No, lamentablemente, no (ríe). No puedo elegir. Besides commenting on his main achievements, in this note he introduces us in his last great adventure: The Archivo Digital del Tango (Tango Digital Archive). Ignacio Varchausky’s office is not just another office in The Tango house. It’s an unusually broad and bright space with the classic desk with chairs, a sofa with a pair of matching armchairs, a double-bass, several shelves with discs, books and music stereos, and even a flipper game! ("It gives hapiness", he justifies). That is not the only extravagant fact: among the most diverse tango LPs there are several collection cars. An additional surprise: the most striking pictures on the wall are not images of tango, but of jazz. The interviewee attracted public recognition in the mid | FREE DOWNLOAD • www.eltangauta.com 90’s as double-bass player and "alma mater" of Orquesta El Arranque, one of the greatest groups in this latest stage of tango. In 1999 he managed to solidify his idea of the Orchestra School, designed to create a link between the great masters of tango and the youngest generation of musicians. Earlier on in this decade, Varchausky created the civil association TangoVía, through which he produced two collections of original records (The Art of the Typical Orchestra and The Art of the Bandoneon), several tango festivals in foreign countries (mostly in Europe) and a book with the mythical arrangements of the orquesta típica of Horacio Salgán. These days he is venturing in the cyclopean task of digitalizing all recorded tango in analogical discs. (See box). Although with new members, in the last years Ignacio has never abandoned his activity in El Arranque. Without going any further, this month the group is engaging in a set of presentations, which will last 3 months, in No Avestruz. Part of the show’s repertoire is expected to be conformed by their own tangos, recorded in Nuevos, a CD which includes, in it’s deluxe version, a board game based on a series of acid questionings to the tango imaginary, like at what age one ceases to be young in tango? Can a foreigner play good tango? Or, are there gay tango musicians? This album, the group’s sixth, was the kickoff subject of our conversation. regarding technique. How do you explain this change of direction? I don’t consider it to have been a change of direction. I see it more as a different development stage. Each one brings a repertoire to add to the permanent repertoire and to be rehearsed for a whole month. At the end of each month the orchestra performs everything they have learned in public at the National Library. What is your appraisal of these first 10 years? I find the results have been outstanding in regards to the artistic and pedagogical aspects. We have created a teaching method, which has allowed that over 200 young musicians from two generations consider the orchestra as a place of reference, with students from all around the world, and maybe most importantly, we have created a space where the great masters come to share their knowledge. At the same time, this allowed many important musicians that had become forgotten to come back to their activity, starting with Emilio Balcarce, who hadn’t directed an orchestra in 50 years. As a parallel result, we have created an archive with more than 700 orquesta típica arrangements and more than 500 for bandoneon. We have done dozens of concerts all over the country and in Europe, there have been albums recorded, and there has been a documentary made about the orchestra. On the other hand, we feel that this project isn’t always properly appreciated in some environments. Every year we have terrible budget problems. The orchestra receives it’s main financial support from the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, that gives us their verbal support, but in the day to day reality actually does not help us receive the necessary funds. Sometimes I wonder how much longer we can keep on struggling with all of this. What is TangoVía, an NGO or a commercial enterprise? It is a non-for profit civil association dedicated to preserve, develop, and disseminate tango. This doesn’t mean that it can’t create resources. Moreover: we must create resources, because even though each member of the board of directors makes his own contribution, sometimes it is monetary, sometimes it is work, we are not a foundation with a board of millionaires. Then how do you obtain financial support? We receive income by being Art Directors in several festivals in foreign countries all around the world. There is also a membership system, in which each member pays a yearly fee of at least 100 pesos, which is a symbolic amount that, nonetheless, helps us and allows the members to obtain information and benefits. In fact, we don’t have much money and we don’t spend much money. For each specific project we try to find specific financial support. Who else is TangoVía, besides Varchausky? Andrés Linetzky, Martín Vázquez (musicians), Fabio Cernuda, Fernando Vicente (collectionist), Gustavo Margulies, Roberto Sarfati, Santiago Rosso (cultural producers), Andrés Casak (journalist), Caroline Neal (filmmaker)… We are about 10 to 15 people. I am the President and the Art Director. Why did you take on the role of producer, being a musician? I choose to produce because I have a