ENGLISHP. 2 DEUTSCHS. 5 FRAN~AISP. 8 ESPANOLP. 12 Baluji Shrivastav's Re-Orient Baluji Shrivastav is an outstanding Indian classical musician. He has mastered the techniques of Indian classical music using the sitar as his main instrument. He is also a superb multi-instrumentalist confounding the purists by excelling amongst other things as a percussionist and vocalist. His fertile and poetic imagination uses music as its expression, and for him music is a universal language. This album arose out of the close musical relationship that has grown between Baluji and the other musicians. Linda Shanovitch and Chris Conway and Baluji are the core of a group called Jazz Orient who have had various guest artists performing with them including Clive Bell and Gerry Hunt. Three principles guide their music: 1. The exploration of different compositional techniques - 2. Interacting with other musicians from different traditions - 3. Improvising. Clive and Linda have also performed with Baluji in some of his compositions 'Portraits of the Dark' and 'Pushpanjali' which are contemporary works based primarily on classical Indian music. Baluji and Gerry have worked many times in the Grand Union Orchestra. Baluji and Partho Mukherjee have given national and international tours of classical Indian music together. ~. • So over the years they have grown to understand each other 1IIi.~S'Im,~rJJI musically. They like each other and each other's music so that •.• music-making becomes very natural and effortless when playing together. The musicians don't become entrenched in technique, but let go of dogma and play from the heart. That is what the band would like the listeners to do: Let go of dogma and listen with the heart. Counting human voice and percussions as one instrument each, there are 23 different musical instruments to be heard on this album. A veritable feast of sounds. There are compositions in 3/4, 4/4, 6/4, 9/8, 14/8, and 16/8. Rhythmically there is much to explore. Each of the musicians has renewed the concept of the orient in these pieces and reoriented themselves to each other. Instruments: Bansuri - a northern Indian transverse bamboo flute. Darbuka - a goblet-shaped, single-headed Arabian drum. Played under the arm, resting on the player's thigh. Dilruba - a fretted, long-necked fiddle from Afghanistan or north India with a skin sound table. It is primarily used to accompany popular or religious songs. Ghatam - clay (terra cotta) pot drum with a wide belly and narrow mouth. It is played with hands, wrists, fingertips and nails. Kalimba - an African "thumb piano': 2 Mandozither - a custom built cross between a zither (with about 20 strings) and a mandolin. It has the flat, triangular body of a zither with the neck of a mandolin coming out of it. Pakhavaj - a tuned, finger-played double-headed drum of north and central India with an elongated barrel shape. It has been in use in Indian musical tradition for over two millennia. Tabla - a pair of small hand-played kettledrums, treble and bass, of north India. Tanpura - an Indian long-necked plucked drone lute resembling the sitar with four metal strings. It is used in both classical and folk music. Sitar - a large, long-necked, plucked lute with a gourd body and movable frets. 1. Bird Dancer (Chris Conway) This unusual composition by Chris Conway has a cunning 37 beat motif at the end of each theme cycle, and was inspired by South Indian classical music after he toured with Pushkala Gopal and Unnikrishnan's dance company and Dr. l. Subramaniam (to whom the piece is dedicated) in a production which featured dancers portraying the flight of birds. 8aluji Shrivastav - sitar, tabla; Linda Shanovitch - voice, ghungru (ankle bells); Chris Conway - keyboards, tin whistle, percussion, sampled bass; Gerry Hunt - soprano saxophone; Clive 8ell - bansuri 2. Tarana 14 (Baluji Shrivastav) A Tarana is a song containing words which have no meaning today but were originally derived from Persian Sufi sacred words. Baluji's Tarana composition is in char tool (14 beat time cycle) in Raag Adana Bahar - a raga associated with midnight. This piece features exchanges between Gerry's sax and Clive's bansuri and an exciting tabla solo by Partho. Baluji Shrivastav - dilruba; Linda Shanovitch - voice, tanpura; Chris Conway - keyboards; Gerry Hunt - soprano saxophone, bass; Clive Bell - bansuri; Partho Mukherjee - tabla 3. Pani Hari (trod; arr. Gerry Hunt) A spontaneous improvisation with