 Dear Parents,
I hope that you all enjoyed the holidays and are looking forward to this half
CONTENTS
term. I am continually monitoring School effectiveness and gathering evidence
Halloween 2014
of our strengths and also identifying areas that can be developed and improved.
Alcazaba Trip
This month I have made slight changes to some of our daily routines at Swans to
Climbing La Concha
ensure we make the best use of time and ensure that the quality of teaching and Dove Cake Sale
learning is consistently high. One area we can improve upon is punctuality. It is U13-U15 Football
vital that all children arrive on time and that parents leave the playground on (…)
the first bell to allow our school day to begin promptly. Children arriving late
may be anxious, they disrupt the learning of others and delay planned activities
and assemblies. None of these are conducive to a productive learning environment.
The first bell rings at 8.55am and all children should be in their respective lines at this time. The main
gate will be closed at 9am. I would appreciate the support of every parent in this matter and hope to
see an improvement now the term has resumed. Thank you to all parents who are respectful of our
school procedures, your support is invaluable.
I hope you enjoy this edition of our Newsletter and I look forward to seeing many of you at our
parents evening over the next two weeks.

We are well into the Autumn term and have enjoyed a great start to the school year.
This month’s newsletters contains as always examples of the school enrichment program, this
highlights the students achievements, educational trips, activities and sporting
pursuits.
A few events I would like to draw your attention to are:

The Eagles Cake Sale raised a fabulous 222Euros which was donated to a
motor neuron disease charity in memory of our dearly missed colleague Mr
Adrian Bailey.

Fifty three students and staff recently climbed La Concha under the expert
supervision of Don Miguel Garcia. This annual adventure has grown over
the years from just a handful of students to a large enthusiastic group, many
of whom climb each year.

This month two groups of students have participated in trips to Alcazaba,
both history and art students attended in order to appreciate and learn
more about this wonderful place. I have no doubt that this experience will
be reflected in their work.

1 Halloween Disco and Halloween
Assembly
Every year, the children in Years 4 and 5
enjoy a spooky Halloween disco.
Accordingly, on the evening of the 23rd
October, a whole parade of zombies,
vampires, witches and ghosts descended
upon the Primary School to scare teachers
and students alike! The Primary School
would like to thank the Year 12 CAS students
for organising the ghoulish, ghostly fun.
The Halloween assembly is a great Swans tradition,
eagerly anticipated by all at Primary. This year was
another great one, with the children and staff joining
in with a spooky sing along and even a little bit of
dancing. Miss Karen told one of her thrilling, scary
stories, which are always entertaining for the staff as
well as the students!
What a fantastic way to end the half term! Halloween Party
There were witches, wizards, ghosts and
ghouls galore at the Year 6 and 7 annual
Swans Halloween Party. To get to the
party the students had to walk through
the Tunnel of Terror. After safely making
their way through the Tunnel, they
entered the Dungeon Disco, where they
enjoyed a fun-packed evening of dancing
and party games. To keep their energy
up, hot dogs and soft drinks were
available. A big thank you must go to
our CAS students, who organised and
ran the party.

2 Climbing “La Concha“ Mountain
On October 18th CAS students and some students
from other years made the challenging and
unforgettable ascent of La Concha. This time, 53
people (including students, teachers, parents and
friends) managed to reach the summit. What a
record! We fly the flag of Swans for yet another
year at the top of this iconic mountain.
Congratulations to all the participants!
Our next challenge will be to climb “La
Torrecilla”, the highest peak in the province of
Málaga. It will take place on the 7th of March 2015
and we look forward to seeing you all there!!

The children in Years 4, 5 and 6 have been
using this great program in class. We
recommend it for Key Stage 2 children to
enjoy at home.

systematically, and work collaboratively —
essential skills for life in the 21st century.
Eagles Cake Sale!
On Tuesday 8th October, Eagles arranged the first cake sale
of this school year; students from all age groups brought in
cakes, cupcakes, cookies, muffins and pies. The money
raised from the sale went to charity and in total we raised
222 euros! It was a great success and everyone joined in to
help as it was for a good cause and it was a very enjoyable
break time.
Thank you to everyone that took part!

3 The Dove Cake Sale
On the 10th October, the Doves held a cake sale to
raise money for a Kenyan organisation called
Sharing Christmas. We managed to raise over 500
Euros which is fantastic!!! Well done, and thank
you, to not only the Doves, but everyone who
bought their delicious cakes!
This followed our assembly on ‘caring’. We wanted
to show that we care by raising money for those
less fortunate than ourselves. Sharing Christmas
was set up by a group of mothers in Mombasa,
Kenya, to raise money to provide orphanages with
necessities such as mosquito nets, school uniforms,
shoes and food.
The organisers also provide these children with a
Christmas celebration and aim to encourage their
own children to think of others less fortunate than
themselves, especially over the Christmas period.
Each year, money is raised to donate to orphanages
and the schools that these children attend. The
children are also given gifts (toys and books
donated by children from a more privileged
background.) Many of these children had never
received a present before Sharing Christmas began
to visit them.

Sharing Christmas decided that the money raised
from our cake sale would go to a school in
Mombasa for orphaned children called Future
Hope Montessori School and I am delighted to be
able to share with you the response from the school
on hearing the amount raised:
Wow! That’s amazing thank you so, so much we
really appreciate it. You have NO idea what
unexpected donations do for one, they really lift
the spirits! As you can see from the children all
saying ‘bananas’ and why are they saying that,
because not only does it mean they all smile at the
same time’ but the €500 will pay the fruit bill for
the whole year….which is BRILLIANT!!

