In today’s Gospel reading, John the Baptist warns his
listeners: “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at
hand!” The Church’s yearly Advent herald is a call to
repentance. The season of Advent urges us to be open to a
conversion of heart. Christian stewards heed this call
daily, and take the need for conversion in their lives
seriously.
As a family of faith, do we hear this call to conversion
amidst the massive holiday spending? The increase in
credit card debt? The urge to buy things that are not
necessary? The incivility on the roadways during the
holidays? Are there patterns in our own lives that need to
be converted?

Accessible Augustine: Beauty Ancient And New—December 14
A public lecture by Dr. Sam Rocha.
All are invited to a lecture by Dr. Sam Rocha entitled, Accessible Augustine:
Beauty Ancient and New, on December 14 at 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall. This event
is free and open to the general public. The purpose of this talk is two-fold:
 To introduce St. Augustine’s Confessions in a serious and sympathetic way,
as a worthwhile text for any layperson to read, and encourage attendees to
purchase and study it.
 To highlight how St. Augustine teaches the Church about the utility of philosophy in the Christian life, especially within a secular world, calling for a contemporary renewal of the mind (Rm. 12:2) and the intellectual tradition of the
Catholic Church.
Several themes in the Confessions will be touched on and applied to present-day
issues including: Confession as profession, The problem of evil , The human will
and sin, Conversion and the universal call to holiness, St. Monica, the head and
the heart, Objections to, and engagement with, atheism , Why astrological superstition is nonsense, The primacy and priority of love.
This talk and its approach are rooted in Dr. Rocha’s notion of “pastoral philosophy,” a notion of philosophy rooted in the language of story and the vocation of
ministry. Dr. Rocha’s style lively and accessible, but demands more than an intellectual investment — the ultimate aim is to bring souls to Christ.
A free-will offering will be taken up and Dr. Rocha will be selling and signing his
two books: Things and Stuff, a book of essays, and A Primer for Philosophy and
Education, his most recent book on philosophy and education. For more information, visit www.saintwilliams.org or pick up a flyer in the Welcome Center.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Saint Vincent’s Corner
In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist urges us to “Prepare the way of the Lord.” This is what Advent is all about, for
we are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own
hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need.
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that
together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate Christmas. 512-255-2330
Words of Life
Mary Immaculate helps us rediscover and defend what is inside people, because in her there is perfect
transparency of soul and body. She is purity in person in the sense that the spirit, soul and body are fully
coherent in her and with God’s will. Our Lady teaches us to open up to God’s action and to look at others as he
does, starting with the heart, to look upon them with mercy, love, infinite tenderness, especially those who are
lonely, scorned or exploited. ~ Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
