1. When did people become more aware of the terrible sin and evil of the sexual abuse of children?
Isolated incidents were reported for as long as we have
been keeping records, but two historic events, one in
Louisiana and the other here in Manhattan Beach,
focused attention on this being a more widespread
problem beginning in the 1980s: The first was the
indictment of Father Gilbert Gauthe, a priest of the
Diocese of Lafayette, who turned out to be a serial pedophile; the publicity surrounding this case beginning
in 1984 raised everyone’s awareness that even clergy
could be a danger to children and youth. The second
was the case beginning in 1983 here in southern California involving many staff at the Virginia McMartin
Preschool. After three years of testimony, no one was
found guilty of sexual abuse in those cases. But the notoriety in the media over those years heightened everyone’s awareness to this problem in society, and led to
California enacting new laws for the mandated reporting of suspected child abuse.

that a small percentage of adults, particularly males, are
prone to this type of immoral behavior. Unfortunately,
this category has included a small percentage of clergy.

SUMMER CATECHISM CLASSES
Registrations for the summer catechism classes for
those young people who haven’t receive their First
Holy Communion will start on June 2nd at the parish office. This program is for young people 13-17
years of age who were baptized but haven’t receive
their First Communion. Registration is limited to 50
students. The classes will begin on June 30th and
continue Monday-Thursday from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
through the end of July. At the end of the course
those who have participated will receive their First
Communion. To register you must bring baptism
certificate and $100.00 registration fee. Classes
will be in English only.

MINISTERIOS CON LOS PRESOS
Cada primer Domingo del mes un sacerdote de la
parroquia celebra la Eucaristía en el Reclusorio de
Menores de Sylmar. Muchos láicos también
participan en la Misa y luego dan clases de
instrucción religiosa a los jóvenes. Si desea participar
de este importante ministerio, llame a José Castañeda

Los Talleres serán impartidos por la
psicóloga clínica guatemalteca Licenciada Lourdes
Saravia, en el salón # 13 de esta parroquia,
durante el primer, tercer y cuarto jueves de

BAUTISMOS EN EL SANTO ROSARIO
CATECISMO DE VERANO
Las inscripciones para el catecismo de verano
para los jóvenes adolescentes que no han hecho
la Primera Comunión comenzarán el 2 de junio
en la oficina parroquial. Este programa es para
los adolescentes de 13-17 años de edad que
fueron bautizados pero no han hecho la Primera
Comunión. Hay cupo limitado de 50 alumnos
solamente. Las clases iniciaran el 30 de junio y
continúan de lunes a jueves de 6:00 a 8:00 p.m.
durante todo el mes. Al final del curso los participantes harán su Primera Comunión. Es un requisito que presenten el Acta de Bautismo y la
cuota de inscripción de $100-(incluye texto y
Biblia). Las clases serán en Inglés solamente.
Los padres de los niños deben pasar a la Oficina Parroquial por lo
menos un mes antes de la fecha del bautismo para apuntar a su hijo/a
para bautizar. Los padrinos deben ser mayores de edad y tener el Sacramento de la Confirmación, si son pareja deben estar casados por la
Iglesia Católica Romana y traer comprobante. Los niños para ser
bautizados en el proceso regular, tiene que ser antes de que cumplan
los seis años de edad ya pasada esta edad serán enviados al proceso de
RICA. Traigan acta de nacimiento del niño/a. Se les pide una
cooperación de $ 30.00.
