A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Holy Apostles Parish Family,
Everything is gearing up for another year!
School is in full swing, so now we start our
Family Faith Formation, Youth Ministry, That
Man is You, bible studies, and much more.
Please be patient with us going through the
time/talent ministry sign-up sheets. Kathy is
making many corrections to keep our lists
reliable.
I hope you take advantage of all the opportunities to get involved and your children in
Family Faith Formation and Youth Ministry.
We are blessed with so many good people
working on these teams to pull off the opening events.
Have a Blessed Week!
Father Paul
WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC
TRADITIONS EXPLAINED
Every week in our bulletin I see a Mass on
Sunday for the people of the parish. Is it
there to fill in an intention, or is someone
requesting it every week?
The pastor of a parish is charged with the
well-being of the community. There are many
aspects of this task, including the physical,
spiritual, and social concerns of maintaining
and building a community of faith. Each
week, by church law, the pastor offers Mass
on Sunday for the people of the parish. It is a
tangible and practical way that the pastor
prays for those entrusted to his care. No one
requests it, nor is it offered only when there
is an open intention. In fact, the pastor may
not accept a stipend for it. The spiritual
needs of the people are the primary concern
of the pastor. His prayer for them is the first
way he cares for them. You may also see
Mass intentions for those listed in a memorial, or deceased members of the parish, or
past members of a group or organization.
These too are ways the pastor remembers
the needs of all the members of his parish,
asking the Lord to bless and protect them,
bringing us all to eternal life.
WE OFFER OUR PRAYERS FOR:
All the homeless, the unemployed, the military, the addicted, the
grieving, the imprisoned, and the physically and emotionally ill.

Your Gifts Help SVdPS Fill Gaps in Income
After suffering a stroke, a local middle-aged man lost his
ability to work temporary jobs, his primary source of income. With little income, he was unable to pay his cell
phone bill, a phone needed to
contact and schedule his many
doctor's appointments. The St.
Vincent de Paul Society helped
him apply for Safelink while also
paying for his phone service until
the new emergency and free
phone service is activated. Vincentians also assisted him
in getting a copy of his birth certificate from another state
so that he could apply for disability. This is my commandment,
that you love one another as I have loved you. Jn 15:12
St. Peregrine Cancer Support Group Meeting
This multi-parish group of cancer survivors was formed to
offer a place for individuals, families, caregivers, and anyone concerned about cancer to meet with others to share
information, stories and pray together. They will meet next
on Tuesday, September 13, at 10 AM in St. Ambrose/St.
Catherine rooms in Apostles Bay. Location of the meetings
rotate from Holy Apostles, St. John in Johnsburg, St. Patrick in McHenry and St. Peter in Spring Grove. For details
contact Jeanne Fraser at 815-388-0164 or
[email protected]. All are welcome and
invited to attend.
Offer Your Intentions with Candles
Four candles surround the Blessed Sacrament in the All
Saints Perpetual Adoration Chapel, each burning for 14
days. Request your own personal intentions for their duration by contacting the Parish Office at 815-385-5673. The
suggested donation is $15 per candle. From September
11 through 24, with these candles, your prayers have been
requested by Debbie Byrne, the Traskaski Family,
Alejandra Rivera and Jean Kieres.
Be a Eucharistic Minister
Serving as a Eucharistic Minister is a rewarding and gratifying way of sharing your
time and talent with the parish. Distributing
the Precious Body and Blood of our Lord to
fellow parishioners is humbling and fulfilling. Please prayerfully consider joining
this ministry by attending one of the following formation sessions:

Tuesday, September 20, 7 to 8:30 PM or

Wednesday, October 5, 7 to 8:30 PM.
Both sessions will take place in church. These formation
sessions are for all who are interested in becoming new
Eucharistic Ministers. You are required to attend only ONE
of the above sessions. Please contact Kathy Gulvas at the
Parish Office at 815-388-0513 or kgulvas@the
churchofholyapostles.org if you plan on attending a session.

conducting our regular meeting, taking pictures for

provided while we play Bunco. Please RSVP to [email protected] or call Marge
Pizarek at 815-455-2901.
Holy Apostles Mission Day—October 22
Many of us would love to reach out and be the face
of God by serving others in need but
are unable to take a mission trip to do
so. Mission Day is an opportunity for
everyone to serve people in our community just for a day. Set aside
Saturday, October 22, to work on a
team of parish members to give a
hand to someone who needs assistance maintaining
their homes. Register online on the home page of
our website thechurchofholyapostles.org.
Are you or do you know someone in our community
(need not be parish members) who needs help at
their home with cleaning, yard work/landscaping,
painting, or light electrical, plumbing or construction
repairs? Let us add your needs to our “to do” list on
Mission Day. (We cannot guarantee that all requests
for help will be met.) Contact Joe Filpi at 815385-0921 or [email protected]
with your requests for help.

