HOMELESS CHILDREN AND YOUTH
HAVE THE RIGHT TO A FREE,
APPROPRIATE PUBLIC EDUCATION…
If you and your child:





Live in a shelter or motel;
Share housing with relatives or others because you lost your
housing or cannot afford housing;
Live in a campground, car, abandoned building, or other inadequate
shelter;
Do not have a permanent address and/or permanent housing; or
Live on the street;
Your child has the right to:





Immediately enroll in and attend school without having health
and school records available;
Enroll in the school serving the address where you are living
temporarily, or in the school attended when permanently housed,
whichever is feasible and in your child’s best interest;
Receive transportation to and from school when feasible;
Participate in school-related activities and receive other
services, including free school meals; and
Utilize the dispute resolution process if you have a grievance.

Si usted y su niño/a:
• Viven en un albergue, refugio o motel/hotel;
• Viven con parientes u otras personas debido a que perdieron su

vivienda, o no pudieron continuar pagando el arriendo o hipoteca
de su hogar;
Viven en un parque para acampar, en un auto, en un edificio
abandonado u otro alojamiento inadecuado;
No tienen una dirección permanente y/o una vivienda
permanente; o
Viven en la calle;
Su niño/a tiene derecho a:
• Inscribirse y asistir a la escuela inmediatamente, aunque no tenga
disponibles los expedientes académicos o de salud del alumno;
• Inscribirse en la escuela que le corresponde al área donde vive

ahora, o en la escuela donde estaba asistiendo cuando la familia
tenía un hogar permanente, cualquiera que se determine como la
opción más viable y la que le traiga más beneficios al estudiante;
Recibir servicios de transporte para ir y regresar de la escuela
cuando esto sea viable y posible;
Participar en actividades relacionadas con la escuela y recibir
otros servicios necesarios, incluyendo alimentos escolares
gratis; y
Utilizar el procedimiento adecuado para tramitar y resolver
conflictos si tiene una queja.
