Dear Parishioners,
The Peace of the Lord Be With You!
In life there is a time for feasting, and there is a time
for fasting. Lent is the time for fasting. During
Lent we spend 40 days preparing for Easter.
The number 40 is very significant. The Israelites wandered in the
desert for 40 years. Jesus prayed and fasted for 40 days in the
wilderness. Jesus also spent 40 days on earth after His
Resurrection.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Holy Saturday.
Our sacrifices during Lent help us to appreciate the Supreme
Sacrifice that Jesus made for us.
Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the spiritual practices which
we emphasize during Lent. The best sacrifices are those that help
other people.
If we give up candy, desserts, or alcohol for Lent, put the money
we would have spent on them in the poor box or Rice Bowl
project. Rice Bowl is sponsored by the Catholic Relief Services.
Also, please set aside time for prayer during Lent. Give Jesus
some of our time.
In Christ,
February 24, 2013

PENITENTIAL FAST and ABSTINENCE:
LENTEN GUIDELINES: People ask for clarifications about
individual obligations for Lenten Spiritual Practices, especially
about fasting. Below are some traditional guidelines to help you
enter more deeply into the spirit of Lent.
All persons who have reached their 14th birthday are bound by
the law of abstinence. All adults are bound by the law of fast up
to their 60th year. The current canonical discipline of penance for
the United States, in addition to the general character of the
Lenten season, may thus be summed up as follows:
a) Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from
meat and also days of fast; that is limited to a single full meal.
The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.
c) The Fridays of the year outside Lent remain days of penance
but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence
from meat by some other practice of voluntary self-denial or
personal penance; this may be physical mortification or
temperance or acts of religion , charity or Christian witness.

ST. JOHN CATHOLIC CHURCH
WESTMINSTER, MARYLAND
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
February 24, 2013
SEMANA SANTA
