This past Monday, May 18. 2015, St.
Charles Borromeo Seminary’s Graduate
School of Theology opened its doors for its
annual commencement. Among other
graduates were 27 students receiving a
certificate from the Church Ministry Program. Those 27 students were part of the
Spanish Track of that program being
offered totally in Spanish by the Mobile
Catholic Institute.
Este pasado lunes 18 de mayo del 2015, el
Seminario San Carlos Borromeo abrió sus
puertas para su graduación anual. Entre
otros graduados había 27 estudiantes que
recibieron un certificado del Programa Ministerio Eclesial. Esos veintisiete estudiantes fueron parte de ese programa del
seminario ofrecido totalmente en español
por el Instituto Católico Móvil.

They came from many parishes in the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia: St. Helena, St. Veronica, St. Ambrose, St.
Albert the Great, Cathedral Parish, St. Cecilia, Maternity
BVM and St. Thomas Aquinas in Philadelphia; Our Lady of
Fatima Center and St. Mark in Bucks County; and St.
Stanislaus in Montgomery County. Twenty one students
attended the ceremony.
To make it special, that is the very group that started the
Mobile Catholic Institute, incredibly three years ago already. It was in 2012, when we were commissioned to bring
to the parishes the Mobile Catholic Institute’s programs I
ncluding Church Ministry, Quinceañeras, Pre-Cana and
others.
Back in 2012, as in the subsequent years, contact was
established with the parishes and the pastors welcomed the
program. This past passed school year, the Institute had six
sites where classes took place: St. Helena, St. Martin of
Tours, Holy Innocents and St. Thomas Aquinas in Philadelphia County; St. Patrick in Chester County; and Our Lady of Fatima Center in Bucks County, with a little more
than 100 people receiving formation classes in Spanish. We
are very grateful to the pastors for their welcome.
Monday, May 18, was the culmination of a year of the
team effort of parishes, priests, religious sisters and lay
teachers, and students committed to this program. Some of
the pastors and
instructors shared this special day with their students; we
are very thankful to all of them for their support.

According to our Pope Francis, who will visit us this
September during the World Meeting of Families: “Each of
us has a vision of good and of evil. We have to encourage
people to move towards what they think is good... Everyone
has his own idea of good and evil and must choose to follow the good and fight evil as he conceives them. That
would be enough to make the world a better place”.
We encourage the graduates to share with their friends and
families their experience of these three years; to be an inspiration to others, to get involved in these formation courses
which can help them gain a clearer vision of good and evil,
to follow the good and fight evil and in Pope Francis’
words: “...make the world a better place”.

Ellos provienen de muchas parroquias en la Arquidiócesis de
Filadelfia: Santa Helena, Santa Verónica, San Ambrosio,
Saint Albert the Great, Parroquia Catedral, Saint Cecilia, Maternity BVM, Santo Tomás de Aquino, Centro Nuestra Señora
de Fátima y San Marcos en el Condado Bucks, y San Estanislao en el Condado Montgomery . Veintiún estudiantes
asistieron a la ceremonia.
Para que fuera más especial, ése es el grupo que inició el
Instituto Católico Móvil, increíblemente hace ya tres años.
Fue en el 2012, cuando recibimos el encargo de llevar a las
parroquias los programas del Instituto Católico Móvil, entre
otros, el de Ministerio Eclesial, Quinceañeras, Pre-Caná .
En ese entonces, como en los años posteriores, se estableció
contacto con las parroquias y los párrocos le dieron la bienvenida al programa. Este año escolar que acaba de pasar, el
Instituto tuvo seis sitios donde las clases tuvieron lugar: Santa
Elena, San Martín de Tours, Santos Inocentes y Santo Tomás
de Aquino en el Condado Filadelfia; San Patricio en el
Condado Chester; y Centro Nuestra Señora de Fátima en el
Condado Bucks, con un poco más de 100 personas que han
recibido clases de formación en español. Estamos muy agradecidos a los párrocos por su acogedora bienvenida.
El lunes 18 de mayo, fue la culminación de un año de
esfuerzos en equipo de parroquias, sacerdotes, maestros religiosos y laicos, y estudiantes comprometidos con este programa. Algunos de los párrocos y de los maestros compartieron
ese día especial con sus estudiantes; estamos muy agradecidos
a todos ellos por su apoyo.