4 Art Department Alcazaba Field Trip
Prior to the re-conquest of Spain, the Moorish city
of “Málaqa” was the second city of an emirate, or
principality, after the capital Granada. The city
was prosperous, enjoying elegant architecture,
gardens and fountains. Malaga was surrounded by
fortifications and above was the citadel, or fortress;
the Alcazaba.
Málaga fell to the “reconquista” after the Siege of
Málaga in1487 and in 1492 the Catholic Monarchs
reclaimed Granada.
To give an idea of the antiquity and importance of the circumstances that produced this wonderfully
preserved monument, consider that in 1492, the same year that Columbus set sail for what was to
become known as the Americas, this area had been under Muslim rule for nearly 800 years; 800 years
beyond 1492 takes us to 2292, many years ahead from where we are now.
Students studying for examinations in art are required to meet examples of artworks first-hand. This
can include activities such as gallery and exhibition visits or going to fashion shows or to the cinema.
Our regular visits to the Alcazaba provide an opportunity for guiding students in recording
information about places and events they experience while gaining an understanding of the
significance of man-made forms.
We had the good fortune to enjoy particularly fine weather on our day out, with the students
engaging enthusiastically in making sketches and taking photographs of details and general views
around the buildings and gardens. For those who do not yet know the Alcazaba, a family visit is
wholeheartedly recommended.
Friday Assemblies – The Virtues Project
Swans Primary are running the Virtues Project during their Friday
assemblies this year. The aim of this project is to inspire the practice of
virtues in everyday life, focusing on kindness, justice and integrity. A
teacher takes an assembly on a two week rota. Virtues such as
Assertiveness, Caring, Cleanliness, Commitment and Compassion are
covered, each one taking two weeks. Once a virtue has been covered it is
hung on a “tree” for all to see. Children are encouraged to put the virtue
into practise and share it with everyone when they do.
Although they are perhaps amongst the oldest practises in the world,
virtues are ageless and we can see the benefit of sharing these with our
children. 5
5 Year 7— Humanities Department’s Yearly Trip to Alcazaba
On Thursday 2nd October, Year 7 went on
the Humanities department's annual trip to
the Alcazaba, in Malaga. It was a glorious
day, and all of the students marvelled at the
building skill of the Moorish architects in
creating such a strongly defended fortress.
The students loved climbing the turrets,
peering down wells and dungeons and
enjoying the peaceful gardens, with
beautiful fountains, that exist on different
levels of the castle.
We also took in the Roman Theatre, where our
guide told us about how it was discovered and
where the different classes of Roman citizen
would have sat to watch performances. It was a
very interesting tour, finding out about how the
city grew up as a settlement, and we then got to
soak up the atmosphere of central Malaga as we
had our lunch on the grass, nearby.
Our final visit was to the cathedral, and the
students were all amazed by the sheer scale of
the building (even if it does only have one arm!)
and the amazing decoration on the individual
chapels and altars. We then strolled to the bus
and made our way back to school, at the end of a
very successful day. The students were perfectly
behaved and took home some nice souvenirs and
personal memories of our local heritage.

Swans Secondary so that you can see the facilities
we have to offer and have lunch in our dining
room. If you would like to visit the Secondary
school, please pass by the office to make an
appointment with Miss Cris or Miss Susanne.

6 The Roll of Honour
To get on the Roll of Honour is a high achievement, since
the Roll of Honour is a ceremony in which, at Swans,
students receive an award for either having 6 A grades or
6 1’s for effort in their end of term reports.

Key Stage 3 Scholarship students 2014
-2015. The girls delivered a speech
during the Roll of Honour regarding
their scholarship and what they plan
to do to help students achieve better
standards. In addition to this they
handed out the Key Stage 4 Roll of
Honour certificates.
The Roll of Honour began in 2009, when you needed 3 A
grades to achieve the award. At the time, Swans had 265
students, 74 of which managed to achieve this prestigious
award. Since 2009, Swans has had to higher the grades to
6 A’s or 6 1’s because there were so many students on the
Roll of Honour.
This time, 62 students were honoured with this amazing
achievement. At Swans we have an assembly each term
dedicated to the Roll of Honour, in which certificates are
given out to the students who achieved the award. I think
this is a great way to help the students feel proud of
being on the Roll of Honour. Being on the Roll of Honour
is a major achievement, and is a great goal for students
striving to achieve.
Year 3 Rainforest Work
In Year 3 we have been learning all about
descriptive writing and describing the tropical
rainforests. We have been using similes, wow
words and different types of sentences to really
bring our description to life! Here's a fabulous
example from Kristina in Year 3L:The trees
were as tall as elephants: the branches were
like hands reaching the sky. The animals and
the creatures were silent, silent because they
were asleep. The toucans were noisy, arguing
like children.
The more the trees grew, the more the forest was dark. I see the light of the illuminating sun
shining everywhere. The crocodiles are like slippery, bumpy rocks. The thunder is like racing cars
chasing across the sky. I feel the skin of a fluffy, furry, soft tiger sleeping on the ground.

