the
benchmark
for Spanish Garnacha
Garnacha, as with Tempranillo, is one of the prime
red grapes of Spain. Outside its native country, it
has gone on to great success in France as the lead
grape in Rhône Valley’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape
as Grenache. In up-and-coming Spanish appellations such as Campo de Borja, it also takes pride
of place. Located south of Rioja along the Ebro
River, Campo de Borja has a continental climate,
meaning the region is very hot and arid during
summer and cold in winter. The intense summer
temperatures allow producers such as regional
leader Borsao to get the warmth-loving Garnacha
to fully ripen while maintaining complexity, creating full-bodied and smooth wines with plenty
of character.
BORSAO TRES PICOS GARNACHA 2010
DO Campo de Borja, Spain
273748 (XD) 750 mL $19.95
TASTING NOTE: One of my favorite offerings from
the Bodegas Borsao is the 6,000-case cuvee of the
2010 Tres Picos. Made from 100% Garnacha aged
in equal parts stainless steel and French oak, this is
the Bodegas Borsao’s interpretation of Chateauneuf
du Pape. (But when’s the last time you saw a bottle
of Chateauneuf du Pape priced [under $20] – about
30 years ago?) Deep notes of roasted herbs, sweet
black cherries and raspberries, peppers and spice
soar from the glass of this dark ruby/purple-tinged
wine. Full-bodied, rich, ripe, silky textured, pure and
long, this unbelievable value should drink well
for 3-4 years. Score: 92 (Robert Parker Jr.,

This sunny country struts it stuff with
a wealth of wines that deliciously
run the gamut from light to rich.

discovery. With its warm climate and unique geographical features,
Spain can (and does) produce nearly every wine style under the sun.
From the coastal regions influenced by the Atlantic in the north and
Mediterranean in the south, to the mountainous highlands of the
interior, to the mighty rivers that sweep through the country carving out
fine wine regions in their paths, the complexity of the Spanish
landscape is reflected in the diversity of its wines.
}
With such a rich range of wine regions and styles to explore – and at
such incredibly approachable prices – there really is something for
everyone. Here, we present the wines of Spain according to their styles,
from Light & Lively to Big & Bold to the versatile wines in between,
making it easy to find your favourites.

It may seem amazing that such a hot,
sun-soaked country as Spain produces
such a wealth of wonderfully fresh
and crisp wines. On the other hand
it’s easy to see why, living in such a
warm place, you’d want something that
offers refreshment. These light and
lively wines come from cooler coastal,
northerly or high-elevation areas, tend
to use grapes with high natural acidity,
and are typically made in stainless
steel. They pair well with seafood, fish,
light soups and salads, chicken and
turkey breast, or milder soft cheeses.

LEALTANZA WHITE 2011
CUATRO RAYAS VIÑEDOS
CENTENARIOS VERDEJO 2011
DOCa Rioja
(Bodegas Altanza)
EL MAESTRO SIERRA FINO SHERRY
DO Jerez
DO Rueda
The high altitude of the Rioja Alta makes
for lively interpretations of well-loved white
wine varietals.
The most famous white wines of Castilla
y León are crafted from the traditional
Verdejo grape in the Rueda region.
Producers in Jerez, home of Sherry and
situated on Spain’s southern coast, craft
their famed libation in styles ranging from
bone-dry to sweet. Fino is made in a light,
dry style.
TASTING NOTE: [100% Sauvignon
Blanc.] Pale yellow. Lemon curd and pink
grapefruit on the pungent nose. Lively
and refreshingly bitter, offering clear citrus
fruit flavors and a deeper note of pear
skin. Clean and nervy with a long, tangy
finish. Score: 88 (Josh Raynolds,
International Wine Cellar, Sept. 2012)
TASTING NOTE: (Translated from the
Spanish) We love the fruitiness of this
Verdejo, as it stops short of being aromatically over the top. The old vines (a few
centuries old) from Segovia from which it
is made give the wine volume and
smoothness on the palate. An elegant and
very balanced white. Score: 91 (Amaya
Cervera, vanitatis.com, March 16, 2012)
TASTING NOTE: This wine’s amplitude
builds on a creamy texture, bathed in nut
and salted almond flavors. The prick of
acidity, as if it had been recently sharpened,
borders the fruit with freshness. For a
plate of salted almonds. Score: 90

Wine grapes grow best in difficult conditions.
Stressing vines forces the roots deeper into the soil to
look for nutrients and water and, as a result, the vines
produce fewer, but more intensely flavoured grape
bunches. The Okanagan Valley pushes this idea to the
limits because it, along with nearby Similkameen, is
considered a semi-arid desert. (Yes, you can even see
tiny cacti growing on slopes throughout the region.)
The long expanse of the Okanagan, from Winfield in
the north to Osoyoos in the south, doesn’t produce
homogeneous wines, however. Its impressive bodies of

