Activity of the Week/Actividad de la Semana
Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:

God gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live in the way of Jesus by
faith. Have family members talk about their faith and how it grows. Talk about an instance in
particular when your faith was tested. Who encourages us during those times? How can we
encourage others when their faith is tested?
Together as a family make a sign that says Have Faith, and put it on the refrigerator. During
the coming week when a hardship occurs in the family, have the involved family members
look at the sign and recall how their faith will give them the courage to face the hardship.
For two days this week, make a list of all the violent acts reported on the TV news or in the
newspaper. Then as a family discuss these questions:
1. What are the causes of the violence?
2. Is anyone doing anything about it? What?
3. Is anyone trying to work for peace? How?
4. Is there anything we can do about it?
In the readings for Sunday, there is communication between God and the people involved in
the story. In all cases, there is a plea for God to help and to give strength. Have your family
reflect on one troubling situation about which they will pray to God for help. Use the prayer
as an additional meal prayer or as an evening prayer.

Hablen de alg n momento en particular en que su fe fue puesta a prueba. ¿Quién nos animó
en esos momentos? ¿Cómo podemos animar a otros cuando su fe es puesta a prueba?
Juntos en familia hagan un letrero que diga: Tengan fe, y pónganlo en la nevera. Durante la
próxima semana, cuando ocurra alguna dificultad en la familia, pidan a los miembros afectados de la familia que miren el letrero y recuerden cómo su fe les dará el valor para enfrentar
la dificultad.
Durante dos días de esta semana, hagan una lista de todos los actos de violencia reportados
en las noticias de televisión o en el periódico. Luego, comenten estas preguntas en familia:
1. ¿Cuáles son las causas de la violencia?
2. ¿Alguien está haciendo algo por la situación? ¿Qué?
3. ¿Alguien está tratando de trabajar por la paz? ¿Cómo?
4. ¿Podemos nosotros hacer algo por la causa?
En las lecturas del domingo, hay una comunicación entre Dios y la gente involucrada en la

While I was sitting and writing in a local family-owned coffee shop, a young woman came up to me and said I
looked familiar. She asked me where I went to church. I told her I am a member of St. Timothy Parish — in Miami,
15 miles away from the coffee shop where we were. I asked the young woman where she went to church. She said she
didn’t attend anymore. She was studying Buddhist teachings. She noticed that I had papers and a small Bible beside
my laptop. “What is your name?” she asked. I gave her my first name. I asked her name and the name of her friend
sitting at a laptop in the corner of the room. “Would you mind giving me the address of your church?” I wrote it
down, and she asked me to add my name, which I did. As I handed her the slip of paper, she asked what time we
gather on Sunday. I added that to the note. “Lord, increase my faith.” I have been in this coffee shop innumerable
times. Every now and then, I run into someone I know. It is a rare occasion when a stranger starts a conversation.
There is meaning in this kind of encounter. “Increase my faith.” “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you
would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” After I wrote my note,
I thought to myself that if I had a mustard seed of faith, I could say to this woman, “Join us on Sunday,” and she
would. As she left the coffee shop, she said, “Nice to meet you.” I responded, “Nice to meet you, too. Maybe I’ll see
you on Sunday.” She and her friend smiled. “Lord, increase my faith.” That mustard seed of faith moved me to make
the invitation. A mustard seed of grace had moved this woman to inquire of me about my church. Who knows where
this will go? For my part, I firmly believe that once she experiences the personal warmth and spirit of faith at our
parish, she will benefit from it … whether or not she hears a call to go further. The disciples asked Jesus for an
increase of faith in response to many serious challenges he had given them. After Jesus told them of the value of a
solid (though initially small) faith, he went further. Jesus illustrated for the disciples that their role was to serve the
reign of God that he was bringing forth. As he was the servant of God in inaugurating the reign of God here, so also
they were to be servants of the reign of God. The faith that he gives them is to build them up for their task. “Lord,
increase my faith.” In all the relationships of our lives, we are servants of the coming of the reign of God. Through
Jesus’ gift of faith, we come to see fully that each and every person is called to the reign of God. Through that gift of
faith, we are nourished in our relationship with Jesus Christ so that in our other relationships — with family, friends,
acquaintances and those we meet at the coffee house or on the bus or at the grocery store — we might invite them
into the reign of God. “Lord, increase our faith.”
Mientras estaba sentado y escribiendo en una cafetería de empresa familiar, una mujer joven se acercó a mí y
dijo que le parecía conocido. Me preguntó a qué iglesia iba. Le dije que era miembro de la Parroquia de St. Timothy
en Miami, a 15 millas de distancia de la cafetería. Yo le pregunté a qué iglesia iba. Me dijo que ya no asistía a ninguna.

reuníamos el domingo. Le añadí a la nota “Señor, aumenta mi fe”. Frecuento esa cafetería. De vez en cuando me
encuentro a personas que conozco. Raramente un desconocido empieza una conversación. Estos encuentros tienen
un significado. “Aumenta mi fe.” “si tuvieras fe como un granito de mostaza, le dijeras a la morera, arráncate de raíz y
plántate en el mar, y me obedecería”. Después de escribir la nota, me dije si tuviera fe como el granito de mostaza, le
hubiera dicho a la mujer, “reúnase con nosotros el domingo,” y ella iría. Mientras salía de la cafetería, me dijo,
“encantada de conocerle”. “Le respondí, “encantado también de conocerle. Debería haberle dicho, “La veo el
domingo”. Ella y su amiga sonrieron. “Señor aumenta mi fe”. Esa semilla de fe de mostaza me conmovió hacer una
invitación. La semilla de gracia conmovió a la mujer para preguntarme sobre mi iglesia. Quién sabe a dónde me lleva
esto. De mi parte, creo firmemente una vez que ella experimente la acogida personal y la fe espiritual de nuestra
parroquia, ella se va a beneficiar… sin importar si escucha la llamada o va más allá. Los discípulos le dijeron a Jesús
que les aumentara su fe como respuesta a los retos que se les había encomendado. Después que Jesús les había dado
valores sólidos (aunque al principio poco) de fe, él fue más allá. Jesús instruyó a los discípulos que su función era
servir al reino de Dios que él estaba construyendo. Así como siervos de Dios, inaugurando el reino en la tierra,
también ellos tenían que servir al reino de Dios. La fe que se les daba era para su tarea asignada. “Señor, aumenta mi
fe”. En todas nuestras relaciones somos siervos del reino de Dios. Por medio de la fe regalo de Jesús, vemos
totalmente que cada uno de nosotros estamos llamados al reino de Dios. Por medio del regalo de la fe, alimentamos
nuestra relación con Jesucristo así como con otras relaciones – con la familia, con los amigos, conocidos y con otros
que encontramos en la cafetería, el ómnibus, supermercado – podemos invitar a otros al reino de Dios. “Señor,
aumenta nuestra fe”.
