MAP develops design research studios for Mexican, US, and Canadian schools, providing orientation, experienced instructors and other services such as classrooms and studio space. Educación Continua is the area of Universidad Iberoamericana in charge of the development of graduate programs. The Mexico Architecture Program is a space to develop and share academic and research experiences. It is aimed for North American and European institutions with courses that provide the mechanism for doing research and studying key issues affecting the future of the built environment in highly populated territories, through the study of Mexico City’s highly dense, diverse, and complex scenarios; exploring social, technological, economic, environmental, and political domains. We are building a net with foreign and local universities to jointly develop architecture research projects. This network include partners from other countries, as we are especially interested in focusing on local and global points of view. We are also interested in designing the future of a professional environment in a global context, creating mechanisms to share tasks and to work in distance through digital systems in a worldwide team. Background § The Mexican Architecture Program Center for Architecture and Urban Studies is based on the experience started in 2001 with the Fundacio Politecnica de Catalunya-BAC in Barcelona in association with Clemson University, Texas A&M, the University of Texas San Antonio in USA; the University of Montreal in Canada; ITESM and UIA in Mexico. The Director, Juan Carlos Sánchez Tappan, as Faculty of the BAC, organized and taught Term Abroad Programs from 2001 to 2009 academic sessions in Barcelona. During three months, their students had the opportunity to gain academic credits for their curricula. § With the University of Calgary EVDS Barcelona Autum term-abroad program and Carleton University term abroad program in Barcelona, where Juan Carlos Sánchez Tappan was regular studio course instructor and lecturer. Universidad Iberoamericana Prol. Paseo de la reforma 880 Lomas de Santa Fe, 01219, México DF MexicoArchitecture Program Center for Architecture Studies [email protected] § During summer of 2001, the Program Director worked on an academic agreement between Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey and Fundacio Politecnica de Catalunya (FPC). In 2010, between Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA) and Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Oriente (ITESO) and ELISAVA. In 2011, between UIA and FPC/ Metropolis. § He has been Co-director of Visiting Universities Mexico summer-winter term abroad programs in Barcelona with Institute of Advanced Architecture Catalunya in association with UIA/ ITESM Queretaro/ UDLAP and Fundacio Enric Miralles since 2013; with ELISAVA in 2011 and 2012 in association with UIA/ITESO/Anáhuac Norte and ITESM Querétaro. http://www.iaac.net/educational-programs/mexico-summer-school-2015-42, http://www.fundacioenricmiralles.com/talleres/ § For the last 14 years, our Program Director has been directly involved in conducting and collaborating in undergraduate and postgraduate programs with prestige institutions, universities, and clusters in Mexico, USA, Canada, Spain, UK, and Taiwan with ample experience in rethinking agendas, designing syllabi, leading seminars and studio programs. Objectives or goals § Develop an international synergy between students from different parts of the world in an interdisciplinary architecture environment, using Mexico City as a platform and bridge between North America and Latin America. § Establish different collaborations between Mexico City’s public and private academic and non-academic institutions and foreign ones in order to promote common future projects within the frame of architecture teaching and research as well as enhance students and faculty international mobility. § Promote graduate research programs amongst universities from different countries. § Establish international standards for the architecture teaching in order to recognize a unique credit system and to facilitate the sharing of experiences abroad to all the academic members. § Generate experiences that tend to systemize the non-traditional architecture teaching methods, especially non-presence ones, thinking in a future On line Campus and a Digital Research Network to teach and research architecture and urbanism through the Internet. Universidad Iberoamericana Prol. Paseo de la reforma 880 Lomas de Santa Fe, 01219, México DF MexicoArchitecture Program Center for Architecture Studies [email protected] Why Mexico? Mexico is back in the international scene and its economy has become an emerging market in Latin-America. After last year’s Presidential elections, the current political period is paved for the next six years, and Mexico offers an exotic, robust, and vibrant promising study-abroad destination because of its geographical and cultural proximity to the United States. Why Mexico City? Since Miguel A. Mancera took office as Mexico Cityʼs Mayor, the political metropolitan agenda has continued to be clear and successful as it had been during the last six years. It continuous to have strong and positive impact upon the transformation, renewal, and recovery of critical areas of the city, landscapes, public spaces, housing, public transportation, and an urban and architectural sustainable policy led by SEDUVI, Housing and Urban development bureau. It is very likely that this policy will go on since most Mexican institutions are staffed with the same personnel, who are pursuing the same goals. As the result of a central government, combined with a healthy economy, public and private housing investments, transportation, public spaces, security, and the ongoing recovery of problematic areas in the city, Mexico City has become the safest city in the country. Additionally, there is a growing tendency, amongst different disciplines, that define Mexico City as the “Epicenter of North Latin America.” Mexico City, an ideal laboratory. Its density, population, diversity and complexity make of Mexico City, D.F. an ideal laboratory for other North American cities that will increase its population significantly in the following years. We are convinced Mexico City is the best option to educate and train students to be socially responsible citizens, who will practice and fit well in a global world. Practice will be highly interdisciplinary, teams will be assembled for specific projects, and design will not be limited to the scale of buildings. Universidad Iberoamericana Prol.