way of seeing tango that I don’t seem to find in other places. I feel that we Argentines don’t have true awareness of how extraordinary tango is in the history of art. I conceive tango as an elaborated, elegant, original and peculiar art. This conception has many implications, starting by how to produce an album, that sort of photography porque para cada proyecto nos asociamos con alguien que los financia. Se calcula que en todo el perí- from an artist, which can come out sharp or blurry, or with dim lighting. What material, unobtainable today, are we going to be able to get because of the Tango Digital Archive? To begin with, almost every complete discography will be at hand. It is estimated that in the whole analogical period, from 1902 to 1995, there have been around 100.000 tango songs recorded. From that total, barely 20 percent has been reedited in CD. Up to now we have digitalized the complete discographies of Ástor Piazzolla, Alfredo Gobbi, Horacio Salgán, Aníbal Troilo, Carlos Di Sarli, Ignacio Corsini, we are finishing Ricardo Tanturi’s and Libertad Lamarque’s… We estimate that we have already digitalized between 6 and 8 percent of the total. Now, in order to finish this job, we mostly need money. After 3 years of hard work, we know exactly how much material there is, in which formats they’re in, who has them, which internationally recognized procedures we must follow in order to obtain an optimum sound quality, and we have the proper technical equipment. But we need to put together a team of at least 15 people, with which we could finish digitalizing everything in 5 years. No me preocupa tanto. ACCOLADE FOR THE CUCKHOLD (“….Si arrastré por este mundo…”) (1) www.eltangauta.com 178 • AGO 2009 18 Yes, I have done it all. I confess that the sinuous course of modern life has taken me to cheat on more than one gentleman. I recognize that in turn I have also had to wear the horns in many opportunities, and that without taking into account the times in which I did not know it. I have also been known to be the third vertex: the third that made it a crowd, causing disagreement -or was agreement? - and making a cuckold of some poor, sad sister. Right, isosceles, or scalene. Is there someone that has not encountered a triangle in this life? And as if that were not enough, there is the milonga. Nothing more and nothing less, where else could it happen? Mister X was legendarily and consequently cuckolded. Before leaving him, the first wife had cheated on him during several years with a big, dark guy that took care of security at a dance they had on Sundays in Laferrere. After he separated he went out with a Uruguayan girl who, it was soon known, was not traveling to Canelones every other week, but to the Hotel Casino de Piriápolis, and in the company of a lawyer who paid for all the expenses. It seems that during the years in which he was not seen at milongas he lived with a bookkeeper that was younger than him. Little was known about that relationship, although malicious gossip took care of filling the void with all kinds of atrocities. Some time later he returned to the milonga, once more married, to a very short and flirtatious girl that immediately abandoned him for a milonguera who knew how to dance the man’s part and could lead the ocho cortado without missing the beat. Sadly Mister X never managed a similar mastery of the technique. Last Friday I saw him again. Our paths had not crossed in a long time. He was thin and maybe there was more grey in his hair. It was past two in the morning in the place which was overflowing with people when I saw him standing at the corner of the bar: he was nursing a small glass of white wine and —he told me later— observing his new partner while she danced. Mister X had always inspired in me a feeling that went back and forth between pitying him and laughing at him. It was difficult not to be sympathetic with such an unhappy life but a lot more complex was not to laugh about his sorrows, especially in the company of friends. This time, for some strange reason, there was a sense of dignity about him. There was poor Mister X, with the weight of all his failures on his back, believing again in love. Here was I, with all the legends to my credit, showing off again my successful solitude. I went to say hello and he told me that he was dating a hairdresser that he had met at the baptism of a grandnephew. —It is that one, do you see her? The one that is dancing with the pudgy guy with the moustache. — I am very happy for you —I told him— ; she looks like a good girl. Better than I for sure. We laughed. — Yes, she is a good girl —he said as if to himself—. But there are two or three guys with whom she dances with her eyes closed …I am not too worried. It is only two or three; we’ll see. He was a success on Broadway in the 60’s, fighting against the shadow of Valentino. He is the creator of the mythical Tango Argentino choreography. As a tribute to his fifty years with tango, he will be honored in the Tango World Championship. What is your current relationship with tango? I am appearing in Esquina Carlos Gardel from Tuesdays to Sundays. In my show I dance Quejas de bandoneón, La Cumparsita and Danzarín. Those are the three tangos I unfortunately can’t change, I’ve become very used to them. I have a lot of ideas for new shows, new