UNDERSTANDING THE REVISED
MASS TEXTS
BULLETIN INSERT # 3
At many of our Masses during the week, the
Introductory Rite or Beginning of Mass concludes with the priest saying: “Let us pray” and
then presenting the Collect Prayer or Opening
Prayer.
The Collect Prayer (or Opening Prayer)
“collects” all of our petitions and intentions for
the Mass and prepares us to sit and to actively
listen to the Word of God proclaimed in the
Scriptures. God is speaking to us --- a divine
message --- and so we should not be reading
the bulletin or even Catholic New York!
All of the Collect Prayers will be retranslated and --- following the Latin --- will
sound more formal and complex. However, the
hope is that these prayers will have a richer,
deeper, more profound meaning for us. As
usual, we will answer “Amen” at the end of the
prayer.
In Masses on Sundays and feast days, we
pray The Gloria before the Collect or Opening
Prayer. The Gloria is an ancient and joyful
prayer that praises God as Father, Son and
Holy Spirit. In the Bible, many of the psalms
are prayers that praise God and we also have
Mary’s prayer of praise --- the Magnificat in
Luke 1:46-55. So the Gloria is our prayer of
praise to the Trinity in the Mass.
The new translation of The Gloria will have
several changes and will require attention to the
new phrases. Again, the changes try to remain
more faithful to the ancient Latin texts of the
prayer. Remember, too, that issues of sexist
language are not part of the prayers of the Mass
--- the Mass is offered or presented to God the
Father through His Son Jesus Christ with the
intercession of the Holy Spirit. “Inclusive language” can actually change the theology of the
Mass and so it is better to pray as the translation teaches us.

God gives everything out of love
We invest greatly in our children, in our family,
and in our future. We want to give the best of
ourselves and no sacrifice seems big enough, and no
effort or task is too strenuous for us. As long as we
can attain the goal of achieving a better future,
nothing else matters.
In seeking a better
world many of us
endure
dangers,
anguishes,
and
problems. So when
things don’t turn out
well, we become
frustrated
and
disillusioned.
Depression can even
lead us to throw in
the towel, give up on doing anything else or seek
other paths. Sometimes our efforts are met with a
lack of gratitude, misunderstanding or indifference by
the same people they are supposed to benefit. Even if
we don’t do things so that people can appreciate
them, the lack of gratitude can hurt greatly.
However, being mistreated by those whom we have
treated well can be an even greater source of pain
than the lack of appreciation.
It is not difficult to imagine, therefore, the
immensity of God’s pain. He has invested immensely
into our vineyard. He loved it so much that he sent
his own son. It is easy to imagine God’s frustration in
seeing that not only has the vineyard failed to bear
fruit, it rejected his son. We can imagine the feelings
of disillusionment , sadness, and disbelief after
having devoted so much to him.
For reflection
In what ways have I wasted some of the gifts that God
has given me without bearing any fruit? Have there
been times when I have rejected the love of God in my
life?

CCD REGISTRATION … for children … for teens and for adults …

ADULTS ONLY … we have programs here in the parish for adults
who would like to receive the sacraments of initiation
(Baptism, Communion and Confirmation) on Sundays at 1:00
PM as well as a program for those who are civilly married and
want to be married in the church … please speak with Sister
Teresa or Sister Eleazar or one of the priests for more
information.
BAPTISMS … when someone inquires about Baptism they meet
with one of the priests and we explain the following: parents
must be registered and coming to church on Sundays;
godparents must be practicing Catholics with a letter of
recommendation from their parish and godparents must have
received the sacraments themselves (if married, married in
the Catholic Church) … then we go from there with paperwork,
dates and classes … in order to baptize, the priests must have
some assurance that the child will be given good example and
brought up in the Catholic church … as you can see, Baptism is
much more than a custom, a blessing, a reason for a family
party --- it is a serious commitment on the part of the parents,
the godparents and the Church --- it is life in Jesus Christ, our
Savior.

PARISH HOMECOMING … we will celebrate all that is St.

Sunday, October 2nd — 4:30 Mass followed by
Life Night in Convent (Metropolitan and Castle Hill)
6-8:30pm. After an amazing kick-off last week we
continue to welcome our new members with this
important life night on how to have faith and trust
in God. Our saint for tonight is Margaret of
Costello, who trusted God greatly even after being
abandoned by her parents because of her physical
disabilities.
What is a LIFE TEEN Core member? A man or
woman at least 21 years of age who is living out
their Catholic faith and desires to hand on this
precious gift to today's teenagers. A Core member
has patience to walk alongside teens as they
struggle will doubts and questions, helping them to
gradually reach mature faith. A Core member
doesn't have all the answers but is humble enough
to point to the One who does. Is God calling you to

St. Raymond's LifeLine (ages 18-29):
Sunday, October 9th-Monday, October 10th Girl's overnight retreat open to high school and
college age young women. Begins with 4:30 Mass.

Dios entrega todo por amor
Invertimos mucho en nuestros hijos, en nuestra familia, en
nuestro futuro. Queremos ofrecer lo mejor de nosotros y no
hay sacrificio demasiado grande, ni esfuerzo que no se pueda
emprender, ni trabajo demasiado fuerte para nosotros. Nada
importa, con tal de alcanzar la meta de buscar un mejor
futuro. Muchos de nosotros pasamos por los peligros, angustias
y problemas buscando un nuevo mundo. Por eso, cuando las
cosas no salen bien, nos
frustramos y desilusionamos.
Puede ser que la depresión
nos lleve a tirar la toalla y
no querer hacer ya nada
más, ni buscar otros
caminos. A veces, nuestros
esfuerzos se encuentran con
la falta de gratitud, la
incomprensión
o
la
indiferencia de aquellos
quien se supone que
beneficien. Aunque no hagamos las cosas porque se nos
agradezcan, la ingratitud duele muchísimo. Y, más todavía que
la ingratitud ha de doler el que aquellos a quienes hemos
hecho bien, nos devuelven mal.
No nos será difícil, entonces, imaginar la inmensidad del
dolor de Dios. Ha invertido todo una inmensa cantidad en
nuestra viña. La ha amado tanto, que ha enviado a su propio
hijo. Es fácil imaginar la frustración al ver no sólo que no da
fruto, sino que rechaza a ese hijo. Nos imaginamos la
desilusión, la pena, la incredulidad que puede haber sentido
después de haber empleado tanto de su propio ser. Porque no
son cosas materiales lo que da Dios, sino a sí mismo. Y,
aparentemente, para nada.
Lo bueno con Dios es que capaz de encontrar una razón para
