Message from the general co-Chairs
It is our most sincere pleasure and honor to welcome you to the IEEE-ICIT 2010
International Conference on Industrial Technology, to be held in March 2010 in
Enjoy Casino and Convention Center, Viña del Mar, Chile. This conference is a great
opportunity to present your latest achievements on industrial technology, to get
acquainted with state of the art developments, to establish personal contact and
to interact with world's leading researchers in academia and industry. We are
honored to have your input at the conference and contribution to the discussion
on present trends, new challenges and future opportunities in key disciplines of
industrial technology. This is also a unique opportunity to experience Chile. Viña
del Mar and its neighbor city Valparaiso offer a very attractive location for such an
important conference as ICIT. They combine a unique mixture of industrial,
academic and touristic activities given by the copper and petrochemical industry,
the highest university concentration of the country and the World Heritage city of
sailors next to the vibrant beaches of Viña del Mar. We are sure that Chilean
culture, food, wines and people will be the extra touches that will make of this
conference a complete success.

Message from the technical co-Chairs
It is a great pleasure and honor for us to serve as the Technical Program Chairs for the
International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT2010). This conference has received
more than 510 papers. The peer review process is conducted in a very coordinated way
through the interaction of all the Track Chairs and us. Our sincere thanks and appreciation
are extended to all the Track Chairs and reviewers, for their great service.
This ICIT has eight regular tracks. These are Control Systems, Sensors, Instrumentation and
Signal Processing, Electrical Machines and Drives, Mechatronics and Robotics, Power
Electronics, Power Systems and Renewable Energy, System Integration, Industrial
Informatics and Communications, Hybrid/Electric Vehicle. Added to this is a set of
seventeen Special Technical Sessions. Thanks to all the Special Session Organizers for their
effort to organize the respective sessions.
Seven different tutorials on cutting edge technologies from Prof. Frede Blaabjerg, Aalborg
University, Denmark, Prof. Patrick Wang, Northeastern University, MA, USA, Prof. Juan
Dixon, Catholic University of Chile, Chile, Prof. Marian P. Kazmierkowski, Warsaw University
of Technology, Poland, Prof. Ralph Kennel, TU Munchen, Germany, Prof. Jose Rodriguez, Dr.
Patricio Cortés, Federico Santa Maria Technological University, Chile, Prof. Leopoldo G.
Franquelo, Dr. Jose Ignacio Leon, University of Seville, Spain, Dr. Samir Kouro, Ryerson
University, Canada, Dr. Marian S. Stachowicz, University of Minnesota Duluth, USA, and
Prof. Clarence De Silva, The University of British Columbia, Canada added an extra
dimension to the conference.
During the three days of the conference more than 300 papers will be presented in 8
technical tracks, 17 special sessions and 3 dialogue sessions. The scope of the ICIT being
very wide, here we have a rare opportunity to interact with a wide spectrum of technical
experts and we are sure you will find this conference very useful.
ICIT2009 also has seven plenary talks. We thank Prof. Mark Dehong Xu, Zhejiang University,
China, Prof. Graham C. Goodwin, The University of Newcastle, Australia, Prof. Frede
Blaabjerg, Aalborg University, Denmark, Prof. Juan Dixon, Catholic University of Chile, Chile,
Dr. Erich Lohrmann, KUKA Roboter GmbH, Dr. Jorge Pontt, NEIM, CASIM, Chile and Dr.

Michael Basler, ABB, Switzerland for their plenary lectures. All these lectures will show you
the state-of-the-art and challenge on a particular area of research.
ICIT2009 has created records on almost all fronts in the South American Continent. More
than 300 papers from 44 countries covering all continents proved this conference to be
truly international. It is worth mentioning that about 11.6% papers from Brazil, 11.3% from
Germany, 7.5% from Spain, 6.8% from Japan, 5.8% each from Chile and France, 5.5% from
USA, 4.4% each from Argentina and China and 3.8% from India and the remaining ones
from the rest of the countries will be presented in this conference.
Once again we thank all the authors who submitted papers to ICIT2010 and to all the
Technical Committee Members, the Special Session Chairs and Organizers for their great
effort. We are sure you will find ICIT2010 memorable!