ideas to reinvent my performances. I don’t know if they’re original, but they sure are interesting. | FREE DOWNLOAD THE WHOLE INTERVIEW • www.eltangauta.com out my ideas, I need sponsors, and today in tango, there are no sponsors. It seems as though we don’t have a national industry. Can a person make a living dancing tango? No, unfortunately it always ends up being feast today, famine tomorrow. The thing is that the dancing of tango has no set of rules, so choosing dance routines and fully understanding their meaning ends up depending on personal taste. Besides, there are many people from other disciplines who are using tango. These days, any couple who dances classical, contemporary or folklore music puts on a show with a tango, a milonga and a vals criollo, and with those three dances they are in Hong Kong or Europe the next day. It took me a whole year to be able to travel to New York. But there are several tango shows in Buenos Aires, backed by big investments. It’s an infrastructure that was created for foreigners, “for export”. In most tango places admission is expensive and charged in dollars which makes it inaccessible to the local public I don’t understand how theaters like the Cervantes, the San Martín, the Alvear or the Rivera that could be used to put on good shows at reasonable prices are not taken advantage of. I used to put on a show, in the late 90’s, with truly reasonable prices and discounts for senior citizens. It was called Sentimiento de Tango and singer Alberto Podestá accompanied me, with an orchestra and dancers. It was a respectable show, at the end we danced with the audience, and the people went home very happy. What are the flaws of the ‘for export’ style? There is no seduction. There is no comfort. Tango is two persons connected by feeling. Where is the feeling if I am looking at her, hoping she doesn’t fall, and she is looking at my foot? It’s essential to understand the key points in tango dance. The man has three responsibilities: head, torso and extremities. The woman must know how to accompany a man who knows how to gently show her off, without having to run on stage or make acrobatic movements. I know this because I used to study acrobatics in the US. I studied acrobatics in order to use those movements within the framework of each story I was telling on stage and not to do an acrobatics exhibition. The hardest thing in tango is making it look easy. This dance focuses on knowing how to bite into the floor, that is to say, walking the tango, listening to and interpreting each instrument, as long as the music doesn’t ramble, which tends to be a common mistake in the new tango groups. These days we no longer have masters like Juan D’Arienzo, Osvaldo Pugliese or Aníbal Troilo among us to mark the rhythm clearly. What is your view on the new orquestas típicas? The new generations of musicians are very smart and well prepared, maybe even more so than those of the 40’s. The problem is that they are still trying to prove the quality of what they play, or their ability. So they shelter a lot behind Ástor Piazzolla or in pseudo modernisms like electronic tango, which is a variation that doesn’t take the dance into account. What do you remember about your beginnings as a milonguero? I remember learning very quickly: in two years I became a milonguero. The first time I saw the dance, I went crazy: what they did with their legs, their clothes, the women… and I was still in my school uniform. They used to dance in big spaces, so each man tried to find a small place to show what he could do. And when I saw them, I was daz- ¿Qué opina de las nuevas orquestas típicas? ¡¿ a quién no conocí?! « En el show de Ed Sullivan. Años ´70. « Copes con Aníbal Troilo, Alba Solís y Edmundo Rivero. tango. I even got sent to prison from Atlanta, because they accused the tango environment of being marginal and criminal. So then I made a decision: I gathered a big group of amateur dancers and I organized the first show of dances from Buenos Aires. It was a two-hour show where I told tango stories, performing classic themes like A la Gran Muñeca, Halcón Negro and Organito de la tarde. That was on November 4, 1955. I didn’t consider myself a professional, no way. But I did it. And we filled the theaters with the families of the group members, and everyone was happy. I had ideas that I needed to express and I couldn’t go back to the club. That was about the time when you met entertainment entrepreneur and theater owner, Carlos Petit… Yes, I met with him in his office at the Nacional Theater. I showed him some pictures of the performances that had appeared in the magazine “Grandes valores del tango”, published by Alejandro Romay. The headline of the pictures read, “Tango takes flight like ballet”. Petit was interested and asked me if he could come to see one of my shows. After that I signed my first professional contract, and premiered at the Tabaris and the Nacional Theaters. That was my professional debut: December 30, 1955. The next day, at the New Year’s Eve toast, I said “I won’t stop until I get to New York!” And that’s exactly what happened. What do you remember about your first visit to Broadway? It was in 1962; with María Nieves we became all the rage with our style. That’s why our greatest enemy was actor Rodolfo Valentino. To the North