cualquier porte y se encuentra a 1
hora de vuelo desde La Habana y
a menos de 1 hora desde Varadero, Holguín y Santiago de Cuba. En Santa Lucía opera un aeródromo para naves de pequeño
porte.
Bautizado en 1514 con el nombre
de Santa María del Puerto Príncipe, es un territorio marcado por
la prosperidad económica que lo
caracterizó siempre. La ganadería
fue la principal fuente de riqueza
de los lugareños desde mediados
del siglo XVI.
Los dos principales atractivos de
la región son la Playa de Santa
Lucía y la ciudad de Camagüey.
Excelentes playas, sitios de buceo
y pesca deportiva y una urbe de
esplendor singular coexisten en
el territorio.
La naturaleza posee un alto nivel
de conservación. En los cayos del
norte vive gran cantidad de especies de la flora y la fauna. La reserva ecológica Sierra de Cubitas
nos permite caminar entre colinas de verde y húmeda flora, explorar cavernas, navegar en un
laberinto de islas casi vírgenes y
atravesar llanos con sabor a caña
de azúcar.

Potencia deportiva mundial. Ostenta
la supremacía del orbe en disciplinas como el boxeo y el béisbol.

Símbolos Nacionales
Bandera
El triángulo equilátero es una alusión
a las ansias de libertad, igualdad y fraternidad, y su color rojo presagia la
sangre que sería necesario verter
para conquistar la independencia. La
estrella solitaria situada en medio del
triángulo es símbolo de absoluta
libertad. Las tres listas azules representan los departamentos (Occidente, Centro y Oriente) en que se
encontraba dividida la Isla y las dos
franjas blancas significan la pureza y
la virtud del pueblo cubano.
Escudo
Tiene la configuración de una
adarga ojival. En
su campo superior, una llave
dorada simboliza
la posición clave de la Isla, a la entrada
del Golfo de México y entre las dos
Américas, mientras el sol naciente
representa el surgimiento de una
nueva nación. Tres listas azules en el
cuartel inferior izquierdo aluden a los
departamentos en que se dividía el
país en la época colonial. En el cuartel
inferior derecho la palma real (símbolo
de la hidalguía y serena firmeza del
cubano), las montañas y el cielo azul
representan el típico paisaje de la Isla.
Un haz de once varas que simboliza
la unidad de los cubanos en su lucha
por la libertad sirve de soporte al
escudo, coronado por un gorro frigio
de color rojo en el cual aparece una
estrella blanca. Orlan el escudo, a la

derecha, una rama de encina y a la
izquierda una de laurel, que representan la fortaleza y la victoria.
Himno Nacional
Su música y letra fueron compuestas
por el patriota bayamés Pedro
(Perucho) Figueredo al inicio de las
gestas independentistas. Como canción patriótica y grito de guerra fue
entonado, por primera vez, el 20 de
octubre de 1868 por la población de la
villa de San Salvador de Bayamo,
región oriental del país.
Flor nacional
La Mariposa, especie de jazmín de
color blanco y exquisito perfume.
Árbol nacional
La Palma Real, de notoria existencia
en el paisaje campestre cubano, pese
a no ser oriunda del país, simboliza el
carácter indoblegable del cubano.
Ave nacional
El Tocororo, especie
endémica que reproduce en su plumaje
los colores de la
Bandera Nacional.

General Data
The biggest island in the Caribbean,
is located at the entrance to the Gulf
of México. The archipelago is
formed by 4 195 different sized
islands and is 110 922 square
kilometres wide. The Republic of
Cuba is composed of 14 provinces,

Population
Over 11 120 000 inhabitants.
Education
Education in Cuba is free and
compulsory. In 1961 Cuba carried

National Symbols
The Flag
The equilateral triangle is a clear
reference to the yearning for liberty,
equality and fraternity. The color red
portends the spilling of blood that
would be required to win
independence.
The single star located in the middle
of the triangle is a symbol of
absolute freedom.
The three blue stripes represent the
eastern, central and western
provinces into which the island was
formerly divided. The two white strips
signify the purity and virtue of the
Cuban people.
Shield
This is gothic shaped. On the upper
parts there is a golden key that
symbolizes the key position of the
island, at the entrance to the Gulf of
Mexico and between the two
Americas while the rising sun
represents a new nation. Three blue
strips in the bottom left section are a
reference to the regions into which
the country was divided during the
colonial period. In the bottom right
section, the royal palm (symbol of
the nobility and the steadfastness of
Cubans), the mountains and the clear
blue sky represent a typical Cuban
landscape.
A bundle of eleven staff that
symbolizes the unity of the Cuban
people in the struggle for freedom
supports the shield, crowned by a
Phrygian cap on which there is a white
star. Bordering the shield, to the right,
there is an oak branch, and to the left,
a laurel branch, representing strength
and victory.
National Anthem
The music and lyrics were composed
by Pedro (Perucho) Figueredo, from
Bayamo, at the start of the
independence struggles. As a patriotic
song, it was sung for the first time
on October 20, 1868, by the
inhabitants of Bayamo.