About the cities
Viña del Mar
Viña del Mar (Spanish for: "Vineyard of the Sea"),
is a coastal city in Great Valparaíso area. Viña del
Mar is best known as a tourist and beach
destination with multiple beaches including
Reñaca, Las Salinas, Miramar, Casino, and others.
Visitors and locals enjoy the parks and water
fountains of the city, including a large flower clock
with its numbers made up of flowering plants,
near Caleta Abarca beach. The Valparaiso Sporting
Club horse racing track is another major
landmark. Jardín Botánico or Parque del Salitre, a rather large botanical garden on the
outskirts of the city, was originally designed and built by an entrepreneur who got rich from
exploiting saltpeter resources in northern Chile.
A few buildings from the 1800s are located along Avenida Libertad, Quillota Street and
Quinta Vergara, a rather large park in the middle of the city.
The city's casino was designed with art deco style and is surrounded by well-tended
gardens. In 2002 a hotel was added to the 1930s building, resembling the architectural
features of the original building.
Palacio Rioja, a mansion built by Fernando Rioja in 1907, located on Quillota Street, houses
an environmental museum. The Fonck Museum, located in Cuatro Norte Street, has a large
exhibition of pre-Columbian articles, and a large moai, the only one in mainland Chile, is
also on display. Palacio Carrasco, built by Emilio Carrasco in 1912, now houses the
Municipal Library and also is used for arts exhibitions. The building is also surrounded by
nice gardens adorned with fine sculptures including a Rodin. Palacio Vergara located in
Quinta Vergara was built by Blanca Vergara in 1906 and it is now owned by the municipality.
It currently houses the School of Fine Arts and has produced important Chilean artists like
the painter Giancarlo Bertini.
Palacio Brunet was built in 1923 by Adolfo Brunet on Cerro Castillo, close to the
presidential mansion. Currently it is owned by Carabineros de Chile and is used as a
reception center for important visitors. It was declared a national monument in 2005.
Numerous bars and restaurants have recently opened in the area around Plaza México and
Avenida San Martín, offering Chilean and international cuisine. Seafood restaurants are
located on the Coastal Roadway that joins Viña del Mar and Con-Cón, a coastal town to the
north.

About the cities
Valparaiso
Valparaíso is one of the country's most
important seaports and an increasingly vital
cultural center in the hemisphere's Pacific
Southwest. The city is the capital of the Region
of Valparaíso. Although Santiago is Chile's
official capital, Valparaiso houses the National
Congress.
Valparaíso played an important geopolitical
role in the second half of the 19th century,
when the city served as a major stopover for
ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific
oceans by crossing the Straits of Magellan.
Always a magnet for European immigrants, Valparaíso mushroomed during its golden age,
when the city was known by international sailors as “Little San Francisco” and “The Jewel of
the Pacific.”
Examples of Valparaíso’s former glory include Latin America’s oldest stock exchange, the
continent’s first volunteer fire department, Chile’s first public library, and the oldest Spanish
language newspaper in continuous publication in the world. The opening of the Panama
Canal and reduction in ship traffic dealt a staggering blow to Valparaíso, though the city has
staged an impressive renaissance in recent years.
Though San Antonio, Chile has taken the reins as the country’s most commercially
important seaport, the City of Valparaíso remains a vibrant center of Chilean culture, and
the Greater Valparaíso metropolitan area (which includes Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Quilpué
and Villa Alemana) has the third largest concentration of population in the country after
Greater Santiago and Greater Concepción.
Nicknamed “The Jewel of the Pacific”, Valparaíso was declared a world heritage site based
upon its improvised urban design and unique architecture. In 1996, the World Monuments
Fund declared Valparaíso’s unusual system of funicular elevators (highly-inclined cable cars)
one of the world’s 100 most endangered historical treasures. In 1998, grassroots activists
convinced the Chilean government and local authorities to apply for UNESCO world
heritage status for Valparaíso. Valparaíso was declared a World Heritage Site in 2003,
thanks to its historical importance, natural beauty (large number of hills surrounding a
picturesque harbour), and unique architecture (particularly, a mix of 19th century styles of
housing). Built upon dozens of steep hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Valparaíso
boasts a labyrinth of streets and cobblestone alleyways, embodying a rich architectural and
cultural legacy. Valparaíso is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Banks and currency
The official currency of Chile is the Chilean Peso ($).
Money can be changed at Airport as well as locally in Viña del Mar at several Money
Exchange bussines and banks. Banks are open from 09:00-14:00, Monday to Friday.
You can also get pesos from Cash dispensers but you can only get a maximum of $200.000
(380 USD approx.) per day. Cash dispensers (ATM) can be found in supermarkets,
drugstores and banks.
Most major international credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Magna, American Express and
Diners Club) are accepted in all shops and restaurants in Chile.

Climate
During March, Viña del Mar has a temperature range between 50°F (10°C) and 81°F (27°C).
The probability of rain is very low. However, it is normally to have mist during the morning.

Instructions for authors
Oral Sessions
Authors must meet the ICIT staff in order to test its presentation to the session
laptop/computer at least 10 minutes befores its session. Please, make sure your
presentation has all the fonts embedded. We recommend to save your presentation in
several software formats , (i.e. ppt, pps, odp or pdf) to assure portability.
Authors must meet the corresponding session chair to give them a short biography which
will be used to introduce each author.
Dialogue Sessions
Authors must have his/her poster available 30 minutes before the poster session.
Each poster session is synchronized with at least one coffe break to ensure large
attendance.
Authors must remove it poster at least 10 minutes after the end of the session.
ICIT 2010 Staff will provide author with accesories to mount each poster.
Instructions for session chairs
Session chair must meet the authors in his/her session 10 minutes before the session to
receive the biography of each author.
Each session chair will receive a session form with a list of its papers. In the session form
the chair must fill if the paper is 'no show'. This form must be returned to ICIT staff after
the session ends.

