Application The Frontek ventilated facade system is designed for the outside cladding of frontages through attachment to a metallic sub structure by means of anchoring fixtures. This system does not affect the project’s stability. Modern mechanical attachment systems have totally revolutionised the fitting of ceramic onto frontages. For the support of the ceramic facing, Greco Gres presents two attachment systems that have been fully designed and developed at the Group’s research centre. Both systems are very easy to install and the difference between them is that the attachment system may involve cramps, as in Greco Gres FVI Plus, or the use of horizontal guides, as in Greco Gres FVI Superplus. Construction advantages: • Speed of execution • Lightness of the system on the wall face • Ease of installation • Replacement of individual tiles • Low maintenance • Excellent stability of the ceramic facing, without the risk of cracking or detachment of pieces. • Efficient thermal insulation. • Improved acoustic insulation. • Elimination of condensation. • Full coverage on the frontage Greco Gres FVI Plus Gre co Gres FVI Superplus 15 16 técnico - technical grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. Greco Gres FVI Plus FVI Plus – Attachment with cramp Basic components: 1. FRONTEK facing panel 2. Vertical aluminium section 3. 4x4 stainless steel attachment cramps 4. Stainless steel self-blocking screws 5. Support and holding brackets Greco Gres has designed a self-supporting attachment that enables the ceramic panels to be fitted by means of a stain less steel cramp which incorporates the latest technology. 17 18 técnico - technical grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. 1 2 Perfil vertical de aluminio Vertical aluminium section 4 Grapas de fijación 4x4 Inox 4x4 stainless steel attachment cramps 3 3 2 1 Tornillos autoblocantes Inox Stainless steel self-blocking screws Compared to other similar systems existing on the market, the new generation of Greco Gres ventilated frontages pro vides an exclusive piece that does not need to undergo any cutting or drilling in order to be attached to the cramp, where by its properties remain intact once fitted onto the structure. This avoids any possible weakening that may be caused to the fitted tiles by other attachment systems that require cutting, drilling or grooves for their assembly on the structure. The system allows for the attachment of four ceramic pan els by means of a cramp that is used to hold the two lower pieces and to support and hold the two upper pieces. The cramps are attached to a structure of vertical aluminium sec tions by means of self-blocking stainless steel screws. 1. Vertical aluminium section 2. 4x4 sta i n l ess steel attachment clips 3. Self-locking sta i n l ess steel screws 4. Support and rete ntion bra c kets The fitting of the cramps requires the marking of a refer ence level line for every 2 or 3 pieces. Once the level has been marked, the cramp is fitted and then the piece is attached. It is advisable to mount the strips horizontally, in stretches, tak ing special care with out-of-squares, subsiding and off-levels. 4 Ménsulas de sustentación y retención Support and holding brackets It is advisable to maintain a minimum separation of 6 mil limetres between the FTK ceramic panels in order to allow for possible movement in the system. The entire system has been designed to be complement ed by means of a chemical bonding between the vertical sections and the Frontek pieces, as this will not only avoid vibrations of any kind but also vastly increase its ability to absorb impacts and sudden movements of the piece, in addition to keeping it in place in the event of breakage. These products developed for our piece have been certi fied as non-aging. This system is very versatile and quick to install, besides pro viding an excellent quality/price ratio. It has been developed with a view to making the structure as light as possible, whereby this attachment system only adds 1.5 Kg/m2 of weight to the piece, which means a ventilated frontage weighing only 26.74 Kg/m2 19 20 técnico - technical grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. The next step is to proceed with the ass ctural system, consisting of the support and holding brackets, the vertical sections – called struts - and the horizontal ones – or crossbars, these latter only in the case of horizontal attachment. The process begins with the attachment of the support brackets. One holding bracket is required for each strut, which will always be mounted on its upper part. Each section is joined to the next, which in turn is to be held by its corresponding support bracket (whose purpose is to with stand gravitational forces). The number of support brackets required will depend on the section’s design, but the standard laid down for our system involves a distance of 3 metres between each one – equal to the height of one floor. In conjunction with the support brackets, the holding brackets are responsible for withstanding the force of the wind and they are fitted in staggered parallel rows (alternating their attachment to the right and left of the section). Attachment will be made of as many holding brackets as required depending on the inertia of the sections delivered and the wind pressures that are to be borne. In general, the layout of the system is so designed that the standard distance between brackets is 1.5 metres or 1 metre (depend ing on the height of the building). This ensures ease and speed of assembly and a minimum deployment of labour, as only one hold ing bracket needs to be fitted between the support ones. The process described is applicable to either one of the two Greco Gres ventilated frontage systems. The steps to be followed as of this point will be different according to the attachment system we have chosen. grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. 