De acuerdo a nuestro papa Francisco, quien nos visitará este
mes de septiembre durante el Encuentro Mundial de las Familias: «Cada uno de nosotros tiene una visión del bien y del
mal. Tenemos que animar a la gente a moverse hacia lo que
ellos piensan que es bueno... Todo el mundo tiene su propia
idea del bien y del mal y hay que optar por seguir el bien y
luchar contra el mal como lo conciben. Eso sería suficiente
para hacer del mundo un lugar mejor».
Animamos a los graduados a compartir con sus familiares y
amigos su experiencia de estos tres años; a que inspiren a
otros a participar en esos cursos de formación que pueden
ayudarlos a obtener una visión más clara del bien y del mal,
para optar por seguir el bien y combatir el mal y según las
palabras del papa Francisco: «...hacer del mundo un lugar
mejor».

The presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the
Church has been revealed to us in various ways during the Easter season. However, it is in the Feast of
Pentecost when we truly remember the powerful action
of the Divine Spirit in our lives and the birth of the
Church (Acts. 2).
La presencia del Espíritu Santo en la vida de la Iglesia
resucitada se nos fue revelando de distintas maneras
durante el tiempo pascual. Pero es en la fiesta de Pentecostés en donde verdaderamente recordamos la acción
poderosa del Divino Espíritu en nuestras vidas y el nacimiento de la Iglesia (Hch. 2).
Después de la venida del Espíritu Santo sobre los apóstoles y la Virgen María en el cenáculo, podemos ver un
cambio, encontramos una Iglesia viva y transformada.
Hoy día, nosotros también necesitamos experimentar
una conversión urgente y para ello, es preciso clamar
por una fresca unción del Santo Espíritu.
El fin de semana de la fiesta de Pentecostés distintas
parroquias alrededor de la Arquidiócesis, al igual que
las primeras comunidades cristianas, se reunieron para
conmemorar este día realizando vigilias de oración, retiros, conciertos. ¡Qué gran día para celebrar en comunidad!
Hoy quiero invitarlos a seguir celebrando Pentecostés,
como una fiesta que no termina. La promesa del Espíritu Santo para nuestras vidas no se limita a un solo domingo, más bien permanece y se renueva cada día, llenándonos de su presencia y amor, guiándonos en nuestras acciones, ayudándonos a orar, santificándonos para
parecernos cada vez más a Jesús.
En nuestra peregrinación terrenal como pueblo de Dios,
durante nuestra historia personal de salvación, en
nuestros trabajos, familias, en todo momento necesitamos pedir la presencia del Espíritu Santo. Necesitamos
estar unidos a Él para que nos enseñe a vivir y nos recuerde siempre las palabras de Jesús: “Pero el Consola-

change, we find a living and transformed Church. Today, we also need to experience an urgent conversion
and for that, we must cry out for a fresh anointing of
the Holy Spirit.
The weekend of Pentecost, various parishes around
the Archdiocese, imitating the first Christian communities, gathered to commemorate this day organizing
prayer vigils, retreats, concerts. What a great day to
celebrate in community!
Today, I would like to invite you to continue celebrating Pentecost as a Feast that never ends. The
promise of the Holy Spirit in our lives is not limited to
one Sunday. Moreover, that promise remains and is
renewed every day, filling us with His presence and
love, guiding us in our actions, helping us to pray,
sanctifying us to be more like Jesus.
In our earthly pilgrimage as people of God, for our
personal salvation history, in our jobs, families, we
always need to ask for the presence of the Holy Spirit.
We need to be united with Him, who is the one that
teaches us how to live and who reminds us the words
of Jesus: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in My name, He will teach you all
things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said
to you” (John 14:26).
The Virgin Mary, model of life and docility, teaches us
to open our hearts to receive the fullness of the Holy
Spirit. With Mary and her intercession, let us pray to
receive the grace of a new outpouring of the Holy
Spirit so everyday could truly be a Pentecost Feast for
us.