Abstract: Up to now the control of electrical power using power converters has been based
on the principle of mean value, using pulse width modulation with linear controllers in a
cascaded structure.
Recent research works have demonstrated that it is possible to use Predictive Control to
control electrical energy with the use of power converters, without using modulators and
linear controllers. This is a new approach that will have a strong impact on control in power
electronics in coming decades.
The main advantages of predictive control are:
• Concepts are very intuitive and easy to understand.
• It can be applied to a great variety of systems.
• The multivariable case can be easily considered.
• Dead times can be compensated.
• Easy inclusion of non-linearities in the model.
• Simple treatment of constraints.
• The resulting controller is easy to implement.
• This methodology is open to include modifications and extensions depending on
specific applications.
The participants of this tutorial will learn:

Prof. Marian P. Kazmierkowski, Warsaw University of Technology,
Poland
Marian P. Kazmierkowski received the M.Sc., Ph.D., and Dr.Sc. degrees
in electrical engineering from the Institute of Control and Industrial
Electronics (ICIE), Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland,
in 1968, 1972, and 1981, respectively. From 1967 to 1969, he was
with the Electrotechnical Institute, Warsaw-Miedzylesie, Poland.
From 1972 to 1980, he was an Assistant Professor with ICIE. Then,
from 1980 to 1983, he was with RWTH Aachen University, Aachen,
Germany, as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. From 1987 to 2008,
he was the Director of ICIE. From 1996 to 2000, he was a Coordinating
Professor of the International Danfoss Professor Program with Aalborg University, Aalborg,
Denmark. From 1996 to 2004, he was an Elected Member of the State Committee for
Scientific Research, Poland. He was also the Director of the European Centre of Excellence
on Power Electronics and Intelligent Control for Energy Conservation—PELINCEC 2003–
2006 at ICIE.

and textbooks. He coauthored Automatic Control of Converter-Fed Drives (Elsevier, 1994)
and coedited (with R. Krishnan and F. Blaabjerg) and coauthored the compendium Control
in Power Electronics (Academic, 2002).
Prof. Kazmierkowski was the Chairman of the 1996 IEEE International Symposium on
Industrial Electronics held in Warsaw. He has served as Vice President for Publication in the
IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (1999–2001). He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE
TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS (2004–2006), as well as a member of many
IEEE committees, particularly conference organizing committees. In 2007, he was a General
Cochair of the IEEE EUROCON 2007 conference held in Warsaw. He is currently the PastChairman of the IEEE Poland Section and an Associate Editor of Bulletin of the Polish
Academy of Sciences—Technical Sciences. He was the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate
degree from Aalborg University in 2004 and the Dr.-Ing. Eugene Mittelmann Achievement
Award by the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society in 2005. In 2007, he received the SIEMENS
Research Award in Poland. Since 2007, he has been an Elected Member of the Polish
Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Ralph Kennel, TU Munchen, Germany
Ralph M. Kennel was born in Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 1955.
He received the Diploma and Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.) degrees from the
University of Kaiserslautern, Kaiserslautern, in 1979 and 1984,
respectively.
From 1983 to 1999, he was with Robert BOSCH GmbH, Stuttgart,
Germany, where he was responsible for the development of
servo drives until 1997. He was one of the main supporters of
VECON and SERCOS interfaces, two multicompany development
projects for a microcontroller and a digital interface, particularly
dedicated to servo drives. Furthermore, he took an active part in
the definition and release of new standards with respect to CE marking for servo drives.
Between 1997 and 1999, he was responsible for the “Advanced and Product Development
of Fractional Horsepower Motors” in automotive applications. His main activity was
preparing the introduction of brushless drive concepts to the automotive market. From
1994 to 1999, he was a Visiting Professor with the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne,
England, U.K. From 1999 to 2008, he was a Professor for electrical machines and drives
with Wuppertal University, Wuppertal, Germany. Since 2008, he has been a Professor for
electrical drive systems and power electronics with the Department of Electrical Drives and
Power Electronics, Technical University of Munich, Munich, Germany. His main interests
today include sensorless control of ac drives, predictive control of power electronics, and
hardware-in-the-loop systems.
Dr. Kennel is a Fellow of the IEE and a Chartered Engineer in the U.K.Within IEEE, he is a
Treasurer of the Germany Section, as well as Vice President for Meetings of the Power
Electronics Society.

