CONFESSIONS SATURDAYS TUESDAYS 8:30 am to 10:00 am 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm T his past Wednesday, our Blessed Lord did another mighty deed in our parish community. Ninety-seven of the eighth graders from our very own Saint Theresa Catholic School received the Sacrament of Confirmation through the outstretched hands and invocation of the Holy Spirit by the Most Reverend Thomas G Wenski, D.D., Archbishop of Miami. It was a beautiful celebration of faith, family, and parish. Love, joy, and the Spirit’s seven-fold gifts were in abundance. The mystery of God in history continued to be palpably felt through Christ’s ministering Church. Our parish couldn’t help but to be inspired and PROUD. The miraculous deeds and saving actions of Jesus, of course, began long ago at the Wedding at Cana, described in this weekend’s Gospel pericope. Jesus’ own mother occasioned that first miracle. Mary was present with Jesus at the Wedding at Cana. In her example, we can find great spiritual fruit for reflection on the mystery of being “full and complete” disciples of Christ, a lesson which our confirmandi would do well to emulate, as they are now anointed to bear witness to the Lord and His love in the world. Mary’s virtues and characteristics are particularly revealing for us as we are gathered for this weekend’s liturgy. The Holy Spirit, having been so active in her life, made her open, ready, and docile to a life of holy love. In a world so often characterized by selfishness and godlessness, the Church is called upon to imitate the virtues and charity of Mary, which was surely the most noticeable feature of her fruitful spiritual personality in the service of God. The Wedding of Cana story show’s Our Lady’s charity and selflessness in numerous ways. It captures her loving personality, obviously shaped by the Holy Spirit. The Wedding of Cana story shows her service to others. She was there in advance, behind the scenes, attending to the details of loving hospitality. Her charity is seen in her kindness and faith. In her attentiveness, she was aware of when needs arose, and she noticed what needed to be done. Love always does that: expands our hearts and increases our awareness. Her willingness to intercede clearly identified her as a woman of action; she got involved to make a difference. Her delicacy in handling situations with sensitivity to the feelings of others shows her tender compassion and a charitable willingness to sacrifice and serve. The way in which her faith directed her to follow Jesus, our Life, is encapsulated in today’s quote of quotes. Referring to Jesus, Mary said, “do whatever He tells you.” It was her best motherly advice; it was also perfect Mariology! She always points people to her Son Jesus, to Wisdom, to the Way that others can be their best. Our Lady’s charity always directs us, as well, to follow Jesus. Her course of action at the wedding that day, was but a precursor to a life of faithful discipleship. It bore a strong testimony to the profound faith she had in her Son, a faith that directs others likewise to follow Him. Being anointed by the chrism oil of love and gladness leads us all to introduce others to Jesus. Our discipleship of Jesus would be ineffectual without it. Mary did not wait for signs and wonders to strengthen her faith and act; rather her faith in Jesus preceded all prodigies. Mary’s role of faith and charity at the wedding that day was an essential catalyst to the development of the scene, which culminated in our Lord’s first miracle. It is a paradigm for all of us who make up the ministering Church. Even as we congratulate our confirmandi, we challenge them, as we do ourselves, to follow the example of the faith and charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to be “full and complete disciples,” docile to the Spirit, with personalities that help us to bear witness to the Lord and His love in the world. 2711 Indian Mound Trail Coral Gables, Florida 33134 Phone: (305) 446-9950 www.cotlf.org Mrs. Irma Aguilar Ext. 300 Receptionist Data Processing Coordinator Mrs. Maria Elena Chialastri Ext. 306 Office Manager Administrative Assistant to the Pastor Mr. Luis Cuza Associate Director of Liturgical Music Mr. Juan Del Sol Ext. 311 Wedding Coordinator Dr. Dawn Fontana Ext. 305 Director of Liturgical Music Ms. Cecilia Miyar Ext. 310 Administrative Assistant to the DRE Parish Coordinator of Ministries Mr. Jorge Perez Congratulations to our Newly Baptized: Teresa Grace Trombadore, Juliet Arabella Garcia, Julia Andrea Martinez, Dylan Andres Reyes, Luna Marie Reyes Congratulations and God’s Blessings to those Joined in Holy Matrimony: Rest in Peace. — Isaías 62:2 — 1saiah 62:2 L ife is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today’s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
