A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In the first reading from Isaiah we get a glimpse of the ultimate
aim of Christian stewardship: Giving glory to God. “Holy,
Holy, Holy is the Lord God of hosts! All the earth is filled
with his glory!” This proclamation inspires the familiar hymn
we sing at the end of the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer; a
very ancient proclamation in our liturgy. We were born to give
God glory, and we proclaim it by the way we live the Eucharist
and bear witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. As we approach
the purifying season of Lent let us ask ourselves: Are we
committed to a life that gives glory to God?

IRA Charitable Rollover has been Signed into Law
We are pleased to report that on December 18, President Obama signed
into law tax legislation that permanently makes the IRA Charitable Rollover
available. What is exciting about the legislation this year is that, unlike in
years past, the rollover does not expire.
The law contains the same provisions and requirements as in previous
years:
 -Individuals must be age 70 ½ and older in order to make a tax-free gift
from their IRA.
 -The maximum amount an individual can contribute in a taxable year is
$100,000.
 -Charitable distributions must be made to a qualified charity like a parish,
Catholic school, or diocese.
 -The distribution must be made directly from the donor’s IRA to the
charity.
 -The distribution does not give the donor a charitable tax deduction, but
it does lower the donor’s adjusted gross income and may save in
ordinary income taxes.
If you have any questions regarding this process or would like to discuss
how you can benefit from this legislation, please contact Melinda Szabo at
512-255-4473 or [email protected].

Saint Vincent’s Corner
In the Gospel today, the disciples decide to leave everything to follow Jesus. We are also called to follow Jesus,
who tells us that “whatever you do to the least of mine, you do for me.”
Your gift to struggling neighbors can bring the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and
doubt, loneliness and dread. For more information about the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, please

Marriage - Why God's Design
Christian marriage is designed by God – in His creation of the complementarity of the male and female bodies –
to be an efficacious sign of the perfect sacramental covenant between Christ and His Bride, the Church. The
nuptial covenant between God and his people Israel had prepared the way for the new and everlasting covenant
in which the Son of God, by becoming incarnate and giving his life, has united to himself all mankind saved by
him, thus preparing for “the wedding-feast of the Lamb.” Sacred Scripture begins with the creation of man and
woman in the image and likeness of God and concludes with a vision of “the wedding-feast of the Lamb.” The
entire Christian life bears the mark of the spousal love of Christ and the Church. Since it signifies and
communicates grace, marriage between baptized persons is a true sacrament of the New Covenant (CCC 1602,
1612, 1617).

TEACHING
The absence of personal fault for an evil does
not absolve one of all responsibility. We must
seek to resist and undo injustices, least we
become bystanders who tacitly endorse evil and
so share in guilt in it.

(Lent, and Each Friday in memory of the Lord) are intense moments of the
Church’s penitential practice. These times are particularly appropriate for spiritual
exercises, penitential liturgies, and pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary
self-denial such as fasting and alms giving, and fraternal sharing (charitable and
missionary works)” (CCC 1438). Please support this long-standing campaign.

Men invited to consider diaconate
Have you recently become aware of a
desire to deepen your faith life, but not
sure why? Do you feel that your heart
is being moved inexplicably in a new or
bold way lately? Have you felt of late a
greater need to know Christ more
intimately, or a growing desire to follow
him more fully, for some unknown
reason? For no apparent reason, has
your awareness increased recently of
the needs of the materially and spiritually poor – and perhaps even sensed a
greater desire to respond? Do you live
a mature faith, love the church, and
follow church teaching, but have a
nagging sense that there’s something
missing?
If you answered yes to some of these
questions, and you are a man between
30 and 57, the Holy Spirit might be
calling you to explore the permanent
diaconate. Does that possibility excite
you? Scare you? Puzzle you? Whatever your reaction, talk to your pastor
about what’s going on in your heart.
He’ll help you decide next steps.
The diaconal formation class of 2022
will begin forming in January 2017.
Inquiry sessions are scheduled (in
Spanish and English) from 2-5 p.m., at
these locations.
With your pastor’s permission, explore
diaconal formation at one of these
sessions.