American, English and Canadian public, tango was Valentino, in the way he dressed up in the movie The four horsemen of the Apocalypse. It was only a shallow image. As if you made actor Brad Pitt dance tango choreography. He was the ‘latin lover’. He didn’t know anything about tango. That’s how tango was understood in those latitudes. What made us different was our speed, because in Argentina, the competition between amateurs was all about speed and the neatness of our steps, always to the ground and respecting each orchestra’s style. That’s why in the US they used to call it “a new twist in tango”. They didn’t see us as tango dancers. They called our style “fast tango”. Do you think that tango has become a trend? It’s true that never in the history of our urban music has there been so many milongas, teachers, and professionals. But I believe that people no longer go just for the sake of enjoying the space and the music, and the pleasure of dancing. To me, the real meaning of tango is the symbiosis between the man and the woman, dancing for each other, and showing that they know how to walk the tango. You seem to have a lot to teach… Teaching isn’t easy. There are no subsidies, no one backs you up, one has to do a lot of self-promotion, and many people complain if you charge them ten pesos. They say it’s too much. Besides, in the first class you have fifty students, then in the second class you have thirty, then twenty. So I end up teaching for serious foreign entities. For instance, I’ve recently finished a seminar for the University of Columbia and another one for a first class German factory, who sent two hundred of its workers to Buenos Aires. I also teach private classes to foreigners, according to their importance and if they accept my price without getting scared. Nevertheless, I have a project about teaching popular classes, but I am still organizing it. I 37 www.eltangauta.com 178 • AGO 2009 zled. From that night on, my life changed. I’ll never forget it: I used to work in the Ministry of Education, I studied electronics, and at night I attended some any milonga. Some years after that, in the Club Atlanta, where I became the leader, I learned that he who performed a lot of steps lost elegance. The elegant ones were those who danced with very few steps. I created my own style by merging those two ideas: making just the right amount of long, feline, paused, calm steps. Always respecting the music to death. And the moment would come while I was dancing, when I started to feel something so special in my stomach, which was transmitted to my whole body and tears would pour from my eyes (it happened for instance while dancing Recuerdos by Pugliese). I had to put on a poker face, of course. The woman respected my feelings, or sometimes cried with me. We cried while we were dancing. That is not something you can fake on stage. Why did you decide to go from being amateur to professional? It wasn’t my decision. I would have stayed and died at the Club Atlanta if tango would have kept the same line and the same value. But they sunk Juan Carlos Copes » Foto gentileza Copes. “A fuego lento”, me responde. • Para ver | To watch: www.eltangauta.com Versión digital: clic para leer más DESCARGA GRATIS LA ENTREVISTA COMPLETA www.eltangauta.com 178 • AGO 2009 38 would be involved with the slums and in the fight against crack cocaine. Without a doubt, with your skills and your experience, you are definitely a master. I hate that word. I’ve been in tango for more than fifty years, and everyone calls me a master, but I don’t take it seriously, even though I know that I have all the codes to teach. You also don’t like being a juror. I’ve been a juror a few times, but I don’t want to do it again for two reasons: because I’ve always been the oldest and the most experienced of all the jurors, I’ve seen the genre evolve. So I end up being judge, but also executioner. The most important thing to me is that they dance tango, no matter how they do it. Besides, giving a couple a prize means turning the rest into enemies, even if you don’t want to, because you have to make a choice. Once, there was a couple of little children who had been dressed as in the old days: the little boy was dressed as a “compadrito” (swaggerer, upstart) and the girl as a “milonguera”. So I asked their coach what tango they had danced, and he answered “A fuego | FREE DOWNLOAD THE WHOLE INTERVIEW • www.eltangauta.com lento”. And so I answered back. “Do you really think that it is the appropriate clothing for that song? Do you really think that tango stopped in those times? If so, we need to urgently create a Museum of Tango and give up with our intentions of having the genre progress” What do you see for sure in your future? One thing I’m sure of is that I will keep on going until the end. My slogan is “tell The Grim Reaper to start learning some steps, because Copes is going to leave dancing” TANGO ARGENTINO How do you remember the Tango Argentino show phenomenon? It was an unprecedented success. At first we only had one week in the Chatelet Theater in Paris, but the impact in the audience exceeded all our expectations. We thought that those fervent spectators where all Argentines exiled in Paris, but then we realized they where more than three thousand Parisians. I will not forget our trip from Argentina