Butterfly lily (a type of white-colored
jasmine that is exquisitely perfumed)

whose plumage has the same colors

es una de las que mejor conserva las características hispanoárabes del urbanismo y la arquitectura. Sus numerosas iglesias
poseen significativos ejemplos
del arte y las costumbres religiosofunerarias de la época colonial.
Posee el centro histórico más
extenso del país (313 ha), declarado Monumento Nacional.
Su diseño urbanístico es singular
en Cuba. Se caracteriza por calles
y callejones angostos y tortuosos,
que conforman un laberíntico trazado. El final u origen de las vías
lo constituyen las plazas y plazuelas que el crecimiento de la villa
fue convirtiendo en puntos céntricos. Entre las fuertes tradiciones
de la región figura la alfarería,
que data del siglo XVII.

páginas de amor en tierras cubanas. En el territorio nacieron también Carlos J. Finlay, sabio que con

tropical, y Gertrudis Gómez de
Avellaneda, una de las figuras más
importantes de las letras hispanoamericanas. Otros hijos ilustres de
la región son el filósofo Enrique
José Varona, el pintor que fue
Fidelio Ponce y el Poeta Nacional,
Nicolás Guillén.
Camagüey es tierra de leyendas,
de los tinajones y las iglesias, de

century. It is characterized by the
presence of Nuestra Señora del
Carmen Church, built in 1825, the
only two-tower church of the
region and one of the three of
its kind in the interior of Cuba.
Architectonical design expresses
the synthesis of an austere
baroque and neoclassicism. The
entire ambience preserves an
atmosphere of intimacy that
immediately takes you to the
epoch of romantic rendezvous.
Plaza de los Trabajadores
Recibió el nombre actual a inicios
de los años 60. Fue sede de los
primeros actos masivos del movimiento obrero camagüeyano.
Anteriormente se denominaba
Plaza de la Merced. En su entorno
encontramos la Iglesia de
Nuestra Señora de la Merced
cuyo origen se remonta a un
pequeño templo de madera en
1601. El templo y el convento
actuales datan de 1748. El patio
claustral es ejemplo de la arquitectura colonial. Conserva piezas
significativas del arte religiosofunerario hispanoamericano de
los siglos XVIII y XIX, como el
Santo Sepulcro (1762). Posee un
conservado fragmento de sus
antiguas criptas. Además, encontramos la Casa Natal de Ignacio
Agramonte, la Casa de la Cultura
Camagüeyana, el edificio de
Correos de Cuba y la Sede de los
Artesanos de Cuba.

It got its present name at the
beginning of 1960´s. It was the
place where the first political
gatherings of workers in
Camaguey took place. Before
that it was called Plaza de la
Merced. There we have Nuestra
Señora de la Merced Church
which was a small wooden temple in 1601. The temple and convent that we have there today
are from 1748. The cloistered yard
is an example of colonial architecture. We can observe significant pieces from the HispanoAmerican religious-funerary art
from the 18th and 19th centuries,
such as the Holy Sepulcher
(1762). They have preserved a
fragment of its former crypts. We
also find in the surroundings, the
house where patriot Ignacio
Agramonte was born, the Casa
de la Cultura Camagüeyana, the
Post Office Building and the Site
of Cuban Artisans.
Solidarity Square
From the beginnings of the 17th
century, formerly it was named
after Nuestra Señora de la
Soledad Church. First as a hermit,
it already existed in 1697. It was
concluded and erected as parish
church in 1701. They began to
build the present temple in 1733
and its construction was over in
1776. Its central nave has a ceiling of a great artistic value and a
decorated dome. In it, great personalities such as Ignacio
Agramonte, Gertrudis Gómez de
Avellaneda and some others
were baptized. The baptismal
fountain they have there today,
made of marble, was ordered
from Barcelona (1863).