Jose Rodriguez Perez received the Engineer degree in electrical
engineering from the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria,
Valparaíso, Chile, in 1977 and the Dr.-Ing. degree in electrical
engineering from the University of Erlangen, Erlangen,
Germany, in 1985. Since 1977, he has been with the
Department of Electronics Engineering, University Técnica
Federico Santa María, where he was the Director of the
Department of Electronics Engineering from 2001 to 2004 and
is currently a Professor. From 2004 to 2005, he was the Vice
Rector for Academic Affairs, and since 2005, he has also been
the Rector of the same university. During his sabbatical leave in 1996, he was responsible
for the Mining Division, Siemens Corporation, Santiago, Chile. He has extensive consulting
experience in the mining industry, particularly in the application of large drives such as
cycloconverter-fed synchronous motors for SAG mills, high-power conveyors, and
controlled ac drives for shovels and power quality issues. He has directed more than 40
R&D projects in the field of industrial electronics. He has coauthored more than 250 journal
and conference proceeding papers and contributed one book chapter. His research group
was recognized as one of the two Centers of Excellence in Engineering in Chile from 2005 to
2008. His main research interests include multilevel inverters, new converter topologies,
and adjustable-speed drives.
Prof. Rodriguez has been an active Associate Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER
ELECTRONICS and the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS since 2002. He
has served as Guest Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS in six
instances [Special Sections on Matrix Converters (2002), Multilevel Inverters (2002),
Modern Rectifiers (2005), High Power Drives (2007), and Predictive Control in Power
Electronics and Drives (2008 and 2009)].
Dr. Patricio Cortés, Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria, Chile
Patricio Cortés received the Engineer and M.Sc. degrees in
electronics engineering and the Ph.D. degree from the
Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), Valparaíso,
Chile, in 2004 and 2008 respectively.
Since 2003, he has been with the Electronics Engineering
Department, UTFSM where he is currently a Research Associate.
In 2007, he was a Visiting Scholar with the Institute of Control
and Industrial Electronics, Warsaw University of Technology,
Warsaw, Poland.
His main research interests are power electronics, adjustablespeed drives, and predictive control. He received the IEEE
TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS Best Paper Award in 2007 from the IEEE
Industrial Electronics Society.

Tutorial on Power Electronics in Renewable Energy
Systems
Abstract: Renewable energy systems are presently undergoing a rapid change in technology
and use. Both the wind turbine and photovoltaic (PV) technology have an almost
exponential growth in installed capacity. Now renewable energy systems are a major
contributor to the grid power and they have to contribute to the overall grid control. Such a
feature is enabled clearly by power electronics. This presentation will discuss the
development in renewable energy systems (Mainly wind and PV), how power electronics is
enabling the technologies to become a real power source for the grid system and also
which demands can be expected in the future for such systems. Finally the expected trends
in power electronics technology for renewable energy systems will be discussed.
Prof. Frede Blaabjerg, Aalborg University, Denmark
Frede Blaabjerg, received the M.Sc.EE. degree from Aalborg
University, Aalborg East, Denmark, in 1987, and the Ph.D.
degree from the Institute of Energy Technology, in 1995.
He was employed at ABB-Scandia, Randers, from 1987–
1988. During 1988–1992, he was a Ph.D. student at Aalborg
University, where he became an Assistant Professor in 1992,
Associate Professor in 1996, Full Professor in power
electronics and drives in 1998, and became the Dean of
Faculty of Engineering and Science in 2006. He is the author
or coauthor of more than 300 publications in various
research fields including a book Control in Power Electronics
(Academic Press, 2002). His current research interests
include power electronics, static power converters, ac
drives, switched reluctance drives, modeling, characterization of power semiconductor
devices and simulation, wind turbines, and green power inverters.
Prof. Blaabjerg has held a number of Chairman positions in research policy and research
funding bodies in Denmark. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON
INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS, the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS,JOURNAL OF
POWER ELECTRONICS, and of the Danish journal Elteknik. In 2006, he became the Editorin-Chief of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS. He received the 1995
Angelos Award for his contribution in modulation technique and control of electric drives,
and an Annual Teacher Prize at Aalborg University, also in 1995. In 1998, he received the
Outstanding Young Power Electronics Engineer Award from the IEEE Power Electronics
Society. He has received five IEEE Prize Paper Awards during the last six years. He received
the C.Y. O’Connor fellowship 2002 from Perth, Australia, the Statoil Prize in 2003 for his
contributions in power electronics, and the Grundfos Prize in
2004 for his contributions in power electronics and drives.

Abstract: In contrast to hard computing, soft computing attempts to accommodate the
uncertainty, which is common in the real world. The goal of soft computing is to create
systems, which can handle imprecision, uncertainty, and partial information while
preserving robustness, tractability, and low solution cost. The ideal model for such a system
is the human brain.
Three of the principal components of soft computing are fuzzy systems, neural computing,
and genetic algorithms. Different combinations of these principals can be used in a
complementary fashion to produce powerful systems for modeling, diagnosis, and control.
All concepts covered are illustrated with examples of industrial control systems
applications.
Dr. Marian S. Stachowicz, University of Minnesota Duluth, USA
Dr. Marian S. Stachowicz is professor and Jack Rowe Chair
at the University of Minnesota and he is Visiting Professor
at the AGH-University of Science and Technology, Krakow,
Poland. He heads the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems
at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in
the University of Minnesota Duluth.
His work centers on artificial intelligence and soft
computing, decision analysis and control.
He is a member of the Berkeley Initiative in Soft
Computing, University of California, Berkeley. He is a Senior
Member of IEEE and a consultant for large multinational
corporations.
Prof. Stachowicz received two prestigious awards for
introduction digital fuzzy sets and he is co-author of the
Fuzzy Logic Package for Mathematica.