27 28 técnico - technical grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. Conditions of use and assembly Assembly is to be undertaken according to the instructions and technical advice provided by Greco Gres Internacional, or by specialist firms that have been endorsed by the Group. A list of these companies is available for customer reference. The proper installation of an integral ventilated facade system requires a detailed study of the project’s design in order to iden tify the anchorage points. At this stage of the study, it is essential to know what mate rials are going to make up the inner facades in order to ensure compatibility between materials and check that they are tough enough to take the anchorages and withstand the loads trans mitted. In the case of refurbishment work, it is always advisable to conduct preliminary tests. A draughtsperson will be responsible for arranging and guar anteeing a geometric distribution of the facade. His drawings will serve as the basis for the laying out, an operation that is to be undertaken with great care, as the proper performance of the work and a perfect finish depend on this. It is also important at this stage to consider the trimmings and the preparation of the pieces. The next stage involves the assembly of the structural arrangement, consisting of the support and retention brackets, the vertical sections – called stays - and the horizontal ones – or crossbars. The process begins with the mounting of the support brack ets. One support bracket is required for each stay that is always to be mounted on its upper part Each section fits into the next one, which is to be mounted with its corresponding support bracket (whose role is to with stand gravitational forces). The number of support brackets required will depend on the design of the section, but the stan dard laid down for our arrangement is 3 metres between each one – which is the same as the height between floors. The purpose of the retention brackets is, along with the sup port brackets, to withstand the force of the wind, being mount ed in a staggered arrangement (alternating their attachment to the right and to the left of the section). Mounting is to be made of as many retention brackets as required according to the iner tia of the sections delivered and the wind pressures to be with stood. In general, the system has been dimensioned so that the stan dard distance between brackets is 1.5 metres. This guarantees quick and easy assembly and a minimum amount of labour, as only one retention bracket is required between each support. 29 30 técnico - technical grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. STEPS 1. Preparation of the raw materials 2. Milling 3. Spray drying 4. Mixing 5. Extrusion 6. Drying 7. Firing 8. Additional processing 9. Sorting and packing Preparation of the raw materials The Frontek manufacturing process begins with a meticulous selection of the raw materials that make up the paste. Clays, silica, feldspars and pigments are carefully chosen and subject ed to a prior process of standardisation to ensure the seam lessness of their specifications. Milling Once an initial mixture of the ceramic paste’s different compo nents has been made, it is put through a process of damp milling using continuous or discontinuous ball mills. Los equipos que se utilizan co n s tan de tres by the mill consists of particles smaller than 200 microns. The humidity content present in the suspension tends to range around 0.35-0.40 kg of water/kg of dry solid. Spray drying Spray drying is a procedure for drying the slurry (material produced by the milling), whereby a suspension sprayed in fine droplets comes into contact with hot air to produce a solid product with low water content. Following the spray drying process, the water content in the slurry is reduced to 0.03-0.04 kg of water/kg of dry solid. Mixing The shaping and raw drying of the pieces begins with the mixing, a procedure that involves the thorough mixing of the slurry with the sprayed powder, which produces a malleable paste that is easy to mould by extrusion. Extrusion In short, the process of shaping the pieces by extrusion involves passing a column of malleable paste through a mould that forms a constant section piece. The equipment used has three basic parts: the drive system, the mould and the cutter. The drive system is a screw arrangement. Drying Once shaped, the ceramic piece proceeds to a drying stage in order to reduce the humidity content to suitably low levels (0.2-0.5%), to ensure the firing stages proceed correctly. The pieces are inserted on several levels inside the drier and are displaced horizontally over rollers. The hot air that comes into countercurrent contact with the pieces is produced by burners located on the sides of the drier. Firing The firing process involves subjecting the pieces to a thermal cycle at 1,200ºC, during which a series of reactions take place that alter their microstructure, imbuing them with the required end properties. It is one of the more important steps in the Frontek