Introducción
Situada al sur de la Comunidad Valenciana, la ciudad de Alicante se halla en
el centro de la bahía que lleva el mismo
nombre, limitada por los cabos de La
Huerta al norte y Santa Pola al sur. Con
unos 315.000 habitantes y un término
municipal de 201,3 km2 de superficie,
se trata de la segunda ciudad más
importante de la Comunidad Valenciana, siendo capital de la provincia que
lleva su nombre; una ciudad enfocada
a los sectores industrial, comercial y de
servicios.

Su condición de ciudad bañada por
el Mediterráneo la dota de un clima
privilegiado caracterizado por unos
inviernos suaves y unos veranos cálidos, con una temperatura media anual
superior a los 18º C y cerca de 3.000
horas de sol al año.
Alicante es, sin duda, un claro exponente de ciudad mediterránea, con
una vitalidad que marca el carácter de
sus habitantes, siempre abiertos a un
visitante que en ningún momento se
siente forastero en ella.

Introduction
Located in the south of the Region of
Valencia, the city of Alicante lies in the
centre of the bay of the same name,
flanked by the capes Cabo La Huerta to
the north and Santa Pola to the south.
With around 315,000 inhabitants and a
municipal area of 201.3 km2, Alicante is
the second largest city in the Region of
Valencia and the capital of the province
of Alicante. The city’s economy is based
on industry, business and the service
sectors.
Lapped by the Mediterranean Sea,
it has an exceptional climate that is
characterised by mild winters and hot
summers, with an average annual temperature of over 18ºC and around 3,000
hours of sunshine per year.
Alicante is undoubtedly a prime example
of a Mediterranean city, with a zest for
life that is reflected in the personality of
its inhabitants who always make visitors
feel welcome and completely at home.

Aeropuerto Internacional de El Altet.
Se encuentra a tan sólo 12 km del
centro de la ciudad. Situado entre
Alicante y Elche, su acceso se realiza
por la A7 y la N332. Es uno de los más
importantes del país, y cuenta con
conexiones directas con 14 destinos
en España, 59 en la Unión Europea y
12 destinos fuera de la UE, volando en
total a 20 países diferentes.
Dentro de España, el aeropuerto de
El Altet se encuentra comunicado mediante conexión directa con Asturias,
Barcelona, Bilbao, Ibiza, Las Palmas
de Gran Canaria, Madrid, Málaga,
Palma de Mallorca, Santander, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla, Tenerife
Norte y Sur y Zaragoza. Entre las
ciudades internacionales con las que
el aeropuerto cuenta con conexión
directa se encuentran: Berlín, Colonia,
Frankfurt, Bruselas, Copenhague,
Helsinki, París, Amsterdam, Dublín,
Reykjavik, Oslo, Birmingham, Bristol,
Edimburgo, Londres, Manchester,
Moscú, Estocolmo, Ginebra, Orán y
Bogotá entre otras.
La línea de autobús C6 realiza la
conexión con la ciudad con una frecuencia de 20 minutos, y también hay
conexiones directas con Benidorm y
Murcia. El aeropuerto cuenta además
con aparcamiento, empresas de alquiler
de automóviles y parada de taxis.

El puerto es la conexión marítima con
numerosas ciudades del Mediterráneo
y África gracias a la existencia de líneas
regulares que así lo permiten. El puerto
de Alicante recibe a miles de turistas al
año, merced a los numerosos cruceros
y grandes barcos de recreo que hacen
escala en sus muelles. En el puerto
cabe la posibilidad de alquilar barcos
de recreo para recorrer las bellas costas alicantinas.
El tren es el otro medio de transporte
terrestre, gracias a una red ferroviaria
moderna y a unos trenes cómodos y
confortables tipo Altaria y Euromed. A
nivel provincial, el conocido popularmente como “Tram” une Alicante con
las principales localidades de la costa
norte de la provincia, constituyendo
además un interesante atractivo turístico merced a los bellos parajes por los
que discurre su recorrido.
La Estación Central de Autobuses,
desde la que Alicante está conectada
al resto de localidades de su provincia, de capitales españolas y europeas, así como con Marruecos. Su
terminal está ubicada en pleno centro
de la ciudad.
Por carretera se puede llegar a través
de la autopista AP 7-E 15, la cual reco-

rre la provincia de suroeste a nordeste;
hacia el suroeste conecta la provincia
con Murcia y Andalucía, mientras que
hacia el nordeste lo hace con Valencia,
Cataluña y Francia; un ramal de esta
vía enlaza con Cartagena, mientras que
el acceso al resto de provincias de la
geografía española se realiza desde la
autovía A-31 que la enlaza con Madrid.