and Future Trends
Abstract: Multilevel converters have emerged as a very important alternative in the area of
high-power medium-voltage applications. Voltage operation above classic semiconductor
limits, lower common mode voltages, near sinusoidal outputs together with small dv/dt's,
are some of the characteristics that have made this power converters popular for industry
and research. In this tutorial, most recent multilevel converter research from the proposers
will be included, specifically in the areas of multilevel converters modeling, capacitor
voltages balancing methods and operation under faulty conditions.
This tutorial presents the most important topologies: the Neutral Point Clamped, Flying
Capacitor, and Cascaded H-bridge inverters. Emerging topologies like asymmetric hybrid
cells and other hybrid topologies are also addressed. Special attention is devoted to the
most relevant control and modulation methods developed for multilevel inverters:
multilevel sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (Phase Disposition or Level Shifted and Phase
Shifted), Space Vector Modulation, Hybrid modulation, multilevel Selective Harmonic
Elimination and multilevel Space Vector Control. Another objective is to introduce
modulation algorithms that drastically simplify the computation of switching times and
vector selection in complex multilevel systems; also practical problems as voltage
unbalance are solved using control algorithms. In addition a special part of the tutorial is
dedicated to rectifiers for multilevel inverters, covering both regenerative and nonregenerative topologies. Technical issues like fault detection and operation under faulty
conditions are also included. Finally, a review of important applications is presented to
highlight the practical impact of this converter family. Simulation and experimental results
will be presented.
Prof. Leopoldo G. Franquelo, University of Seville, Spain
Leopoldo G. Franquelo was born in Málaga, Spain. He received
the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the
University of Seville (US), Seville, Spain, in 1977 and 1980,
respectively.
He is currently with the Department of Electronic Engineering,
US. His current research interest includes modulation techniques
for multilevel inverters and their application to power-electronic
systems for renewable energy systems.
Dr. Franquelo was the Vice President of the IEEE Industrial
Electronics Society (IES) Spanish Chapter from 2002 to 2003 and
a Member-at-Large of the IES AdCom from 2002 to 2003. He was
the Vice President for Conferences of the IES from 2004 to 2007 and has been a
Distinguished Lecturer since 2006. He has also been an Associate Editor for the IEEE
TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS since 2007. Since January 2008, he has been
the President Elect of the IES.

B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in telecommunications engineering
from the University of Seville (US), Seville, Spain, in 1999, 2001,
and 2006, respectively.
In 2002, he worked on R&D projects with the Power Electronics
Group, US, where he is currently an Associate Professor with the
Department of Electronic Engineering. His research interests
include electronic power systems; modeling, modulation, and
control of power converters; and industrial drives.
Dr. Samir Kouro, Ryerson University, Canada
Samir Kouro was born in Valdivia , Chile , in 1978. He received the
M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electronics engineering from the
Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), Valparaíso ,
Chile , in 2004 and 2008 respectively. In 2004 he joined as Research
Assistant the Electronics Engineering Department of UTFSM, where
he is currently an Associate Researcher. In 2004 he was
distinguished as the youngest researcher of Chile in being granted
with a governmental funded research project (FONDECYT) as
Principal Researcher. His research interests include power
converters and adjustable speed drives.

Abstract: Mechatronics is a synergistic combination of precision mechanics, electronics,
controls, and computer engineering, combined through a process of integrated design. A
mechatronics engineer needs to be able to handle a wide range of technologies in sensors,
actuators, interface hardware, control systems, analog and digital electronics, software
engineering, and concurrent design. It is not possible to provide an in-depth coverage of all
these technologies in a single short course. The course will introduce key topics of the field
of Mechatronics, as useful for both students and practicing professionals. Various concepts
will be illustrated through worked examples and exercises. Case studies of Mechatronics
will be provided to illustrate the integrated design process, which is involved.
Prof. Clarence De Silva, The University of British Columbia, Canada
Clarence W. De Silva received the Ph.D. degree from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, and the
Ph.D. Degree from Cambridge University, Cambridge, U.K. He
has been a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and holder of
the NSERC-BC Packers Chair in Industrial Automation with the
University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada, since
1988. He has authored 16 books, 160 journal papers, and 180
conference papers, as well as the most recent books
Mechatronics—An Integrated Approach (Taylor-Francis/CRC,
2005), Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems Design—
Theory, Tools, and Applications (Addison-Wesley, 2004), and

He is a Lilly Fellow with Carnegie Mellon University, a NASA/ASEE Fellow, a Senior Fulbright

Canadian Academy of Engineering. He has served on editorial boards of 12 international
journals, including IEEE and ASME Transactions, and as Editor-in-Chief of the International
Journal, Control and Intelligent Systems, Editor-in-Chief of International Journalof
Knowledge-Based Intelligent Engineering Systems, Regional Editor, NorthAmerica, for the

Dr. de Silva is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has
received several awards, including the Killam Research Prize, the Education Award of the
ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Division, the Outstanding Engineering Educator Award
of IEEE Canada, the Outstanding Contribution Award of the IEEE Systems, Man and
Cybernetics Society, and the Meritorious Achievement Award of the Association of
Professional Engineers of British Columbia.