manufac turing process, as it defines a large number of the ceramic product’s specifications: mechanical strength, dimensional sta bility, resistance to chemical agents, ease of cleaning, fire resistance, etc. Additional processing Between the drying and firing steps, a sandblast is applied to lacerate the surface to give it its texture. Sorting and packing The final step consists in sorting and packing the pieces. The sorting is carried out automatically and involves mechanical equipment, digital calibre dimensional control and surface inspection of the pieces. The result is a controlled product regarding its dimensional consistency, surface appearance and mechanical and chemical specifications. The technology applied in the manufacture of its products, the quality endorsed by the most demanding international cer tificates and its excellent service place Greco Gres in the van guard of the global ceramics industry. 35 36 técnico - technical grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. Insulation The ventilated facade in itself constitutes a barrier that provides thermal and acoustic insulation and improves the condi tions of weatherproofing, which means that when mounted on a wall with a chamber or insulation it does not require any fur ther means of insulation. When use is made of the insulating properties of the ventilated facade to eliminate a double wall, we can improve its insulating specifications by adding some form of insulation (sprayed foams, rock wools, fibreglass, etc) between the supporting frontage and the ventilated facade. The assembly process will depend upon the type of insulator and the system of attachment used, although it is always advisable to at least mount the stays first. Regarding the application of insulation, standard practice involves mounting the brackets first, then the insulation and finally attaching the stays and continuing with the assembly of the facade. The type of insulation will depend on who applies it and how, as this will have a bearing on both the process and the cost (if it is nailed on by its flounces this is done after the stays have been mounted), so we have no further comment to make until we have more information. Observations The Frontek piece has longitudinal sections on the upper and lower edges that fit tightly together and ensure greater strength, which means that no cutting or drilling is required during assembly. This guarantees that its properties remain intact even when anchored, using either of the two systems, so avoiding the possible weakening that can affect other types of tiles fitted with dif ferent attachment systems. We are awaiting the results of tests made on the joint ventilated facade system. Greco Gres Internacional is currently immersed in the process involving the Technical Approval Document (DIT), awarded by the “Eduardo Torroja” Institute to certify the favourable results obtained in its laboratories. Until these specific tests have been completed on the system as a whole, the good results pre sented by the Frontek ventilated facade in the various projects in which it has been used vouch for its reliability. grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. 41 grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. 2 The next operation to be carried out is the laying of the 304 stainless steel cramps, which are used for supporting the pieces. To this end, self-drilling screws with a flat head to ensure that the cramps are fastened quickly and firmly to the vertical sec tion are used. The starter cramp was specially designed for this purpose and is the first to be fastened. This is followed by the standard cramp designed to hold the ends of the four pieces that shape the corner. In addition to these two models of cramps, a wide variety is available for different needs as regards crowning or finishing and special shapes. The Frontek piece’s special design, featuring a slot along its horizontal edges, facilitates the laying of the pieces. The lower notch is inserted in the lower cramps and then one of the upper cramps is put in place to support and thus prevent the piece from turning, and keeping it in place. The upper cramp is not put in place until the next piece is fitted so that the cramp holds both of them. 3 The Frontek PLUS system allows for the use of state-of-theart chemical adhesives with adherence capacity of up to 12 kg. per cm2, an elasticity module of 200% and practically null wear. Application of these adhesives is particularly interesting to prevent the loads from being concentrated in the cramp sup port area, ensuring that all the loads applied to the piece (including suction, pressure and impact loads) are uniformly spread over the length of the section. Likewise, it removes the vibration effect and ensures the proper fastening of the ceram ic piece in the event of breakage. The result is a solid structure in which the Frontek piece affords an unbeatable aesthetic finish with excellent planimetry and uniform joints, including a selection of vertical joints rang ing from 2 to 8 mm and horizontal joints being either 6 or 8 mm. depending on the cramp chosen. 