with various landscapes and multiple
tourism attractions a few kilometers away

Montevideo, la capital más austral de América del
Sur, existió primero como una fortaleza del Imperio
Español y más tarde se convirtió en una importante
ciudad portuaria, en la mitad del siglo 18. La
inmigración de europeos, entre ellos españoles,
portugueses, franceses y británicos, influyó en la
arquitectura de la ciudad, la cual se mantiene muy
bien preservada y presenta estilos y corrientes que
difícilmente se ven en otros sitios, como el Art Nouveau
y el Art Decó.
A la hora de la diversión la oferta es muy variada. Playas,
parques, teatros, museos, shoppings, centros de
exposiciones o deportivos, nuevos casinos, el renovado
Teatro Solís, el nuevo Auditorio del Sodre o el restaurado
Hipódromo de Maroñas son algunas de las opciones que
enriquecen el cotidiano quehacer de los uruguayos y
quienes nos visiten.
Las expresiones artesanales uruguayas, de calidad
reconocida por los visitantes, están siendo comercializadas
en distintas partes del mundo. Entre ellas se destacan los
productos elaborados en madera, cuero, hueso, lana y
piedras preciosas, que pueden ser apreciadas y adquiridas
en numerosas tiendas especializadas.
Montevideo, the most southern capital of South America,
was first a fortress of the Spanish Empire, and was later
turned into an important port city, in the middle of the
18th century. European immigration, including Spanish,
Portuguese, French and British immigrants, had an impact
on the city architecture, which is well-preserved, and
includes styles and movements hardly ever seen in other
places, like Art Nouveau and Art Deco. When it comes to fun
and entertainment, there are countless offerings.
Beaches, parks, theaters, museums, shopping malls,
exhibition centers, sports facilities, new casinos, the
renewed Solís Theater, the new Sodre Auditorium, or the
renovated Maroñas racecourse are just some of the options
that enrich the daily lives of the locals and those who visit us.
The high quality of Uruguayan crafts is recognized by
visitors, and they are now being marketed in different parts
of the world. The most noteworthy creations are made of
wood, leather, bone, wool, and precious stones, which can
be admired and purchased in several specialty stores.

Punta del Este is the MERCOSUR Tourism
Capital. This worldly renowned seaside resort
provides a perfect combination of natural
beauty and a sophisticated cultural and social
life. Every summer international visitors are
attracted by its glamour. Beautiful beaches
and magnificent houses situated among pine
trees have become a distinctive seal.
But Punta del Este never slows down. In winter,
tourists can enjoy excellent accommodation
choices, great relaxing spas, saltwater fishing,
dreamlike landscapes in Laguna del Sauce
and its surrounding woods. At night, top level
casinos, discos and restaurants are must-go
places, attracting visitors all year round.
More and more cruise ships are coming to
Uruguay. Some of largest cruises arrive both in
Montevideo and Punta del Este (approximately

En la playa y en la sierra, en la ciudad y en el campo, los deportes en
Uruguay son siempre protagonistas. Las cabalgatas en la costa y en
las diferentes estancias turísticas son un paseo inolvidable.
Las abundantes costas, ríos y arroyos ofrecen inolvidables
propuestas. Sandboard en los médanos del este, windsurf en
los espejos de agua, alto voltaje para los amantes del surf en
las olas oceánicas, entre otros deportes náuticos como vela,
canotaje, etc. Nuestras sierras son perfectas para aquellos
que amando la naturaleza desean trepar, escalar o recorrer,
a pie o en bicicleta sinuosos senderos.
El avistamiento de aves también encuentra en Uruguay lugares
ideales para su práctica, con una gran variedad de especies.
Para amantes de la pesca, la variedad es abundante. En los ríos
interiores podrán pescar bogas, tarariras, dorados y bagres. Otros
ríos y la costa atlántica le permitirán la pesca de corvinas, brótolas y
pejerreyes.
Quienes gusten de la caza deportiva, tienen alternativas en distintos
puntos del país, respetando las temporadas, zonas y especies permitidas.
El fútbol es el deporte más popular de un país que fue la sede del primer
Campeonato Mundial en 1930 y ya se prepara con intenciones de volver
a serlo en 2030.
On the beach or the hills, in the cities or the countryside, sports in Uruguay
are always the center of attention. Horseback riding on the coast or in one
of the different tourist farms can indeed be a memorable experience.
The country’s many beaches, rivers and streams offer unforgettable
opportunities: sandboarding in the east coast dunes, windsurfing in the
lagoons, high-voltage surfing for surf lovers in the ocean waves, and
other water sports like sailing, canoeing, and so on.
Our hills are perfect for those who love the nature and want to practice
climbing, hiking or mountain biking along winding paths.
Uruguay also offers great places for birdwatching, given the large variety
of national species.
For fishing enthusiasts, there are plenty of options. Inland rivers are
home to species like boga, tararira, dorado and catfish, while other rivers
and the Atlantic coast provide the opportunity to fish for corvina, brotola
and silverfish.
Recreational hunters have options in different parts of the country,
provided they comply with hunting policies related to seasons, regions,
and species.
Soccer is the most popular sport nationwide. Uruguay hosted the first
World Cup Championship in 1930, and it intends to be the host again in
2030.