Developments and Technologies
Abstract: Better efficiency and less contamination are today two of the most important
tasks to decrease environmental problems. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) come first, but in
the near future pure electric vehicles (EV) or hydrogen-fueled vehicles (HFV) may be the
unique option.
This tutorial shows some of the most common technologies under development today,
related with HEV and EVs. For HVEs, the different topologies existing today and for EVs, the
different options related with their implementation: type of traction motors, type of power
inverters, energy storage systems and operational aspects. It also explores the future of
electric vehicles, according with new technologies under development today.
Prof. Juan Dixon, Pontificia Universidad Católica, Chile
Juan Dixon was born in Santiago, Chile. He received the degree
in electrical engineering from the Universidad de Chile,
Santiago, in 1977, and the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from
McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada, in 1986, and 1988,
respectively.
In 1976, he was working with the State Transportation
Company in charge of trolleybuses operation. In 1977 and
1978, he was with the Chilean Railways Company. Since 1979,
he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering,
Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, where he is
currently a Professor. He has presented more than 70 works at
international conferences and has published more than 30 papers related to power
electronics in IEEE TRANSACTIONS
and IEE Proceedings. His main areas of interest are in electric traction, power converters,
pulsewidth modulation rectifiers, active power filters, power factor compensators, and
multilevel and multistage converters.
He has performed consulting work related to trolleybuses, traction substations, machine
drives, hybrid electric vehicles, and electric railways. He has created an electric vehicle
laboratory, where he has built state-of-the-art vehicles using brushless dc machines with
ultracapacitors and high-specific-energy batteries.

Abstract: A new medium voltage drive has been developed based on the active neutralpoint clamped 5-level (ANPC-5L) topology. This presentation outlines the new medium
voltage drives in regards to the structure of the converter; the necessary conditions for
regulating the neutral-point and phase capacitor voltages; the synchronous frame current
regulator used for rectifier control allowing full four-quadrant operation on the network
side and the mechanical design philosophy along with the salient technical features. Finally
experience in pilot installations will be reviewed.

High-Power Drives for Energy Efficiency and abatement
of carbon emissions in Mineral Processing
Abstract- Mineral processing is one of the most energy intensive industrial operations with
important direct emissions given by the Diesel fuel used in mining equipment like haul
trucks for mineral transportation and indirect emissions generated by the use of electrical
energy in grinding mills, slurry pumps and high-current rectifiers. Therefore, there is a
challenge for improving the efficiency of energy use, the abatement of carbon emissions,
the use of water and environment care. Other challenges are given by the environment
around the mining operations, with altitudes above 3000 meters above sea level, mountain
conditions, as well as, the growing problems stated by lower ore-grades, deeper mine pits
and longer tunnels, requiring systems with higher transport and beneficiation capacity. For
economy of scale, high-power drives and modern technologies are needed. This work
reviews the trend of technology and potentials for carbon emission abatement and energy
efficiency in mineral processing.

Jorge Pontt received the Engineer and M.S. Degrees in electrical
engineering from the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María
(UTFSM),Valparaíso,Chile,in1977.
Since 1977, he has been a Professor with the Department of
Electrical Engineering and the Departamento de Electrónica,
UTFSM, within the R&D and graduate programs in power
electronics. He leads the Laboratory for Reliability and Power
Quality, UTFSM, and is currently the Director of Millennium
Nucleus on Industrial Electronics and Mechatronics, UTFSM. He
has had scientific stays at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt,
Darmstadt, Germany, from 1979 to 1980; theUniversity of Wuppertal, Wuppertal, Germany,
in 1990; and the University of Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany, from 2000 to 2001. He is a
Cofounder of ETT Ltd., Chile, which is a spin-off company related to instrumentation for
large grinding mills. He is the coauthor of the software Harmonix, which is used in
harmonic studies in electrical systems. He is also a Consultant in the mining industry and
energy processing, particularly in the design and application of high-power applications,
power electronics, drives, instrumentation systems,power quality, and electromagnetic
compatibility issues,with management of more than 80 consulting and R&D projects. He
has published more than 100 refereed journal and conference proceedings papers. He is
the coauthor of nine patent applications (four conceded).
Prof. Pontt was appointed by the IEEE as an Eminent Engineer in the year 2008 in Region9
(LatinAmerica).