How to get there
The Altet International Airport
The airport is only 12 km from the city
centre. Located between Alicante and
Elche, it can be reached via the A7 and
the N332 roads.
It is one of the largest airports in the
country and has direct links with
14 destinations in Spain, 59 in the
European Union and 12 destinations
outside the EU, with flights to a total of
20 different countries.
Within Spain, El Altet Airport has direct

The port links Alicante to several Mediterranean and African cities by sea
thanks to a number of regular shipping
routes. The port of Alicante welcomes
thousands of tourists each year off
the numerous cruise ships and large
leisure craft that put in at its harbour.
At the port, you can hire a leisure craft
to travel up and down the beautiful
Alicante coastline.
Alicante has a modern railway network
and comfortable Altaria and Euromed
trains run frequently to and from the
city. The popularly named “Tram” joins
Alicante with the province’s main towns
along its northern coast and is also an
interesting tourist attraction in itself due
to the beautiful places through which it
passes.

Historia
Los primeros vestigios de la existencia
de Alicante se pueden encontrar en la
Cova del Fum en Fontcalent en el III milenio a.C., asentamientos propiciados
por las características geográficas de la
zona en la que luego se ha levantado
la ciudad en un espacio de convergencia de caminos naturales ubicado
frente al mar y que se halla protegido
por varios cerros que cuentan con un
gran valor defensivo. Como núcleo
urbano propiamente dicho hay que
remontarse al siglo IV a.C. para localizar en el Tossal de Manises la colonia
ibérica que más tarde se convertiría en
la ciudad romana de Lucentum.
Tras el paso romano llegaría el turno
a la dominación árabe, desplazándose el emplazamiento urbano hasta
la ladera del monte Benacantil por
motivos defensivos, donde se creó la
Vila Vella, que se convertiría en un punto
de aprovisionamiento marítimo gracias
al cual se desarrolló un importante y
floreciente comercio. La Vila Vella daría
paso en 1247 a la Vila Nova tras la
conquista para Castilla por el infante
Alfonso, que más tarde se convertiría
en Alfonso X El Sabio. En el año 1296
Jaime II incorporó definitivamente la villa
de Alicante al Reino de Valencia y dos
siglos después, en 1490, Fernando el
Católico concedió a Alicante el rango
de ciudad. El siglo XIX sigue siendo una

etapa de importantes transformaciones
en la ciudad, abanderadas
por la llegada del ferrocarril con la línea
Alicante-Madrid; junto a ello, el progreso se pone
de manifiesto con la inauguración del
alumbrado público y una nueva ordenación urbana,
que se plasma en la demolición de las
murallas y la creación de nuevos barrios.
La modernización de la ciudad prosigue en el siglo XX con la puesta en
marcha del tranvía eléctrico y con un
mayor desarrollo de las instalaciones
portuarias. Este siglo vio también el nacimiento de las fiestas de las Hogueras
de San Juan y la intensificación de las
actividades secundaria y terciaria y la
consolidación de Alicante como centro
de servicios y el desarrollo turístico,

que llevaron al desarrollo de la ciudad
hasta convertirse en lo que es en la
actualidad.
El último cuarto del siglo pasado
registró algunos hitos históricos para
Alicante, tales como la primera visita
del rey Juan Carlos I en 1976 y la inauguración de la Universidad de Alicante
en 1979. Por su parte, el carácter
abierto y europeista de la ciudad se
vio consolidado con la concesión de
la sede de la Oficina de Armonización
del Mercado Interior (OAMI) en 1993.
En este último cuarto del siglo XX se
conmemora en 1990 el V Centenario
de la concesión del título de ciudad y
en 1989 el de la llegada de la reliquia
de la Santa Faz.

History
The first signs of Alicante’s existence
were found in the Cova del Fum in
Fontcalent and date back to the 3rd millennium B.C. These settlements sprung
up due to the geography of the area
where the city would later be built, with
natural pathways converging by the sea
and the protection of afforded by several
hills, which was particularly useful for defence. As an urban centre in the strictest
sense, we must travel back to 4 B.C. at

colony that would
later become the
Roman city known
as Lucentum.
After the Roman
period came Arab
domination, with
the urban settlement moving to the
slopes of Mount
Benacantil for defensive purposes.
Here the Vila Vella
was created, which
later became a
maritime supply
point where major
trading would be
carried out.
In 1247, the Vila
Vella was to give way to the Vila Nova
following the conquest for Castile
by Prince Alfonso, who would later
become Alfonso X the Wise. In 1296,
Jaime II definitively incorporated the
town of Alicante into the Kingdom of
Valencia and, two centuries later, in
1490, Ferdinand the Catholic granted
Alicante status as a city.
The 19th century continued to be a
period of great change for the city, led