7 Voting for the Head Boy and Girl
When the children first arrive in Year 5, they are informed about the process for the elections of
Prefects, House Captains and Head Boy and Girl. During the first week, pupils are asked to consider
themselves for these positions.
The Head Boy and Girl nominees are voted for by the other children in Year 5. The voting is carried
out in secret and only four children can go through, two boys and two girls.
These four children are then asked to prepare a
speech which informs the other children why they
think they are worthy of this position. Then, after
the speeches, the voting takes place in secret. The
ballot papers are then counted and the winners are
announced in Assembly by Miss Karen.
This year it was very close and, after the count, the
winners were announced. They are Lola Martin
Cupido and Shaun Welch.
EIC Swimming Gala 2014
Since the opening of Swans´ indoor pool in 2010,
interest in competitive swimming has grown
enormously; our squad has expanded and
strengthened and we have been increasingly
successful in competitions.
On average, 30 to 40 enthusiastic swimmers
attended daily training in the last week of the
summer holidays, now squad nights (Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday) regularly have 16 to 20
students in the pool.
This year´s gala produced many first place
medals for us - look at the happy faces in the
photos.
Some of our squad train with local swimming
clubs also. As a result, we are improving our
standing in local swimming and international
school events.

Congratulations
to
Maddox McMillan in
Year 4 who has signed
to play football for
Malaga CF’s youth
side. During their first
league game of the
season, Maddox set
up the sixth goal and
scored the seventh in
an 8-2 victory!
Under 15 Boys Football - Lost
one, won one!
The Under 15 Boys kicked off their season at
Sotogrande International School, losing the
first game against Sotogrande M4 (Year 10) 10 but then bounced back with a 0-2 win
against Sotogrande M3 (Year 9).
Swans fielded a relatively inexperienced team
on the day, with Salim, Teo, Lev and
Fernando all making their Under 15 school
debuts, but strong performances from Dylan,
Aidan and Jesper carried them through.
Dylan and Abdullaziz both got their names
on the score sheet, however Jesper carried off
the Player of the Day award for a strong
defensive display and Salim deserves a
special mention for a solid debut performance
in goal and an outstanding save in the first game.
Students representing the school were: Salim Rabhi, Dylan Ramirez (captain), Aidan White, Jesper
De Jonge, Abdullaziz Al-Dughiethi (all Year 10), Teo León (Year 9), Fernando Sharma (Year 8) and
Lev Parizher (Year 7).

9 Under 13 Boys Football - Satisfactory start to the season at Sotogrande
Boys representing the school were: Javier Milagro,
Nicolas Sharma, Javier Parras, José Luque,
Guillermo Torres, Lev Parizher, Ivan Mayanskiy and
Fernando Sharma. A special mention should go to
Severino Bonvini, who was selected as the nontravelling reserve, but on this occasion did not get to
play.
The Under 13 Boys football team
played two matches at Sotogrande
International School, this month, losing
narrowly 2-3 against Sotogrande´s M2
(Year 8) team, but then following this
up by convincingly beating
Sotogrande´s M1 (Year 7) team 3-0.
Javier Parras underlined a good
performance by scoring one goal in
each game, whilst the other goals came
from Fernando Sharma, José Luque and
Lev Parizher.
Fernando Sharma
marked an excellent captain´s
performance with a Man of the Match
Award for an excellent display at
central defender in the first match and
Lev Parizher earned the other Man of
the Match Award for a superb
attacking performance in the second
match.
Under 13 Girls Football - Sotogrande too strong for Swans
The Under 13 Girls opened their
football season on the receiving end
of a lesson in football from a
stronger, more expe rie nced
Sotogrande A team.
The girls
battled bravely but at the end of the
day they were solidly beaten 4-0.
The team, however, responded
quickly by drawing 1-1 with the
Sotogrande B team, in a game
which they were unlucky not to

to Inés Illes for a fine defensive performance on her Swans debut. Students who represented the
school were: Casilda Dopico (Captain), Lilly-Mae Atkin, Inés Illes, Christine Dekker, Nathalie

10 Basketball reports for October news letter
Basketball has grown at Swans over the
past two years and, with the new
basketball kit and an increase in the
number of students at training, the
teams are unstoppable!
The season started with the Under 19s
playing Sotogrande. It was an early
fixture in the year before training had
started. The team was captained by
Pablo Sevilla (Year 13) who kept a calm
approach for the team, while Tomás
Williams played a fantastic defensive
game, communicating well with his
teams mates. Many baskets were scored
by Aidan White, Alim Adams, Jin-Yi
Lui, Sibo Hu and Lu Hu who all gelled
well as a team. The team played some
great basketball, but, unfortunately, lost
against the tall Sotogrande team,
however they are ready for a re-match
later this season. Player of the match
was Pablo Sevilla.
The second match of the season
was the Under 15 Boys team
captained by Aidan White (Year
10). The team dominated against
Sotogrande, playing short matches
against Sotogrande’s A, B and C
teams. Some fantastic defense by
Sacha Pierre and Sibo Hu meant
that Sotogrande struggled to put
many points on the score board.
Brandon Lee, Yago Suarez and Luis
Hoing made some great runs,
scoring numerous baskets
throughout the match. Aidan White
held the team together with his
fantastic knowledge of basketball
and Player of the match was Luis
Hoing for his enthusiasm on court,
and numerous lay ups scored.
Swans won by over 20 baskets.