The status of Power Electronics research and application
in China
Abstract: In the paper energy situation of China is reviewed. Leading institutions in China
on power electronics are introduced with respects to their highlighted research topics,
education circumstance and influence. Typical applications of power electronics
technologies in China are introduced. China power electronic market trend will also be
reviewed. In addition the government policy related to power electronics is explained. The
paper will introduce China Medium & Long Term Science and Technology Plan and the 11th
5-year R&D Plan, which are related to the future power electronics market needs in China.
He received BS. Degree, Ms. Degree and Ph.D degrees in 1983,
1986, 1989 respectively from Department of Electrical Engineering
of Zhejiang University, China. Since 1996 he became a full
professor in Department of Electrical Engineering of Zhejiang
University, China. Since 1999 he has been the executive Dean of
College of Electrical Engineering, Zhejiang University. From 2009,
he become vice dean of faculty of Engineering of Zhejiang
University. He was a visiting scholar in University of Tokyo, Japan
from June of 1995 to May of 1996. From June to Dec. of 2000, he
was a visiting professor in CPES of Virginia Tech in United State.
From Feb. 1 to March 31, 2006, he was a visiting professor in ETH in Switzerland.
He is interested in high frequency power electronics, renewable energy power electronics,
power quality controls. He authored 5 text books and more than 250 papers. He owns 8 patents.
He is co-editor in Chief of “Electrical Engineer Handbook” published by Chinese Electric Power
Press in 2008. In 2006 he got an award from the China Ministry of Education for his contribution
to the research on power electronics and application. His authored book titled on “Power
Electronics” is selected as the National Planning Text Book by China Ministry of Education, Aug.
of 2006. In 2007 it is evaluated as the national highest quality text book by China Ministry of
Education. He is at-large Adcom member of IEEE power electronics society from 2006-2008. He
is an associate editor of IEEE transaction on power electronics. From Jan. 2009, he is the chair of
technical committee of distributed generation and renewable energy systems of IEEE PELS.
Presently, he is a board member of Electrical Discipline of China State Department Education
Degree Committee. He is vice Chairman of China Power Electronics Society, and vice Chairman of
China Power Supply society. He is the editor in chief of series books on renewable energy and
power conversion published by China Publishing House of Electronics Industry from 2008. He
was vice chairperson of technical committee of IPEMC’2003(Xi’an China), vice chairperson of
technical committee of IPEMC’2006(Shanghai, China), vice chairperson of national steering
committee of IPEMC’2009(Xi’an China), steer committee member of IEEE PEDS’99 (HONG
KONG), IEEE PEDS’2003(Singapore), and IEEE PEDS’2005 (Malaysia), and a member of the
international advisor board of PCIM (Europe). He is one of the founders of Chinese Universities
Power Electronic and Drives conference, which now become an annual conference in China since
2007.

Robotics, jump to the next generation!
Abstract: Today, industrial robots are used mainly in serial production lines. The
programming of the robot over “Teach-In” takes time, is tedious and requires skilled
programmers. Available sensors help to adapt the programs to reality, but this in a very
primitive way. Robotic security is provided by fences, collision sensors and other security
items.
The next generation industrial robots will allow a fast programming – not hours and days –
only minutes. They can collaborate with others robots and together with humans. We will
find these robots in applications in small and medium size enterprises for small series
production, and finally insert in a fast changing environment.
The next generation the industrial robots will develop:
• Intrinsically security: Safety as a primary criterion, Safe Human-Robot interaction.
• Advanced program Algorithms and instruction: Instruct by demonstration,
Instruct by speech, Interaction with CAD data, Assistance with Vision, Tactile and
Laser sensors
• Cognitive Functionality: Task Level programming, Learn from experience, Adapt to
environment, Cooperate with Humans

Erich Lohrmann was born in Valparaiso, Chile in 1956. He visited
the German school in Valparaiso and grows bilingual. With 16
years he got a technical graduate in Radio and TV and started
his own businesswith a service center for Radio and TV
equipment. In 1980 he graduates in the University Federico
Santa Maria in Electronic Engineering.
After finishing his university graduation he left Chile to come to
Germany and started in 1980 at KUKA Schweissanlagen and
Roboter GmbH in the service department for Robotics. That
was his start in the great world of robotics which becomes his
passion.
He works on program optimizations, sensor applications and Know How transfer to other
KUKA organizations. With globalization he becomes 1998 Sales and Operations Manager for
Latin America starting business in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile. Which his good
understanding for local thinking and working, he takes over additionally the area of Asia
Pacific from 2001 to 2006. From 2006 he again concentrates in Latin America as Area
Director and starts new business in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.
In summary: 29 Years of a wide experience on robotic applications.

