MUST Sandwich Making Comes to A Close
The last MUST Summer Sandwich Making session
will be held on Monday, July 28 at 4:30 pm in the
CKS Cafeteria. For those of you who haven’t joined
us, this is a great way for parishioners of all ages to
get involved in supplying lunches to the
impoverished children in metro Atlanta. Below is a
an excerpt written by Carol Hunt, long-time
parishioner and volunteer for MUST, which chronicles just a part of a day of
delivering the sandwiches.
“I saw her silhouette from a distance running toward our summer lunch van.

As she came near, our eyes met. Drops of sweat were running down her
beautiful cheeks and she was breathless. She had a big, green sack swung over
her left shoulder. I responded with a hug and she began to share her morning.
“My sister and I had to walk to the laundry place this morning while my
brother stayed home to watch my little sister,” she told me. “We had three
bags to do. Because we remembered it was Friday, we ran all the way home.
We didn’t want to miss choosing our books and lunches, and see, on the way
home, I stopped and picked this flower for you, to say thank you for bringing
our lunches.”

Our Statue of St. Anne: Feast of Saints Joachim and
Anne
The flower garland above our statue of Saint Anne is in
honor of the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne which
was celebrated on Saturday, July 26. Saint Anne was
the mother of Mary, and the grandmother of Jesus.
Joachim was her husband.
History of Our Statue to St. Anne: The first Rector of
the Cathedral, Monsignor Joseph E. Moylan, had a
special devotion to St. Anne. He requested that a
statue to her be placed in a prominent place in the
Cathedral. The statue was donated to the Cathedral by
one of our benefactors, Laura Payne Smith as a tribute
to grandmothers, as she was one at the time. Today,
Laura’s daughter, Joan Smith Zillessen, recalls that Monsignor Moylan selected
the statue for her mother to make sure it would complement the decor.

Friends, At the beginning of the month the CTK Youth Ministry Team invited you to dream with us as we asked: What would it look like for our entire parish to invest in the 400 plus active CTK teens and those outside of our walls? What would the impact be on their lives and the life of Christ’s Church? With these questions we invited you to dream with us by taking part in our Youth365 fundraiser for CTK Youth Ministry with the goal of raising over $66,000 by 365 donors contributing between $1 and $365 each by the beginning of August. I am proud to say that we have already had over $15,000 donated from nearly 90 generous donors! As exciting as this is, it also means that we still have a ways to go. As small as it may seem to each individual donor, a parish rallied behind these teens has the ability to transform the lives of hundreds of teens, their schools, homes families, community, and city. Would you consider investing in the spiritual lives of our communities teens by making a donation? Your donation will go directly to enhancing our 3 youth ministry experiences, teen leadership development, and life changing retreats and missions. Your investment will bear fruit in the lives of CTK teens! I’d encourage you to visit the Youth365 Big Board in the gathering space between the Cathedral and Kenny Hall or CTKyouth.com. Choose one of the remaining post‐its and take home and envelope and do‐
nor form. Each donation amount corresponds to a day of the next year when the CTK Youth Ministry family will pray for you and your intentions. Donations are tax deductible and can be made in honor of your own children or other loved ones. You may also choose an amount corresponding to an important anniversary, birthday, or other meaningful date. For more information on Youth365 or to make a donation, visit www.ctkyouth.com or the Big Board soon. Thank you for dreaming with us. Thank you for helping transform the lives of our teens. She reached for my hand and
placed in it a yellow, wild
dandelion. She carefully chose the
books she wanted and I handed her
a lunch sack.
“Let me walk home with you,” I
offered.
The short trip to her apartment was
a pathway of broken bottles and
clutter. When I entered the chipped
door, dangling on its hinges, I was
greeted by squeals of joy as her
brother and sisters rushed to receive
our gifts. Carefully I placed the
lunches in a row on a small table. I
looked around the room and saw
the table and three chairs, no other
furniture. In the corner were four
large, cardboard boxes, and on each
box, printed in bold letters, was the
name of each child in the family.
The three laundry bags had been
placed in the center of the room.
Two children began going through
the laundry, carefully folding the
items and placing them in the
cardboard boxes. As I watched, I
thought of their mother who, with
no dresser drawers for her
children’s clothes, had brought
order out of the confusion with the
simple cardboard boxes.
As I was leaving, I reached into my
pocket and felt the damp petals of
the yellow dandelion. I smiled as I
thought, “out of the sorrow of
poverty comes the joy of hope.”

Summertime Stress Slowing You Down?
We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts,
struggles, crises, and problems don't take a vacation. Difficulties may seem even
worse during the summer because everyone else is enjoying life while you are
feeling down. If you are experiencing a difficult time--emotionally, spiritually, or
relationally--you don't have to suffer alone. Stephen Ministers are ready to listen,
care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and provide one-to-one
Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing. It's free and
it’s confidential. It will make a difference in your life!

the memories of their loved one. This series uses “The New Day Journal; A
Journey from Grief to Healing” by Mauryeen O’Brien. The workbook cost $10.50
and can be purchased at the first session. The next series begins Monday, August
18 at 7 pm in the Media Center in Christ the King School.

CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE KING
PRAYING PACEM IN TERRIS: We
must add, therefore, that it is in the
nature of the common good that every
single citizen has the right to share in
it—although in different ways,
depending on his tasks, merits and
circumstances. Hence every civil
authority must strive to promote the
common good in the interest of all,
without favoring any individual
citizen or category of citizen. As Pope
Leo XIII insisted: "The civil power
must not be subservient to the
advantage of any one individual, or of
some few persons; inasmuch as it was
established for the common good of
all."
Nevertheless, considerations of justice
and equity can at times demand that
those in power pay more attention to
the weaker members of society, since
these are at a disadvantage when it
comes to defending their own rights
and asserting their legitimate interests.

by hand by our members and the patients are always so grateful for this gift while

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I
hope and pray that you feel welcomed by our parish
community and that your spiritual and pastoral needs will
be met.
We are a very active parish with 5,500 families and over one
hundred ministries. We encourage our members to share
their gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Our mission statement is to “Know, Love and Serve as Jesus
Did”. This is the mission of each disciple of Christ and, if
you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or
email us.
May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