Valley (it passes through many lines of latitude) and
different climatic conditions, the exposure of the vineyards
(mostly west-facing), the high altitude and soil variations
– sandy loam in the south; denser with more gravel and
phosphorous content in the north – all help create
different styles of wines. In the north, aromatic varieties
such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer thrive. In the

While in the south around Oliver and Osoyoos, the
higher temperatures and slightly longer growing season
allow Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot to reach

TASTING NOTE: This [is a]
blend of Merlot, Syrah and the
Cabernets … Highly aromatic
and intense, the nose offers
boysenberry, black cherry,
spiced floral notes, and sweet
cedar. Built on a firm frame,
this dry, full-bodied blend
delivers depth and complexity,
flavours of cassis, black plum,
spice and herbs with notes of
toast carrying through the long
finish. Serve with robust meat
dishes; drink now to 2019.
Score: HHHHJ (Susan
Desjardins, winecurrent.com,

TASTING NOTE: 2008 Pinot
Noir is a study in sophistication
... Spending some time in
light French oak barrels has
given this wine toasty aromas
buoyed up by ripe cherries
and vanilla notes followed by
more yummy cherry and
vanilla flavours. What a great
match for a local charcuterie
and cheese plate with a little
crusty baguette on the side.
(Courtney Fossett, bclocalnews.com, June 8, 2011)
TASTING NOTE: There’s just
the slightest hint of earth
to this Okanagan pinot that
accentuates the cherry, white
pepper, plum and modest
toffee aromas. The concentration of fruit is impressive,
with deep ripe cherry flavours
at the core surrounded by
raspberry, red licorice, earth
and mocha-like tannins. It is
stylish and polished without
seeming too worked on – drink
now or hold onto a bottle for
a few years. Score: 91 (Ben
MacPhee-Sigurdson, wineaccess.ca, Sept. 27, 2012)
TASTING NOTE: [Shows why]
the winery built its reputation as
one of the Okanagan’s leading
Merlot producers. This wine
is juicy on the palate, with
concentrated flavours of plum
and black currant and with
spicy red fruit in the aroma
and on the finish. Score: 90

BURROWING
OWL ESTATE
WINERY
In 15 short years, Burrowing Owl has evolved from a fledgling
operation to one of the most keenly sought-after BC producers in
Canada. Proprietor Jim Wyse hit the jackpot when he discovered a disused
vineyard between the towns of Oliver and Osoyoos. On a hunch, he
planted Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes,
and proved his intuition was right – these are still Burrowing Owl’s
backbone varieties. The winery has since acquired vineyards closer to
Osoyoos and outside Keremeos in Similkameen, where they grow other
varieties. Add to this the opening of an award-winning restaurant
and boutique inn, and all signs point to a bright future. Woot, woot!

Gather the ingredients for an authentic evening
in honour of Robbie Burns – including,
of course, a fine Scotch (Highland or otherwise).
or Scots and would-be Scots, January 25th often means
recognizing the birth of Scotland’s favourite son, Robbie
Burns. To properly honour the beloved bard, you’ll need
just a few essential ingredients. Top-quality Scotch is a must for
sipping and toasting, and VINTAGES has some fine options,
featured here. While haggis isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it adds
authenticity and makes a hearty, warming supper on a cold
winter evening. (If you know a bagpiper, enlist them to pipe in the
steaming dish; if not, fire up a rousing recording.) When everyone’s
well fed, you and your guests can take turns toasting Burns and
reciting his poems. And though New Year’s Eve is by now a
distant memory, be sure to cap off the evening with a robust rendition of Auld Lang Syne, perhaps Burns’ most famous effort.

Sweet
surrender
Take a cue from centuries past and succumb
to the charms of this ambrosial liqueur.
THE INSIDE STORY
GOOD TASTE
Atholl Brose is the traditional nightcap of January
25th (Robbie Burns Day) and furthermore, dandy
in mojitos. The liqueur has a stormy past. In the
Scottish Highlands of 1475, Lord Iain MacDonald
planned to attack the Earl of Atholl and take over
his land. The Earl got wind of it and sent his lackeys
to fill MacDonald’s well with whisky, honey and
oatmeal while he slept. A bemusing strategy, but
it worked. You can image MacDonald’s men
pulling up the bucket of the well in the morning,
tasting the delicious “water” and perhaps superstitiously thinking it a sign of imminent victory.
According to legend, the men spent too much
time at the exciting well, and were shortly defeated;
but the irresistible blend of flavours lives on to
this day. You could say this whisky liqueur is from
“Auld Lang Syne,” meaning days long past, the
ballad traditionally sung on Robbie Burns Day. At
the line “…take a cup o’ kindness yet/For auld
lang syne” a wee dram of whisky liqueur would
be most appropriate, for this sort of “kindness”
is especially good.
At the 2012 World Whiskies Awards, Dunkeld
Atholl Brose won World’s Best Whisky Liqueur. A
smooth liqueur with balanced sweetness, Atholl
Brose has the aromatics of a Speyside single malt
touched with honey, herbs, and toasted oatmeal.

