Rising star Kirani James, took

Second place went to
Rachmil Van Lamoen of the
Netherland
Antilles
in
20.90secs.“It was a bit tough
this week but I'm so glad I
pulled it off,” said James. “I
know that I could have done it
(double), because I did it at
World Youth and I won both of
them so why not give it a try
here.”
Jehue Gordon, who was a
fourth place finisher at last
year's World Championships
in Berlin, added the 110m
hurdles title, winning in
13.41secs, to his 400m hurdles crown. Both times, 49.79
(400m hurdles) and 13.41
(110m hurdles) were completed in championship record
times. Young Jehue admitted

“I felt a little pain in my hamstring but I tried not to study
it. I went out there and kept
focused and did what I had to
do,” said Gordon. He finished
ahead
of
Barbadian
Greggmar Swift, who led for
the first 50 metres, but faded
to second in 13.75.
Jamaican Under-17 200m
sprinter Odane Skeen was
also in great form as he raced
to an impressive 20.84 to
erase countryman Jazeel
Murphy's 20.97 set at last
year's Games in St Lucia.
Skeen also won the 100M.

Kirani James, la estrella
quien ganó los 400m en un

lugar fue para Rachmil Van
Lamoian de las Antillas
Holandesas con un tiempo de
20.90s. James dijo, “Esta
semana fue un poco difícil,
pero estoy muy contento de
haber logrado tanto. Sabía
que podría hacerlo (el doble),
porque gané ambos en el
campeonato mundial de la
juventud entonces, ¿Porque
no intentarlo aquí?”
Jehue Gordon, quien terminó
4o en el Campeonato
Mundial en Berlín el año
pasado, ha añadido el titulo
para el 110m salto de vallas

en el 400m salto de vallas.
Ambos tiempos, 49.79 (400m
salto de vallas) y 13.41
(110m salto de vallas), se
clasificaron como tiempos
récordes del campeonato. El
joven Jehue admitió que
tenía un poco de molestia
mientras que borré el récord

barbadense,
Ryan
Brathwaite, hace tres años.
“Sentí un poco de dolor en mi
tendón, pero traté de olvidarlo. Continuaba enfocándome
en lo que tenía que hacer,”

(sub-17),
Odane
Skeen, también estaba en
gran forma mientras corrió a

Dear Colle agues
Estima dos c olegas:
We are approaching the busy part of our athletic season and from performances at earlier
competitions I am sure we are going to witness

JAMAICA DOMINA LOS JUEGOS
CARIFTA OTRA VEZ
JAMAICA AGAIN DOMINATES CARIFTA
Jamaica extended their dominance of the CARIFTA
championship ending with 72
medals, which included 37
gold, 22 silver and 13
bronze. Trinidad & Tobago
followed with 40 medals, 12
gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze
the Bahamas finished in third
slot with 29 medals, six gold,
10 silver and 13 bronze.
Among some of Jamaica's
highlights were the girls'
Under-17 200m through
Shericka Jackson, who
clocked 23.64 to beat her
teammate
Saqukine
Cameron (23.80).
The sprint hurdles
also brought huge
success
for
Jamaica; Megan Simmonds
led a Jamaican one-two with
Shenel Francis (13.69) as
she clocked 13.64 seconds
to win the Under-17 girls
event while Samantha Elliott
sped to a new championship
record time of 13.42 in winning the corresponding
Under-20 race, ahead of
teammate Tonique Sobah
(13.55). In the Under-17
boys hurdles, Davian Dennis
just got the better of fellow
Jamaican Omar Graham
(13.29) to win in 13.28
seconds.
Jamaica's Kemoy Campbell creates history at
NACAC Cross Country Championships
Jamaica's Kemoy Campbell
created history at the NACAC
Cross Country Championships,
at the Mount Irvine Bay Golf
Course in Tobago.
The 19-year-old Jamaican
dominated the Junior Men's 6k
event to become the first
Caribbean athlete to win a race
at the Championships. Prior to
Campbell's victory, the United
States, Canada and Mexico
were the only NACAC countries
to produced individual champions. This very focused and confident teenager bucked that
trend, completing the course in
18 minutes flat. Canada's
Ahmed Mohammed was a distant second, battling to the line
in 18:21, with 3rd spot going to
American Erik Olson in 18:37.
Running in sweltering heat,
Campbell always
looked a winner. By the end of
4
the second lap, he had opened
up a huge gap on his rivals, and
was challenged only by the
clock on his third and last trek
round the undulating course.
Campbell said “I enjoyed
running in the race.
The conditions
were very
Jamaican-like.'
Jamaica extendió
su dominio en el
campeonato
CARIFTA por terminar con
72 medallas, que incluyó 37
de oro, 22 de plata y 13 de
bronce. Trinidad y Tobago le
siguió con 40 medallas, 12
de oro, 16 de plata y 12 de
bronce. Las Bahamas terminó en tercer lugar con 29
medallas, seis de oro, 10 de
plata y 13 de bronce.
Unos de los momentos
destacados para Jamaica
fueron la carrera a través de
200m para las chicas menor
de 17 años, en que Shericka
Williams corrió un tiempo de
23.64s para vencer a su
compañero
de
equipo
Saqukine
Camerino
(23.80s).
La carrera de vallas también
aportaron un éxito enorme
para
Jamaica.
Megan
Simmonds llevó a Shenel
Francis (13.69s) por correr
un tiempo de 13.64 y ganar
el evento para las niñas
menor de 17 años. En el
mismo evento, Samantha
Elliott aceleraba a un nuevo
tiempo récord de 13.42s
para ganar la carrera correspondiente para mujeres
menor de 20 años por adelante de su compañera
Tonique Sobah (13.55s). En
el salto de vallas para los
niños menor de 17 años,
Davian Dennis le ganó en
frente de Omar Graham
(13.29s) con un tiempo un
poquito mejor (13.28s).

