Please follow these instructions:
• Do not eat or drink anything four to six hours before your
exam. Eating or drinking anything (besides water) could
potentially interfere with your imaging results. Water is
allowed; please arrive fully hydrated.
• Please do not schedule any appointments for six hours after
this test. This includes lab draws; if you need lab work please
have it done PRIOR to your PET Scan.
• Please take any prescribed medications unless instructed by
your physician not to.
• No gum or mints 24 hours before exam.
• Avoid strenuous exercise or activity 24 hours before your
exam.
• If you are claustrophobic, please notify the Marian PET/CT
Center at (805) 346-3470.
• Eat a low carbohydrate or no carbohydrate diet the evening
before your exam. It is recommended to eat meat, nuts,
vegetables, and/or eggs the evening before the exam.
Do not consume bread, rice, pasta, cereal, beans, fruit,
tortillas or sugar drinks the night before the exam.
• Do not wear anything metallic (e.g., underwire bras, belts,
zippers or buttons).
• Please notify the Marian PET/CT Center staff if you might
be pregnant or are currently breast feeding.
What should I expect when I arrive?
• When you arrive, we will take a review of your history and
any past exams.
• For the PET portion of the exam, you will receive an injection of radioactive material similar to that which is used
for bone scans and other nuclear medicine exams. PET
radiopharmaceuticals lose their radioactivity very quickly
and only very small amounts are injected. In all cases, the
majority of radioactivity will be eliminated from the body
approximately six hours after injection.
• For most tests, you will have to wait for the radiopharmaceu­
tical to distribute itself throughout your body, which typically takes 30 minutes to an hour. During this time you will be
asked to relax.
•D
uring the exam, you will lie very still on a table that will
move slowly through the scanner as it acquires the information needed to generate diagnostic images.
How long will all this take?
• The PET/CT scan should last between 20 and 45 minutes.
The exam procedure can vary depending on what we are
looking for and what we discover along the way. Plan to
spend one to three hours with us.
What happens after the exam?
• Unless you’ve received special instructions, you will be able
to eat and drink immediately; drinking lots of fluids soon
after the exam will help remove any of the radiopharmaceutical that may still be in your system.
• Results of your exam will be made available to your
physician the following business day.
Safety of PET/CT exams
• Be assured that PET/CT exams are safe and effective
diagnostic procedures. The radiopharmaceuticals used in
PET exams does not remain in your system long. However,
to be extra safe avoid close contact with others, especially
children and pregnant women, four hours after your exam.

• Consuma una dieta baja en o sin carbohidratos en la cena
antes del examen. La noche anterior al examen se recomienda
comer carne, nueces, vegetales y/o huevos. No coma pan,
arroz, pasta/fideos, cereales, granos, frutas, tortillas o bebidas
azucaradas la noche antes del examen.
• No use nada metálico (por ejemplo, sostenes con soportes de
metal, cinturones, cierres/cremalleras o botones).
• Por favor notifique al Centro PET/CT de Marian si sospecha
que puede estar embarazada o si esta amamantando a su bebé.
¿Qué debo esperar cuando llegue?
• Cuando llegue revisaremos su historial y cualquier examen
anterior.

• Para la parte de la PET del examen usted recibirá una inyec­
ción de material radioactivo similar al que se usa en las
tomo­grafías óseas y otros exámenes de medicina nuclear. Los
radiofármacos utilizados en las PET pierden la radioactividad
rápidamente y sólo se inyectan cantidades muy pequeñas. En
cualquier caso, el cuerpo eliminará la mayoría de la radioactividad aproximadamente seis horas después de la inyección.
• Para la mayoría de los exámenes, usted tendrá que esperar
a que el radiofármaco se distribuya por sí mismo por todo su
cuerpo. Esto típicamente toma entre 30 minutos y una hora.
Durante este tiempo se le pedirá que se relaje.
• Durante el examen, usted yacerá muy quieto sobre una
­camilla que se moverá lentamente a través del escáner a
­medida que adquiere la información necesaria para generar
las imágenes diagnósticas.
¿Cuánto tomará todo esto?
• El examen PET/CT debería durar entre 20 y 45 minutos. El
procedimiento del examen puede variar dependiendo de lo
que estemos buscando y lo que descubramos mientras lo hacemos. Planifique estar entre 1 y 3 horas con nosotros.
¿Qué sucede después del examen?
• A menos que haya recibido instrucciones especiales, usted será
capaz de comer y beber de inmediato; beber bastantes líquidos
inmediatamente después del examen le ayudará a remover
cualquier radiofármaco que todavía quede en su cuerpo.
• Los resultados del examen estarán disponibles para su médico
al siguiente día laboral.
La seguridad de los exámenes PET/CT
• Tenga la seguridad de que los exámenes PET/CT son procedi­
mientos de diagnóstico seguros y efectivos. Los radiofármacos utilizados en exámenes PET no se quedan en su cuerpo
por mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, como medida adicional de
seguridad evite el contacto con otros, especialmente niños y
mujeres embarazadas, hasta 4 horas después del examen.
