The ORLOP events so far have been very successful, with an average attendance of 40, and I believe will be a viable
addition to our calendar in the long term (provided daylight saving becomes permanent after 2009).
In Melbourne, there are events throughout the summer on four evenings a week, and I hope to check one of them out
on a visit to Bleak City in late January.

2007/08 Be Active Metro Series
The Be Active Metro Series Orienteering is approaching crunch time, with 5 events left to go, including two new
maps at Hillarys and Canning Vale
After the Trigg event, Brian W. Hewitt is leading the Long Course, Lee Holliday the Medium, and Aoife & Eoin
Rothery have an unbeatable lead in the Short.
Ricky Thackray is poised to defend his Open Men’s title on the Long Course, after missing the first event. He hasn’t
had things all his own way however, with experienced orienteers Rob Jessop and Wayne Eliot taking out the last two
races, and Sten Claessens consistently earning high points. Kim Hazeldine is the clear leader in the Open Women. In
the Veteran Men class, Tony Whittaker may have established a winning lead, but Andrew Martin, Ian Thomsett, and
Gary Carroll could make a late run for overall victory.
Pete Shanley is leaving his Medium Course Open Men’s title defence late this year, and can’t afford to miss another
event, which would leave Lee Holliday as the winner. Cath Chalmers is currently the leading Open Woman, but a very
fit Jen Graham-Taylor may overtake her. While Ken Brownlie is currently the leading Veteran Man, the eventual winner should be either Richard Matthews or Chip Lundstrom. Carol Brownlie will retain her title in the Veteran Women.
Prepaid Event Cards:
It’s not too late to purchase a prepaid event card and make some savings. Remember these can be used at the Short
Series, coming up this autumn, and at next summer’s Metro Series. You can also share a card with a partner or friend.
You can order Cards by emailing me, or buying them from me at events. The cards sell for $90 (adult), $45 (junior),
and $135 (group).
Runner’s World/Brooks Shoes Draw:
Don’t forget to attend the Kings Park event on 23rd February, where the overall Series prizes will be awarded, and the
draw prize will be a pair of Brooks running shoes from Runner’s World!

declining, when planning for 2008’s winter events started
last July 07, Tech’ Rep’s felt their clubs could manage
similar workloads in the following year. This was later
supported by the figures used to distribute events between
the clubs, which are based on the number of WA adults
involved in the previous Long State Championships. For
2007 these were similar to 2005, after an interim rise from