Ubicadas en el litoral, en los
departamentos de Salto y Paysandú,
siempre cercanas al Río Uruguay, a no
más de 500 km de Montevideo, existen
seis centros termales con excelentes
posibilidades de alojamiento que van desde
cabañas y campings bien equipados, hasta
hoteles 5 estrellas.
Cuentan con gran variedad de propuestas
de diversión y entretenimiento, como
magníficos Parques Acuáticos Termales
y Casinos.
Uruguay has several hot springs,
either freshwater or saltwater
ones. Water emerges from
the Guaraní aquifer at
temperatures ranging from
34 ºC, up to 46 ºC.
Hot springs are located on the
west along the Uruguay River,
in the departments of Salto and
Paysandú, not more than 500
km from Montevideo. There are six
hot springs centers with extraordinary
accommodation options, ranging from
cottages and campsites with all the
necessary facilities, to five-star hotels.
They offer a wide variety of entertainment
and recreational choices, such as casinos
and water parks.

El barrio histórico de Colonia del
Sacramento ha sido reconocido por la
UNESCO como “Patrimonio Cultural
de la Humanidad” desde diciembre de
1995.
Sobre el Río de la Plata, la ciudad
conserva
aún
-restauradas-,
su
antigua muralla y el puente levadizo,
así como sus calles empedradas y
muchas construcciones del siglo XVIII
convertidas hoy en museos.
Hotelería y restaurantes de
muy buen nivel, pintorescas
tiendas de artesanías y
antigüedades, y noches
a la luz de los viejos
faroles del casco antiguo
hacen de Colonia un
lugar único.
The historic quarter of
Colonia del Sacramento
was declared by UNESCO as
“World Cultural Heritage” site
in December 1995.
Located by the River Plate, the city
still preserves its original walls and
drawbridge, that have been restored,
as well as cobblestone streets and many
buildings from the 18th century, now
turned into museums. High level hotels
and restaurants, colorful crafts and
antique stores, and nights spent under
the light of the streetlights of the historic
quarter make Colonia a unique place.

Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la
UNESCO, son dos de los principales
ritmos que encontraron en Uruguay tierra
fértil para desarrollarse y hoy habitan en

Los festejos del carnaval uruguayo,
declarado de interés nacional, son los
más largos del mundo y se extiende
durante todo el mes de febrero.
Tango and candombe, declared World
Intangible Heritage on September 30,
2009 by UNESCO, are two of the most
important musical styles that quickly
spread in Uruguay, and can be found
nowadays in every corner of the country.
Celebrations of the Uruguayan carnival
are the longest of the world, spreading
during the entire month of February, and
have been declared of national interest.

gastronomía, con fuertes componentes
autóctonos como diversos tipos de
carnes asadas al fuego, con el inigualable
acompañamiento de un vino tinto con
marca de origen: El Tannat.
El Mate es una infusión tradicional que

los grandes símbolos por los
que se los reconoce.
Another Uruguayan feature,

Documentación
Los visitantes provenientes de los países de la región no necesitan presentar pasaporte para el ingreso al país, siendo
suficiente el documento de identidad vigente. De todos modos se recomienda consultar en las representaciones
diplomáticas.

Vía Aérea
A los aeropuertos internacionales del país llegan las principales líneas aéreas comerciales del mundo, con vuelos
regionales desde Buenos Aires, Porto Alegre, San Pablo, Río de Janeiro, Asunción, Panamá, Santiago de Chile y
Lima. Además arriban vuelos internacionales directos desde Estados Unidos y Europa. Los principales aeropuertos
son el Aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco (Montevideo), el Aeropuerto Internacional Laguna del Sauce, en Punta
del Este (Maldonado) y el de Colonia del Sacramento (Colonia).
Arriving by air
The leading commercial airlines operate flights to Uruguay’s international airports, with regional flights from
Buenos Aires, Porto Alegre, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Asunción, Panama, Santiago de Chile and Lima. There are also
direct international flights from the United States and Europe. The country’s main airports are Carrasco International
Airport (Montevideo), Laguna del Sauce International Airport, in Punta del Este (Maldonado) and Colonia del
Sacramento International Airport (Colonia).
Vía Fluvial
Numerosas frecuencias de buques y ferrys unen a Buenos Aires con Colonia, Carmelo y Montevideo, que incluyen la
posibilidad de traslado de automóviles. Numerosos puertos deportivos también permiten el acceso de embarcaciones
privadas.