11 The third match of the season was
the Under 15 girls against
Sotogrande. The team was
captained by Andrea Henderson
(Year 10). This team was a tough
opponent to play our first match
against, however the whole team
worked extremely hard on court
and demonstrated some excellent
passing and movement on and off
the ball. Alejandra Cortes-Funes
and Begoña Traverso held the
defence strong, whilst Patricia
Barra, Andrea Henderson, Chloe
Jeffrey and Sara Keppler worked
well to score numerous baskets in
offence. A great team effort. Player
of the match was Begoña Traerso
(Year 9) for her numerous
interceptions and fantastic work in
linking the team together. Final
score 38-33 to Sotogrande.
The Under 13 girls then won against Sotogrande, being
captained by Ines Illes Mejias (Year 8). The girls
dominated the court from the start with Casilda Dopico,
Carla Menendéz Cabello, Ines Mejias, Sophia Pieters,
Isabella Perovich Madeley and Maoli De Torquemada
Abellán linking well together. Player of the match was
Casilda Dopico for her enthusiasm, team work and skill
on court.

12 The fourth match was the Under 13 boys against Sotogrande. The team was captained by the
enthusiastic Tigran Davtyan (Yr 8) and was held strong with his team mate Nicolas Paessler.
Both boys made an immediate impact on court, scoring frequent layups and intercepting the
ball in defence. Sean Corrigan and Elie Aboutaka Keijzer played an excellent game against boys
2 years older than them. Piergiovanni Montaldo, Jaime Cortes-Funes and Denis Amanov also
had great games, linking in well with the team. Player of the match was Tigran Davtyan for his
excellent communication on court with his team and masterful basketball skills. Final score
Swans won 32-14.
The final match of this half term was a mini tournament against Aloha. Their A and B teams
played our teams. Once against Swans dominated play scoring numerous baskets and working
together well as a team. Their communication was excellent and morale high.
Thank you to Jin-Yi Lui and Alim Mussata, who assisted in refereeing. Player of the match was
Aidan White (A team) and Sean Corrigan (B team). All teams are now training for the
basketball tournaments, next term. Training takes place for the U13s (year 6-8) on a Tuesday
between 4-5pm and U15´s and U19´s (Year 9-13) on a Thursday from 4-5pm. Everyone is
welcome.

13 Estimados Padres,
Espero que hayan disfrutado de las vacaciones y estén preparados para este
trimestre. Continúo supervisando la efectividad y recopilando evidencias de CONTENIDOS
nuestra solidez a la vez que identificando áreas que puedan ser desarrolladas y Bienvenida
mejoradas. Este mes hemos introducido algunos cambios en nuestra rutina diaria de Ascensión La Concha
Swans para asegurar que aprovechamos el tiempo de la mejor forma posible y así Halloween 2014
garantizar que la calidad de la enseñanza y del aprendizaje sean de gran Excursión Alcazaba
consistencia. Un área en la que podemos mejorar es la puntualidad. Es vital que Fútbol S-15 y S-13
todos los alumnos lleguen puntuales y que los padres abandonen la zona del recreo (…)
cuando suene la primera campana para permitir que nuestro día escolar empiece sin
demora.
Los niños que llegan tarde pueden estar nerviosos, interrumpen el aprendizaje de los demás y retrasan
las actividades programadas y asambleas, evitando un ambiente de aprendizaje productivo. La primera
campana suena a las 8.55 de la mañana y todos los alumnos deben estar en sus respectivas filas a esta
hora. Se cerrará la puerta principal del colegio a las 9.00 de la mañana. Les agradecería el apoyo de cada
padre en este asunto y espero ver una mejoría tras la vuelta. Gracias a todos los padres que respetan las
normas del centro, su colaboración es muy valiosa. Espero que disfruten esta edición de nuestra circular
y estoy deseando verles en las tutorías que tendrán lugar durante las dos próximas semanas.

Hemos disfrutado de un gran inicio del curso escolar y ya estamos bien adentrados en este primer
trimestre. El boletín de noticias de este mes contiene, como siempre, información de nuestro programa de
enriquecimiento para los estudiantes, resaltando los logros de los alumnos, excursiones educativas,
actividades y eventos deportivos. Me gustaría hacer mención de algunos de los eventos realizados:
Con la venta de dulces de los “Eagles” se recaudaron 222 €, que han sido
donados a una organización benéfica que combate la enfermedad
motoneuronal, en memoria a nuestro querido colega Mr. Adrian Bailey, a
quien echamos de menos.

Recientemente, cincuenta y tres alumnos y profesores realizaron el ascenso a la
concha bajo la supervisión del experto Don Miguel García. Esta aventura que
realizamos cada año, es cada vez más popular, aumentando cada curso el
número de alumnos participantes, muchos de los cuales apuestan por revivir
esta magnífica experiencia.

Este mes, se han realizado dos excursiones a la Alcazaba de la capital
costasoleña con dos grupos de alumnos diferentes, una de historia y otra de
arte. En ellas, los alumnos han podido apreciar y aprender más sobre este
maravilloso lugar. Estoy convencida de que esta experiencia tan enriquecedora
contribuirá a potenciar sus conocimientos históricos y artísticos.
Concluyo esperando que disfruten de este boletín y espero verlos por el colegio
próximamente.