2007 Promotions Report – Richard Matthews
The major activities for the year were the continuation of
event notices in the West Australian in Saturday’s BGC
Sports Diary column. A couple of events were missed
when the editor of the column for some reason decided
not to publish the Orienteering section, otherwise this is a
valuable service and one that I think does a good job of
informing people with an interest in Orienteering of the
location of events.
Several press releases were prepared and distributed during the year by myself, Helen Post and Tony Simpkins
with a range of success in making the newspapers. As in
previous years the West Australian shows little interest in
“minor” sports but the local community newspapers are
much more interested and willing to publish stories about
local people or events. A good article was published about
Rhys Challen and his selection in the team for JWOC.
2007 Mapping Convenor Report—Paul
Dowling
A relatively quiet year on the mapping front after the hectic period leading up to the 2006 Carnival. I’ve taken over
most of the Convenor’s duties from Peter Komyshan,
leaving him free to do some mapping and not have to answer questions about OCAD.
At the start of the year I put together a visual index of our
existing maps -bush and metro - both to give me an idea
of what we’ve already mapped, and to see what areas with
good terrain might still be available. This representation,
unsurprisingly, shows the vast majority of our bush maps
in a narrow band running North-South to the East of Perth
– the Darling Range obviously providing most of our
good terrain. The metro maps are more evenly spread
across the city, albeit with a slight concentration around
Trigg/Gwelup.
I’ve also started up what I’ve long thought we needed – a
revision control system for our stock of digital (OCAD)
maps. This allows me to update maps as required, without
a) losing any previous changes when saving the new version, and b)being able to retrieve old versions on demand.
With the move to digital maps, there is a tendency for old
versions of a map to float around in peoples’ inboxes and
hard drives and resurface at inconvenient times. This is
particularly evident for the Metro Series maps, where
someone who set an event in 2004 might reuse the same
map in 2007, without realising that someone else ran an
event in 2006 and made a lot of corrections to the OCAD
file. The first person then fieldworks the corrections again
- duplicating the efforts of the second – which results in
wasted time and frustrates both parties. I made a push to
get the Nomads to give up their hoarded copies of old
Metro maps – there were 4 versions of some maps floating around!
2007 saw the fieldwork for one new bush map finished, in
the form of Bells Rapids. Stretching from the South edge
A number of paid advertisements have been placed in
targeted local newspapers to promote the Metro Series
with free entry for people holding an advert, these have
had some success and are part of the strategy that the
council adopted to increase the fees for the events so we
had the funds to have a more active promotional and advertising campaign. This promotion has been managed by
Tony Simpkins and Jennifer Binns.
If anyone has any ideas on how we can effectively promote orienteering please let me know.
of Walyunga NP to Bells Rapid itself, this map combines
the rock detail of Walyunga with a vegetation density
closer to Gunapin Ridge and has been an ongoing project
of Peter Komyshan’s over the last few years. While there
is significant vertical relief on the map - 200m from the
summit to the footbridge at Bells, as compared with 375m
from the assembly area to the top of Mt Dale – the
runability is very high. After field-checking is complete
during 2008 it should provide an excellent venue close to
the city.
Our collection of Street maps is also steadily expanding,
while Tony Simpkins’ introduction of the mid-week ORLOP events is showing how we can use even smaller
pockets of suburbia to run interesting and successful
events.
The search is also underway for our next crop of maps.
Peter, Noel Schoknecht and I have each identified an area
worth mapping, ranging from an area west of Brookton
(near Umuna/Hill Park Dale), through Metro Rd to the
banks of the Avon River – it’s hard to paddle down the
Avon without wanting to map most of the South bank!
Finally, the list of maps that need some reworking is
growing steadily. Whiteman Park has suffered from Enthusiastic Construction syndrome and needs an update to
reflect the many man-made features that have appeared in
recent years. Some bush maps, such as Avon Valley NP
and the Wootra Brook/Catholic Ag College maps, need an
update. Andrew Slattery was in WA at the beginning of
2007 doing updates on South Ledge, Kalamunda NP and
Mt Observation, with more work done on the latter by
Peter Watson. If anyone is interested in field-checking
existing maps, I have something for everyone.
“If we can’t map it, it’s probably the ocean”
2007 Treasurer’s Report—Chas Lane
You may note that the Depreciation allowance this year is
quite high: Council has elected to clean up the balance
sheet by writing off all the lingering value attributed to
most of the club’s equipment, with the exception of the OShop inventory and the Tent-a-Van, which has significant
residual value and is to be sold when the new caravan is
commissioned. The practice of valuing the stock of
printed maps is dispensed with, as they have no marketOn the financial front the club is in good fiscal health with able value. (They do have intrinsic value in that they save

year is beyond me, and I’ll leave that analysis to others.
2007 was a successful year for the OAWA, both in the
financial performance and in the way the accounts are
managed. After a considerable battle with bankers we
have been able to move to internet banking and this has
reduced the workload on the Treasurer considerably, as
anyone who pays their bills online will concur.
This cash reserve will fund the equipment and mapping
budgets over the next few years as we prepare for future
State and National Carnivals.

were conducted, and 177 teachers were involved.
The Healthway sponsorship supported the funding of the
Development Officer position, and the associated administrative costs.
Of the schools involved, 50 were primary schools, 20
were secondary, 41 were government schools, and 29
non-government.
The sponsorships allow OAWA to generate income from
services to schools and other organisations, providing
employment for a number of Orienteering Western Australia members as Casual Development Assistants. Details
of income and expenditure under the Be Active Development Program are provided in the Association’s Annual
Accounts.
Most schools were in the metropolitan area, but three
were in Mandurah, and two were from the Wheatbelt. In
39 of the schools, students participated in a series of three
or more sessions, with the remainder participating in one
or two sessions.
75 sessions took place after school hours, through the Active After School Communities Program.

