los niños. Vamos a vestirnos. We’re going to dress the children. (nonreflexive) We’re going to get dressed. (reflexive) Formation of reflexive verbs In a reflexive construction (the combination of reflexive pronoun and verb), the reflexive pronoun and the subject of the verb refer to the same person. (yo) (tú) (Ud., él, ella) me visto te vistes se viste (nosotros/as) (vosotros/as) (Uds., ellos, ellas) nos vestimos os vestís se visten • The reflexive pronoun is placed immediately before a single conjugated verb. Me despierto a las seis. No nos acostamos tarde. I wake up at six. We don’t go to bed late. • With verbs followed by an infinitive or a present participle (-ando/-iendo), the reflexive pronoun may be placed either before the conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive or present participle. Me tengo que levantar temprano. Tengo que levantarme temprano. I have to get up early. Linda se está divirtiendo2. Linda está divirtiéndose. Linda is having a good time. To illustrate reflexive vs. nonreflexive verbs, bring to class scissors, a bar of soap, a comb, a hairdryer, etc. Demonstrate cutting paper vs. cutting your hair, washing a piece of clothing vs. washing hands, combing/drying a student’s hair vs. your own, etc. To contrast types of pronouns, write on board Subject and next to it Reflexive and have the class fill in the columns by supplying the appropriate pronouns. To illustrate the position of reflexive pronouns, before class write on six sheets of paper one of each of the following words: debo, bañar, me, estoy, bañando, and bañé. Give to a pair of students the papers with bañé and me, and ask them to place themselves in the correct order (me first, bañé second). Then use sets of three students for the infinitive and -ndo constructions. • With reflexive verbs, use the definite article, not a possessive adjective, to refer to parts of the body or articles of clothing. Voy a cepillarme los dientes. ¿Vas a ponerte el suéter? 2 172 ciento setenta y dos Pero mamá, no quiero bañarme. Quiero jugar. Capítulo 5 I am going to brush my teeth. For example, Pedro conoce a Marta (use your students’ actual names) ➔ Pedro la conoce. To illustrate direct object pronoun placement, prior to class write on seven sheets of paper the following words: no, te, llamo, quiero, llamar, estoy, and llamando. Have three students stand in front of the class. Give them llamo, te, and no out of sequence. Have the class help them place themselves in correct word order. Remove llamo, and replace with quiero and (add another student) llamar. Again the class helps arrange students (and words) in correct order (No te quiero llamar/No quiero llamarte.). Complete the demonstration with estoy and llamando. NOTE: Bring a large red marker to write in the accent once the pronoun is attached. The words vi and vio do not have a written accent mark because a one-syllable Spanish word needs a stress mark only if there is another word like it with a different meaning. For example: si (if ) / sí (yes); el (the) / él (he). Ya que4 la religión musulmana no permite la representación de figuras humanas o de animales, los azulejos árabes utilizan sólo formas geométricas.