Ascensión a La Concha
El pasado 18 de octubre los estudiantes de CAS y algunos alumnos de otros cursos realizaron
la ya mítica ascensión a La Concha. En esta ocasión lograron la cumbre 53 personas, entre
alumnos, profesores, padres y amigos. ¡Todo un récord! Un año más logramos ondear la
bandera de Swans en la cima de esta emblemática montaña. ¡Enhorabuena a todos los
participantes! Nuestro siguiente reto será la ascensión al Torrecilla, pico más alto de la
provincia de Málaga. Tendrá lugar el 7 de marzo. ¡Os esperamos a todos!
¡Venta de pasteles de Eagles!
El martes 8 de octubre Eagles organizó la primera
venta de pasteles de este año. Los alumnos de
todos los cursos trajeron pasteles, magdalenas,
galletas, bollos y tartas. El dinero que se recaudó
de la venta se destinó para caridad, y en total se
lograron reunir 222 euros. La venta fue todo un
éxito, todo el mundo se involucró ya que era por
una buena causa, y el recreo fue muy divertido.

Tema: La Selva Ecuatorial
En Year 3 aprendemos todo
sobre escritura descriptiva y
descripción de las selvas
tropicales. ¡Utilizamos símiles,
palabras ‘wow’ y diferentes
tipos de oraciones para dar
vida a nuestra descripción!
Aquí hay un ejemplo fabuloso
de Kristina en Y3 L: “Los
árboles eran tan altos como los
elefantes: las ramas eran como
manos tocando el cielo. Los
animales y las criaturas estaban
calladas, silenciosos porque
estaban durmiendo.
Los tucanes eran ruidosos, discutiendo como niños. Cuanto más crecían los árboles, más
oscuro estaba el bosque. Veo la luz del sol iluminado brillando en todas partes. Los
cocodrilos son como rocas resbalosas, llenas de baches. El trueno es como coches de
carreras persiguiéndose por el cielo. Siento la piel de un tigre esponjoso, peludo, suave,
durmiendo en el suelo.”
Cuadro de Honor
En 2009 se instauró en el Colegio Swans, el
llamado Cuadro de Honor, para distinguir a los
estudiantes que mostraban mejores resultados y
mayor esfuerzo. Inicialmente bastaba con 3 As
para estar en el Cuadro de Honor, y 74 alumnos
de 256 lo consiguieron.
Actualmente se ha hecho más difícil pertenecer
al Cuadro de Honor. Ha aumentado la
exigencia y hacen falta demostrar excelentes
resultados o un gran esfuerzo, con al menos 6
As o 6 1s. De tal forma que aunque sean más los
alumnos solo 62 forman parte de este grupo.
La Ceremonia trimestral de entrega de certificados con los familiares, hace sentirse
orgullosos a los alumnos que consiguen estar en el Cuadro de Honor, y les motiva en su
esfuerzo de mantener los resultados. Este logro es una de las maneras por las que se
consigue mejorar el rendimiento de los alumnos del colegio, aumentando la probabilidad
de tener éxito en el futuro.

La Venta de Pasteles “Dove Cake Sale”
El 10 de octubre se organizó una venta de
pasteles para recaudar dinero para una
organización keniana denominada Compartiendo
la Navidad. Conseguimos recaudar más de 500
euros. ¡Que es fantástico!!! ¡Bien hecho y gracias
no sólo a las Palomas, sino a todos los que
compraron sus deliciosos pasteles!
A esto siguió la Asamblea sobre ‘Colaborar’.
Queríamos demostrar que nos preocupamos por
recaudar fondos para aquellos que son menos
afortunados que nosotros. Compartiendo la
Navidad fue establecido por un grupo de madres
en Mombasa, Kenia para recaudar fondos para
ayudar a orfanatos con necesidades tales como
mosquiteras, uniformes escolares, zapatos y
comida.
Los organizadores también preparan una
celebración de Navidad y animan a sus
propios hijos a pensar en otros menos
afortunados
que
ellos
mismos
especialmente durante el período de
Navidad.
Cada año recaudan dinero para donar a los
orfanatos y los colegios a donde van estos
niños. Los niños también reciben regalos
(juguetes y libros donados por niños más
privilegiados). Muchos de estos niños
nunca habían recibido un regalo antes de
que Compartiendo la Navidad comenzara
a visitarlos.
Compartiendo la Navidad decidió que el dinero recaudado de la venta de pasteles iría a un colegio
en Mombasa para niños huérfanos llamado Futura Esperanza Montessori School y estoy encantada
de poder compartir con ustedes la respuesta del colegio al escuchar el importe recaudado:
¡ Guau! Es increíble, muchas gracias, realmente lo apreciamos. No os hacéis ni idea de qué significan
las donaciones inesperadas para nosotros. ¡Realmente levantan los espíritus! Como se puede ver en
todos los niños diciendo 'plátanos' y por qué dicen eso, porque no sólo significa que todos sonríen al
mismo tiempo sino que los 500 € pagarán la factura de la fruta durante todo el año... ¡Que
maravilla!!!!