3b 3e 3c 3f 3d 3g 3a 49 50 técnico - technical grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. · They support the piece and transmit the weight to the points of union with the vertical section. · They transmit the wind loads to the vertical sections while ensuring that deformation is not in excess of 1/3000 of the span between supports for the vertical sections. · The horizontal section is fastened to the vertical section by means of self-drilling screws placed on the slots on the section for the said purpose while ensuring that the lower one is not exactly under the upper one. · It is important to underline the special care that needs to be taken to ensure the perfect horizontality of these sections. It may therefore be recommendable to use laser equipment. The distance between vertical sections is that set by the track between pieces. Hence the importance of the same. · The correct finish of the façade depends to a large extent on these two factors. All the horizontal sections are now ready for the clips for attaching the pieces. The special plate making sys tem implies that, during the assembly process, the laying of the same pre vents the lower piece from falling and waits until the upper piece is laid. Once it has been laid, it is imposible for the section clip to come loose although it does allow sliding through the horizontal section if the proper tools are used. A special starter section was designed for the starting areas. The piece is attached without the need to place the clip and offers a more aesthetic finish in its lower part if visible. This section can likewise be used in dinteles, vierteaguas y the upper crowning. This section can also be used on lintels, weather ing pieces and for resolving the upper finish. 4 The Frontek piece’s special design, featuring a slot along its horizontal edges, facilitates the laying of the pieces. The lower notch is inserted in the projection of the starter section or the clip section. Once placed on the upper horizontal section, the support clip that holds it in place is attached. 4b The Frontek system allows for the use of state-of-the-art chemical adhesives with adherence capacity of up to 12 Kg por cm2, an elasticity module of 200% and practically null wear. The application of these adhesives ensures that all the loads applied to the piece (including suction, pressure and impact loads) are uniformly spread over the length of the section. Likewise, it removes the vibration effect, the travel or lateral shifting effect of the pieces, and ensures the proper fastening of the ceramic piece in the event of breakage. The result is a solid structure in which the Frontek piece has a dual purpose: · It affords an unbeatable aesthetic finish with excellent planimetry and uniform joints offering a selection of vertical joints ranging from 2 to 8 mm and horizontal joints rang ing from 5 to 10 mm. It likewise allows for continuous joints or staggered joints, cen tred or not, depending on the instructions of the statutorily appointed site manager or client. · In addition, the piece helps to brace the whole structure due to its excellent resist ance properties resulting from its alveolar design. Its laying on the grid blocks any lat eral movements and affords rigidity to the entire structure while not affecting the blocking of any movement associated with dilatation or the absorption of vibrations. 6b 61 grupo greco gres internacional, s.l. En ve nta n as o huecos es importa nte res p etar simet r í as o s i m i l i t u d es. Para fa c i l i tar es teproceso es aconsejable marcar la posición de las piezas con ra l l as de zulete. 1 1. The first step is to make a general check on the state of the wall base to assess its condition. Repairs will have to be made if any areas are found to be loose. The next step is to consider the arrangement of the pieces. This is an extremely important operation for achieving the best end result. To do so, mark the position of each one of the pieces trying to avoid small pieces and pistol-shaped cuts. It is important to follow symmetries or correspondences on windows and hollow open sections. To make this process eas ier, it is advisable to mark the position of the pieces with strips of mastic. Next, and guided by the positioning marks, drill the upper part of the row of pieces to be attached, bearing in mind that the first row, when resting on the ground, does not need a clamp on its lower part. Place the mesh wall plug in the drill hole and leave it ready for applying the chemical product. Once a stretch long enough for using up a full load of the chemical product has been prepared, apply adhesive cement to both the wall and the piece to glue it into position. The next stage is to mount the attachment clamps, introduc ing the chemical product into the mesh holder, in the recom mended quantities in each case for the subsequent installation of the clamp. The pin on the clamp is flexible enough to enable it to be lift ed, so making it easier to insert it in the groove and to then drop it down until the inside face of the clamp rests on the piece. This is an essential operation for providing leeway when upholding the joint. 6 Repeat this procedure with all the other parts until the area of tiling has been completed. The system is designed so that a single clamp placed at the corner can hold two pieces, and therefore save on clamps. To avoid wasting chemical product, as it does dry up inside the wall plug, it is important to have a sufficiently large area of tiling in place in order to go on fitting the clamps until a full car tridge of chemical product has been used up. 5a 6a 5b 6b 69 70 técnico - technical 7 En las es q u i n as se pueden realizar los cortes en inglete a fin de conseguir un mejor res u l tado es tético. 2 In these cases, it is essential to clean the drill hole thorough ly.
