Attention 8th grade Parents
There are copies of two very important documents attached to the end of this newsletter.
One explains the expectations and requirements for students to attend all 8th grade
advancement activities. Your students should have brought this form home before spring
break. If you have not seen this form, please print, read and sign it. Return this form to school
as soon as possible.
The second form has information about location, times, and dress code for the advancement
dance, as well as, the brief classroom advancement program. There is also a permission slip
portion that, if signed, will allow you to take your 8th grade student home directly after their
advancement program. If this is not signed, your student will have to stay until the end of the
school day.
Sports Physicals
Here’s a heads up for next year. We have scheduled dates for students to obtain FREE sports
physicals. Both events will be held at Gililland, but are for all students. Saturday, August 6th,

from 8:00am – 12:00pm. Please put these dates on your calendar for future planning. Flyers
with information about these events will be available in late April or early May.

Connolly’s Student Council placed first in the
United Food Bank Donation Drive. We collected
hundreds of pounds of food. At the May
meeting, the UFB representative presented
Connolly with an amazing trophy.
Stop by the office and check out our trophy!!
Art On Display!
The advanced art students
worked in the style of
artist Mark Jenkins to
create these one of a kind
installations. Each group
collaborated to come up
with their own pose to
achieve the most shocking
effect for the viewers. The
students explored the line
between street art, installation and graffiti through a
presentation proposal to
administration for permission.
Ms. Pruitt’s Classes
Ms. Pruitt's English Language Learners are collecting cash for water donations to UNICEF. All
donations will go to help survivors of Ecuador’s recent earthquake. Please bring donations to
Ms. Pruitt in room 203 (near the busses) any time before May 19th.
Fun Day
Students & teachers competed against each other to win
and for the bragging rights in CMS's annual PE Fun Day.
Each grade level had their own day to compete and team
build during the varied field activities. Competitions/events
included tug of war, six people race with legs tied, root
beer chug-a-lug, puff the dragon, egg toss, circle jump,
water balloon toss, sack race, and water brigade. Students
and teachers enjoyed the great day of fun and competition
during the beautiful spring weather. Great job CMS!
Connolly’s Monarch Butterfly Garden
After studying the wonders of the Monarch migration and
the destruction of Monarch habitats, one Connolly student
was inspired to plant a Monarch Butterfly Garden here at
CMS. She enlisted the help of her Girl Scout troop,
formulated a plan, and raised
funds. The Girl Scouts spent
several Saturdays pulling
weeds, mowing grass, and
preparing the soil for
planting. They installed a new
water system, planted plants
that provide nutrients for
Monarchs, and even added
decorative tiles to the
garden. The 7th grade science
department will be using the Monarch Habitat to teach future
classes about the importance of caring for the environment.
Thank you Girl Scouts!
Officer Baggs
Parents and students, please, do not cross Broadway Road at Country Club Way when going to
and from school at Connolly. It is a very dangerous intersection for pedestrians and there have
been a few close calls with students and vehicles. The proper place to cross Broadway is at
River Drive, where there is a traffic light and crosswalks. The Broadway and River intersection
is just a little bit east of Country Club Way. So please, let’s all be SAFE!
Booster Club
With the end of the year approaching quickly, there are many activities planned for students
that require financial support from the Booster Club. Please help the Booster Club by donating
$1, $5, $10, $20…. anything that fits your budget. We accept cash or checks (made payable to
the Connolly Booster Club). All donations can be given to the office or your student’s
homeroom teacher. For more information, call the Booster Club president or send us an
email. [email protected] or Sarah Hartman @ 480-510-2734

students explored the
campus of ASU's Honor
Barrett College this
spring. Students were able to see
classrooms, tour dorm rooms, and have a
Q & A with current Barrett students. For
lunch,
students enjoyed an all-you-can-eat buffet
in the Harry Potter dining room. The tour
gave students some insight on
scholarships, classwork assignments,
housing, and activities. A good time was
had by all.
Spoiler Alert
Parenting classes next year in English and Spanish will start in August.

Dear Parents and 8th Grade Students,
The end of the 2015-2016 school year is fast approaching. End of the year activities for 8th graders are a privilege and
honor to attend. As a result, the administration and 8th grade faculty have established promotion, or “advancement”,
criteria for attendance, academics, and behavior.
In order to be eligible to attend the 8 th grade dance and the end of the year field trip, all 8 th grade students must
maintain at least a “D” average in every class (including P.E., Music, and Electives) by May 6, 2016.
In addition to the maintenance of at least a “D” average in every class, students are expected to continue to use good
judgment and follow established school and district rules. In order for education to be effective, good behavior is as
important as academic achievement and school attendance. Beginning March 14, 2016, and continuing until the final
day of school, any student who is truant, (ditching), will not be permitted to attend the end of the year field trip and
advancement dance. Any student who receives one or more out-of-school suspensions (OSS) or three or more in-school
interventions (ISI) of any length or is on ISI/OSS/library probation at the time of the dance and/or field trip will
automatically be ineligible for the end of the year field trip and/or advancement dance. Please take time to talk with
your child about following school rules, proper behavior in and out of the classroom, and the importance of doing their
best work in all classes.
Students are also responsible for the return of all textbooks and library books by requested dates. Books must be
returned and all missing book fees must be paid. Any other outstanding charges must be paid by requested dates (i.e.,
P.E fees). Students with outstanding debts will not be permitted to attend the field trip and/or dance.
You will be receiving additional information regarding the end of the year activities, but until such time, please keep
the following dates in mind:
8th grade AIMS Science Assessment will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. Make-ups on March 23, 2016.
AzMerit testing will be administered during the week of March 28-April 1, 2016. Please do not plan vacations or
appointments during this week.
Eighth grade Advancement Dance will be held on Friday afternoon, May 13th, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Eighth grade Classroom Advancement Activity will begin promptly at 9:00 AM on Thursday, May 19th, 2016.
We are looking forward to this important milestone in your child’s future. We appreciate your encouragement and
support. We welcome any questions that you may have.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Mullery, Principal
&
Connolly Middle School Eighth grade teachers
Please sign and return by March 4, 2016 to your Social Studies teacher.
I understand the 2015-2016 policy, as stated above, for the advancement activity, dance, and field trip.