Chapter 8: A Home for the Wounded Heart
Jesus set a high standard for chastity, asking his
followers to live differently from the rest of the world.
Jesus taught things about sexuality and marriage
which we may find difficult to accept and live, both in
ancient times and today. But Jesus asked us to live
sacrificially for good reason. Jesus tells us the truth
about how to love, and so if we respect marriage vows,
practice self-control, and treat each other chastely,
communion and freedom of spirit will dawn in our
hearts and in our communities. Of course, we all
stumble and sin, hurting ourselves and others in the
process. Sin causes profound pain in family life. That is
why Pope Francis once famously likened the Church to
“a field hospital after battle.” Pope Benedict called
each parish a “family of families.” In our ordinary
parish life, each of us fulfills our mission when we bear
one another’s burdens and help each other heal the
wounds. No one should be lonely or forgotten in a
parish. The Church is a family of those who have
encountered Jesus, who confess that he is Lord, who
desire his grace to shape their lives, and so help each
other respond to him. Jesus’s way enables patience,
forgiveness, and trust, so that we can convert and renew our hearts in ways that would otherwise seem
impossible. Whatever controversies might arise in our
culture, whatever others might do or fail to do, Jesus
and his Sacraments are always with us, and love is
always our mission. See this month’s catechism chapter for more details.

Capítulo 8: Un hogar para los que sufren
Jesús estableció un alto nivel de castidad pidiendo a sus
seguidores vivir de un modo diferente del resto del
mundo. Jesús enseñó cosas acerca de la sexualidad y el
matrimonio las que pueden ser difíciles de aceptar y
vivir, tanto en los tiempos antiguos y en los
actuales. Pero Jesús nos pidió vivir sacrificadamente
por una buena razón. Jesús nos dice la verdad acerca de
cómo amar, y si respetamos los votos matrimoniales,
practicamos el autocontrol y nos tratamos los unos a los
otros castamente, la comunión y la libertad de
espíritu nacerá en nuestros corazones y en nuestras comunidades. Por supuesto todos tropezamos y pecamos,
lastimándonos entre nosotros mismos y a otros en el
proceso. El pecado causa un dolor profundo en la vida
familiar. Es por ello que el papa Francisco una vez
comparó brillantemente a la Iglesia «con un hospital
después de una batalla». El papa Benedicto llamó a cada parroquia una «familia de familias». En nuestra vida
parroquial habitual, nosotros cumplimos nuestra misión
cuando sobrellevamos la carga entre nosotros mismos y
nos ayudamos los unos a los otros a sanar las heridas.
Nadie debería sentirse solo u olvidado en una
parroquia. La Iglesia es la familia de los que encontraron a Jesús, que confiesan que él es el Señor, que
desean su gracia para darle forma a sus vidas y así
ayudarnos mutuamente para responderle. El camino de
Jesús nos concede la paciencia, el perdón y la confianza
para que podamos convertir y renovar nuestros corazones en formas que de lo contrario parecerían imposibles. Independientemente de las polémicas que pudieran presentarse en nuestra cultura, lo que otros pudieran hacer o fallar en hacer, Jesús y sus sacramentos
están siempre con nosotros y el amor es siempre nuestra misión. Vea el capítulo del catecismo de este mes

Youth Voices Summer Program: Ages 14-18, Fridays,

Cursillo #138 from Filadelfia
Cursillo #138 de Filadelfia
Group of ladies who participated in the workshop in
Spanish # 138, which took place from 21 to 24 May at the
Retreat House John Paul II, in Vineland, NJ. This large
group of women was accompanied by a spiritual director,
the Rev. Rafael Vargas; a deacon, the reverend Mariano
Torres; the lay team leader, Mrs. Maria Camacho; and
the team of ladies Delia Bastone, Carmen Caraballo,
Damaris Chévez, Maria Cruz, Reyna Genao, Maria Llanos.
The ladies that participated came from Philadelphia
parishes: St. Ambrose, St. Helena, St. Leo, St. Martin of
Tours, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Veronica and Visitation
BVM; from county parishes: St. Katharine, Chester; Fatima, Bucks; St. Lawrence, Upper Darby; St. Rocco, Chester, and St. Katharine Drexel -Chester..
The group of 29 new Cursillistas and their accompanying
team arrived full of grace and excited by his encounter
with the Lord. De Colores!