by the arrival of the railway with the
Alicante-Madrid line. Progress steamed
ahead with the inauguration of street
lighting and new urban planning which
was embodied in the demolition of
the city walls and the creation of new
districts.
The modernisation of the city continued
in the 20th century when the electric
tramcar was introduced and development of the port facilities increased.
This century also saw the birth of the
Hogueras de San Juan festivals and
intense activity in the secondary and
tertiary sectors, along with the consolidation of Alicante as a service centre.
It was, however, tourism that led to the
city’s growth and expansion, making
it what it is today. The last quarter of
the twentieth century recorded some
historic milestones for Alicante, such as
the first visit from King Juan Carlos I in
1976 and the inauguration of the University of Alicante in 1979. For its part,
the open, pro- Europe nature of the city
was confirmed with the opening of the
Headquarters of the Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market (OAMI)
in 1993. Around about the same time,
the 500th anniversary of Alicante’s city
status was celebrated in 1990 and
the arrival of the Santa Faz holy relic in
1989.

Castillo de Santa Bárbara
Ubicado a 166 metros de altitud en el
monte Benacantil, se trata de una fortaleza con un enorme valor estratégico.
El nombre de Santa Bárbara le viene
dado porque fue el día de su festividad, 4 de diciembre, en 1248, cuando
fue tomado a los árabes por el infante
Alfonso de Castilla, futuro rey Alfonso X
el Sabio. El Castillo de Santa Bárbara
se divide en tres recintos diferenciados. El primero de ellos “La torreta”,
en él se encuentra la vieja Torre del
Homenaje, y en él se hallan los restos
más antiguos de la fortaleza. El recinto
intermedio data del año 1580: Salón
Felipe II, antiguo Cuerpo de la Tropa
frente al amplio Patio de Armas, ermita
de Santa Bárbara y Baluarte de la
Reina, entre otros. El tercero de los recintos es el inferior, del XVIII, donde se
encuentra el Revellín del Bon Repós.
Su interior acoge exposiciones.
Se accede al castillo por un ascensor
excavado en la roca, frente a la playa
del Postiguet, o por una carretera que
discurre entre los pinares de la ladera
Norte del Monte Benacanil y cuyo origen está en la calle Vázquez de Mella.
En su ladera se encuentra el Parque de
La Ereta, desde el que se tienen unas
vistas privilegiadas de la ciudad y se
puede acceder a pie al casco antiguo.

Ayuntamiento
Se trata de un palacio barroco del siglo
XVIII construido sobre la antigua Casa
de la Ciudad. El edificio es una construcción singular flanqueada por dos
torres en los extremos y dividido en
tres plantas de altura rematadas por
una balaustrada. Su interior cuenta,
entre otras dependencias singulares,
con el denominado Salón Azul, Salón
de Plenos y una capilla en la que se
puede celebrar misa merced a una
bula pontificia de Pío VI suscrita en el
año 1775.
Su interior acoge el lugar de referencia
desde el que se mide la altitud sobre
el nivel del mar en cualquier lugar de
España. Este punto de referencia, denominado cota cero, se encuentra en
el primer peldaño de la escalera principal del edificio. En los bajos del edificio
anexo al Ayuntamiento, que también
alberga diversas dependencias municipales, se encuentra la exposición “La
ciudad descubierta”, con interesantes
restos arqueológicos conservados
desde la Edad Media hasta la época
moderna.
Diputación Provincial
La sede de la Diputación Provincial
de Alicante se ubica en un palacio de
estilo neoclásico cuyo proyecto fue
obra del arquitecto Juan Vidal Ramos

en 1928. El edificio se corresponde
a un tipo genérico de palacio de
influencia italiana, filtrado por el barroquismo de los palacios borbónicos
de Madrid.
Cuenta también con el denominado
Jardín de las Celebridades, en el que
se pueden encontrar monumentos
clásicos en honor a diversas personalidades alicantinas.
Concatedral de San Nicolás
Esta edificación de estilo renacentista
herreriano se halla en el casco antiguo
de la ciudad, siendo uno de los edificios más emblemáticos del mismo. Se
trata de una iglesia en planta de cruz
latina y capillas laterales comunicadas
entre sí. En su interior destacan el
claustro del siglo XV con dos puertas
barrocas, el altar, la Capilla de la Comunión del siglo XVIII y la cúpula azul
de 45 metros de altura. La decoración
interior es un claro ejemplo del ilusionístico español en la primera mitad del
siglo XVIII.
Basílica de Santa María
El origen de la Basílica data del S. XIV,
ya que su planta se levantó sobre la
mezquita mayor islámica. Consta de
una sola nave, sin crucero, con capillas
laterales sitas entre los contrafuertes,
con un total de seis crujías. Cuenta