to France: we were 33 people travelling in a military plane, with only one meal in the whole flight. There was an Exocet missile from the Malvinas War on board that had never exploded. When we returned, after the success, then we flew on a regular commercial flight. Did you feel at that time that you were protagonist of a historic change in tango? No, not yet. To the point that after our performances in Italy, that were a similar success than those in Paris, I turned in an envelope with my letter of resignation to Claudio Segovia and Héctor Orezzoli where I also detailed all the mistakes they had made in their role as directors. The most important one was that they didn’t know how to delegate, or didn’t want to. That was the reason why Horacio Salgán y Ubaldo De Lío left as well. We patched things up after some time, and then came the success on Broadway, in my case, for the second time. In those years, I met Marta Graham, Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Robert Duvall… I can’t remember whom I did not meet! SAURA’S TANGO What do you remember about your leading role in the movie Tango, by acclaimed Spanish director, Carlos Saura? Saura was interested in me being part of that project from the beginning. We talked a lot before we started shooting the movie, especially about diverse and small details of the history of tango. It had much more impact in other parts of the world than in our own country. How many Argentine movies about tango are there? This movie is one of the few that gives transcendence to tango as dance. The people in our country don’t treasure tango. There is a scale that goes: first the singer, then the musician, then the dancer, as if we were a mobile scenography. This happens because it’s a popular phenomenon, and we Argentines are very mystical: Carlos Gardel, Julio Sosa, Roberto Goyeneche. The same with the musicians: he who is a fan of one doesn’t like the other, and so on. It’s very difficult, so somehow it is a triumph to last twenty years and still be in business. It has been a great struggle, a lot of work but also a lot of joy and satisfaction, I practically know the whole world thanks to tango and the bandoneon. I have even been to the same place several times: I have been to Holland at least twenty times, between trips with the Osvaldo Pugliese orchestra and with Color Tango. So it’s nice because I have friends all over the world, and it is because of work and effort, but it has been experienced with great pleasure because it is what I like to do. I complain sometimes about all the red tape prior to travel or when we have to play very late at a milonga in Buenos Aires, but after I am up on the stage I am the happiest guy in the world. The Orquesta Color Tango is characterized by maintaining the existing style of Osvaldo Pugliese. Why this choice? Osvaldo Pugliese’s style is unique for several reasons. He came from the orchestra of Julio de Caro, who was the creator of tango arrangements. Pugliese added a rhythm that is uneven, unlike that of the orchestra of Juan D´Arienzo, who was the savior of tango in his time with his unmistakable rhythm. But hi is a square and even rhythm and Pugliese’s is exactly the opposite. His rhythm is at times faster and at times slower. It is very difficult to interpret this style because you can’t write what is played. In other orchestras, if a musician can read, he can play. The orchestra of Don Osvaldo is like ours in the sense that it is completely different: a musician cannot come as a substitute because without rehearsing he cannot play. Everything is done with the rehearsal. That is why Pugliese is attractive and different. The proof is that his orchestra is one of the most sought after, especially by dancers. Why do we work so much abroad? Many of the teachers of the world use our cds to teach to dance. With Pugliese, the Pugliese ¿Por qué esa elección? La Orquesta en Düsseldorf, Alemania. that was born and died with him. There is nothing more to discover in his style. You also work as a cooperative? Yes, the Color Tango Orchestra works the same as that of Pugliese’s. I follow all of its guidelines because it seems to me that they are extraordinary and very helpful, but to be a cooperative has its pros and cons. We are all owners of the orchestra, so there is a community interest to function well. We all know how much money is going to be made; the budgets are consulted with everyone. This does not mean that we earn the same; each one has a score according to, among other characteristics, age and function. If we have any extra expenses, everyone contributes because it benefits all. What is the disadvantage? The small disadvantage is that as the musician knows that he owns the orchestra, he might miss a rehearsal or a presentation to meet another professional commitment, where if you don’t attend, you are fired. The way to avoid this situation is talking about how our orchestra works, to explain clearly the importance of the commitment, that is, putting Color Tango first, and any other work second. Here you cannot send a replacement. In this regard I also follow the guidelines of Pugliese: when I joined his orchestra they were trying out bandoneon players, many of them superior to me, nonetheless he chose me because he saw many conditions and possibilities to get from me