JAMAICA AND FRANCE JOIN FORCES
JAMAICA Y FRANCIA UNEN SUS
FUERZAS
Taken from the JAAA website/Tomado de la página web de la JAAA
The
Jamaica
Amateur
Athletic
Association (JAAA) recently
inked an agreement in
Guadeloupe to enter into a partnership deal with the French
Federation of Athletics (FAA),
which will see the Jamaicans
sharing their expertise and
ideas with the regional French
territories, while at the same
time receiving assistance with
competition management from
their French colleagues. JAAA
president Howard Aris and his
French counterpart, Bernard
Amsalem, sealed the deal.
This deal will be beneficial to
both federations and will hopefully have a direct impact on the
development of track and field
in Franc's regional territories of
Martinique, Guadeloupe and
French Guyana in particular.
The agreement is a multifacetted one and will among
other areas feature several
bilateral seminars on techniques and a 4-day Caribbean
youth camp. Howard Aris
described the agreement as
astep in the right direction and
pointed out that it will also
help Jamaica realize its push
to develop other areas in the
sport of track and field outside
of sprinting.
Amsalem, through a statement from his association,
expressed confidence that the
partnership will reap rich dividends, and used Jamaica's
success on the global stage
as a mark of reference. "This
partnership
will
add
dynamism to the practice of
athletics in the Caribbean.
Jamaica's success serves as
the perfect example in many
sectors," said Amsalem.
The four-day camp is hoped
to serve as an important first
step towards preparations of
budding regional talent for the
2016 Olympic Games to be
held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Some of the Jamaica's top
sprint coaches and instructors
are expected to share their
wealth of knowledge at the
seminar, which will also
involve top coaches from the
European country.

acuerdo.
Este acuerdo será beneficioso
para ambas federaciones y
hay confianza que tendrá un
impacto directo sobre el desarrollo del atletismo en los territorios regionales de Francia;
Martinica,
Guadalupe
y
Guyana Francesa, en particular.
El acuerdo comprende múlti
ples facetas, y ofrecerá varios
seminarios bilaterales sobre
las técnicas y un campamento
para la juventud caribeño por 4
días. Howard Aris escribió el
dacuerdo como
un paso en la
dirección correcta y señaló que también
ayudará a Jamaica empujar el
desarrollo en otras áreas del
deporte de pista y campo.
Amsalem, a través de un
comunicado de su asociación,
expresó su confianza en que la
asociación va a cosechar
buenos dividendos, y utilizaba

Former Bahamian national track and
field representative Mrs Pauline DavisThompson finally received the 200m
Olympic gold medal she was denied at
the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Mrs
Davis-Thompson's belated moment of
triumph came about as a result of disgraced gold medal winner Marion
Jones, admitting that she had cheated
and had to return her illegally obtained
gold medal.
The presentation event held at the
Bahamas Government House, was
attended by among others, Thomas A.
SOME BAHAMIAN ATHLETIC
PERFORMANCES
With all the action at the Penn Relays in
Philadelphia, there were a few performances by Bahamian athletes elsewhere which
are worthy of note.
At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa,
Trevor Barry placed second in the Special
High Jump with a 2.21m(7'3”) jump.
Michael Mathieu was third in the 400m in
46.16 sec.
Tia Rolle placed 8th in the 100m in 12.18
sec and was a member of the Lincoln
University(MO) 4x100m Relay which did
not finish.
Across the pond in Dakar, Senegal,
Christine Amertil finished third in the 400m
in 52.74 sec and fourth in the 200m in
23.84 sec.