con una serie de salas y elementos
que han ido siendo adosadas a lo largo
del tiempo sobre la fábrica primitiva, de
entre las que cabe citar el altar mayor
rococó del siglo XVIII, la pila bautismal del siglo XVI y el órgano barroco
valenciano de 1653. Desde principios
de los años noventa del siglo XX se
han venido llevado a cabo diversas
restauraciones en el edificio.
Museo de la Universidad de Alicante
(MUA)
Este recinto, ubicado en el campus
de la Universidad de Alicante, en la
cercana localidad de San Vicente
del Raspeig, está dedicado al Arte
Contemporáneo, aunque aborda éste
desde una perspectiva apoyada más
en los parámetros de investigación,
producción, conservación, documentación, difusión y didáctica del arte
contemporáneo que en la constitución
de una colección propiamente dicha y
en su exhibición de forma permanente,
como es el caso de los museos al uso.

Yacimiento Arqueológico Lucentum
A poco más de 3 kilómetros del
centro de la ciudad se hallan unos
importantes restos arqueológicos en
el Tossal de Manises. Este yacimiento

corresponde al período íbero-romano.
Se trata del solar de la ciudad romana de Lucentum, la antigua Alicante,
levantada sobre un poblado ibérico.
Constituye uno de los yacimientos
arqueológicos más importantes de la
Comunidad Valenciana.

MUBAG
Se trata de un edificio del siglo XVIII
que en la actualidad acoge el Museo
de Bellas Artes Gravina (MUBAG), que
incluye obras cedidas por la Diputación
Provincial de Alicante del período comprendido entre la Edad Media y 1920.

Palacio Maisonnave
Ubicado en la calle Labradores, este
edificio del siglo XVI acoge en su
interior las instalaciones del Archivo
Municipal y una muestra de restos de
una necrópolis tardo-romana.
Museo Arqueológico Provincial
El recinto del MARQ (Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante) se halla en
las antiguas instalaciones del Hospital Provincial San Juan de Dios de
Alicante. Desde sus salas se aborda la
Arqueología desde un punto de vista
vanguardista apoyado en modernas
técnicas audiovisuales que apuesta por
la renovación del sistema expositivo
tradicional. En su interior, y sobre una
superficie aproximada de 9.000 metros
cuadrados, se exhibe una completa
muestra que abarca desde el Paleolítico hasta la Cultura Moderna contemporánea. El MARQ ofrece al visitante

Este museo refleja la gran tradición
belenista de Alicante. Ubicado en una
casa tradicional del casco antiguo
ofrece una idea de lo que representa
el quehacer belenista en España y en
el mundo, ya que cuenta con obras de
diferentes países.

la historia de la fiesta de las Hogueras

Casino de Alicante
Centro de una importante actividad
social, se encuentra en la Explanada
alicantina. Su interior alberga frescos
del siglo XIX y una rica decoración de
estilo modernista en el Salón Imperio.

De estilo barroco y con bóveda apiramidada se encuentra situado a cinco
kilómetros del casco urbano de la ciudad. En su interior guarda una reliquia
traída del Vaticano en el siglo XV que,
según la tradición popular, corresponde a un lienzo con el que la Verónica
secó el rostro ensangrentado de Jesús
camino del Calvario.
Hasta ella, cada año miles de alicantinos se acercan en peregrinación
desde Alicante el segundo jueves
después del Domingo de Resurrección, siendo una de las fiestas locales más tradicionales de la ciudad.
Dado su carácter de iglesia de peregrinación, en ella hay un camarín tras
el retablo mayor donde se custodia la
reliquia de la Santa Faz.
El Museo de Arte Contemporáneo
de Alicante (MACA)
Es uno de los más trascendentes
proyectos culturales de la ciudad. El

Convento de Las Agustinas
Construido en el siglo XVIII acogió una
residencia de los Jesuitas. Ubicado
en el casco antiguo de la ciudad
acoge en su interior la imagen de la
Virgen de la Soledad, la más antigua
de la Semana Santa alicantina.
Teatro Principal
Fue inaugurado en el año 1847 y es
el recinto teatral por excelencia de la
ciudad.
De corte neoclásico, el interior es un
exponente del típico teatro a la italiana,
con tres zonas claramente diferenciadas:
el vestíbulo, la cavea con planta en forma
de herradura y el escenario.