more than from an acclaimed musician, who would probably already had a defined style and a career. It must have been difficult to tell Pugliese that you were leaving the orchestra… I had told the master that with some members of his orchestra we were forming a sextet with outside musicians, that we were slowly preparing for the day when he decided to stop. But a possible tour of Holland appeared for the sextet. We decided to ask for permission, because we had no intentions to quit. He said that since we had started another project, it was best to leave the orchestra, and he suggested that we had a farewell drink, which was always proposed when a musician left. And with much sadness in our souls we left. Did the trip allow you to strengthen professionally? The tour through Holland was great: we did more than twenty-five concerts throughout the country. We even recorded a compact disc, a format that at that time did not exist in Argentina. The result of our tour was extremely positive. We had debuted in Europe and recorded an album in a top-level studio; we felt that we had a little path open. However, we returned to Argentina and reality was not like that. It was a tough stage in terms of work until some Italian businessmen turned up that called us to do two tours in Italy every year as part of a company. And this was what kept the orchestra in business: we continued because we knew that we had these tours. Did that ease the situation in Argentina? 41 www.eltangauta.com 178 • AGO 2009 dancer can show off, do different movements, mark the beat. Another reason is that you have been part of the Pugliese orchestra for eleven years? Exactly, also in my youth he was one of the musicians I admired the most, so I know his style very well. To invent or make something that stands out in tango is very difficult; you can’t because everything has already been done with tango. Everything. In any case, in Color Tango, we aren’t doing exactly the same style as Pugliese, because we have our own arrangements. Without meaning to we have been building our own personality. Hopefully someone appears like D´Arienzo did in his time, or like Astor Piazzolla in his. But it is very difficult. The challenge, of course, is for the younger generations, who must look within these color palettes – the tango orchestras- to try to develop them and continue to go forward. Pugliese left an open path that can keep on developing. DESCARGA GRATIS www.eltangauta.com 178 • AGO 2009 42 No, there were people from the scene that boycotted us for having left the orchestra of Don Osvaldo. The small contracts that we got were terminated because those people called the places where we were going to play to say that Pugliese would never play there again. And then the presentation was cancelled. It was a really hard stage. It so happens now that great musicians who have criticized us, perform songs by Pugliese for companies that want it…then it turns out that we were ahead of our time! Because we didn’t even have the obligation, we did what we felt. I made this choice to give continuity to the style. It would have been a crime to lose it with the passing of time. Once we went to talk to Lydia, the widow of Pugliese, and proposed to her to make an album with material that Osvaldo had left written but not recorded, and was running the risk of remaining tucked away in a drawer. It was a real challenge, for example, I ended up composing the song A los obreros gráficos that Don Osvaldo had left unfinished. The arrangements of all the works are also ours. But the greatest challenge was to make them sound like the style of Pugliese because we didn’t have a sample to listen… like when we worked with recordings. And we made it. But I Milonga, world champions of Tango Salon and of think the most important aspect is psychological. Ahí se puede If in those three minutes of competition you’re not mentally stable, you risk wasting months of work. Our nerves can betray us, or certain variables that come up at the last minute, like the floor, the lighting, or the audience. Before actually competing the hardest part is convincing the couple of the necessity of forming between the two an artistic unit, so that what the audience sees is a couple and not two separate dancers. First I create a choreographic design that goes well with the attributes of the couple. Then I dedicate myself to forming that artistic unit. While working on specific sequences or steps, I look for a way to make it pleasing to the eye, then we get rid of small inconveniences, like for instance in the movements or the ward-robe so that she doesn’t get her heel stuck in her skirt. Finally, the couple has to feel comfortable knowing that they have all the necessary information, like a car needing to have the right amount of gas for the required distance to be traveled. How long does the preparation take? It depends on the expectations of the couple. To fight for the first places, in Stage I recommend 5 or 6 months, obviously talking about a couple with previous experience together. Starting three months before the competition, in the first month we practice one or two times a week, in the second month two or three times, and in the last 20 days we have to practice everyday. In the training for Salon we can take the intensity down a notch as long as the