Chris, Baluji, Gerry, Clive and Partho. The lilt of the rhythm and the use of the ghatam clay water pot and the watery sounds of flutes, mandozither and kalimba suggested the title. In India Pani Hari is the woman who distributes water to everyone. Baluji Shrivastav - darbuka; Chris Conway - kalimba, mandozither; Gerry Hunt - flute; Clive Bell - bansuri; Partho Mukherjee - ghatam 4. Zigmondi (Chris Conway) This theme by Chris Conway has been arranged here in 6/4 time in the first section where Baluji's dilruba and soulful voice are featured. Then, in the second section, in a fast 9/8 rhythm inspired by Turkish music. This section is dedicated to musicians Okay Temoz and Sakari Kukko. The title comes from the Hungarian Agnes Zsigmondi, whose singing also inspired the melody. Baluji Shrivastav - dilruba, voice, pakhavaj, darbuka; Linda 5hanovitch - voice; Chris Conway - voice, keyboards, sampled bass; Gerry Hunt - classical guitar,' Clive Bell - bansuri; Partho Mukherjee - tabla 3 S. Child ofthe Emerald Air (Chris Conway) This is another composition of two halves by Chris Conway. The first half is inspired by the land of his grandfather, Ireland. The second half was inspired by Indian folk music. Chris plays Irish tin whistles (at one point playing two at once) and a large aluminium low D whistle. Baluji Shrivastav - ghatam; Chris Conway - tin whistles, low 0 whistle, acoustic 9-string guitar; Gerry Hunt - violin 6. Taal manjari - Flowering ot Rhythm (Baluji Shrivastav) A feast of percussion from two percussion masters. A stunning composition in 16 beats. The unusual theme is played on tabla tarang in Raag Chandan Manjari and is an original raga invented by Baluji. The thrilling interaction between Hossam and Baluji gradually builds to a climax. Note the ghungru sounding like chirruping birds. Baluji Shrivastav - keyboard, pakhavaj, ghungru, bells, samples; Hossam Ramzy _ darbuka, duf 7. Karuna Carina (B. Shrivastav / C. Conway / G.Hunt) Baluji and Chris have often found the combination of sitar with 9-string guitar a successful one. The opportunity of an improvisation including these and Gerry's classical guitar was not to be missed. 'Karuna' means 'compassion' in Hindi and 'Carina' means 'beloved' in Spanish. Baluji Shrivastav - sitar; Chris Conway - acoustic 9-string guitar; Gerry Hunt _ classical guitar 8. untorgotten Days (Chris Conway) Chris Conway wrote this and was originally inspired by Indian Ras & Garba dance rhythms and melodies associated with the Hindu Navrathri festival. The composition also has something of the influence of Brazilian music and features a wonderfully fluid sax solo from Gerry. The title refers to the days of one's childhood. Baluji Shrivastav - sitar; Linda Shanovitch - voice; Chris Conway - keyboards, voice, sampled bass; Gerry Hunt - soprano saxophone, classical guitar, percussion; Partho Mukherjee - tabla 9. In the Bamboo Forest (Clive Bell) A spontaneous moment of peace featuring Chris, Gerry and Clive's flutes (kalimba added later) evoking thoughts of the Far East. Chris Conway - Chinese dizi (bamboo flute), kalimba; Gerry Hunt - soprano recorder; Clive Sell -large Indian bansuri 10. Tarana 16 (Baluji Shrivastav) This composition in teen tal (16 beats time cycle) has been ingeniously expanded and arranged by Saluji giving everyone a chance to shine. From the slow 'alaap' movement, as each section unfolds, every musician gets a space in which to put something of their own. It is in Raag Yaman, traditionally associated with the first quarter of the evening after sunset. 4 Saluji Shrivastav - sitar, voice, pakhavaj; Linda Shanovitch - voice, tanpura, ghungru; Chris Conway - keyboards, sampled bass; Gerry Hunt - classical guitar; Clive Sell - bansuri, voice; Partho Mukherjee - tabla 11. Garuda (Linda Shanovitch) The subject of birds returns, bringing us full circle. This beautiful melody by Linda is inspired by the Hindu bird god Garuda, carrier of Lord Vishnu. As well as featuring Linda's stunning voice and Clive's wonderfully rich large flute, this piece features a delightful interplay between Baluji's sitar and Chris's electric piano. Baluji Shrivastav - Sitar, Tabla; Linda Shanovitch - Gesang, Ghungru (Fullschellen); Chris Conway - Keyboards, Tin Whistle, Perkussion, Sample-8a/3; Gerry Hunt - Sopransaxophon; Clive Bell - 8ansuri 2. Baluji Shrivastav - Keyboard, Pakhavaj, Ghungru, Glocken, Samples; Hossam Ramzy - Darbuka, Ouf 7. Karuna Carina (B. Shrivastav / C. Conway / G.
