Coming to St. Clement Catholic Church as a new Parochial Vicar this month, the Pastor,
Rev. Tom Anastasia, has requested me to write a few things about myself and my
“curriculum vitae” for the next issue of the Parish Bulle n. So here we go:
I was born the only child of Gil Ma. Pe lla and Maria O. Pamplona (now both deceased) in the Transfigura on of our Lord Parish in the town of Palo in the island of
Leyte in Central Philippines way back in April 30, 1950 (61 years ago). A er my elementary grades, I entered the Sacred Heart Seminary, the then Diocesan Seminary of the
now Archdiocese of Palo in Leyte, as a 13 year old. I stayed for my High School and
College (Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy) for 8 years in the same seminary. A er gradua ng from College, I decided to go on “regency” that is, stay out of the seminary to
discern whether to proceed to Theology or not. I taught in a Catholic School for the
next 2 years.
Two years a er, in 1973, I decided to go back to the Seminary and pursued my Theology Studies in Seminario Mayor de San Carlos in Cebu City, a nearby province. A er 4
years, I was ordained a transi onal Deacon in September 27, 1976 for the Archdiocese
of Palo in Leyte, and six months later, to the Priesthood in March 23, 1977. A er having been ordained a Priest, I was right away assigned as a Parochical Vicar for the next
3 years, serving in 2 Parishes (St. Joseph’s in Dagami, Leyte and Holy Cross Parish in
Carigara, Leyte). In November of 1979, I was appointed Pastor of a small rural Parish
(St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Pastrana, Leyte) un l I was transferred to the City Parish
(Sto. Nino Parish in Tacloban City) where I served as a Parochical Vicar for 2 years in
order for me to finish my Civil Law Course which I enrolled in, in the meanwhile.
Gradua ng from my Civil Law Course in April 1985, I took a Sabba cal in order to enroll in Review Classes in San Beda College (in Manila) in prepara on for the Philippine
Bar Examina ons in November of 1985. Passing the Philippine Bar, and taking the
Oath of an A orney before the Supreme Court of the Philippines in June of 1986, I was
assigned to the Chancery of the Archdiocese of Palo to eventually handle several offices: among them the Social Ac on Director of the Archdiocese of Palo, the Oeconome
(Treasurer of the Archdiocese), ex officio Member of the College of Consultors and the
Board of Temporali es, and the confidante of the Archbishop of Palo. In the mean me,
I was installed in August 16, 1991 as an Honorary Prelate with the tle of Monsignor. I
served for the next 8 years full me in the Chancery.
A er asking several mes the Archbishop if I could go back to parish work, he relented
in December 2, 1994, when he installed me as Pastor in the urban Parish of Sto. Nino in
Tacloban City, concurrent with being the Episcopal Vicar for Temporali es of the Archdiocese. 6 years later, I was transferred to become a Pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish
in Palompon, Leyte where I served for another 5 years – un l the last day of June 2006.
When our then Archbishop re red, I got the chance to ask for another Sabba cal leave,
planning to enroll in my masteral program in Civil Law. I was granted graciously by the
Archbishop the Sabba cal having served the Archdiocese for the past 30 years. The
dream to pursue my studies however did not materialize because in the meanwhile an
“invita on” from several priest-friends serving the Diocese of St. Petersburg became
too “temp ng” to try. So I applied to the Bishop of St. Petersburg if I could be permi ed to serve in his Diocese. He consented and that’s how I ended up serving Incarnaon Parish in Town and Country in 2006, then reassigned to St. Luke’s Parish in Palm
Harbor in 2008, and now here in St. Clement Parish in Plant City in October 2011.

DE PARTE DEL REV. MSGR. CESAR PETILLA
Ya que vengo este mes a la Iglesia de San Clemente como Vicario Parroquial, el Pastor
Tom Anastasia, requiere que escriba algo de mí mismo en un “currículum vitae” para el
próximo Bole n Parroquial.