Viaje a la Alcazaba 2014 del Departamento de Arte
Antes del período de la Reconquista de la
península por parte de los cristianos, la
ciudad árabe de Málaga fue la segunda
ciudad del emirato después de Granada. Era
una ciudad próspera, con una arquitectura
elegante, jardines y fuentes. Málaga estaba
rodeada de fortificaciones y en la parte alta de
la ciudad se encontraba la ciudadela, o
fortaleza, la Alcazaba.
Tras un largo asedio, Málaga cayó en poder de
los cristianos el año 1487, y en el año 1492, los
Reyes Católicos conquistaron Granada.
Disco de Halloween
Todos los años los niños de Year 4 y 5
disfrutan de una discoteca de Halloween
espeluznante. Como consecuencia, la noche
del 23 de octubre, un desfile de zombis,
vampiros, brujas y fantasmas descendieron a
Primaria para asustar a los maestros y
estudiantes.
El colegio de Primaria da las gracias a los
alumnos de CAS en Year 12 por organizar esta
macabra y fantasmal diversión.
Para tener una idea de la antigüedad y la
importancia de las circunstancias que rodean a
este
maravillosamente
conservado
monumento, en 1492, el mismo año que Colón
partió hacia el Nuevo mundo, este área ya
había estado bajo dominación árabe durante
casi de 800 años, por lo que si hacemos la
suma, hasta el año 2292 no llevaremos en la
península tanto tiempo como el que llevaron
los árabes.
A los alumnos que se van a examinar de la
asignatura de arte, les pedimos que conozcan
de primera mano obras de arte, por lo que les
animamos a que visiten galerías de arte y
exposiciones o que asistan a desfiles de moda
o a vayan al cine. Nuestras visitas a la
Alcazaba nos dan la oportunidad de guiar a
los alumnos para que recopilen información
de los lugares que visitan, a la vez que a que
comprendan la importancia de las obras
hechas por el hombre.
Tuvimos la suerte de disfrutar de un tiempo
maravilloso con los alumnos, que se afanaron
con entusiasmo en hacer bocetos, y tomar
fotos de rincones del monumento, vistas y
jardines. Para aquellos que todavía no han
visitado la Alcazaba, les recomiendo de todo
corazón una visita familiar.

Votación para Headboy y Headgirl
Cuando los niños lleguan a Year 5 se les informa sobre el
proceso de las elecciones de prefectos, de los capitanes de
casa y Headboy and Headgirl. Durante la primera semana
se pide a los alumnos que se consideren para estos
puestos. Los nominados de Head Boy and Head Girl son
votados por los otros niños en Year 5. La votación se lleva
a cabo en secreto y sólo cuatro niños pueden seguir, dos
niños y dos niñas. Después se pide a estos cuatro niños
que prepararen un discurso que informe a los otros niños
de por qué creen que son dignos para esta posición.
Después de los discursos la votación se lleva a cabo en secreto. Luego se cuentan las papeletas y
Miss Karen anuncia a los ganadores en la asamblea. Este año estuvo muy reñido y después del
recuento se anunciaron los ganadores. Son Lola Martín Cupido y Shaun Welch.
Estoy seguro de que a todo el personal y los niños les gustaría desearles todo lo mejor en el
próximo año, en sus roles de Head Boy y Head Girl.
Asamblea de Halloween
La Asamblea de Halloween es una gran tradición de
Swans, esperada por todos en Primaria. Este año fue
otra gran asamblea con los niños y personal
participando en una espeluznante canción e incluso un
poco de baile. Miss Karen contó uno de sus
emocionantes relatos de miedo que siempre
entretienen tanto al personal como a los estudiantes.

Los niños de Year 4, 5 y 6
utilizaron este gran programa en
clase. Lo recomendamos para que
los alumnos de Key Stage 2 lo
disfruten en casa.
Con Scratch, pueden programar
sus propios cuentos interactivos,
juegos y animaciones y compartir
sus creaciones con otros en la
comunidad en línea. Scratch ayuda
a los jóvenes a aprender a pensar
creativamente,
razonar
sistemáticamente y trabajar de
manera colaborativa — habilidades
esenciales para la vida en el siglo
XXI.

Fiesta de Halloween
En la fiesta anual de Halloween de
Swans para los alumnos de año 6 y año
7, se dieron cita multitud de brujas, magos, fantasmas y demonios. Para llegar
al lugar de la fiesta los estudiantes tuvieron que pasar a través del Túnel del
Terror. Una vez superado el túnel de
manera segura, pasaron a la discoteca
de la Mazmorra, donde disfrutaron de
una noche de diversión bailando y participando en juegos. Para que no les faltara energía se sirvieron refrescos y perritos calientes. Debemos expresar nuestro agradecimiento a nuestros estudiantes de CAS (Creatividad, Accíon, Servicio) de bachillerato
que organizaron la fiesta de forma extraordinaria.
Asambleas de los viernes - El Árbol de las Virtudes
Swans Primaria trabaja en el Proyecto de la Virtud durante sus
asambleas de los viernes este año. El objetivo de este proyecto
es inspirar a la práctica de las virtudes en la vida cotidiana,
centrándose en la bondad, la justicia y la integridad. Un profesor hace una asamblea turnos de dos semanas.
Hablan sobre virtudes como la asertividad, cuidado, limpieza,
compromiso y compasión, cada uno durante dos semanas.
Una vez que se ha terminado una virtud se cuelga en un ‘árbol’
para que todos puedan verlas. Animamos los niños a poner la
virtud en práctica y compartirlo con todo el mundo cuando lo
hacen.
Aunque tal vez estén entre las prácticas los más antiguas en el
mundo, las virtudes son atemporales y podemos ver el beneficio de compartirlos con nuestros hijos.

