esus' temptations are for material well-being, political power, and what? What do you think the temptation from the Temple's parapet was about? Was it
just a "pain-free life," if so, why go to the Temple for it?
Maybe it was, subtly, the temptation to escape death!
What would Jesus do to be able to escape death? What
would any human being do, or not stop at doing, for the
opportunity to live forever? (Of course, we'd want to
look like we looked at 19 or at 29!) The accompanying
readings consist of a thanksgiving offering--not an offering asking God to do MORE for me in the future--but,
thanking God for the blessings already given--blessings
totally undeserved--and along with that reading, the
comment from St. Paul, that "no one who believes in
(i.e, relies on) God will be put to shame." The first and
second readings remind us of what God has done for us,
and give us the wherewithal to trust God into the future,
so Jesus doesn't need to "try to get around God's decree
of death for all human beings," for He can trust God will
have something more in mind--something even better,
that will make this life time, as wonderful as it may have
been, look like the slavery in Egypt! So Jesus puts His
trust in the God who rewarded us with underserved
bounty in the past to bestow greater bounty on us in the
world to come, so He rejects temptation. Can we do the
same? When it would be easier to get something by unscrupulous means, can we, too, simply trust God to provide something better?

¿

Lent is our 40 day experience to recall the story of
God's saving love affair with us and to grow in
gratitude for mercy so near. We need to ask God to
be near us in our trouble and heal us. The Liturgy
and the word of God should be our guide to living
the death and resurrection of Jesus more clearly this
year. May these gifts help you grow more
grateful for God's unconditional and merciful love and experience God's nearness this
Lent.
Have a blessed week,

National Catholic Sisters Week
To shine a spotlight on the profound impact of Catholic Sisters in our communities and around the world, and in conjunction with National Women’s History Month, the third annual National Catholic Sisters Week (NCSW) will be held
on March 8-14, 2016.
NCSW was created to honor women religious through a series of events, taking place across the country, that instruct,
enlighten and bring greater focus to the lives of these incredible women. It’s our chance to recognize everything sisters
have done for us.
In the five regions of our archdiocese celebrations will be held which will feature the showing of “Women in Spirit,” a
DVD that traces the history of the sisters’ contributions to the church in the USA, and an opportunity to meet and speak
with sisters from our region.
Our region’s event will take place on Sunday,
March 6th at 7:30 p.m. at the USC Caruso Catholic Center, 844 W. 32nd St., Los Angeles, CA 90007.