Fui el hijo único de Gil Ma. Pe lla y María O. Pamplona (ya fallecidos los dos) el 30 de
Abril de 1950 (hace 61 años) en la Parroquia Trasfiguración del Señor en la Isla de Leyte
en un pueblo llamado Palo, en Filipinas. Después de atender a una escuela elemental,
entre en el Seminario del Sagrado Corazón, que entonces era el Seminario Diocesano
de la que es ahora la Archidiócesis de Palo en Leyte, siendo un muchacho de 13 años.
En el mismo seminario curse mi Escuela Superior y Universidad (graduado en Artes y
Filoso a) por un periodo de 8 años. Después de graduarme en la Universidad decidí
hacer “regencia” esto es, quedarme afuera del seminario para discernir si proceder con
la teología o no. Enseñé los dos años siguientes en una Escuela Católica.
Dos años después, en 1973, decidí volver al Seminario y seguir mis estudios de Teología
en el Seminario Mayor de San Carlos, en la ciudad de Cebu, una provincia cercana.
Después de cuatro años, fui ordenado Diacono el 27 de sep embre de 1976 por la Archidiócesis de Palo en Leyte y seis meses más tarde fui ordenado sacerdote, el 23 de
marzo de 1977. Nada más ser ordenado sacerdote, fui asignado como Vicario Parroquial por tres años, sirviendo en dos Parroquias (San José en Dagami, Leyte y en la Parroquia de La Sagrada Cruz en Carigara de Leyte). En noviembre de 1979, fui designado pastor de una pequeña parroquia rural (San Francisco de Asís en Pastrana, Leyte)
hasta que fui transferido a otra Parroquia(Parroquia del Santo Niño) en la ciudad de
Tacloban, donde serví por dos años para así poder matricularme y terminar mi curso
de Ley Civil.
Habiéndome graduado del curso de Ley Civil en abril de 1985, tome un año Sabá co
para matricularme en las Clases de Repaso de la Universidad de San Beda, en Manila,
con la intención de prepararme para los Exámenes Oficiales de Leyes en noviembre de
1985. Habiendo aprobado estos exámenes y tomado “ El Juramento de Abogado” delante de la Corte Suprema de las Filipinas, en junio de 1986, me asignaron a la Cancillería de la Archidiócesis de Palo para desempeñar diversos cargos: algunos de estos
cargos fueron el de Director de Acción Social de la Archidiócesis de Palo, Tesorero de la
Archidiócesis de Oeconome, miembro ex oficio de la Universidad de Consultores y Consejero de Temporalidades, fui también confidente del Arzobispo de Palo. El 16 de agosto de 1991 fui asignado Prelado Honorario con el tulo de Monseñor. En los próximos
ocho años serví de forma permanente en la Cancillería.
Después de pedirle al Arzobispo, varias veces, volver al trabajo de parroquia, el cedió
en instalarme en este puesto el 2 de diciembre de 1994 como Pastor en la Parroquia del
Santo Niño en la ciudad de Tacloban, concurriendo a la vez con ser Vicario Episcopal
para las Temporalidades de la Archidiócesis. Seis años más tarde fui transferido como
Pastor a San Francisco Javier en Palompon, Leyte, donde estuve sirviendo por 5 años a
la comunidad hasta el úl mo día de junio 2006.
Cuando el Arzobispo se re ró pedí otro año Sabá co para matricularme en el programa maestral de Ley Civil. Se me fue concedida esta pe ción por el Arzobispo al haber
servido por treinta años a la Archidiócesis. El sueño de seguir mis estudios no se materializo ya que recibí una “invitación” de varios amigos sacerdotes que sirven es la Diócesis de San Petersburgo, demasiado tentadora para rechazar. Así que escribí al Obispo de San Petersburgo pidiéndole servir en su Diócesis. Él consin ó y así es como termine sirviendo en la Parroquia de la Encarnación en “Town and Country” en el año
2006, reasignado a la Parroquia de San Lucas, en Palm Harbor, en el año 2008 y ahora
aquí, en la Parroquia de San Clemente de Plant City en octubre del 2011.