Santa Bárbara Castle
Located at a height of 166 metres on
Mount Benacantil, this is a fortress
with an enormous strategic value. It
was given the name Santa Bárbara
because it was on her feast day, 4th
December, in 1248, that it was taken
from the Arabs by Prince Alfonso of
Castile, the future King Alfonso X The
Wise. Santa Bárbara Castle is divided
into three separate precincts. The first
of these is known as La Torreta and it
contains the old Torre del Homenaje,
which houses the oldest remains of
the fortress. The middle precinct dates
from 1580: Salón Felipe II, the former
Corps opposite the large inner ward,
Santa Bárbara chapel and the Queen’s
Bastion, amongst others. The third
precinct is the lowest and dates back
to the 18th century; it is here that the
battlement known as the Revellín del
Bon Repós can be found. Its interior
also hosts exhibitions.
The castle can be reached by a lift
that has been excavated out of the
rock, opposite El Postiguet beach, or
by a road that runs between the pine
groves on the northern slope of Mount
Benacantil and starts in Calle Vázquez
de Mella. On its slope is La Ereta Park,
from which there are spectacular views
of the city and access on foot to the
old quarter.

Town Hall
This is an 18th century baroque palace
built on the site of the former Casa de
la Ciudad.
The building is an unusual structure,
flanked by a tower at either end, divided
into three stories and finished off with
a balustrade. Inside, its most striking
rooms are the famous Blue Room, the
Council Chamber and a chapel where
mass can be given due to a Papal Bull
signed in 1775 by Pope Pius VI.
Inside the building is the reference
point from which the height of any
place in Spain above sea level is measured. This reference point, known as
cota cero, is located on the first step of
the main staircase of the building.
In the basement of the Town Hall’s
adjoining building, which also houses
some local council offices, is the
exhibition “La ciudad descubierta”
(The city uncovered), with interesting
archaeological remains that have been
preserved from mediaeval times to the
modern day.
Provincial Council
The headquarters of the Alicante Provincial Council are located in a
neoclassical style palace which was
designed by the architect Juan Vidal
Ramos in 1928. The building corresponds to a generic type of palace with

an Italian influence and the baroquism
of the Bourbon palaces of Madrid.
It also has a “Jardín de las Celebridades”, a garden containing classical monuments in honour of several
famous figures from Alicante.
San Nicholas Co-Cathedral
This building in the Herrerian Renaissance style is located in the city’s
old quarter and is one of the most
emblematic buildings in the quarter. It
is a Latin-cross plan church with short
arms and communicating side chapels.
Inside you can see the 15th century
cloister with two baroque doors, the
altar, the 18th century Communion
Chapel and the 45-metre high blue
dome. The interior decoration is a clear
example of Spanish illusionistic style
from the first half of the 18th century.
Santa María Basilica
The origins of the Basilica date back to
the 14th century, as it was built on the
site of the Great Mosque. It has a single
nave, without a cross shape, with side
chapels located between the buttresses
and a total of six bays. It has a series
of rooms and elements that have been
added over time to the basic construction, among which are the 18th century
Rococo high altar, the 16th century
baptismal font and the 1653 Valencian

baroque organ. Since the beginning of
the 1990’s various restoration projects
have taken place in the building.
University of Alicante Museum (MUA)
This museum, located on the University of Alicante campus, in the nearby
town of San Vicente del Raspeig,
is dedicated to Contemporary Art,
although from a perspective that centres more specifically on the parameters of research, production, conservation, documentation, distribution
and education about contemporary
art rather than in the setting up of a
collection in the strictest sense and
in its permanent exhibition, as is the
case for most museums.

Lucentum Archaeological Site
Just over 3 kilometres from the city
centre are important archaeological
remains in El Tossal de Manises. These
remains date from the Ibero-Roman period and are the site of the Roman city
of Lucentum, ancient Alicante, which
was built over an Iberian settlement.
This is one of the largest archaeological
sites in the Region of Valencia.