these people will try orienteering again.
Schools Development Program
Young people, especially school students, are an important target group for Healthway, and the sponsorship allows Orienteering Western Australia to run a comprehensive Schools Development Program. The primary role of
the Be Active Development Officer is to introduce and
develop the sport of orienteering into Western Australian
schools. This is achieved in a number of ways, including:
It would not be possible to provide a service to all the
schools requesting orienteering sessions without the help
of Development Assistants. I would like to record my
deep appreciation for the work of Helen Post, Penny
Dufty, Mike Howe, and Carol Brownlie, in running sessions for schools during the year.
Making orienteering maps of schools, and developing and Mapping
running orienteering programs and sessions for schools,
23 schools were field-worked and drawn on OCAD, and
either at the school, or at a park, bush or camp map;
26 existing school maps were updated. Several other park
and recreation camp maps used in the school sessions
were updated, some more than once.
Teacher Development
I worked with 22 teachers on a one-to-one basis, and a
further 153 teachers or teaching undergraduates were involved in various other activities, such as teambuilding,
orienteering courses, and information seminars. During
the year, two Level 0 Instructors courses were offered, but
did not go ahead due to insufficient numbers. Overall, a
total of 426 teachers from 134 schools participated in the
various Schools Development Program activities during
the year.
Inter-School Competitions
In addition to the Be Active WA School Orienteering
Championships, two Be Active Primary Interschool Orienteering Carnivals were held during 2007. A record
1,274 students from 37 schools participated in these three
events. Many thanks to all the helpers at these events,
especially Ian Dalton for his contribution to the School
Championships.
School Memberships / Income
Three schools took out group membership of Orienteering
Western Australia during 2007. School activities generate
considerable income for OAWA, and during the year
$25,050 (net of GST) was received from schools in payment for map-drawing and map sales, orienteering sessions, school competitions, and memberships. This income basically covers the program expenses such as stationery, printing and photocopying, administration and
communications, and travel, but only covers part of the
salary and wages of the Development Officer and Assistants. Without the Healthway sponsorship, these activities
would depend on volunteers and would have to be dramatically reduced.
Orienteering Events
Three new maps were field-worked and drawn for the
Metro Series this year, and the other maps were updated
by the Western Nomads, who also did the course setting
and event organisation. One new map was drawn for the
Short Series – thanks to Peter Komyshan for doing additional fieldwork and converting a black and white map to
sprint colour symbols.
Thanks to the co-sponsors of the Metro Series, Brooks,
and Runners World, and to the schools, local government,
and other organisations who provide their facilities either
free or for very reasonable cost, and without whose permission and cooperation we would not be able to hold
these events.
Winter Program
The Healthway sponsorship also encompasses our winter
program, and especially Fitter Families events. The Fitter
Families events are nearly always successful in attracting
newcomers, and over 175 non-members attended the five
events last winter. Thanks to the Club Instructors who
were rostered for these events.
Total participation in the winter program of 24 events was
2,612, or 109 per event. This compares well with 2006,
where the average including the Australian Champs carnival events was 110.
Mountain Bike Orienteering (MTBO)
Attendances at the MTBO season of six events in 2007
increased to 291 participants, an average of 48 per event.
The fourth State MTBO Championships on a great new
map, however, had a slightly disappointing entry of 43.
Total Participation in Orienteering
The number of non-members participating in all activities
for the year was 10,819 people, including 9,128 students
through the Schools Development Program. The total participation, including members, in all orienteering sessions
and events for the year was 17,051.
Be Active Metro Series Orienteering
The Be Active Metro Series is an important element of the
Healthway sponsorship, and helps to provide year-round
orienteering for members. The Metro Series events are run
by the Western Nomads, with administrative support from
the BADO, and income from the events is used to assist
Nomads teams to attend National Orienteering League
events around Australia.
Orienteering Western Australia Policies
May I take this opportunity to remind members of Orienteering Western Australia’s Policies on smoking, healthy
eating, alcohol, sun protection, use of drugs in sport, and
safe sport. These policies have been endorsed by Council,
and are on our web site. The policies are a requirement of
our sponsorship agreement with Healthway.
The calendar year 2007 includes the second half of the
2006/07 Summer Series season, and the first half of the
2007/08 season. Participation was down by 13% this year
to an average of 101 per event. On the other hand, there
was an increase in attendances at the Metropolitan Short
Series events of 11% to an average of 61 per event, and
there have been some encouraging attendances at midweek events during the current summer (average of 40).
OAWA Council
Finally, I would like to thank all Orienteering Western
Australia Council members for their support during the
year, especially Richard Matthews, Ian Dalton, and Paul
Dowling, and the Executive – Carol Brownlie, Theresa
Howe, Nick Lethbridge, and Chas Lane. Thanks also to
the Publications Convenor Jennifer Binns, and Split
Times Editor, Carol Brownlie.

