FEBRERO 10, 2013
FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
O COME, LET US WORSHIP GOD AND BOW LOW BEFORE THE
GOD WHO MADE US, FOR HE IS THE LORD OUR GOD.
PSALM 95:6-7
Isaiah, a man of unclean lips, beholds the Lord’s glory in the temple and is
sent on mission (1, Ps). Simon, a sinner, responds to the mission of Jesus by
becoming a disciple (3). Paul, the persecutor, speaks of his call to preach
nothing but Christ crucified and risen (2).
FIRST READING — ISAIAH 6:1-2
Isaiah is called to be a messenger for the Lord
and responds, “Send me!”
RESPONSORIAL PSALM — PSALM 138
In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.
SECOND READING — 1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-11
Paul reminds us of the gospel he preached
through which we are saved, if we believe it.
GOSPEL — LUKE 5:1-11
Jesus directs Simon to take his boat
into deep water for a miraculous catch of fish.
PLEASE
PRAY for the repose of the soul of the sister of Bev Heimsoth, Nelda
Kountz, who passed into eternal life on January 23, 2013.
PLEASE PRAY for the repose of the soul of the son of Rose Cerny, Otto Cerny,
who passed into eternal life on February 1, 2013.
PLEASE PRAY for the repose of the soul of the brother of Mollie Poye, Michael
LePert, who passed into eternal life on February 2, 2013.
PLEASE
PRAY for the repose of the soul of the wife of Don Baier, Mary Louise
Baier, who passed into eternal life on February 6, 2013.
T REASURE S
FROM OUR TRADITIONS
Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes
this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a
symbol of purity and a reminder of God’s promise that our sins will be made
white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a
festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to
repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking
to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is
expected to seek out someone and “clear the air” by asking for understanding
for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year.
Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you
follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 5, and Yom
Kippur September 14. A conversation with some Jewish friends or neighbors
about their experience of a season of repentance may be a blessing on your

Lent.
GOD’S SUMMONS
Confronted with God’s power
and majesty, the first response of the
prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge
his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am
doomed! For I am a man of unclean
lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with
his empty fishing nets dramatically
filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell
to his knees and cried out, “Depart
from me, Lord, for I am a sinful
man.”
Next, Peter got up. He docked
his boats then left to follow Jesus.
Isaiah also had a dramatic change
of heart. When he heard the Lord
say, “Whom shall I send? Who will
go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I
am, send me.”
We are summoned daily by the
Risen Lord. We are reminded of the
saving power of the gospel and
know in our heart of hearts that, as
St. Paul wrote, believing in anything
else won’t lead to anything.
What will it take for you to move
past your sinfulness? What will it take
for you to get off your knees? What
will it take for you to bring to dock
what is unimportant and to accept
your call to be God’s messenger?

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
Catholic Schools Week ended with a bang when the final
assembly included a Flash Mob by the teachers and administrators! Mr. Wilburn rapped original lyrics to "St. Joseph Style" and the teachers performed a fabulous routine
choreographed by Mrs. Shannon Johnson. Father John
loved that the words included, "Don't forget...Mass is on
Sunday!" Students loved seeing their usually more serious
teachers put themselves out there for the students' fun. Is
your child getting faith as part of his or her everyday
school education? Registration is going on now!
Registration
Have you considered a Catholic education for your PreK
3 through 7th grade children? St. Joseph offers all the
academic subjects that public school students have, as
well as phys. ed., music, technology, art, library and
Spanish. Middle school students also have Latin! What is
most important is that they also have religion as part of
the regular curriculum. Students have Mass two days a
week, morning prayer all together three days a week, religion instruction, and morals and values reinforced
throughout the curriculum.
St. Joseph Catholic School began registration two weeks
ago for current families and newly entering Catholic families. Registration for all interested families (including nonCatholics) begins on Monday, February 11, and names
are taken on a first-come, first-served basis until classes
are full. If you have a PreK child, a Kindergartener not
currently in our PreK program, or you are looking to register your children who are currently in other schools in
the area, please give us a call at 442-4554 to schedule a
tour and have questions answered. We look forward to
hearing from you!