couple balances out that reduction by going to milongas or dancing a little in private. Fortunately, in Salon, you can reproduce a situation similar to that of the competition. In Stage however, how can the competitors be able to hire a theater and 10,000 people audience to watch them? Besides, Stage demands more sacrifices because it is more physically demanding. What is special about the Salon category? I put emphasis on the capacity to listen, the couple must interpret each orquestra the right way. That is the way they can distinguish themselves, because it is obvious that everyone who gets to the final can dance very well. On the other hand, since a tango is more improvised, the man has more responsibility as far as the performance goes than in Stage because he is the one who decides on the musicality, the space, the lead, and the steps. It is also impor- PERFIL Fotos gentileza Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. –C.B. ANONYMOUS HEROES "It is an urgent task, being that discs break and tapes demagnetize. There are things that can be lost forever in a simple domestic accident”, warned Ignacio Varchausky last June 17, during the formal presentation of the Tango Digital Archive in the “Alianza Francesa”. This was the way he chose to refer to the challenge of digitalizing all the discographies recordings in order to preserve them from those imponderable events, from the inexorable deterioration that the years can bring, and from the dispersion many albums suffer after a collectionist dies. “Besides preserving the material in a more enduring format, digitalization allows students, musicians, investigators and curious people in general to access tens of thousands of recordings that aren’t available today in the market”, stated the bass player. Also, the file would allow us to listen better to the music that has been reedited in CD format. According to the sound demonstration that took place the night of the presentation, the sound quality that came out from a proper chain of recording was far superior to that of the CD’s edited in recording companies. “In some cases, even the speed is incorrect, because it was recorded off tempo”, he added, before illustrating his point by playing a tango by Carlos Di Sarli’s orchestra, both with and without the most rigorous procedures. After reminding that some recording companies threw away or re-recorded their own tango production molds, the bass player explained that not everything was bad news. “Thanks to the collectionists we were able to recover a hidden treasure. They are the heroes in this story”, he assured before handing out a souvenir with an LP shape to honor the contributions of the Argentines Hamlet Peluso, Quico Fernández, Carlos Puente, Mario Nachón, Enrique Binda, Oscar del Priore, Jorge De Broque, Domingo Durán, Pablo Taboada, Guada Aballe and Eduardo Visconti, and of the Uruguayans Boris Puga and Horacio Llorente. –C.B. Which codes have been kept since your time, and which codes have not? Let’s just say that the century has changed, the city of Buenos Aires has changed, and so has the economy. We still ask the woman to dance from a distance, but we must not forget that this is a time where women sometimes are more assertive than men. To think that in my time girls would always be accompanied by an aunt or a sister, but never by themselves! Was the role of the man also different? The man had to think, he had to know how to transmit and get results. And all of that had to be done while generating a symbiosis, making it look like one body with four legs. Always by means of seduction. The woman couldn’t be just hanging. It was almost like a real life embrace. Within that frame, the speed of the dance depended on the orchestra. With D’Arienzo we couldn’t do too many things, with others like Troilo, Pugliese or Di Sarli, we could. And what about the competition between the clubs or the neighborhoods? We knew that if we were going to Mataderos, we would have to show respect until they got to know us. It would take some time. Sometimes a local woman would come and talk to you, but it was only to make her man jealous. The same would happen in my club, Atlanta, where I was the leader. The competition started in the last three songs. A simple bumping or an out of place look would be the start of a brawl, and we ended fighting in the street. These days things have changed. Fights are caused by much “heavier” reasons. I keep myself informed because I listen to the young milongueros, the ones who dance well, who tell me that the new kids learn very fast, but practice in one spot on the dance floor, which means that they block the circulation of the milonga or they cut right in front of you on the dance floor. Clearly, that is breaking the codes. He also trained dancers; composed and worked with Astor Piazzolla and other great characters from the music of Buenos Aires. In 1964 he filmed the first instructional video in the United States and took tango dance to the much-dreamt-about Broadway and the rest of the world. Thanks to him, tango is what it is today. He was never selfish and always gave room to young people to generate continuous growth. Juan Carlos Copes makes me proud as an artist and father! In the 60's and 70's, when the genre had nearly disappeared, he continued betting against the odds.