LOST News – February 2008
LOST SOCIAL
As we swelter through summer, the bush season may
seem a distant memory. Please make the most of the
Metro series and Tony Simpkins’s mid-week line events
while the evenings are clear and warm. These events are
easy to slip into your summer social schedule, as those
who enjoyed the New Year’s Eve event and then went on
to toast 2008 with Champers can attest.
Christmas has come and gone (very pleasant under the
Pines at Cottesloe ) and now onto the business of summer
socials! Please note that the AGM (a short affair) will be
held at 6pm at the Valentine day picnic and then we will
get onto the series business of eating and drinking.
The social event in February on St Valentines Day is not
just a social event; it is also an important event for the
functioning of the club. It will be the time when we
allocate the main club tasks for the year, particularly for
the bush season. Please come along. Many hands make
light work and nothing is too onerous if we all do a little.
We are also changing over to a new LOST Convenor this
year. It’s about time! We have one contender. Please
come along and either nominate yourself to make it a
well-fought election…or enthusiastically endorse the
nominated contender. I am not telling you who it is so
that you need to attend to find out!

B O NEWS
Just a bit of gossip - a little birdie tells me that 2008 will
bring a new addition to the BO Club and that it will be a
GIRL !!!
Sunday 20th January was the Off Road Triathlon at Lake
Leschenaultia. For the first time a short course was offered and some of the Orienteers took advantage of the
shorter swim leg. As a result, Craig Dufty came first in the
Open Men for the Short Course and Rob West was third
in the Mens Masters Short Course.
Jack and Sue have been off adventuring again and have
kindly forwarded this fabulous story.
"For their latest holiday Jack and Sue Dowling decided to
let someone else do the navigating. We left the house and
dogs in the care of a house sitter, redirected all the mail
including the bills to Paul, and boarded a flight to South
America. First of all we spent a couple of days in Buenos
Aires and concluded that this city makes Sydney look
tame. We did a walking tour of the central city area, visiting numerous parks, monuments and the Falklands War
Memorial. Next we flew off to Iguazu Falls on the border
of Argentina and Brazil. These Falls are of a similar scale
to Niagara and Victoria Falls, and as there’d been a lot of
rain recently, they were flowing well and widely. Our
Water Corporation would have been green with envy at
the sight of all that water just running down stream.
Next stop was Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina.
Here we boarded the Akademik Sergey Vavilov and set
off for the Falkland Islands. Here we had our first introduction to penguins and had a taste of Falklands hospitality and culture. While in Stanley, the capital, we visited
the Falklands War Memorial– so we saw the war from
both sides. The war may be long gone but it’s certainly
not forgotten by both sides.
The islands of South Georgia were the next destination.
Here we saw, heard and smelt thousands and thousands
(literally) of penguins and the odd seal or two. We also
visited Grytviken, the site of a former whaling station.
Ernest Shackleton, the polar explorer, is buried here.
There’s also a great museum with a very good gift shop so
we could indulge in some retail therapy.
Visiting the South Orkney Islands wasn’t feasible because
of the weather conditions, so the ship travelled on to the
South Shetland Islands – more penguins, more seals, lots
of snow and ice, and some kayaking for Jack. Finally we
set foot on the Antarctic mainland. Then it was back
across the Drake Passage (not good for those prone to sea
sickness!) and to Ushuaia.
We arrived back in Australia with severe doses of jetlag,
far too many photos, and lots of great memories. You can
see some of our photos on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/
photos/15702309@N02/tags/antarctica/ and http://
www.flickr.com/photos/15702309@N02/tags/argentina/.
Be warned – if you come and see us we’ll bore you with
the DVD of our Antarctic trip!"
Thanks Jack and Sue

