Wow! I can hardly believe that we
have been in school for four months
and that the new year is quickly approaching. As we enter the holiday
season, the winter break, and those
long, cold, and snowy winter months,
we continue with the excitement of
learning.
As the winter weather arrives, please
make sure to review Fairfax County
Public Schools’ inclement weather policy. Remember that on days
when Weyanoke opens late,
breakfast is not served. When
schools open two hours late, the front
office opens at 9:30 a.m. Please
make a plan for your children to follow during late openings and school
closings.

A Message from your PTA President
Weyanoke Parents, Teachers, and Students,
Winter is around the corner! The first part of the
year has gone by so fast, it’s amazing that winter
break begins in a few days. We have had a great
year so far.
To recap a few activities, our Family Science Night
was on October 1st, and even though it was a rainy
night, families still came out for some scientific exploration and fun. A big THANK YOU goes out to all
our teachers who volunteered at this event.
Our Lavender’s fundraiser helped to raise almost
$3,000 dollars for the PTA! Congratulations to the
students who won a limousine lunch for their sales,
which included a tour of some Washington, D.C.
monuments!
Our Fall Book Fair produced over $5,700 in sales!
Nearly $1,500 of this will go to the PTA, but most
importantly, our students were able to obtain a
great selection of books. Thanks to all our volunteers who helped make this a success.
Laura Murray, author of Gingerbread Man on the
Loose, recently visited the school. Students and
teachers loved the program, and Ms. Murray told us
how much she enjoyed Weyanoke! The PTA was
glad to be able to sponsor this event for our students.
PTA General Membership Meeting
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 21,
2016 at 6:30 p.m.

Afterschool Clubs
The Fall Session of Kids In Motion has been going
great. Flyers will be sent home early in the new
year for the next session. Flyers will also be sent
out for Bricks 4 Kidz, the Lego construction program. We look forward to having both of these programs in the Winter!
Family Market Nights
Our next Family Market Day will be on January 14,
2016. To volunteer, please contact PTA Secretary,
Dorothy Walsh at [email protected].

As the PTA is entirely made up of volunteers, the
amount of programs that we are able to offer depends upon the size and participation of our membership. Everyone putting in a little goes a LONG
way for Weyanoke. The cost is minimal, your time
and talents are priceless.
CALLING ALL LEADERS!!!
Please consider serving on the PTA Board. Many of
you are already leaders, as the essence of leadership is service to others. Any of the PTA Board
members will be happy to answer any questions you
may have and we would welcome anyone to sit in
on our Board meetings to learn more about the
work that we do. Your decision to help lead the
PTA will help to ensure the future success and wellbeing of your children.

Padres, Maestros, y Estudiantes de Weyanoke:
¡El invierno se acerca! La primera parte de este año
escolar se ha ido rápido, y es increíble que el invierno comenzará en pocos días: en lo que ha transcurrido hemos obtenido logros.
Resumiendo algunas actividades, nuestra Noche de
Ciencias fue el 1ro de octubre y aunque estuvo

lluvioso, las familias asistieron de todas maneras
para disfrutar de la exploración científica y diversión de sus hijos. Expresamos nuestros agradecimientos a los maestros que sirvieron de voluntarios en este evento. ¡GRACIAS!
Nuestro recaudo de fondos con Lavender ayudó a
recoger casi $3,000 para el PTA. ¡Felicitaciones a
los estudiantes que ganaron un almuerzo en limosina por sus ventas, que incluirá un paseo a
algunos de los monumentos de Washington, D.C.!
¡La Feria del Libro de Otoño produjo más de
$5,700 en ventas! Casi $1,500 sobre esta venta

The next drawing for lunch with the principal will be Friday, January 8, 2016. You can find Box Tops on hundreds of participating products throughout your grocery
store. When you find one, simply put the student’s name
and teacher’s name on the back or tape/glue several to
a collection sheet. Once you have done this, turn them
in to school by February 3rd. Good luck and happy clipping!

Welcome to Ms. Jordan
Please join us in welcoming Ms. Eris Jordan to Weyanoke’s front office. She is very excited to be part of
our Woodchuck family. Ms. Jordan is working diligently
to learn names and get familiar with our students, staff
members, and families. Say hi next time you stop by
the main office.
Farewell to Ms. Schwartz
We were sad to say goodbye to Ms. Schwartz, who
worked in the main office for many years. We are very
thankful for her service at Weyanoke. Our best wishes
in her new position; she will be greatly missed by the
entire Woodchuck community.

Weyanoke Night at Chuck E. Cheese
The PTA will be sponsoring Weyanoke Night at Chuck
E. Cheese on Thursday, February 4, 2016 from
3:30 p.m.—closing. Weyanoke will receive 15% of
the total sales from the evening, so treat yourself and
your family to a night of pizza and games. No cooking
or dishes and you will be helping our school. It’s going
to be a great night! So join us at the Fairfax Chuck E.

verify all absences. Leave a message in either English or Spanish.
Your child will be considered unexcused until we
hear from you. More than five unexcused absences in a quarter will be reported to the attendance officer.

Activities that Keep Your Kids Learning

Winter Word Search
Winter break is a time of family togetherness and celebration. Here is a list of some fun and educational activities to do with your elementary schoolers so that
winter break isn't a "break" away from learning!






Volunteer or Donate. Teach your children an
importance lesson in human kindness by giving
back to the community. You can have them help
out at a nursing home or donate a gift to a child or
family in need. There are lots of ways to give back
to the community and show your children how it
feels to help someone out in need. Not only does
this teach them how good it feels to help someone
out, it also can teach them the value of what they
have.
Write a Holiday Story. Have your children come
up with their own Holiday story. For the younger
ones, help them to write it or have them make up
a story with pictures. Put on a "play" where they
"perform" their story.
Create a Holiday Budget. Have your children
create a holiday gift budget. Teach them what a
budget is and the reason for one. Give them a total
amount they can spend. Have them write up a list
of all the people they are buying gifts for. Have
them look through store ads to help with ideas for
gifts and prices. Also, make sure they know the
value of a homemade gift as well to help them not
go over budget.
Make Holiday Decorations. It's always fun to
decorate for the holidays! Have the kids design
and create their own ideas for holiday decorations
and let them decorate around the house.
Create a Winter Weather Journal. Have the
kids keep a journal to record the daily weather
happenings. Have them write down how much (if
any) snow fell, the hours the snow fell, weather
predictions, etc.
Take a Winter Walk. Dress warm and take the
kids on a winter walk. Have them look around and
see what kind of birds are here in the winter.
Teach them about migration and hibernation. If
you don't know all the answers to all their questions, go on a "research hunt" at your library or on
the internet.
Winter breaks and family time can be great opportunities to create beautiful memories while teaching your
children about the world around them. Enjoy!
