FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“YEAR OF FAITH”
Mass Intentions
Today’s Gospel Reflection
1st Reading: Dt 30:10-14 * Psalm 69:14, 17, 30-31, 33-34, 36, 37
or Psalm 19:8-11 * 2nd Reading: Col 1:15-20 * Gospel: Lk 10:25-37
LIVING GOD’S COMMANDS
The first reading forms part of
Moses’ farewell discourse, a call to the
people to return to God. It is not a
legalistic summons; rather, it is an
appeal to heart and soul. It outlines a
command that is not impossible to follow,
or too difficult to undertake, or too expensive. Look into your
hearts, says Moses; there you will find what to do.
Paul sees Jesus Christ as the image of God, the agent of
creation and preservation. We sense, in his words, things
profound: “dominions or principalities or powers.” But in the midst
of that, Paul keeps his attention on Jesus Christ, head of the
church. It is in Christ that we find fullness and reconciliation—in
the blood of the cross.
Luke’s Gospel illustrates the double commandment of love
with the story of the Good Samaritan. The story is a radical one,
for it comes to focus on the question of who my “neighbor” is. That
neighbor is not identified with any group, but rather by the scope of
our compassion.

“Christ Jesus . . . is the head of the body, the church.”
— Colossians 1:15, 18
VIVIR LOS MANDAMIENTOS DE
DIOS
profundas: “gobiernos, autoridades, poderes y fuerzas sobrenaturales”.

“YEAR OF FAITH”
ST. MICHAEL CHURCH
PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO
Pastor’s Message
Dear Parishioners and friends,
Faith enables us to recognize Christ, whose love impels us to assist him whenever he “becomes
our neighbor” along the journey of life. Supported by faith, we are filled with hope as we recommit ourselves
to bear witness in the world, awaiting “new heavens and a new earth” in which righteousness dwells
(2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1) (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 14).
In summertime, according to the Gershwin classic, the living’s supposed to be easy. But not the journey of faith! Luke’s
July Gospels present Jesus’ challenging expectations for faithful disciples: Travel light; bless others with peace and healing; let
your lives proclaim, even before your words do, that God’s kingdom is at hand. Don’t ask, “Who is my neighbor?” Instead, make
yourself a “good Samaritan,” a neighbor to anyone in need. Serve others selflessly like Martha, but, like Mary, balance loving
service of Christ in others with quiet listening at the Master’s feet. With childlike simplicity, make the Lord’s Prayer your own.
Persevere in asking, seeking, knocking at the door, the door opened wide in this Year of Faith to bestow our heavenly Father’s
first and best gift, the Holy Spirit.
Mission: Begin each day by committing myself to the mission Christ has entrusted to me; be a neighbor to those in need;
serve others lovingly; spend time in quiet prayer with Jesus; pray for the young people gathering with the Holy Father in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, for World Youth Day, July 23–28.

Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community!
“Give love in action. Our works of love are nothing but works of peace. Let us do them with greater
love and efficiency: each in his or her own work, in daily life, at home and with one’s neighbor. Be happy
and at peace. Accept whatever He gives and give whatever He takes with a big smile.” - Mother Teresa

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle. Be our
protection against the wickedness and
snares of the devil. May God rebuke
him, we humbly pray; and do Thou,
O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the
Divine Power of God - cast into hell,
Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam
throughout the world seeking the ruin
of souls. Amen.
