EXCURSION to valleseco
GRAN CANARIA
The municipality of Valleseco
in the north of the island is bordering Moya and Firgas. It is
rich in water and thus one of the
most fertile and most beautiful
landscapes in Gran Canaria. 80
percent of the area is a nature
reserve. Therefore, it is a popular tourist destination and especially the ravines Barranco de la
Virgen in the northwest and Laguna Madre for hikers and nature
lovers.
APPLES AND CIDER
Beside almonds there is a focus
on the plantation of apples since
1858. You may say it is the Apple
Country from Gran Canaria. In
October there is even a folk festCOFFEE PLANTATIONS:

ival in honor of the Virgen de Encarnación y de La Manzana a folk
festival, which was declared a
Tourist Interest since 2011. If you
visit Valleseco, then you must try
the typical regional cider Sidra.
BESCHAULICHE STADT
Time seems to stand still if
you pass by the little capital
of the municipality, also called
Valleseco. The church square is
the center of the village life of the
locals. Directly opposite, there is
located a Gofio Museum.
When you are there, then you
must also visit the Ethnographic
Museum, where you can test the
milling of the Gofio flour with the
old stone mills like the indigenous people used.
9
AUSFLUGSTIPP: valleseco
A tourist office is also located in
this modern processed museum.
And in addition you will find the
market area, where ecological
products are sold.
Opening hours: Friday from
16.00 bis 20.00 clock, Saturday
from 10.00 bis 20.00 clock and
Sunday von 9.00 bis 15.00 clock.
About two kilometers away from
Valleseco town lies the beautiful
oasis La Laguna, a real insider tip.
Is curious that a race course for
horses surrounding the central
pond inside this Zona Recreativa.
COFFEE PLANTATION IN VALLE DE AGAETE
There is also seating under shade
giving trees. There you may get
lost in your mind and enjoy the
wonderful melodies of the birds.
Even dogs are allowed here, a
notable exception to Gran Canaria.

WINE, ORANGE AND
COFFEE PLANTATIONS
The municipality Agaete in the
northwest of the island of our
goal. Most people know the
port of Agaete, from where ferries from Fred Olsen depart and
arrive. Others have visited the
remarkable Archaeological Park
resp. cemetery of the indigenous
people "Necropolis del Maipés".

But we recomment to visit the
"Valle de Agaete" as one of the
most beautiful and fertile valleys
of Gran Canaria. Abundance of
water allows the cultivation of,
for example, oranges, lemons,
wine, and not least of coffee.
Here are the alleged single coffee plantations in Europe. Some
"coffee fincas" welcome visitors
and explain them the specialty of
coffee from Agaete.

CANARIAN HOLIDAY
„DÍA DE CANARIAS“
Saturday, May 30th
The Día de Canarias on May 30th

increasing number of Customs, so
as to obtain the Canarian Heritage. This celebration is full of folk
music, traditions and Canarian
traditions.
Officials often sponsor a free meal

ROMERÍA - WHAT IS THIS?
There is hardly a saint to whom is
not dedicated a fiesta. It is mostly
the patron saint of the municipality. One of the two highlights
of this folk festivals is the procession with a statue or a holy
picture of the saint. Traditionally
food donations are given in the
church, which then come to the
most vulnerable benefit. Another
highlight of these Fiestas are the
so-called Romerías. These are
usually scheduled on Saturdays
in the evenings. The participants
wear typical canarian folkloric
clothing. Not infrequently one

sees small groups, which then
sing or play music together. It is a
wonderful possibility to meet the
domestic people and learn more
about them.

HEALTH
Consulting a Doctor
The medical services are at
European level. Nevertheless
the language barrier might lead
to problems from time to time in
the public services such as the
Centro de Salud. For their services we recommend to take an
interpreter with you.
You can use their servie free of
charge if there exists a treaty
between the social insurance
companies of both countries.
You must show your social insurance card at the reception desk.
Private doctors usually speak
english too, especially in the
tourist areas. You may use their
services any time. If it is a private
doctor who has an agreement
with your insurance company,
you do not have to pay or you
get a refund when you return
home. Ask for the invoice. We
recommend that you ask the
doctor before treatment what is
included in what you must pay.

WEATHER
The climate on the Canary Islands is usually lovely. But especially in winter it could vary in
Gran Canaria. For example it is
sunny in Mogán Playa but raining in Las Palmas.
Anyway, for trips we recommend taking along suitable
clothes and checking the
weather forecast.

CULTURE HINTS
NUDISM - TOPLESS?
In Spain nudism is not prohibited.
However, it is common to use the
designated areas. This is also
valid for Maspalomas. Please respect the cultural and religious
values of the guest nation and
its people. Please undress only
in those areas. Bathing clothes
should not be worn on streets,
in towns or in restaurants (only
at the beach or in the hotel pool
area). The same applies to topless.
TIPPING
The Canary Islands is low income compared to the northern
European countries. Tipping respresents an importang part of
the salary. Please tip generously
for good service.
PETS IN CARS
In Gran Canaria pets are permitted in cars adequately secured.
This means, that they must be in
a separate, safety area divided
with a net from the driving area
or with a car harness (seat belt for
dogs).
Thousands of pets in the Canary
Islands are abandones and therefore live in very bad conditions
without food and water. Tara
Animal Respect Association and
their volunteers rescue every day
dogs and cats as many other organizations. They try to rehome
these pets also in other countries
throughout Europe. All animals
possess chips, international animal passports and up-to-date
immunisations.

With every purchase ask for an
invoice signed and stamped by
the shop. In case of a complaint
you will need this purchasing invoice.
Should it come to a disagreement you have the right to address your complaint to the consumer protection department

Every shop must provide this
form upon demand even in

Every party addresses the complaint according to the personal
point of view. This form consists
of one original sheet and two
