Conceived by the Spirit –Born of the Virgin
The God who made the universe has hands too small to
enfold the heads of the cattle. The God of infinite
independence must depend on his mother’s milk for
survival. Shepherds and kings adore the incarnate God.
We come with silence, faith, and awe. This is not a
myth or a symbol. It is a historical event, a saving truth
lies at the heart of our faith. Scripture reveals this to us.
We adore and respond in faith. In Jesus Christ, a divine
person shows us a human face. We see his glory.
We can now focus our attention in this special event on
Christmas. For the last Christmas of his life, St. Francis
of Assisi moved to a cave on a hillside opposite the
town of Greccio. He and the brothers transformed the
cave into a Bethlehem scene. They lined the cave with
straw, installed a crib, and brought an altar for Mass.
At midnight the people of Greccio came in procession,
their lanterns looking like stars streaming across the
valley. They sang the ancient carols of Umbria, echoing
the Gloria of the angels. Arrived at the cave, they were
charmed by the scene. An ox and an ass flanked the
empty crib. Mass began. At homily time Francis stood
by the crib to talk about the birth of Jesus. Awe
engulfed the listeners. Amid a golden light they saw
Francis into the empty crib and lift out a baby and
cradle him in his arms, saying, “Behold the Savior of the
world.” After Mass, Francis disappeared. When the
morning star appeared they found him absorbed in
prayer, his face turned toward Bethlehem. And that is
how the custom of having a Christmas crib began.

THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
“The Lord himself willgive you this sign: the virgin will conceive, and bear a son,
and shall name him Emmanuel” ( Is 7:14). This well known affirmation by the
prophet Isaiah gives us a taste of proximity of that marvelous, stupendous day
which will be the ‘dies natalis’ of Jesus. It was foretold of the prophets and
proclaimed throughout the whole of Sacred Scriptures that He would be the one
who would fulfil and bring them to completion. Our God will be incarnated and
born due to the generous willingness of the ‘Virgin’ who, from the very
beginning of time, was chosen to be the mother of the Savior. Wake up,
therefore, because the birth of the Lord is almost at hand. Let us go to meet Him
in His Glory; to listen to Him, to love Him and to follow Him!

(Alfred McBride, O.

la Iglesia Católica. Ed. Our Sunday Visitor, Inc. Indiana.