Loving the Poor
5 February 2013 – St. Agatha
Fr. John K. Antony
Jesus said – no, He commanded – “I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I
was thirsty and you gave me to drink…” (Mt. 25:35). Loving our neighbor in need
is not an “extra” or “bonus” of Christianity; it is Christianity. If you need another
Scripture, read the story of the Good Samaritan, who stopped to succor a complete stranger waylaid by robbers (Lk. 10-25-37). Still don’t believe me? Read
about what happened to the rich man and Lazarus; you don’t want to be that rich
man (Lk. 16:19-31). Jesus leaves no wiggle room: our eternal salvation depends
on how we care for the poor.
In recent weeks several people – apparently poor and in need – have approached parishioners here at St. Joseph soliciting help. Perhaps inspired by
these same Scriptures, these parishioners generously gave them some money.
One compassionate couple even gave one man a ride in their car. This sincere
charity may well have been what Jesus wanted them to do. Each person is free to
follow the conclusions of his or her conscience.
My job is to help you form your conscience, so consider also the following
facts:
1. St. Joseph Church gives 10% of our income to charity every year, which last
year totaled $148,240. Indeed, I sign a check for $2,000 to Community
Emergency Outreach (CEO) every month. St. Joseph Parish exercises a vigorous preferential option for the poor.
2. My personal policy is never give anyone cash, no matter how sad their story.
If they are hungry, I will buy them a Happy Meal; if they need gas, I’ll pay for
half a tank; if they need a place to stay I recommend Salvation Army, or on
very rare occasions, I’ve paid for a hotel room – but always gave the money
to the hotel attendant. But do you know what happens? Invariably, the person in need turns me down. Apparently, the cash they wanted was not for
food or gas, but more likely for alcohol or cigarettes or drugs. Giving some7

QUINTO DOMINGO
DEL TIEMPO
ORDINARIO
one cash seems like an easy fix, but that rarely solves that person’s real
problems.
3. If someone approaches you on church property, I ask that you not give them
cash. Instead, tell them: “We’re happy you’re here! We’ve been waiting for
you! Our pastor would be happy to help you, his name is Fr. Ravi!” Seriously, please ask them to speak with me. But also inform them that we ask
people not to solicit on church property.
4. I’m learning that poverty has a certain “relativity.” After a week in Honduras, helping people who’ve never worn shoes before, I’ve learned there’s
“poverty,” and then there’s POVERTY. I hope that doesn’t close my eyes or
heart to the local poor, but rather I hope it actually opens my eyes and heart
even wider, so I help those who are truly in need.
5. Last Sunday a family stood at the doors of the church holding a sign asking
for help. When we asked them to come in, they quickly climbed into their
car and appeared to leave. Later we found them asking for donations as parishioners exited the parking lot after Mass. We informed the Fayetteville
PD and learned they were operating a scam. Many parishioners gave them
money, but I wonder if that helped “the poor” Jesus was thinking of in Mt.
25 and Lk. 10 and Lk. 16.
6. Whenever someone approaches me for help I always try to guess their age.
Maybe this person is 30 years old or 40 years old. So, that means for 30 or
40 years they have survived: finding food, clothing and shelter. That also
means that if I cannot (or choose not to) help them today, they will continue
to find food, clothing and shelter for many more years. But some people’s
stories are so compelling that we feel if we don’t help them at that very moment, they will collapse and die at our feet. But that’s not true. That
thought calms my conscience, especially when they turn down my offer of a
Happy Meal or a night at the Salvation Army. There’s “poverty,” and then
there’s POVERTY.
Jesus said, “The poor you will always have with you” (Mt. 26:11). So, let us love
them the best we can, and not neglect them in their need, whether they live in
Honduras or in Hoboken. After all, we don’t really have a choice.

ENTRANDO EN LA CUARESMA...
CAMPAÑA NACIONAL
DE ORACIÓN
¡USTED puede ayudar a
salvar vidas!

COMER CARNE.
a Dios.
(Mt 6,6).