Power Electronics for Renewable Energy Systems
Abstract: The global electrical energy consumption is still rising and there is an urgent
demand to increase the power capacity. It is expected that the power capacity has to be
doubled within 20 years. The production, distribution and use of energy should be as
efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be set up.
Two major technologies will play important roles to solve the future problems. One is to
change the electrical power production sources from the conventional, fossil (and short
term) based energy sources to renewable energy resources. The other is to use high
efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and enduser application. The presentation discuss the most emerging renewable energy sources,
wind energy and photovoltaics, which by means of power electronics are changing from
being a minor energy source to be acting as an important power source in the energy
system in many areas of the world. Power electronics is the enabling technology and the
presentation will cover the development in wind turbine and photovoltaics technology
from kW to MW, discuss which power electronic solutions are most feasible and used
today.
Frede Blaabjerg, received the M.Sc.EE. degree from Aalborg
University, Aalborg East, Denmark, in 1987, and the Ph.D. degree
from the Institute of Energy Technology, in 1995. He was employed
at ABB-Scandia, Randers, from 1987–1988. During 1988–1992, he
was a Ph.D. student at Aalborg University, where he became an
Assistant Professor in 1992, Associate Professor in 1996, Full
Professor in power electronics and drives in 1998, and became the
Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Science in 2006. He is the
author or coauthor of more than 300 publications in various
research fields including a book Control in Power Electronics
(Academic Press, 2002). His current research interests include
power electronics, static power converters, ac drives, switched
reluctance drives, modeling, characterization of power semiconductor devices and simulation,
wind turbines, and green power inverters.
Prof. Blaabjerg has held a number of Chairman positions in research policy and research funding
bodies in Denmark. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRY
APPLICATIONS, the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS,JOURNAL OF POWER
ELECTRONICS, and of the Danish journal Elteknik. In 2006, he became the Editor-in-Chief of the
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS. He received the 1995 Angelos Award for his
contribution in modulation technique and control of electric drives, and an Annual Teacher Prize
at Aalborg University, also in 1995. In 1998, he received the Outstanding Young Power Electronics
Engineer Award from the IEEE Power Electronics Society. He has received five IEEE Prize Paper
Awards during the last six years. He received the C.Y. O’Connor fellowship 2002 from Perth,
Australia, the Statoil Prize in 2003 for his contributions in power electronics, and the Grundfos
Prize in 2004 for his contributions in power electronics and drives.

Energy storage for electric vehicles
Abstract: Electric vehicles have reached a mature technology today because they are
superior to internal combustion engines (ICE) in efficiency, endurance, durability,
acceleration capability and simplicity. Besides, they can recover some energy during
regenerative braking and they are also friendly with the environment. However, the energy
storage capability is one of their big drawbacks. Autonomous vehicles must carry all the
energy they need for a given distance and speed, which means an energy storage system
with high specific energy (kWh/kg). Besides, these systems need to be charged rapidly to
reduce the long charging time required today. This presentation shows some of the options
under study to increase the energy storage capability and to reduce the charging time. A
comparative study of different storage alternatives, such as chemical battery systems,
ultracapacitors, flywheels and fuel cells are compared, showing the advantages and
disadvantages of each one of them.
Juan Dixon was born in Santiago, Chile. He received the degree
in electrical engineering from the Universidad de Chile,
Santiago, in 1977, and the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from
McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada, in 1986, and 1988,
respectively.
In 1976, he was working with the State Transportation Company
in charge of trolleybuses operation. In 1977 and 1978, he was
with the Chilean Railways Company. Since 1979, he has been
with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Pontificia
Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, where he is currently a
Professor. He has presented more than 70 works at
internationalconferences and has published more than 30
papers related to power electronics in IEEE TRANSACTIONSand IEE Proceedings. His main
areas of interest are in electric traction, power converters, pulsewidthmodulation rectifiers,
active power filters, power factor compensators, and multilevel and multistageconverters.
He has performed consulting work related to trolleybuses, traction substations, machine
drives, hybridelectric vehicles, and electric railways. He has created an electric vehicle
laboratory, where he has builtstate-of-the-art vehicles using brushless dc machines with
ultracapacitors and high-specific-energybatteries.

modern high technology systems. Such systems include transportation (aircraft, high speed

mining, minerals processing and agriculture. A particular area where control is playing an
increasingly important role is industrial electronics. In this paper we will adopt a control
engineering perspective to reflect on the opportunities and challenges that exist in the
application of advanced control to these systems.

engineering), and the Ph.D. degree from the University of New
South Wales.
He is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at the
University of Newcastle, Australia, and holds Honorary
Doctorates from Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden, and the
Technion, Israel. He is the coauthor of eight books, four edited
volumes, and many technical papers.
Dr. Goodwin is the recipient of the Control Systems Society
1999 Hendrik Bode Lecture Prize, a Best Paper award from the
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON AUTOMATIC CONTROL, a Best Paper
award by the Asian Journal of Control, and two Best
Engineering Text Book awards from the International Federation of Automatic Control. He
is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Australia; a Fellow of the Australian
Academy of Science; a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology, Science and
Engineering; a Member of the International Statistical Institute; a Fellow of the Royal
Society, London, and a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