It is the principal park of the city,
it comprises part of the area of
the old Plaza de Armas (1528).
There is an equestrian statue of
Mayor General Ignacio
Agramonte. On one side of the
park we have the former Iglesia
Mayor, today Metropolitan
Cathedral, dedicated to Nuestra
Señora de la Candelaria, patron
saint of the city. The primitive
temple was built in 1617, rebuilt
at the end of 17 century and
beginning of the 18 century. It
has a tower with the image of
Christ (1937). We also have in

Casino Campestre Park
Created as a public park at the
beginning of the 20th century. It
is the largest park within a Cuban
city. It has important monuments: the Ceiba de la Libertad

Funda del Catre (oficialmente
Ramón Ponte) se llamó antiguamente Callejón de la Poza del
Mate, debido a que en su extremo, a orillas del río Hatibonico,
existían esas plantas. El nombre
popular se impuso a causa de su
estrechez: era imposible que
pasaran por allí dos caballos juntos o se cruzaran en sentido contrario. Es el más estrecho de la
parte antigua de la ciudad. Mide
2.20 metros de ancho en su
tramo más angosto y se alarga
por 77 metros.

Funda del Catre (officially Ramón
Ponte) was formerly called
Callejón de la Poza del Mate,
because in one of its ends, at the
shore of Hatibonico River, we had
those plants. The popular name
got its own way because it was
very narrow: It was impossible for
two horses to go side by side or
crossing when going in opposite
directions. It is the narrowest alley
in the old part of the city. It is 2.20
meters wide in its narrowest part
and it is 77 large.

It is a house from the second half
of the 18th century, re-furbished

was born here. It was inaugurated

house is a typical example of the
architectonical design of the
colonial period.

de bailes y coloridos desfiles de
carrozas, comparsas y congas con
grupos musicales de barrio que

Área protegida Sierra del Chorrillo
Sierra del Chorrillo Reservoir
e accede a esta región desde
la ciudad de Camagüey, por la
SCarretera
Central rumbo a
Santiago de Cuba. A partir del
Jimbambay hacia el Sur, a 24 km,
está el poblado de Cuatro Camino
(cabecera del municipio Najasa),
y desde allí a 12 km se encuentra
esta área protegida.
Presenta un clima de llanuras y
alturas interiores con humedecimiento estacional, alta evaporación y alta temperatura del aire.
Las temperaturas corresponden al
régimen térmico muy cálido con
medias anuales entre 24 - 26 ºC.
Las temperaturas diarias sobrepasan los 30 ºC, como es característico de un clima tropical.
En la región se observan tres elevaciones fundamentales: Sierra
del Chorrillo con la cota más alta
324.2 metros (La Bayamesa),
Sierra de Najasa y Guaicanámar.
En la primera se encuentra el
punto geográfico más alto del
territorio.

Dentro del área protegida se
encuentra el Rancho La Belén,
donde usted puede disfrutar de
actividades como la exhibición de
sementales equinos, paseo
ecuestre por el sendero Santa
Gertrudis, observación de aves
por el Sendero de las Aves y servicios de alojamiento, gastronomía,
bar, restaurante y piscina.

una pradera donde se observan
diversas especies de palmas
guana, palma real y la palma de
Najasa (Cocotrinax amocicata),
endémico local de gran belleza
que solo crece sobre roca caliza.
Entre la fauna se encuentran aves
como la cartacuba, el tocororo, el
catey, el carpintero verde y la
cotorra, todas de gran colorido,
fauna exótica como el venado
coliblanco, cebras, ankoles, antílope negro. Otro atractivo del
lugar es la cueva de Gaspar
Najasa, de especial interés para
espeleólogos.

Recorrido fascinante con una

Bosque Fósil
Como se ha llamado por científicos, consiste en una concentración de remanentes de árboles

Eentresdelelsuspaís,
extremos, situados en la
Península de Hicacos (Matanzas) y
la Bahía de Nuevitas. Está formado
por 2 517 islas, cayos y cayuelos, y
de acuerdo con características geomorfológicas, suele dividírsele en
cinco cayerías. El quinto grupo lo
constituyen, entre otros, los cayos
Coco -en el polo turístico de
Jardines del Rey-, Romano,
Guajaba y Sabinal, clasificados
como islas por sus magnitudes y
por presentar manto freático.
Este último conjunto se sitúa
entre las bahías de Buena Vista y
Nuevitas, a lo largo de 193 km
que forman casi una línea continua. Sus 991 islas y cayos están
separados por estrechos canales
que ponen en comunicación al
Canal Viejo de Bahamas con las
bahías interiores de Perro, Jigüey
y La Gloria.
Sabinal es, junto a la playa de
Santa Lucía, la escolta de la entra-
da a la Bahía de Nuevitas. En el
emplazamiento del archipiélago,
visto de este a oeste, le sigue
Cayo Guajaba, que tiene 107 km²
y 11 km de playas, presenta
pequeñas colinas y una vegetación permanente.
Más adelante, Romano, con 925
km², la tercera isla en extensión
del archipiélago cubano, luego
de Cuba e Isla de la Juventud.
Tiene elevaciones y lagunas interiores permanentes. Las ruinas de
Versalles, una frustrada villa de
colonos franceses en su parte
más oriental, enriquecen las
leyendas de Romano.
Cayo Cruz, con una extensión de
18 km², tiene 12 km de playas de
finísimas arenas, aguas transparentes y diversos paisajes.
Mégano Grande y Paredón
Grande, con 5 y 7 km² respectivamente, también atesoran hermosas playas con caprichosas formaciones costeras.