Año 7—Visita a la Alcazaba
Visita a Sierra Blanca
Queremos invitar a los padres de
Primaria a que visiten Swans Sierra
Blanca y puedan ver nuestras
instalaciones y almorzar con
nosotros en el comedor. Si desean
venir, por favor, pasen por la oficina
para concertar una cita con Miss
Susanne o Miss Cris.
El jueves, 2 de octubre, el curso de Year 7 realizó la
visita anual a la Alcazaba de Málaga. Fue un día
glorioso, y todos los alumnos se maravillaron ante las
habilidades de construcción de los arquitectos
Moriscos al crear una fortaleza con tan buenas
defensas. Los estudiantes disfrutaron subiendo a las
torretas, visitando las fuentes y mazmorras y
disfrutando de sus bonitos y tranquilos jardines, con
sus hermosas fuentes, que existen en muchos de los
rincones del castillo.
También visitamos el teatro romano, acompañados por
un guía, que nos explicó cómo se descubrió y cómo se
disponía la audiencia romana según su clase social,
para asistir a los eventos. Fue una visita muy
interesante, descubriendo la evolución de la ciudad
como asentamiento. Más tarde nos zambullimos en el
ambiente del centro, almorzando en unos jardines
cercanos.
La parte final de nuestra visita la dedicamos a la
Catedral, con sus increíbles dimensiones, a pesar de
tener tan sólo un brazo, y la sorprendente decoración
de las diferentes capillas y altares. Tras este último
itinerario nos pusimos en marcha para volver al
colegio. El comportamiento de los alumnos fue
perfecto, y trajeron de vuelta regalos y recuerdos de
este día.

Fútbol cadetes: perdimos un
partido, ¡pero ganamos otro!

Maddox McMillan
de Y4 ha firmado
para jugar al fútbol
para Malaga CF
Juvenil. ¡Durante
su primer partido
de la temporada de
la Liga, Maddox
metió el sexto y el
séptimo gol en una
victoria de 8-2!
Los chicos del equipo de cadetes empezaron la
temporada en el colegio de Sotogrande,
perdiendo el primer partido contra el equipo de
Year 10 de Sotogrande 1 – 0. Sin embargo,
vencieron en el segundo partido contra el equipo
local de Year 9, venciendo 0 – 2. Hubo
incorporaciones nuevas en nuestro equipo, como
Salim, Teo, Lev y Fernando, que debutaron en
esta categoría. Los más veteranos, como Dylan,
Aidan y Jesper, los ayudaron a superar los
nervios del primer partido.
Dylan y Abdullaziz fueron los goleadores, pero
fue Jesper quien se llevó el premio al mejor
jugador del partido por su gran trabajo en
defensa. Asimismo, Salim merece una mención
especial por su gran actuación en general en la
portería y por una espectacular parada en el
primer partido.
Los alumnos que representaron a Swans en esta ocasión fueron: Salim Rabhi, Dylan Ramírez
(capitán), Aidan Wite, Jesper de Jonge y Abdullaziz Al-Dugheithir, en Year 10; Teo León, en Year 9;
Fernando Sharma, en Year 8, y Lev Parizher, en Year 7.

Fútbol sub13 masculino. Buen comienzo en Sotogrande
El equipo sub13 ha jugado este mes dos partidos en Sotogrande International School, perdió el
partido contra M2 Sotogrande (year8) en un ajustado 3-2; pero ganó contundentemente por 0-3
al conjunto M1 (Año 7).
Javier Parras destacó con
un gol en cada partido, y
Fernando Sharma junto a
José Luque y Lev Parizher
completaron los goles.
Fernando, capitán del
equipo, fue merecedor del
premio Jugador del
Partido
como defensa
central en el primer
encuentro; mientras que
Lev logró el mismo
premio en el segundo
partido como mejor
atacante.
Los jugadores que representaban al colegio son: Javier Milagro,
Nicolas Sharma, Javier Parras, José Luque, Guillermo Torres, Lev
Parizher, Ivan Mayanskiy and Fernando Sharma. Especial mención
merece Severino Bonvini como suplente, aunque no llegó a jugar
en esta ocasión.
Fútbol Femenino sub 13. Sotogrande, demasiado fuerte para Swans.
El equipo de fútbol femenino sub 13 de Swans, comenzó su temporada futbolística recibiendo
un correctivo de la mano de su rival, el Sotogrande, equipo más fuerte y experimentado. Las
chicas se batieron con bravura, pero al final del día acabaron cayendo derrotadas
contundentemente por 4 -0. El equipo, sin embargo, comenzó respondiendo rápidamente al
primer tanto adverso con un empate a uno, demostrando que nuestro equipo fue desafortunado
al no poder obtener la victoria, a pesar del buen juego desplegado.
Los
jugadores
más
destacados fueron Casilda
Dopico e Inés Illes, tanto por
su eficacia y velocidad en
ataque, refrendado con un
gol, como por su seguridad
en defensa y debút con
swams,
respectivamente.