Robinson, Sir Arlington Butler, Minister
for Youth and Sports Minister Charles
Maynard, president of the Bahamas
Olympic Association (BOA) Wellington
Miller, president of the Bahamas Athletic
Federation Mike Sands and Cuban
Olympian and IOC Representative
Alberto Juantorena who made the actual medal presentation, was a very emotional one for Davis-Thompson.
Amid a mix of tears and smiles, DavisThompson thanked her family members,
and expressed her special thanks to
Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, for his
encouragement and the positive influence on her life and post Olympic
career. The Prime Minister she said told
her years ago that under his watch he
would never allow her to fail at whatever
career path she chose.
Davis Thompson also used the occasion
to express her love and respect for the
Bahamian people and announced that
this gold medal is “the people's gold
medal” and that she would present it to
the Prime Minister as her gift to the people of the Bahamas.
JACK HAYWARD, ANATOL RODGERS SUSPENDED
The Bahamas Association of Athletic
Associations (BAAA) recently conducted an investigation into the alleged
infraction of the Penn Relays competition rules by coaches from the Jack
Hayward and Anatol Rodgers high
schools, which competed at the 2010
Penn Relays in Pennsylvania
The Federation determined that the
'High School Eligibility and Competition
Rule' governing the participation of high
school teams was violated. That rule
states: "All high school competitors
must compete for their high school
teams and be cleared for competition
by the school principal. Relay teams
must consist of runners from the same
school." That rule was breached and
the infraction confirmed by the Director
of The Penn Relays in an official communication to BAAA President Mike
Sands.
Accordingly, disciplinary action was
taken against coaches Wayne Smith
and Emmitt Higgins representing Jack
Hayward and Rupert Gardiner from
Anatol Rodgers. The coaches and
schools are therefore suspended from
participating in BAAA competitions for
one year beginning from the date of the
infraction. Additionally, the coaches and
the schools are required to submit a letter of apology to the Federation. The
Penn Relays organization also suspended the coaches and schools from
participation for the same period of
time.

HARRIGAN LEAD RECORD BREAKERS IN OECS/BVI INVITATIONAL
BVI 4 x 100m NR 44.34
Performing at home for the first time since
2008, sprinter Tahesia Harrigan - led the
parade of six All Comers Records broken
at the 2010 OECS/BVI Invitational. She
did this with an 11.22 seconds 100 meters
victory and contributed a strong second
leg on the 4 x 100 meters relay with a
meet and national record 44.34 seconds.
It was the first time that Ashley Kelly,
Harrigan, Chantel Malone and Karene
King had come together for the relay and
they wiped out the 46.69 national mark
set in 2007 by a junior team that also
included Kelly and Malone.
St. Kitts Nevis (with two members of their
2009 Central American and Caribbean
Championships squad Tameka Williams
and Virgil Hodge who ran 43.53 in Cuba
last July) were joined by Marecia
Pemberton (11.29 this season) and
Tiandra Ponteen to finish in 44.72 seconds, producing the fastest times ever run
on BVI soil. The BVI's 44.34 time is .34 off
the IAAF World Championships qualifying
mark for next year's event in Seoul, South
Korea.

3RD UTECH INTERNATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD CLASSIC
President of UTECH Dr Errol Morrison (3rd left) welcomes spectators to the 3rd Annual Staging of the UTech International
Invitational Track and Field Meet held on Saturday, April 17, 2010. Participating in the welcome ceremony from left are Mr Howard
Aris, President, Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA), Hon. Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture,
Dr. the Hon. Alfred Sangster, former UTech President and patron of the Meet and Mr Ali McNab, Advisor to Minister Grange. At
right Minister Grange presents Dr. Sangster with the shield acknowledging him as the patron of the 3rd UTech International
Invitational Track and Field meet.
The University of Technology
(UTECH) Department of Sport successfully staged its third annual
international collegiate track and
field meet on Saturday, April 17,
2010 at the National Stadium.
Despite a heavy afternoon down
pour, it was an exciting evening
showcasing the prowess of UTech
student athletes, UTech-based
MVP Track & Field Club athletes
and athletes invited from local
clubs and international colleges
and universities from Cuba, USA,
Sweeden and the Netherlands.
Also invited to participate were top
athletes from local preparatory, primary and high schools and physically challenged athletes from
Mona Rehabilitation Centre who
participated in the 100 m wheel-
20
chair race.
Mr. Anthony Davis, Director of
Sport, UTech has noted that the
staging of well organized competitions at the university level is crucial to the development of sports in
Jamaica. “We have for years done
exceptionally well at the high
school level, both in terms of the
organization of well run competitions and nurturing talent. At the
end of the day when these gifted
high school athlete's graduate, we
must have a very vibrant university
system to provide the atmosphere
for them to develop to international
standard.”
He further pointed out that while we
have many talented high school
athletes, very few can represent
the country at that tender age in
senior international competitions.
“It is at the university level that their
bodies are better able to do the
kind of work necessary to allow
them to perform with distinction as
seniors at the international level.
We at UTech recognize this and so
the staging of international competition and inviting or local partners
to participate demonstrates our
efforts to lead the effort for the
development of sport at the university level.” Mr Davis was speaking
at the press conference launch of
the Classic.
