Page Two December 6, 2015 PASTOR’S COLUMN and you shall receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7) DECEMBER CONFESSIONS “Ask An infant knows how to ask for the most basic of life’s needs—food and warmth. They may not know that at the same time they are asking for human comfort, protection, and safety. All they know is the unidentified yet clear needs of their new environment of life. Children are more specific about their needs. Now it’s not just generic food and warmth but what kind of food, or selecting the clothes for their warmth. Children are becoming more aware of their environment and are forming relationships based on their own personalities and experiences. Teens do the same but in a more focused growth toward independence and identity, now being able to choose where and how they spend their time. Adults do so in autonomy and with full freedom of choice. Each era of our lives has a unique way of seeking the Lord’s protection. The Son of God promises that what we ask for will be given to us. God will only give good, not evil, so these words of Jesus are of great promise to all people. We continue to knock at the door for peace among nations and an end of war and violence of every kind. We continually ask him for healing and strength for ourselves, family, and friends in our human frailty. We seek his wisdom and grace in our lives that we may see his will and follow it completely. St. Paul tells us that as children we thought and acted as children, but as adults we put childish ways aside. Jesus in this passage reminds us of the eternal goodness and providence of our loving Father in our lives. As we continue our Advent journey, may we grow to a more perfect belief in Emmanuel, God-with-us, each moment of our lives. ~Fr. Page Three Second Sunday of Advent This Tuesday, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis will open the “Holy Door” in Saint Peter’s Basilica, symbolically opening the Jubilee Year of Mercy. In today’s scriptures, Baruch confidently anticipates God’s healing of the brokenness of humanity, and Paul sees God bringing our discernment, knowledge, and love to fulfillment. Our experience of life and of ourselves can make such prophecies seem wildly optimistic, even hopelessly naïve. Pope Francis challenges us to live this Jubilee Year as a graced time, when God’s mercy reawakens our enthusiasm to live our baptismal call as gospel people, our hope renewed and ourselves recommitted to selfless charity. Notice that in Luke’s Gospel today, God bypasses the religious elite and politically powerful to speak to a humble believer in the barren desert the saving word that will transform history. So God’s mercy continues to accomplish humanity’s salvation in and through ordinary, flawed, and least likely instruments—even us. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Mary was created by God without the inheritance of original sin. She is full of grace. This is why she is called the Immaculate Conception. Jesus was conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit– this is called the virgin birth. Elizabeth, too, experiences a miracle when she becomes pregnant in spite of her old age. These miracles can encourage us to strong, hope-filled faith. In order to make this event possible, we are in need of crafters! TOYS FOR TOTS! We join with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to collect new, unwrapped toys during this month. The toys will help children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas. Please leave your donations at the exits of the church or the Parish Center Office. Friday, December 11th 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in the SJS Courtyard. But, WE NEED YOUR HELP!