Informe de Baloncesto para la Carta de Octubre
El baloncesto ha crecido mucho
en Swans durante los dos
últimos años con las nuevas
pistas y el gran número de
participantes,los equipos son
imparables.
Comenzó la temporada con
U19s en Sotogrande. Fue una
prueba antes de comenzar los
entrenamientos del año. El
equipo estaba capitaneado por
Pablo Sevilla, de Year 13, que
estuvo calmando al equipo.
Tomás Willimans jugó un
fantastico partido defensivo
coumnicándose bien con sus
compañeros.
Muchas canastas fueron anotadas por Aidan White, Alim Mussata, Jin-Yi Lui, Sibo Hu y Lu,
todos jugaron muy conjuntados como equipo. Aunque realizaron un gran partido
desafortunadamente perdieron, pero ya están preparados para la revancha que viene
pronto. Pablo Sevilla fue elegido jugador del partido.
El Segundo partido de la
temporada fue U15 masculino
cuyo capitán es Aidan White,
year 10. Jugó partidos cortos
contra Sotogrande A,B y C y
mostró una gran defense con
Sacha
Pierre y Sibo Hy evitando
muchas canastas de Sotogrande.
Brandon Lee, Yago Suarez y Luis
Hoing jugaron muy bien
anotando muchos puntos. Y
Aidan White mostró su gran
conocimiento del baloncesto
conjuntando al equipo- Luis
Hoing fue el jugador del partido
con grandes pases y asistencias.
Swans ganó de 20.

El tercer partido de la temprada
fue el U15 femenino contra
Sotogrande.
Andrea
Henderson ,year 10,fue nuestra
capitana. Este equipo jugó muy
bien y mostró sus habilidades
para moverse en la pista con y sin
pelota Alejandra Cortes-Funnes y
Begoña Traerso defendieron
valientemente y Patricia Barra
Morro, Andrea Henderson, Chloe
Jeffrey and Sara Keppler
anotaronmuchas canastas como
atacantes. Un gran trabajo de
equipo. Begona trareso fue la
jugadora del partido con sus
multiples tapones y conjunicón
del equipo. El resultado final fue
38 a 33 para Sotogrande.
Las chicas de U13
también ganaron contra
Sotogrande, siendo su
capitana Inés Illes Mejías
(de año 8). Las chicas
dominaron la cancha
desde el principio con
Casilda Dopico, Carla
Menéndez Cabello, Inés
Mejías, Sophia Pieters,
Isabella
Perovich
Madeley ,y Lucía de
T o r q u e m a d a ,
entendiéndose bastante
bien en las jugadas.
La jugadora del partido
fue Casilda Dopico por
su entusiasmo, trabajo en
equipo
y
técnica
demostrada en la cancha.

El cuarto partido fue contra los chicos de U13 de Sotogrande. El equipo tenía por capitán
al entusiasta Tigran Davtyan (de Año 8) resisiteron con fuerza junto con su compañero
de equipo Nicolas Paesler. Ambos chicos se hicieron notar inmediatamente en la cancha
haciendo varios mates e interceptando balones (tapones).
Sean Corrigan y Elie Aboutaka Keijzer jugaron un excelente partido contra otros chicos 2
años mayores que ellos. Pieriovanni Montaldo, Jaime Cortes-Funnes y Denis Amonov
también jugaron bastante bien, entendiéndose a la perfección con el resto de los chicos
del equipo.
El jugador del partido fue Tigran Davtyan por su excelente comunicación en la cancha
con su equipo y por su dominio de las técnicas del baloncesto. El marcador final fue una
victoria de Swans por 32 a 14.
El partido final de esta mitad de trimestre fueun mini torneo contra Aloha. Sus equipos A
y B se enfrentaron con nuestros equipos. Una vez más Swans dominó el partido anotando
numerosos tantos y trabajando bien juntos en equipo. Su comunicación en la cancha fue
excelente y estaban muy motivados . Los resultados finales: Swans A 14 - Aloha A 12,
Swans B 14 - Aloha B 10, Swans B 5 - Aloha A 17, Swans A 36 - Aloha B 3, Swans Un 19 Aloha A 7, Swans B 26 - Aloha B 8 .
Los resultados del torneo final; 1er lugar Swans A, segundo Swans B, tercer Aloha A,
cuarto Aloha B. Gracias a Jin-Yi Lui y Alim Mussata que ayudaron con el arbitraje. El
jugador del partido fue Aidan White (del equipo A) y Sean Corrigan (del equipo B).
Todos los equipos están ahora entrenando para los próximos torneos de baloncesto del
próximo trimestre. Los entrenamientos son para los U13s (de año 6 a 8) los martes de 4 a 5
de la tarde. Para los U15's y U19's (de año 9 a 13) de 4 a 5 de la tarde los jueves. Todos son
bienvenidos.

Gala de natación en EIC- Septiembre de 2014
Desde la inauguración de la piscina cubierta
de Swans en 2010, el interés por la natación
competitiva ha crecido enormemente,
Nuestro equipo tiene más miembros, es más
fuerte y hemos ido mejorando cada vez más
en las competiciones. Como media, de 30 a 40
nadadores asistieron diariamente a los
entrenamientos durante la última semana de
las vacaciones de verano. Ahora, los equipos
son de 16 a 20 nadadores y entrenan los
martes, miércoles y jueves.
Algunos de nuestros quipos entrenan
también con equipos de natación
locales. Como resultado, hemos
mejorado nuestro prestigio en las
competiciones locales y entre colegios
internacionales. En la gala de este año
hemos ganado muchas medallas por
conseguir el primer puesto – vea las
caras felices en la foto. 14
