Billy Kosco One day, I was standing outside a public high school. I remember looking down at all the oil spots that dotted the concrete entryway and sidewalks. "They must allow the auto shop to park cars here for oil changes," I thought to myself. Later that day while at a supermarket, I noticed the same little black dots and wondered, "Who in the world would park his car on this sidewalk?" It was later that week when I saw our custodian at St. Henry on her knees scraping the concrete patio with a razor knife that I realized what all those ugly black bird droppings really were! BUBBLE GUM ! Yes, chewing gum is made with oil. When it magically leaps out of one's mouth and onto concrete or asphalt, the oil stains the surface and sends the message: "No one cares about this place. Someone else will pick up after me. The government or the rich owner will fix it." The only way to prevent your parish from looking this way or from finding gum under your chair, is to ban gum chewing throughout the parish property. So please, throw your chewing gum away before you exit your vehicles. And if a person thinks that chewing gum is appropriate during Mass, I invite him to consider staying home and watching Mass on television. Fr. Billy Memorial at Holy Cross Cemetery A National Memorial for Aborted Children killed by abortion, will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery located at 99th Avenue and Thomas Road, on Saturday, September 14th at 10:00 a.m. Services will be held at the Rachel's Vineyard monument, next to the Holy Innocents burial site. What is an Altar”? The altar is the central furnishing of the Catholic Mass. An altar is a place of sacrifice and the term "altar" can be found throughout the Old Testament when referring to the place of Jewish sacrifice. In Christian theology, you will sometimes hear Calvary or even the cross as being an "altar" because it was there that Christ was sacrificed for our sins. Sometimes you will hear the altar referred to as a table in some of our prayers, for example: "gathering around the Lord's table," or "the bread from this heavenly table," but this is just a poetic way of speaking about the altar from which we receive the Eucharistic food. So although it is in one sense a table, it's purpose is to prepare and receive the Lord's sacrifice in the form of the Eucharist. An altar may be freestanding so that the priest faces the people, or it can be ad orientum (literally: "facing east") so that the priest stands before the congregation directing the prayers in the same direction as the people are facing. At least two lit candles are placed on or near an altar to draw our attention and to signify the act of sacrifice taking place.