New Adult Faith Formation Studies
Barb Thomas, Our Woman of Inspiration
We invite you to broaden your faith knowledge with
these three new adult formation studies:
The Book of Revelation: The Lamb and the Beasts
(Women’s Study) The purpose of Revelation’s visionary
journey is to exhort its listeners to faithfulness and to
offer them hope. We are encouraged to see the world
with sacramental vision, to know that God dwells at the
heart of creation and that Christ reigns over the world and
its future. See how the Lamb has conquered the beasts.
Starts Monday, Sept. 12, 9 to 10:30 AM, for 9 weeks
Facilitator: Geri Condon Cost of workbook: $13.50.
Come celebrate Barb Thomas, our parish’s 2016 Woman
of Inspiration, at a banquet next Sunday, September 18, at
4 PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 1023 McHenry
Ave., Crystal Lake, where all the Women of Inspiration of
the McHenry Deanery will be honored. Tickets are $25
each and may be purchased in Holy Apostles Gift Store on
weekends or in the Parish Office during the week.
The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy
A prophet speaks on behalf of God to his people. They
were sent at critical times to the “spiritually hard-ofhearing”, to call the people
back to their covenant relationship with God. Identify the
prophets, what their role was
and how to read and understand
their messages. Started
Wednesday, Sept. 7 (still time
to join!) 1 to 2:30 PM, for 11
week video and workbook.
Facilitator: Jeanne Fraser Cost of materials: $25.00
The Pivotal Players by Bishop Robert Barron, Volume I:
This is a multi-part film series that illumines a handful
of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only
shaped the life of the Church but changed the course
of civilization. This 13 week study begins on Monday,
September 19, from 7 to 9 PM in Archangels/Angels.

Holy Apostles Supper Happenings (H.A.S.H.)
What better way to meet new people, form new friendships
and spend an enjoyable night out than to gather around the
dinner table and share fellowship and a
special meal? Each HASH evening features a new and exciting menu and
each member contributes to the final
result. From salad and soup to the
main course and the dessert surprise,
the meals are great, the dinner festive
and the friendships lasting. There is a cocktail hour preceding dinner that brings all HASH folks together followed by
dinner at three or four of the member homes.
HASH Ministry welcomes all, single or married. Friends are
welcome ! AND HERE IS SOMETHING NEW—plans for this
season include three or four dinners, PLUS special events
including a hayride, a dinner-theatre event and an evening
on the river. Come on, join up, enjoy! Call Jackie Elliott at
815-363-9629 for all the details.
HASH Invites All to a Hayride/Bonfire
Come join HASH for good old-fashioned fun at Royal Oaks
Orchards in Hebron on Saturday, October 15, at 6:30 PM
for a tractor ride into the orchards and then a bonfire!
HASH (Holy Apostles Supper Happenings) is organizing the
event. Join us for hot dogs and s’more’s by the bonfire for
just $10 per person. All are welcome! Call Jackie at 815363-9629 for reservations and information.

Thanks for Aluminum Donations
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
Thank you to everyone who has donated cans and
other aluminum items and their time to our Youth
Ministry aluminum collection. The money raised from
the recycled aluminum has helped send dozens of
teens on mission trips and pilgrimages to the March
for Life in Washington DC. It is important to give
special thanks to Mike Henningfield who built the
trailer and on countless occasions, drove it to the
recycling facility and emptied it by hand. Youth
Ministry will be retiring the trailer and at the end of
September we will no longer be accepting donations.
Thank you for your generous donations and May
God bless you abundantly.
RCIA is a process through which people learn about the
Catholic faith. RCIA is for you if:

You have never been Baptized;

You have been Baptized as a
Catholic but not received any other
sacraments;

You have been Baptized in another
faith;

You have been Baptized, received
your First Communion, but have not been Confirmed in
the Catholic faith; or

You are a Catholic who has been Confirmed but
wants to learn more about your faith. Anyone is welcome to any of our RCIA classes at any time!
Beginning on September 20, classes will be held on
Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 PM in the Family Center. Contact John Jelinek at 815-388-0155 or jjelinek@thechurch
ofholyapostles.org for more information.

Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
8 Consejos del Papa Francisco
Para tener éxito en el matrimonio. La oportunidad era
inmejorable.