La leyenda del Tinajón
El tinajón es el símbolo camagüeyano
por antonomasia. Constituye la
representación lugareña más enraizada.
Por ello, a Camagüey se le conoce en
toda Cuba como la ciudad de los
tinajones.
El tinajón tiene antecedentes en la vasija
andaluza. Fue la solución con la que
alfareros procedentes del sur de España,
asentados tempranamente en Puerto
Príncipe, trocaron en almacenes de agua
los recipientes antes empleados para
guardar granos, vinos, aceites y otros
líquidos.
Su producción tuvo el mayor auge en
las décadas centrales del siglo XIX, a
partir de 1868. Todo hogar de
Camagüey tenía al menos un tinajón. El
agua contenida dentro las frescas paredes era empleada para beber y cocinar, y
se hizo brindis acostumbrado a las visitas de propios y extraños. Y muchos de
estos terminaban casándose aquí... Por ello, antaño y aún hoy suele decirse, en
noviazgos y bodas al galán:
¡Ese tomó agua de tinajón!
The legend of the Big Earthenware Jar
The earthenware jar (tinajón) is the symbol of Camagüeya par antonomasia. It
constitutes the most enrooted local representation. Because of that, Camagüey
is known in all Cuba as the city of the tinajones.
The tinajón has its antecedents in the Andalusia jar. It was a solution used by
earthenware artisans coming from the south of Spain, settled in early times in
Puerto Príncipe, who stored water in recipients formerly used to store grains,
wines, oils and other liquids.
There was a booming production during the central decades of 19th century,
from 1868 on mainly. Every home in Camagüey had at least one tinajón. The
water contained within the fresh walls of these recipients was used for drinking
and cooking, and it became a custom to offer it to local visitors and foreigners.
And many of the new-comers ended up getting married here... that's why, some
time ago and even now people say, to courting couples and at weddings to the
groom:
That one drank water from the tinajón!

Distante 110 km de la ciudad de Camagüey, está resguardada por la más extensa
formación coralina de Cuba y es idónea para el buceo y los deportes náuticos.
En sus inmediaciones se localizan los cayos Sabinal, Romano, Cruz y Guajaba.
Estos escenarios fueron recorridos por el escritor norteamericano Ernest
Hemingway a bordo del yate El Pilar, en correrías de caza o pesca, pero
principalmente en su participación personal en la búsqueda de submarinos
alemanes durante la II Guerra Mundial, que le inspiraron la mundialmente
conocida novela Islas en el Golfo.
Cuenta con 21 km de
ancha franja de arena
fina, de tono blanco
dorado, que penetra en
muy suave declive en
transparentes aguas,
siempre serenas como
efecto del arrecife
coralino que las
protege. Se presenta
como un entorno de
gran seguridad para la
recreación en familia.
Las crestas coralinas,
situadas a solo 2 km de
la costa, guardan en sus
oquedades y vericuetos
una sorprendente
biodiversidad. Buques
hundidos y
otros espectáculos
subacuáticos se
concentran en el canal
de entrada a la
Bahía de Nuevitas,
donde se pueden
contemplar también
colonias de flamencos
rosados.

run by the American writer Ernest Hemingway on board of El Pilar Yacht, for
hunting or fishing, but mainly in his personal search for German submarines
during 2nd World War, which inspired the world-known novel Islands in the
stream.
It has 21 km of wide fine sand belt, with a whitish gold tone, that slanting
smoothly penetrates in transparent waters, always serene due to the effect of the
protective coral reefs. It is presented as a very safe site for family recreation.
Coral crests, located only 2 km away from the coast, keep in their hollows and
cavities a surprising biodiversity. Sunken ships and other submarine spectacles
are concentrated in the entrance channel of Nuevitas Bay, where you can also
see colonies of pink flamingos
