And then he looked right through me as if I wasn’t there.” Such is the experience of the woman at the well, the featured character in today’s Gospel. (John 4:29) Date Activities Place Jesus is not trying to purposefully embarrass this woman. He is “killing her softly” in order to have her experience real conversion, to actually turn her life inside out. This is such an appropriate story for the Lenten season because it speaks of mortification, which means “putting to death.” The woman is mortified by what Jesus says about her life, but through letting go of her self-deception, she will see possibilities of the new life he promises. THE SAMARITAN WOMAN Our standards of what is right and proper often drive some people to the edges of society, far away from us. The Samaritan woman is one such victim. Her religious background and her nationality make her a nonperson in the eyes of Judaism; her lifestyle makes her a pariah among her own. But rather than reject her, Jesus calls forth from her a sense of faith and joy that enables her to confront her life, and in telling others of her encounter with Jesus, she becomes a source of faith and joy for others. May we be able to do the same: to move beyond the failings of others and our disappointment in them in order to call forth the good they possess and make it possible for them to use those gifts for the good of all. The water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” Today’s Gospel presents us with the longest one-on-one exchange between Jesus and another person in any of the four Gospels. The story of the Samaritan woman at the well cut the heart of the journey of conversion. Listen carefully to the exchange between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in today’s passage. As the conversation unfolds, Jesus uncovers the woman’s sinfulness. Imagine yourself at the well. Imagine the Lord Jesus uncovering your own sinfulness. Rediscover the great gift that the Lord Jesus offers you today: a way out of sinfulness and a way into everlasting peace and goodness. Let today’s Gospel scrutinize each one of us so that, like the Samaritan woman, we will proclaim Jesus as Messiah to all we meet. JESUS AND THE SAMARITAN WOMAN First impressions last. They can work for or against us. When we meet someone for the first time, we immediately begin to size them up. We pick up the signals. Is the smile sincere? Is the Pastor’s Notes person loud or timid? Is their character confident, happy, and interesting? Some people seem able to gain an accurate impression of an individual after only a few seconds. When Jesus met the woman at the well, they both made fairly quick assumptions about each other. The woman was instantly able to see that Jesus was a Jew, and so her natural expectation was that He would not want anything to do with her. In this her first impression was very wrong. Jesus in turn was able to gain an accurate impression of the woman; He recognizes that she is an outcast, someone with something to be ashamed of. She is living in an adulterous relationship. But Jesus doesn't share the prejudices of His people. He very gently leads her on a journey of discovery. He shows that He knows who -and what- she is. Jesus shows that He accepts her, will not condemn or dismiss her. He gives her time, treats her with respect, acknowledging her dignity. He makes her an offer which entices her, but which she misunderstands: "Give me some of that water so that I may never have to come here again to draw water", she says. (John 4:5-42). Patiently, Jesus leads her to a deeper understanding of what He is offering: the living water. And finally, she is so taken with Jesus that she spreads the message and brings others to meet Him, so that they also can spend time with the Lord and come to experience for themselves who He is, Jesus leads the Samaritan woman on a journey of faith, revealing Himself to be the Messiah as He leads us in the same patient, gentle way, in our relationship with Him. The contact with Jesus makes us change and grow. It brings us into communion with others and leads us to share the Good News. No necesitan hacer reservaciones.