This is an 18th century building that is
now home to the Gravina Art Gallery

MARQ, Provincial Archaeological
Museum
The MARQ (Alicante Provincial Archaeological Museum) is housed in the
former San Juan de Dios de Alicante
Provincial Hospital. In its halls, archaeology is approached from a revolutionary
point of view using modern audiovisual
techniques that aim to bring new life to
the traditional types of displays. Inside,
over a surface of approximately 9,000
square metres, there is a complete
collection, running from the Palaeolithic
era to contemporary Modern Culture.
The MARQ offers visitors a comprehensive journey through the history of

Museum of the Year Award in 2004.

Alicante Contemporary Art Museum
(MACA)

Situada en el casco urbano de la ciudad a los pies del Castillo de Santa
Bárbara, es uno de los emblemas de

Playa del Saladar-Urbanova
Situada al sur del término municipal
a 5 kilómetros del centro urbano, se

Situada a 11 millas náuticas de Alicante se trata de la única isla habitada de
la Comunidad Valenciana. Realmente
es más que una isla, se trata de un
pequeño archipiélago que se compone
además por los islotes de La Cantera, La Galera y La Nao. Posee una
longitud aproximada de 1.800 m y una
anchura de hasta 400 m.
Sus costas albergaron en el pasado
una base de piratas berberiscos y en el
siglo XVIII el rey Carlos III ordenó levantar en ella un pueblo en el que alojar a
varias familias genovesas que habían
sido rescatadas del puerto tunecino

de Tabarka. Su núcleo urbano está
rodeado por unas murallas que forman
un conjunto que ha sido declarado
Bien de Interés Cultural.
Sus aguas han sido declaradas Reserva Marina del Mediterráneo dada

de su fauna y su flora, y por ser un
claro ejemplo de las comunidades
marinas mediterráneas. El acceso
a la isla puede hacerse por medio
de los barcos que parten desde los
muelles del puerto de Alicante frente
a la Explanada. Una vez en ella, los
visitantes podrán disfrutar de unas

calas y playas de aguas transparentes
y de un pintoresco pueblo marinero en
el que es posible degustar lo mejor de
los productos que ofrece el mar, entre
ellos los arroces a base de pescados
y mariscos, así como el conocido
caldero.

que la circunda y desde el que es
posible recorrerla disfrutando de
sus paisajes y del avistamiento de
la variedad de aves marinas que la
pueblan. Quienes deseen alojarse

Tabarca Island
Located 11 nautical miles away from
Alicante this is the only inhabited island
in the Region of Valencia. This is not
just one island, it is in fact a small
archipielago made up of the islets
La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao. It
measures approximately 1,800 m long
and 400 m wide.
Its coasts were once home to a Berber
pirate camp and in the 18th century,
King Carlos III ordered a town to be
built there to house several Genoese
families who had been rescued from
the Tunisian port of Tabarka.

Its town centre is surrounded by walls
that form an ensemble which has been
declared a Property of Cultural Interest.
Its waters have been declared a Mediterranean Marine Reserve due to their
excellent quality and the biodiversity of
their fauna and flora, and because they
are a clear example of Mediterranean
marine communities.
The island can be accessed by the
boats that leave from the wharfs in the
port of Alicante opposite the Explanada. Once they have arrived on the
island, visitors can spend time at the

coves and beaches with transparent
waters and a picturesque seaside town
where they can taste the best produce
from the sea, including fish and seafood based rice dishes, as well as the
famous “caldero”, a fish and rice dish
served with stock.
A path that runs around the island
invites visitors to take a leisurely stroll to
appreciate the scenery and try to spot
the variety of marine birds that inhabit
this island.

Explanada de España
Se trata de uno de los emblemas de
la ciudad. Discurre de forma paralela
a uno de los muelles del puerto y está
flanqueada a ambos lados por filas de
palmeras que le confieren un carácter
típicamente mediterráneo. El suelo está
decorado con unas 6.600.000 teselas
de mármol tricolor formando un dibujo
con un característico mosaico ondulado.
A lo largo del paseo hay una gran cantidad de bares, cafeterías, heladerías y
restaurantes para hacer más agradable la
visita y el paseo por el mismo, así como
un auditorio donde la Banda Sinfónica
Municipal ofrece conciertos al aire libre
durante todo el año.
Parque de La Ereta
Se encuentra ubicado en la ladera del
Monte Benacantil a los pies del Castillo
de Santa Bárbara, frente a la playa
del Postiguet. Desde él se disfruta de
unas inmejorables vistas de la ciudad
y ofrece la posibilidad de realizar una
interesante ruta desde la cima con
finalización en el casco antiguo. Cuenta
con una sala de exposiciones destinada a la difusión de las artes plásticas,
con especial atención a la promoción
de artistas y creadores de arte actual.