Best of
Both Worlds
What’s in a name? Shiraz and Syrah
are the same grape – the difference
is one of style. The former tends to
signify rich, full fruit character while
the latter points to food-friendly elegance and refinement. Winemakers
in Niagara are doubly blessed
because in those places where the
grape does well, the resulting wines
can combine the best of both. Sunny
summers bring out big ripe fruit,
while the lake-cooled vineyards keep
all that brilliant acidity and freshness
intact. In a hot vintage like 2010,
Jackson-Triggs can turn big-time
warmth and sunshine into beautifully
robust and complex Shiraz such
as this one. Yes, we wine lovers get
to have our cake and eat it, too.

The grapes for this vibrant, delicately sweet Riesling
are left on the vine longer than those for the

L.A. CETTO
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010
Guadalupe Valley, Baja California
TASTING NOTE: (Translated from the French)
One of the top 5 best values in Cabernet Sauvignon
priced around $12. Domaine L.A. Cetto is unquestionably the most famous producer in Mexico.
In 1926, Don Angelo Cetto, of Italian origin, settled
in the country. The estate is well established in
the celebrated Guadalupe Valley, which enjoys a
particularly favorable climate for viniculture: the
Pacific’s cold winds keep the nights cool, while the
days are extremely hot. The result is a juicy
cabernet sauvignon, very open, with aromas of ripe
fruit and surprising balance on the palate, demonstrating once again the talents of Cetto’s winemaker.

TASTING NOTE: Leather, tar, cherry, currants and
dark plum make appearances aromatically
speaking, while the palate shows a lithe medium
body, good ripeness and extraordinary poise.
Exceptional value from the stellar 2009 Bordeaux
vintage. A superb food wine, this will shine with
lamb stew or beef tenderloin. Can also be cellared
2-4 years. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2012)
TASTING NOTE: Generous 100% Cabernet Franc
with aromas of raspberry, plum, violets and black
cherry. Dry and robust. Well made and instantly
appealing. There’s just enough tannin to give
it some structure, and plenty of mouth-watering
acidity. Enjoy it tonight with grilled lamb. (VINTAGES

feel with sweet spice, loads of garrigue, saddle
leather, and pretty red fruit and fig characteristics,
medium to full body, loads of texture, and a dry,
classically styled finish that highlights fine tannin.

TASTING NOTE: Cortese, the great white wine
grape of Piedmont, achieves its finest expression
in the Gavi region. This one shows why. Aromas
on display include spring flowers, apricot, candied
lemon rind and pear. Dry and very fresh, with an
abundance of fruit on the palate too. The finish is
lively and enlivening. A great palate refresher, or
pair with seafood pasta in a light sauce of herbs

The historic white wine Vernaccia di San Gimignano
rose to prominence during the Renaissance and
remains one of Italy’s most renowned white wines.
Given the first-ever DOC designation in 1966
and upgraded to DOCG in 1993, Vernaccia di San

yet zippy white wines with a long, crisp finish. This
one’s a great palate-refresher and partner for

ODOARDI SAVUTO 2006
DOC
Primitivo is the Italian name for Zinfandel. This
wine has astounding complexity for the price.
TASTING NOTE: Odoardi’s 2006 Savuto is beautiful
in this vintage. A blend of 45% Gaglioppo,
15% Greco Nero, 15% Nerello Cappuccio, 15%
Magliocco Canino and 10% Sangiovese, this
plump, juicy red impresses for the integrity of its
fruit. Tobacco, mint, truffles and smoke add
further layers of complexity. This is a gorgeous effort
from Odoardi. Even better, it is a steal for the
money. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014. Score: 89

TASTING NOTE: This shows all the classic
character of modern primitivo from the Puglia

complexity at this price. The tannins are supple and

TASTING NOTE: The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino
saturates the palate with layers of sweet ripe
berries, flowers, licorice and savory herbs. This is a
decidedly flashy, fruit-forward style in this vintage
yet there is more than enough Sangiovese acidity
and tannin to balance some of the wine’s more
extroverted leanings. Though quite flashy at first,
the 2007 turns more classic and refined with
time in the glass. A vibrant finish rounds things out
in style. This is a terrific showing from Caprili.

Two more
things to love
about winter.
Everyone loves
winter, right?
The crisp, bracing days, the cold, snowy nights, the frantic
last-minute sunshine-getaway planning …
and the hearty comfort foods that taste even better with a
glass of velvety red wine. Well-priced and food-friendly,
this Australian Shiraz and Spanish Garnacha deliciously fit the bill,
and pack enough muscle to beat back winter’s chill.
(just another reason to pray for snow)

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? Do you need to know
before selecting a wine? Not exactly. Here’s where this
2010 Wakefield Shiraz comes in. Its full, juicy berry and
black pepper flavours will dramatize all kinds of robust
foods from A to Z (Angus beef to ziti pasta) and in
between (barbecued meats, grilled eggplant, spicy
chicken). What’s that? You’re a sommelier? You don’t say!?
Wine Access magazine named this wine one of the
Value Picks of 2012.
