stuck into the chunky yarn (it’s so

speedy knitters will whiz up one or

The pattern
Cast on 29 stitches.
Row 1: Knit one stitch, then purl
the next stitch. Continue like this,
alternating between knit and purl
stitches until you have knitted all the
stitches of the row (the last stitch will
be a knit stitch).
Repeat row 1 until your snood
measures 70cm (28”), approx 70
rows, then cast off. Leave a 50cm
(24”) tail when you cut the yarn – you
will use this when you sew your
snood together.
Fold your knitting in half so that the
short edges line up, with the cast off
edge below the cast on, and the
long yarn tail on the right hand side.
Sewing the edges together
You will now sew these edges
together, turning your knitted strip
into a loop.
Thread your darning needle with the
yarn tail from the cast off.
Insert the needle from right to left
under the first stitch of the cast on
(upper) edge.
Insert the needle from right to left
under the first stitch of the cast off
(lower edge).
Insert the needle under the next
stitch of the upper edge.
Insert the needle under the next
stitch of the lower edge.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 to continue
sewing together the edges, joining
in a new length of yarn when the cast
off tail runs out.
Sewing the contrast trim
To create the blanket stitch trim,
thread a darning needle with your
contrast yarn, and insert the needle
through the first edge stitch, from
back to front. Leave a 15cm (6”) tail
when you have finished your edge

HOW TO MAKE:
Cut out the pieces of felt
using the templates on the
opposite page. Embroider the
facial features onto the face.
Fold a length of orange
thread in half. Knot a piece of
thread around the strands,
halfway down, then sandwich
between the face and hair base.
Make a stitch (in flesh colour)
through the face to secure it.
Stitch half of the face to the
hair base, stopping right at the
bottom edge. Cut off the excess
hair. Sandwich one of the neck
pieces in between the face and
hair base. Continue stitching

around the rest of the face.
Snip through the top of the
loop, sew the hair across the top
of the face, then trim the fringe.
Braid two lengths of orange
thread. Sandwich between the
two orange hair bases and sew in
place, around the head. Leave a
gap for stuffing at one side and a
hole at the neck to insert a pipe
cleaner. Stuff and close the gap.
Take the other neck piece and
sandwich the top of the pipe
cleaner between the two neck
pieces. Push it into the hole at
the bottom of the face and sew
in place all around the neck.
Sew the two sets of arm

pieces together, leaving the ends
open. Bend the tip of a pipe
cleaner back on itself and stick
into one armhole. Snip the pipe
cleaner, leaving half an inch
sticking out of the arm. Repeat
for the second arm, then wrap
each pipe clearner around the
pipe cleaner body.
Take the four dress pieces and
stitch to make the front of the
dress. Sew on the pockets and
apple. Attach four pearls and
embroider four small lazy daisy
stitches to make a flower on the
front of each. Stitch a French
Knot in the centre to finish.
Using the four leg pieces,
make two legs. Push the pipe
cleaner into the legs, as you did
with the arms. Snip each pipe
cleaner, leaving a 5cm (2”)
length to wrap around the pipe
cleaner used for the body.
Sandwich the dress, head
with pipe cleaner body, and the
back of the dress together.
Stitch together, leaving a hole
for stuffing. Stuff and close.
Stitch together the top of the
shoes and the backs, with the
feet sandwiched in between.
Stitch two bows to the feet. Rub
pink chalk on her cheeks and

There’s something so satisfying
about giving your home a little
New Year re-fresh once the tree’s
come down and the baubles are
packed away. These gorgeous
cushions by Allison Sadler are
bursting with colour and pattern,
and are great for giving your sofa
a mini January makeover.
Circular cushions may be a little
trickier to master than their square
cousins, but this project is much
simpler to sew than it looks – plus
the end result is hugely satisfying.
There’s a bit of hand sewing
involved in order to get the
gathered effect in the middle,
so be sure to use good quality
thread – it’s less likely to snap
when you pull everything together.
Pick out your fabrics. These
cushions work well in florals and
spots, or throw clashing prints
such as chevrons and stripes
together for a bold twist.
Cut out a rectangular template,
from card, measuring 45.5 x 17.5cm
(18 x 7"). Lay the template onto
your chosen fabrics, pin in place
and cut out eight panel pieces.
Pin two of the panels rights sides
(RS) together and stitch along
the longer edge using a 1cm ( 5/8")
seam allowance. Continue stitching
the panels together, alternating
the fabrics as you go.
Stitch the first and last panel
together to create a cylinder.
Take your cylinder to the ironing
board and press the seams open.
Turn the cushion through to the
RS and, by hand, run a gathering
stitch all the way around one end
of the cylinder.
Gently pull on your gathering
stitch, bringing the fabric cylinder
together to form the centre of the
circular cushion cover.
Position your cushion pad
in place, then repeat Step 7 and