Parque el Palmeral
Es uno de los parques más espectaculares de la ciudad, formado por un
bosque de palmeras, estanques, lagos
y ríos artificiales. Se halla en la carretera
de Alicante en dirección a Elche y
Cartagena. Dispone de instalaciones
deportivas y pista de bicicross, así
como de un templete en el que se
lleva a cabo una programación estable
de actuaciones de animación, teatro
infantil, títeres, etc., siendo su principal
destinataria la población infantil y el
público familiar.
Paseito Ramiro
Reformado recientemente, se encuentra próximo a la playa de El Postiguet.
Bajo el mismo se han localizado restos
de las murallas que rodeaban la ciudad, las cuales pueden apreciarse en
parte en este parque.
Panteón de Quijano
Ubicado a escasos metros de la Plaza
de Toros, este parque presenta un
inconfundible ambiente romántico y

Cuenta con un monumento sepulcral
con obelisco en memoria del gobernador Trino González de Quijano.
Parque de Canalejas
Se trata de otro de los espacios más
tradicionales de Alicante. Se encuentra
a continuación de la Explanada y cuenta
con una espectacular vegetación de la
que destacan varios ficus centenarios de
unos 20 metros de altura. Sus entradas
están flanqueadas por esculturas de
leones y perros. Destaca una estatua del
escritor alicantino Carlos Arniches.
Plaza de Gabriel Miró
Esta plaza homenajea al escritor alicantino del mismo nombre. Ubicada a
escasos metros de la Explanada y del
paseo marítimo, cuenta con una fuente
monumental y árboles centenarios
y frondosos que crean un ambiente
sosegado y agradable.
Portal del Elche
Esta glorieta situada en la Rambla
conserva un inconfundible ambiente
característico del siglo XIX gracias al
quiosco existente en la misma que
imita a los de esa época.

Explanada de España
This is one of the city’s emblems. It runs
parallel to one of the port wharfs and is
lined on both sides with rows of palm
trees giving it a truly Mediterranean feel.
The floor is decorated with 6,600,000
tricolour marble tiles forming a design with
a characteristic wave effect mosaic. Along
the sea front there are numerous bars, cafes, ice-cream parlours and restaurants to
make the visit and the stroll along it more
pleasant, as well as an auditorium where
the Municipal Symphonic band offers
open air concerts all year round.

There is an exhibition room intended for
displaying plastic arts, with a particular
focus on promoting artists and creators
of contemporary art. The park also has

19th century atmosphere due to the
kiosk situated within it, which imitates

Porrat de Sant Antoni.17 de enero. Día en el que se celebra la festividad de
San Antón, santo que da nombre a un
popular barrio de la ciudad y donde se
realiza una procesión del santo, pasacalles, bendición de animales y el sorteo
de un cochinillo.
Carnaval. Febrero. En él se representa
el acto de don Carnal y doña Cuaresma;
estos festejos incluyen además el “sábado ramblero” con desfile de disfraces y
música al aire libre y el velatorio y entierro
de la sardina, siendo unas fiestas muy
celebradas en la ciudad de Alicante.

after whom a popular district of the city
is named and there is a procession with

The ceremony of Don Carnal and
Doña Cuaresma is played out; these
festivities also include “sábado ramblero” with a parade of people in fancy

Silent Procession, where the most valuable statues involved in Alicante’s Holy

Sports
The city of Alicante has a wide range of sports
facilities, some of which have welcomed
outstanding international events such as a
qualifying round of the Eurobasket 2007 and
a Davis Cup semi-final in 2004. Alicante has
also been the departure point for the 2002
and 2007 Tall Ships Regatta (formerly the
Cutty Sark), it has hosted the World Offshore
Championships, the 17th World Rhythmic
Gymnastic Championships and the 1982
Football World Cup, amongst others. In addition to all this, and after the success of the
start of the round the world sailing competition known as Volvo Ocean Race that took
place in Alicante in October 2008, the city
has officially been designated start point of the
next three editions of this important competition. The city usually welcomes numerous top
sportspeople from all over Europe who come
here to make the most of the city’s excellent
climatic conditions to improve their performance in all kinds of open air sports. Consequently and together with the city’s tradition
and strength in sports such as handball or
basketball, Alicante has great facilities for
practising many different sports.

districts of the city, most of these sports
facilities are concentrated in the Mount

The city of Alicante is also famous for
all types of water sports and activities,
such as sailing, jet-skiing, windsurfing
and boat chartering. There is a wide

