9/11 REMEMBERED
Fifteen years ago, the continuing TV coverage of the
imploding twin towers of the World Trade Center in New
York was unbearable for me, as were accounts of the
crashes and destruction in Washington and the hills of
Pennsylvania. The immense devastation of human life
was incomprehensible. Visiting the site in New York
some five years later reopened searing wounds, and
overwhelmed me with immense sadness. An incursion on
our soil, carefully planned and executed by foreign
elements, had shattered my cherished sense of security,
and provoked a frightening sense of God’s absence.
How could my Catholic faith tradition enable me to
endure this tragedy? I knew that neither vengeance nor
sweeping animosity was an option for me.
You have left us crushed . . . covered us with darkness.
We are bowed down to the ground (Psalm 44:20, 26).
O Lਏ਒਄ of hosts, restore us;
Let your face shine upon us (Psalm 80:4).
The Psalmist cries a lament, expressing the mourning
of the Israelite people, the chosen of God, who had
regarded themselves as untouchable and above reproach,
now hurled into misery. The lament expresses a nation’s
agony, dares to complain against their divine protector,
may even own some complicity in the misery, and finally
pleads with God for deliverance.
In the midst of lamenting, the faith of Israel endured,
as must ours. We are as vulnerable as they were to the
violence and hatred that seem to encircle us. Our demand
for a divine explanation goes unheeded. Yet we have
learned of the self-sacrificing heroism of many,
witnessing to the finest character of our nation and of our
Christian heritage. Dying for one’s friends is a sacred
theme in our story, epitomized in Jesus, our Savior, and
extended through centuries in the grandest and noblest
acts of men and women in all circumstances.
In 2001 we came together as one nation under God,
sharing the grief, the disillusionment, and the promise to
rebuild. As today we lament our honored dead and
wounded, shall we translate such agonizing emotion into a
persistent pursuit of worldwide reconciliation and peace?
—Rev.
¿Cómo podría mi fe católica ayudarme a sobrellevar

We must unite ourselves through prayer and
solidarity with their dire plight. Catholic Charities
USA is already at work in the areas affected by the
flood. The funds collected in this one-time special
appeal for the 2016 Louisiana Floods will be used to
support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA, the
official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic
Church, as they and their member agencies respond
to immediate emergency needs for such necessities
as shelter, clean water, food, and medical care as
well as to the long term need to rebuild and recover
after widespread destruction.
Mary, Our Lady of Prompt Succor (honored as
the Patroness the Louisiana), pray for all those
devastated by this natural disaster and make fruitful
our efforts to assist them.

of a series of issues, we have had to lock the bin by

Bank Services) at 9820 Dino Drive, Suite #140, in
Elk Grove, Monday - Friday from 10am – 2pm.
Also, we are unable to take any other items. We
have no way to remove these from our church

car seats and mattresses must be taken to the dump,
that charges a fee. Thank you for your understanding.

St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery
Burial in a Catholic Cemetery is an Affirmation
and reflection of our Catholic Faith. The St. Vincent
de Paul Cemetery in Rancho Murieta is a part of the
Catholic Funeral and Cemeteries organization
A few years back some individual parishioners
would do the volunteer work with the Cemeteries
organization supplying the mowers and tools to
maintain the facilities.
The History of the Cemetery goes back to the
1860’s. The main part of the original church was on
what is now the 15th Green.
In 1999 a group of volunteers was formed and I
was selected as the chairman. I was given this task
by Msgr. O’Connor, and we all know if he wanted a
project done it got done. Many changes have been
made to list a few of them: A roadway was built in
the interior, a storage container for tools and
mowers was installed, signage and a cross was
installed, a columbarium, trees were trimmed, the
gate updated and a gate to the country club side
installed. Lastly the meditation area was built and
installed by the Prouty Family.
I would like to personally thank all the
volunteers. We had forty to fifty volunteers doing
these wonderful works. I especially would like to
recognize Mike Himmelmann for his efforts,
working for several years alone mowing and
maintaining the property. Thanks as well to Jerry
Hathaway, Ed Dennison Tom “Digger” Carline,
Paul Sampson, Hank Johnson, Rick Randall and
Kent Enzensperger, all who worked this effort
regularly for over 14 years. God Bless each of you
and all our other volunteers.