SWOT NEWS
know our new Convenor - Peter O'
Loughlin a little better.
The annual Australia Day fun run is again being coordinated by the Whitfield’s. Many SWOT members are
either volunteering to assist on the day or actually competing.
A hearty welcome to 2008 from all at SWOT. Many
thanks to Cheryl for the fabulous job she has done with
the newsletter. Hopefully I can keep the torch burning!
SWOT is set to launch into its new summer program on
Sunday the 3rd of February with an event at Bunbury’s
Big Swamp. (Details available from the SWOT website). Though SWOT have been on a break over the last
few months, we have not been idle.
The Busselton Ironman was held on Sunday December
2nd. Many SWOT members volunteered for the Marine
Terrace Aid Station on the bike leg. It was an early start,
with some members attending the start of the swim legs,
around 6am. Under the efficient leadership of the team
captain Michelle Whitfield (see picture), the day ran
smoothly with no major incidences. The aid station was
in full use until around 3pm, when the last riders were
coming through, then it was downsized to a couple of
tables until the last rider ventured through at about
4.15pm.
A social gathering and get together was held at the
Whitfield’s on Dec 23rd to lighten the load of left over
sausages in Peters’ freezer and to have a look at the draft
program and check out the new "O" trailer, which has
been given on long term loan to SWOT by OAWA. It
was also was an opportunity for many of us to get to
Some of our juniors and former juniors have also been
busy with some major achievements. Jeremy Cheang
was Dux at Australind Senior High School. He was
awarded a $1,000.00 cash prize from the State Government. His subject awards included Applicable Maths,
Calculus, Physics and Chemistry and a Music
Award. He also managed a performance at the Rising
Stars Showcase at the WA Academy of Performing
Arts.
Kendal Sutherland has completed and passed her first
year at Curtin University in Occupational Therapy, and
Kellie Whitfield has completed and passed her 3rd year
at Curtin University in Physiotherapy.
Some of SWOT’s junior juniors have also been busy in
the pool, with Liam Phillips (almost 3 yo) graduating to
“Super Ducks” and Ashleigh Oliver (just 2yo) also moving up to her next grade. Both of these youngsters are
expecting the arrival of siblings in the first half of this
year.
See you in the next edition,
Robyn Phillips
Christmas Event – SudukO
You have Brian Austin to thank if you came along to Shenton Park for the Christmas event last year. On the previous
weekend he pointed out that no one had put up their hand to a run the traditional Christmas odd ball Orienteering
event. Nicole and I were happy to step in and with the help of Cath we quickly had a map of Shenton Park. I took a
quick ride around looking for likely spots where a control site could translate to a number and we had a SudukO.
Cath was the first back with all the numbers but the 7km run slowed the brain and it took her a while to solve the puzzle, Brian and Bryan got the numbers but lacked any ideas on how to solve the puzzle and had to wait for Jane.
Kirsten was next but Paul had to run to get the last numbers and despite his former life as a professional Sudoku solver
was too late to challenge Cath. The booby prize went to Ken who somehow ended up with a Zero in one of the cells,
clearly not a Sudoku addict!
Here is the grid if you want a go, answers in the next Split Times.