Plantío, near Alicante airport. There

Como ciudad mediterránea que es,
Alicante posee una gran variedad
gastronómica basada en la dieta que
coge el nombre del mar que baña sus
costas. El arroz y los frutos del Mediterráneo y la huerta son los ingredientes
principales de unos platos de entre los
que destacan arroces tales como el
arroz a banda, el arroz a la alicantina, el
caldero y el arroz caldoso, con el pescado como elemento característico.
La popular “olleta” representa el mejor
ejemplo cocinado a base de verdura y
legumbres.
Antes de sentarse a la mesa, los
aperitivos son lo más indicado para
ir abriendo el apetito. Para ello, nada
mejor que las tradicionales tapas y los
montaditos, que son unos bocadillos
pequeños de origen alicantino que
combinan carnes y salazones con verduras. Para acompañarlos, la “paloma”
y el “cantabria”, bebidas tradicionales
compuestas de anís seco con agua
muy fría y licor de hierbas, respectivamente.
Uno de los platos más típicos de la tierra es sin duda el “esmorzaret alacantí”,
a base de sardina salada, huevo frito y
ñora, así como la “coca amb tonyina”,
que es una jugosa empanada de atún.

cantinas también son la “coca
boba” (dulce), la de “molletes”
y la de tomate y sardinas.
El vino es otro de los elementos que no falta en la mesa
alicantina para acompañar a
sus platos. Buenos ejemplos
de ello los tenemos en los
magníficos vinos de la provincia, como los tintos de doble
capa, los rosados y blancos
jóvenes de uva monastrell, vermeta y garnatxa, o el Fondillón,
que es un afamado vino añejo
alicantino. Y para el postre,
también productos de la tierra:
dátiles, rollitos de anís, frutos
secos, helados y turrón.
La oferta gastronómica alicantina se presenta también en
forma de una gran variedad de
bares y restaurantes, tanto por
la diversidad de precios, que
van desde los más populares
hasta los más elitistas, como
por la amplia oferta de estilos y
tipos de cocina, pudiendo encontrar desde cualquier variedad típica española y la cocina
más avanzada y experimental,

cocina internacional.

Logically, as a Mediterranean city, Alicante has a wide variety of food based
on the Mediterranean diet. Rice and
produce from the Mediterranean and
the land are the main ingredients in rice
dishes such as arroz a banda, el arroz
a la alicantina, el caldero and arroz caldoso, with fish as a typical accompaniment. The popular olleta represents
the best example of an Alicante stew,
based on vegetables and pulses.
Before sitting down at the table, nothing better to whet the appetite than
a few traditional “tapas” and “montaditos”, small sandwiches originating
from Alicante which combine meat
and cooked meats with vegetables.
To accompany these appetisers, try
paloma, a traditional drink made with
dry aniseed liqueur and very cold water
or cantabria, a herb liqueur.
One of the most typical local dishes
is undoubtedly esmorzaret alacantí,
made with salted sardines, fried eggs
and dried red peppers, and coca amb
tonyina, which is a tasty tuna pastry.
Other types of “coca” from Alicante are
coca boba (sweet), molletes (topped
with large crumbs) and tomato and
sardine pastry.
Wine is essential as an accompaniment to local dishes when eating
Alicante style. There are good examples in the magnificent wines from the

province, such as double-fermented
reds, rosés and young white wines
made from Monastrell, Vermeta and
Garnatxa grapes, or Fondillón, which is
a famous Alicante aged wine.
For dessert, local produce also reigns:

The range of food on offer in Alicante
is presented at a great number of
bars and restaurants that vary both as
regards price, starting at the most economical and soaring to the most exclusive, and cooking styles and types. So
in Alicante, you can find anything from

de boutiques, zapaterías y comercios
especializados en diversas materias
que satisfacen las necesidades del
consumidor más exigente.
Se pueden encontrar también tiendas de productos típicos alicantinos
situadas en la avda Alfonso X El Sabio,
la calle Mayor en el Casco Antiguo,
la calle Gerona y en otros lugares del
centro de la ciudad. A ello hay que
añadir los centros comerciales situados
en diferentes puntos de la ciudad que
cuentan con una gran variedad de
establecimientos en los que se ofrecen
desde ropa, calzado y complementos
hasta alimentación, pasando por las
salas de cine. Los centros comerciales de este tipo son los de Puerta de
Alicante, Panoramis, Plaza Mar 2, Gran

Shops selling typical local products can

around the city centre.
There are also shopping complexes
located around the city that have a
great variety of shops offering anything
from clothes, shoes and accessories
to food, and they all have multicinema