Several ferries travel daily between Buenos Aires and Colonia, Carmelo and Montevideo, including drive-on ferries.

Al no contar con grandes accidentes geográficos, Uruguay está naturalmente predispuesto a estar muy bien
comunicado. Una muy amplia y segura infraestructura vial terrestre permite la llegada a todo el territorio nacional,
a través de ómnibus, taxis y automóviles de alquiler. La Terminal de ómnibus Tres Cruces, en Montevideo, atiende el
conjunto de servicios de media y larga distancia hacia cualquier punto del país.
Arriving by land
Due to its geography, Uruguay is privileged with a very well-connected road system.
An extensive and safe network of roads makes it possible to travel to any part of Uruguay, either by bus, taxi, or a
rented car. The Tres Cruces Bus Station, in Montevideo, handles all medium- and long-distance passenger services
to anywhere in the country.

Las comunicaciones terrestres dentro del país se realizan mayoritariamente en ómnibus y taxis, servicios que ofrecen
costos reducidos y total seguridad. Tres Cruces, en Montevideo, es la estación de ómnibus más importante del país,
desde donde es posible trasladarse hacia cualquier punto.
Traveling by land
Buses and taxis are the most commonly used means, offering reduced rates and the highest safety standards. Tres
Cruces, in Montevideo, is Uruguay’s most important bus station, from where it is possible to travel to any part of the
country.
Moneda
El sistema es de libre cambio. Existe una relación de 18 a 21 pesos por dólar en los últimos dos años, y de 23 a 27
pesos por euro. Es posible realizar operaciones de compraventa en bancos y casas de cambio con facilidad. Asimismo
se efectúan pagos y transacciones en dólares estadounidenses. Las tarjetas de crédito son aceptadas en la mayoría
de los establecimientos, así como es posible cambiar cheques de viajeros en cualquier banco. Además, en el país
existen sucursales de los grupos bancarios más importantes del mundo. El dinero corriente va desde monedas de $1,
$2, $5, $10, $50, hasta billetes de $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, $1000 y $2000.
Currency
Uruguay has a free exchange system. The dollar exchange rate in the last couple of years has been 18 -21 pesos,
while the euro exchange rate has been 23-27 pesos. Exchange operations can be easily carried out in any bank and
exchange house. Payments and transactions can be made in US dollars. Major credit cards are widely accepted, and
it is possible to cash traveler’s checks at any bank. The world’s most important banks have branches in Uruguay. Local
currency is issued in coins of $1, $2, $5, $10, $50, and banknotes of $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, $1000 y $2000.
Alojamiento
En los últimos años, Uruguay ha aumentado su oferta hotelera. La variedad de estos establecimientos comprende desde
alojamientos económicos en campings y posadas, hasta hoteles 5 estrellas Plus, con salas de convenciones, canchas de
golf y polo, piscinas y todo tipo de servicios. También se destacan los alojamientos en las estancias turísticas y en las termas,
lugares donde uno encuentra variedad de servicios. En la mayoría de los balnearios del país, además de una amplia gama
de establecimientos, es muy común el alquiler de casas.
Accommodation
In recent years, Uruguay has expanded its accommodation offerings. These range from budget lodgings in
campsites and guest houses, to five-star hotels, with conference halls, golf courses, polo fields, pools, and a full
array of amenities. Other accommodation options can be found in tourist farms and hot springs, providing a wide
variety of services. In most of the seaside cities, in addition to all kinds of accommodation, you can find houses to
rent for the summer.
Comunicaciones
Las telecomunicaciones en Uruguay están muy extendidas y el visitante puede encontrar desde teléfonos públicos,
cybercafés y oficinas de Servicio Postal en cualquier punto, hasta la posibilidad de alquilar teléfonos celulares. La
tecnología en telecomunicaciones es 100% digital e Internet con banda ancha. Asimismo, Uruguay está conectado
de punta a punta por una moderna conexión vial, que permite acceder fácilmente a cualquier punto del país.

la OMT (Organización Mundial del
Turismo) estudió como “caso de éxito”
el desarrollo turístico de Uruguay.
De la misma froma el PBI (Producto Bruto
Interno) en los últimos 8 años creció por
encima de la media de América Latina.
Y, más alla de la crisis internacional,
Uruguay volvió a recibir el Investment
Grade por sus consistentes políticas
económicas.
